Building the Metagame
Specifically, a dedicated monoblue countermagic guy and another that likes fast black (as well as UR draw-burn shenanigans).
As they are students with limited funds and no store to buy singles from, I need to put together gift packages for them both.
Playsets of Counterspell, Dark Ritual, and the like, backed by favorable trading to ensure that we all have better games.
This not only amps up their decks, making games more challenging (and for me, fun), but it has the benefit of clearing out that much more of my collection.
Especially the white border cards that are good, but I cannot make myself play.
It should be a good year.
The best thing I've found to do with the new sets? I usually want playsets of about nine or ten commons and uncommons from a set - just enough to justify splashing for a full common/uncommon playset (which can usually be had inside the US for under $30). I love buying one of these, and then letting my friends pick over the leftovers. We even split an M12 playset between four people recently and drafted it.
I built a U/W/B deck on a budget of like $40 a little while back. Cryptic Command got banned shortly thereafter.
Really though, Eldrazi Ramp can be built for epic shenanigans in casual.
