I cancelled the World of Warcraft raid due to lack of interest, so I headed over to the competitive store in San Francisco. It was still pretty crowded even for a weekday.
P1P1: Took Spiteful Returned over Glimpse the Sun God and Siren of the Fanged Coast.
There were two Eater of Hope passed. I took the first one, because there was not much else worthwhile in the pack.
P2P1: I took Nimbus Naiad over Boon Satyr. I wasn't committed to a second color yet, but I would certainly play Nimbus Naiad. Boon Satyr is good too, but would require a commitment to green.
I saw some white coming through, but mostly kept picking blue cards. I got a third pick Shipbreaker Kraken *rewarded*
P3P1: Rare was: Sylvan Caryatid. I passed up FIVE dollars of value and took a second Nimbus Naiad over Vaporkin.
P3P3: Took a Purphoros, God of the Forge over Sip of Hemlock and Wavecrash Triton.
Fourth pick Sea God's Revenge.
Saw an eighth pick Wingsteed Rider and a tenth pick Lightning Strike. Wingsteed Rider should not go 8th pick, especially since the person on my right was white/black. The person on my left was black/green splashing red, so he appreciated the Sylvan Caryatid.
Green was super heavy drafted at the table, with one person in green/red, two people in green/white, and someone in blue/green Chromanticore.
Behold the 19 creature blue/black deck. Wow I didn't have much ways to interact with my opponent. No bounce spells or kill spells besides Bile Blight. Based on how open red was I think I should have been blue/red. Getting an eighth pick Wingsteed Rider is absurd though.
Match 1: GR (0-2)
Game 1:
Took a heavy beating from Hammer of Purphoros into Hunter's Prowess on Arena Athlete, making my Shipbreaker Kraken unable to block. The five card advantage from the Hunter's Prowess sealed my fate. I had no way to punish him for going all in aside from Bile Blight which I didn't have.
Game 2:
Mulled to 5. I play a turn 2 Shipwreck Singer, my opponent plays turn 2 Swordwise Centaur into Nyxborn Rollicker Bestow an Staunch-Hearted Warrior into Dragon Mantle. I had a Bile Blight in my opening hand but no second black mana until I was dead.
Match 2: BGR (2-1)
Game 1:
This was the guy on my left. I get 2 turn Fleshmad Steed. I wait a turn until he's tapped out, then go for the Ordeal of Thassa. I end up with a 5/5 bad horse. My opponent plays THREE Returned Centaur milling me for twelve (not himself).
I manage to grind out a win from Sea God's Revenge.
Game 2:
I lose to double Nessian Asp into Nemesis of Mortals into Fated Retribution.
Game 3:
My opponent mulls to 5.
I curve out with Vaporkin into Crackling Triton into Ordeal of Thassa on the Triton then Chorus of the Tides. My opponent doesn't play anything until turn 5, which is a Returned Centaur. When he plays Nessian Asp I have Sea God's Revenge, Eater of Hope] and Shipbreaker Kraken in hand. I just use the Sea God's Revenge to close out the game.
Match 3: Bye
My opponent decided to go home after pairings were done. So I got two packs for only winning one match. Sweet.
