I wish I were anywhere else...
I monitor the radio in our TOC, as well as serve as a commo specialist. I don't leave the wire as often as others, even though part of me wishes that I did.
A couple weeks back, I was working my shift in the TOC when we received a call that we always dread. One of our convoy had gotten hit with an IED. All of the guys in my unit got out all right, but the marine officer they were running PSD for was not so lucky. The blast had buckled the vehicle under him and penetrated the armor, igniting the fuel tank. The man foot became wedged between the seat, trapping him. The rest of the truck tried to get him out, but they couldn't free him. The fire grew too hot and rounds began cooking off in the turret and they were forced to back off and watch helplessly.
The three guys in this vehicle are good guys, strong men with big hearts. If I never have to see that look in a good man's eyes ever again, it will be too soon.
