FML...
i just discovered that my best friend (and her husband) are glenn beck devotees. i challenged a glenn beck report her husband posted on FB regarding van jones (with a link to some facts beck left out), and i was told by my friend, "it's not hype, maybe u should watch his show."
... and now she just told me that obama is a "frightening smug prick," and that i need to "wake up."
i feel like i'm about to lose my best friend, because i don't accept glenn beck as 100% truth.
"You seriously seem to be blinded by your political beliefs... (leaving out his "final shot" on this topic)... I'm sorry I just cannot continue to speak with irrational people, good luck in your pursuits."
boy, that sounds like -2 friends for me, including my best friend. if that's how it has to be... whatever.
1) i've been following glenn beck's career for the past few years (since he started on radio) as part of the work i've done on my political talk show. so i am QUITE familiar with him and his work. my friend, BTW, knows that. she ALSO knows that i have been paying close attention to FOX for a LONG time - since 9/11, in fact. now, i wouldn't expect you to know that, but you just assumed, and made an ass of yourself (but, not me). good job.
2) excuse me. FOX has been CAUGHT in mistruth so often that it's just about a daily occurrence! how is that distorted AT ALL? and, for the record, i DO have a level of respect for FOX because of the number of viewers - which is exactly WHY i am so virulent against their "journalistic" methods. the problem is not that it is "mainstream", the problem is that it is, AND calls itself fair, balanced, and news when it FAILS REGULARLY on all three accounts.
3) it's not what she - or anyone else - called obama that bothered me one bit. i'm bothered by the fact that someone who's been following politics for a few months - and by "following politics," i mean "watching glenn beck with her husband" - is telling her best friend - whom she has known to pay attention to politics for the seventeen years she's known me and then some - to "wake up" and watch moar beck because i provided evidence that disputed something in a glenn beck clip her husband had posted on facebook! she did not once give any sort of indication that she'd even read the information in the link i provided, and did not attempt to refute my comment other than that enjoinder.
if you are going to continue this discussion, please take it off my blog and to the appropriate thread (for FOX), or PM (for my personal matters), where i will choose to respond at my leisure. i will not allow you to make false assumptions or statements about me on my blog, and will report and/or edit out any content i feel appropriate if you continue to do so.
From my experience reading your posts on the "Is Fox News lying to its viewers?" thread, your views are completely distorted as to the levels of "untruth" in Fox. You need to give the network more of a try and to be more tolerant towards others' beliefs. There are many Fox viewers so it makes sense at least to maintain a level of respect for the network. Many of the people on this boards seem to believe Fox is extremist and cannot concede a network with such great viewership is in the mainstream.
And I wouldn't be too unsettled by your friend calling Obama a pretentious prick. People bash politicians regularly and this is far from the worse I've heard. You can't expect everyone to bask in his glory and there are many worse things that are being said about him.
- the girl who told me to wake up is my best friend/"sister." known her for 17 years. her husband strikes me as being one of these "tenther"/"birther" chumpstains (a "tenther," BTW, is a person who has suddenly determined that the tenth amendment renders most government programs unconstitutional - which is a gross misreading of the amendment) - a union guy who hates his union, even though he wouldn't be able to afford the house/wife/kid if his union hadn't kicked some ass before he got there.
- the "socialist" guy is a guy i've known for 22 years. also a close friend, he's the guy who co-hosts my (maybe never-coming-back...) political radio show. he thinks this new hatred for islam is his "jewish heritage" kicking in, which is ridiculous (some of our friends think he's doing too much cocaine, which is far more likely an explanation). i told him repeatedly during our discussion that i was physically sickened and repulsed by his sudden and fervent hatred of islam.
i posted up a comment on my facebook that read, "...was today stunned many times by people of varied political persuasions having such seemingly hateful and/or willfully ignorant positions (because it's easier to simplify and hate than to comprehend and rectify). Comprehension and derivation of a solution require people to move beyond differences to see their similarities. In other words: It takes work... but we're lazy Americans! So, we deserve what we get. :(" ... fortunately, a few of my other friends came out in support of me, so i don't feel like i'm in the ****ing twilight zone anymore
EDIT: the "socialist" didn't learn from our three hour shoutfest, and spewed on the facebook message above. FML indeed.
i have had a day of nonstop facepalming. my forehead hurts.
I wouldn't tell that to your friend but if you don't want to lose her as a friend I would try to steer any conversations away from political views because people can get really riled up about that stuff.
