  • The Diabolic Effect: Tutoring in the Casual Setting. - by hamsandwich

8/20/08 - Welcome all casual wanderers! Remember, of course, that not all who wander are lost. In fact, some of us make it a point to wander quite a bit. I'd like to talk today about a necessary mechanic found at, most likely, all kitchen tables. I'm talking about tutoring. When you're not buying booster boxes, or stopping by the card shop to pick up a playset of your favorite rares, alot of us are often found trying to play a deck with one copy(maybe two) of the best card we pulled out of the three or four(or one) booster packs we could afford this week. Many times we try to play with one card in a deck, only to remove it several games later out of frustration and a lack of consistency. T

  • Ask the Judge, 8/20/2008, by Chris Richter

Rules Tip of the Day: A creature with shroud cannot be targeted at all, by any player. Some creatures, like Troll Ascetic, have abilities that allow them to be targeted only by their controller, but that is not how shroud works. Q: If I play Replenish while I have Natural Emergence and Exploration in my graveyard, can I return the Exploration to my hand as part of Natural Emergence's requirement, or would I need to have an enchantment in play before I played Replenish?

  • Ill-Gotten Gains - Musings About the 2008 Hall of Fame, by Ted Knutson

Wednesday, August 20th - In my younger years, I was a huge fan of Olivier Ruel. He was charismatic, funny, traveled the whole world, and told great stories. He was also a very strong Magic player. Oli is one of the best candidates on the Hall of Fame ballot this year. But, in my opinion, Olivier shouldn't be there. Because he's a cheater.

  • You Lika The Juice? - Mixed Bag of Hall of Fame, Kelpie, and Sealed, by Bennie Smith

Wednesday, August 20th - Last week I mentioned the "deck tech" from GP: Denver featuring Conley Woods? Kelpie deck. I found it really exciting since I?d been kicking around the idea that River Kelpie hadn?t been getting the respect it deserved as a card advantage engine, not only just for Persist cards and Makeshift Mannequin, but the also the new Retrace mechanic.

  • Tribal Thriftiness #37 - Warped, by Dave Meeson

Wednesday, August 20th - When was the last time you could have a gross amount of fun playing a tournament-quality deck that relies on a sorcery that costs a brazillion mana, but leaves you with more creatures and your opponent with little to no chance of recovering? Okay, which of you smart-alecks said "with Tooth and Nail in Mirrodin block?" Dave never got into Tooth and Nail, but he is enjoying Warp World - and you can too!

Rules Tip of the Day: When a creature changes controllers, it is removed from combat, if it is in combat. However, if combat damage is on the stack, it will still be dealt as assigned, even to creatures that have been removed from combat. Q: If I have Energy Field in play and I control a planeswalker, can my opponents still deal damage to the planeswalker?

  • Deconstructing Constructed ? Examining A PTQ Top 8, by Josh Silvestri

Tuesday, August 19th - I played at a PTQ this week, and did pretty poor because I didn?t cave in to the gnawing sensation in the back of my head urging me to audible to Kithkin 45 minutes before the tournament started. Instead, I decided to play Doran, and lost to Mono-Green Elves and MRA.

  • The Riki Rules - The Golden Ticket, by Riki Hayashi

Tuesday, August 19th - I?m a little shell-shocked over the decision to cancel the Invitational. We all know the U.S. economy is in the toilet, and responsible companies need to look for measures to cut costs and keep afloat. Is Wizards of the Coast one of those companies? I?m not an economist, but I play one on TV, and the report is that Hasbro, the parent corporation of Wizards of the Coast, had a very good 2007?
