Jan 24, 2014Giblets posted a message on Born of the Gods Multiplayer Set Review (165/165)I checked spoilers everyday being disappointed every time, then there was Courser of Kruphix and that was about it. The biggest disappointment were the minor gods...yes some are playable but they really set the bar high with the first set of gods and these don't compare. I'm always pessimistic about sets, but when when there are only two cards here that even remotely interest me, I think we can call it a dud.Posted in: Cz Blog

Jan 17, 2014Giblets posted a message on Nykson's Back: The Power of Nykthos in Casual Multiplayer MagicFortunately Progenitor Mimic+Sylvan Primordial and the Genesis thing aren't happening. Actually there is a Lurking Predators deck with Genesis and Greater Good but I've actually never seen him revive a Sylvan. The type of land destruction I commonly see doesn't really hinder Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx I agree, but losing just one Glacial Chasm can be problematic at times.Posted in: Cz Blog
I'm all aboard on a Wildfire/Destructive Force deck (gathering pieces for that now, thanks for drawing a lot of attention to that type of deck on the forums; I really enjoy it) and have toyed with Jokulhaups. I'm also helping my sister bring Limited Resources into our meta, all of that makes for some scary times for Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx perhaps.
The land just isn't for me, as I said I don't play many decks with a lot of permanents anymore, especially colored ones...like I said there's a lot of sweeps, Supreme Verdict, Mutilate, etc. These days I play creatureless drain and pox lists a lot, and I'm about to start piloting Balustrade Spy dredge, because I'm gross like that.
I'm going to try to push people to invest in this land in my meta because there are a lot of decks that would get a lot out of it like Lurking and Enchantment decks. -
Jan 17, 2014Giblets posted a message on Born of the Gods Multiplayer Set Review (165/165)Oh yeah it's all about the Vigilance on this one, the card is basically going to be on autopilot all game. I love all the white army in a can cards but this might be my favorite thus far.Posted in: Cz Blog

Jan 17, 2014Giblets posted a message on Nykson's Back: The Power of Nykthos in Casual Multiplayer MagicLand; land is where my meta commonly falters in regards to deck construction. Land is a tough sell for novice and inexperienced players. Players are generally far more likely to drop cash on some amazing creature because they foresee this is how they are going to win games.Posted in: Cz Blog
One aspect I particularly respect about Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is that it's generally a decent replacement for some of the most powerful lands in the game, Serra's Sanctum and Gaea's Cradle.
Personally, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is not a land that is going to see any play from me because playing permanents isn't how I've been playing magic recently. I agree with you that most metas aren't going to see mass removal on a regular basis but unfortunately a few years of me consistently dropping sweeps has led to a very dangerous battlefield for creatures. Not only have my peers emulated me, but sometimes I even see sweeps being played abysmally in synergy
decks that have no business removing their own creatures.
In regards to land removal; which is where overpowered lands can fail you...I used to be able to play Glacial Chasm with no fear, now I commonly have to be concerned about Acidic Slime, Sylvan Primordial, and Terastodon. My playgroup might not be investing in the greatest land bases of all time but they are definitely spending a lot of effort into removing them from others.
I've kind of derailed; take this all as just an anecdote from one meta in particular. I completely agree with you that adding 2-4 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx into most multiplayer decks is going to be a drastic upgrade every time, even in my meta. This land is the real deal; use it with enchantment decks, use it with Lurking Predators decks, use it with fish, use it with elves, use it with monstrous creatures, and definitely use it with Extort, Pestilence, and Gray Merchant decks.
Devotion in general has really shaken up multiplayer; which was already a haven for mono color decks. Ash Zealot was never bad per se, but add Fanatic of Mogis, Purphoros, God of the Forge, and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and she is just going to over perform every time. I just enjoy that devotion opens up new possibilities for every color and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is the card that makes it all work to its highest potential. -
Jan 17, 2014Giblets posted a message on Born of the Gods Multiplayer Set Review (165/165)I reread Brimaz, King of Oreskos three times... kept looking at the power/toughness and the abilities then back to the mana cost with a stupid look on my face...what the hell is this? At least it's Legendary I suppose...RIP Blade Splicer; your services are no longer required.Posted in: Cz Blog

Jan 15, 2014Giblets posted a message on Born of the Gods Multiplayer Set Review (165/165)That's true, Rhystic Study doesn't always work but it's pretty hard to pay to stop it when there's Ghostly Prison and Pendrell Mists on the table; which I typically see in these decks. Ephara, God of Polis wouldn't be my choice but I see what you're saying. I'll check back later when there are more cards spoiled.Posted in: Cz Blog

Jan 15, 2014Giblets posted a message on Born of the Gods Multiplayer Set Review (165/165)Glad you're doing this again; not a lot to see here with the set so far.Posted in: Cz Blog
I don't know about Ephara, God of Polis, taxing UW enchantment decks are probably going to be running Rhystic Study over this? I don't see the point.
The seven devotion on these gods is a major setback.
Underwhelmed by Mogis, God of Slaughter, but another god with "each opponent" gets me slightly hopeful for the gods yet to be spoiled.
Really not liking the tribute and inspiration cards, can we have monstrosity again please? -

Oct 21, 2013Giblets posted a message on Tips on Effectively Using Mass Removal in Multiplayer"You typically want the game to consist of many small decisions that add up over time rather than having the game be decided by small numbers of incredibly significant plays."Posted in: Cz Blog
This is some incredibly great advice in particular and something I always try keep in the back of mind; time and time again I've watched players fail because they've bet everything on a few turns and played too conservatively.
The majority of the time if you just play magic in a linear fashion you're better off than trying to make complicated decisions; it's turn four...I have four mana...there are six+ smallish creatures on the table...I have mutilate...I cast mutilate. Yet, time and time again I see players hold out because I think many apply far too much value to their sweeps; they feel sweeping out low cmc creatures is wasteful or they are paranoid about being wrathless later when bigger creatures hit the table. If you're going to play any deck that has control elements, you have to come to terms with the fact you need to stabilize the board as early as possible...especially in the days of extort.
This was a good write up, I enjoyed it; sorry I basically just repeated much of what you wrote, but I wanted you to know your scenarios and observations have been noted and seen in my meta as well.
While we're on removal, and since I didn't post on the Commander 2013 blog or forum thread...Toxic Deluge is beyond broken in multiplayer; I can't wait to play it! -
Oct 17, 2013Giblets posted a message on A second look at Theros in Multiplayer (now with actual experience!)Grey Merchant is gross; it has done nothing but over perform for me; Obliterator just breaks the card and it's been nothing but amazing.Posted in: Cz Blog
I will agree that red has been creeping back into relevance, what's keeping me away from red now is mostly the massive price tags as you mentioned. The lack of card draw is always an issue but I agree with you that in a reasonably short time the color has gained plenty.
Now I love Fanatic of Mogis and all, but it's outclassed by Gray Merchant of Asphodel ; how is this card a common? It's just relentless; I don't even view it as a creature: it's a devotion drain spell I can revive endlessly from my graveyard. I've gone up to a full four of these in my midrange deck and dropped Exsanguinate down to two with no regrets thus far. -
Oct 1, 2013Giblets posted a message on Waste Not's implications on Multiplayer.Your original multiplayer discard primer on the Wizard's forum was some of your first material I stumbled into; I love these types of decks and I'm super excited to just cram Waste Not into my existing shell which is quite similar to your "Waste Not Control 2" list.Posted in: Cz Blog
The combo options are also intriguing. I was very pleased to get Shrieking Infliction recently and this is going to be another great addition to the archetype. -
Sep 9, 2013Giblets posted a message on Multiplayer Theros Review (249/249) - Part 1Why am I most excited right now about Purphoros, God of the Forge? Probably because red is so overdue. Thanks for the write up.Posted in: Cz Blog

It gets bleak pretty fast when you start comparing dual cards to all the mono options; worse so with tricolor cards...the card pool is just so limited. I think you've included the cards that fit your criteria.
Maybe Simic Sky Swallower?
Fair enough; I just think with so many great ETB creatures it performs pretty well. I wasn't comparing it to mono 5cmc options; just what was available in R/G.
I feel Shivan Wurm should be listed.
At this point being in blue for Notion Thief and 8 cantrips + Treasure Cruise almost seems win more, but I can't rely on the mono black Serum Powder route because we don't allow the friendly multiplayer mulligan; yet, my mono black still performs fine with out Powder and pre-Dark Deal.
Delirium Skeins, Ill-Gotten Gains, and Smallpox seem awkward with Notion Thief. I don't want to splash blue if it serves no purpose; cantrips and draw to dig into combo is one thing but I'm starting to doubt the inclusion of Notion Thief?
I see your reasoning on Gemstone Caverns; I'll have to give that land a go.
I'm uneasy about damage negation;Soul Spike has tested well for me but I'm not super keen on giving up 4 deck spots to it. Venser's Journal seems clunky, Angel's Grace is not a color I want to dip into. Exsanguinate? Ivory Tower?
I'm looking for input from anyone who has successfully piloted Notion Thief; I'm not interested in the overly grindy variants of these types of decks.
Cabal Ritual is of interest but is slightly messy with Treasure Cruise.
Arcane Denial seems decent here as well.
This is kind of the shell I'm at:
4x Ponder
4x Preordain
4x Sickening Dreams
4x Treasure Cruise
4x Dark Ritual
4x Soul Spike
4x Waste Not
4x Notion Thief
Too many cantrips?
I want to do all of the broken things.
Your ranting and raving about Soulfire Grand Master was very amusing.
You have quite a pleasant voice and are well-spoken; which is everything if I'm going to listen to you for an hour.
I think the text you posted here is a great accompanying piece; I often paused the audio and referred back to the text if you were discussing a card I was especially interested in.
I'm ready for the next batch now please.
