I currently run 4 Misty Rainforest and 4 Verdant Catacombs. Is there a statistical reason to switch to Windswept Heath/Marsh Flats like I'm seeing on recent lists?
I have playsets of Overgrown Tomb, Godless Shrine, Temple Garden, Woodland Cemetery, Isolated Chapel, and Sunpetal Grove. I need 21 lands as I'm planning on using 1 Vault of the Archangel and 1 Gavony Township. Any help is appreciated, thanks!
I would like to take advantage of Deathrite Shaman, Thragtusk, and Prime Speaker Zegana, because I own playsets and I like the cards; but using them is not mandatory if other cards work better. It's an expensive deck, but I do own 1-2 copies of a lot of the staples such as 1 Restoration Angel, 1 Snapcaster Mage, 1 Sphinx's Revelation, 2 Abrupt Decay, and some shocklands. Help me build or just discuss options and strategies! Thanks in advance.
EDIT: One reason I don't mind shelling out some cash/trade bait to build this deck is because a lot of the money staples will either hold their value because of other formats or will be in Standard for quite awhile still.
After watching the show for a bit and studying the game from afar, I think I want to start playing. What would be the best purchases to make in order to build either a Shadow Paladin, Dark Irregulars, Pale Moon, or Granblue deck? I'm not sure which deck I want to make, so I'm asking what to buy to build each. Note: I don't want to buy singles
I usually get impatient and don't wait that long. I look at it in terms of how much money I would need to spend, regardless of the number of cards I need. If I'm about $40 worth of singles from completing a set, that's usually when I just buy up the singles and call it good. Lots of times I just keep on playing anyway and see if I can complete a 2nd set.
Do you find yourself acquiring play sets of the cards ever through redemption? Or do you just acquire 2nd/3rd/4th copies by playing in IRL drafts/sealed, buying sealed product, or trading the stuff?
I'm with you there... I like to play limited to collect and redeem out a copy of each set. You are likely going to spend more than $120 to collect a set that way, but the trade off is that you have the fun of playing limited in the process. I always include "fun" in my MTGO budget so as to remind myself that I am not doing this as a profit making venture but as a hobby and for the enjoyment of playing a game. I find that if I get too caught up in card values and profit chasing it starts to ruin my fun.
It is good to always be aware of how many cards off you are from completing a set, and to know exactly what those missing cards would cost were you to buy them from a bot. I make spreadsheets for myself and as I get closer to completing a set I make sure the prices are updated so I can decide when its a good time to stop playing limited and just complete the set by buying the rest as singles.
Yeah that's a great point. If I'm missing 2 mythics and 3 bulk rares, the cost to buy them from a bot might be cheaper than playing another draft or sealed event.
I mainly want to use MtGO to play limited events during the week or when I can't get to a LGS to play. But I don't want to pay the same way I would in real life because I don't get to walk away with my cards and winnings. If I could do what you do effectively and maybe redeem a set if I get close to being able to do so; I would love it.
I added up the value of the mid prices of magic.tcgplayer to get that number scg is always going to be more expensive, Yes 6 sealds is not enough to get every card in the set considering that there are 53 rares and 15 mythics in the set which only happen in every 8 packs opened so you would open aproximently 7 mythics and 48 rares and you be out 150 tickets it is more reasonable to just buy the set.
Yeah I guess you're right. Financially it would make more sense to just buy the set. But you are also getting to play in the sealed events at the same time, and hopefully most will end up being cost-free if you win. I think playing MtGO purely for redemption is silly, but doing it to play and redeem for paper cards can be worth it. I think I just don't see the value in playing MtGO without planning on redeeming the cards; and that's my problem I need to get over.
So for return to Ravnica, you can get a complete set for 115 tickets, if it costs you more then 115 tickes to draft you have already lost vaue,
The cards all put together are approximately worth around 205 dollars on the paper market, thus making a 40 dollar profit on each box you sell, so in conclusion, if it costs you more then 115 tickets to draft the set, just buy the set outright, redeem it, and you're only out 125 dollars, you can sell the box for 205 if you so choose.
I would more than likely be doing sealed events, because it allows me more packs to open, greater winnings, and I can enter with prize packs without tickets. So if I play in 5 sealed events, assuming I don't use ANY prize packs; it would cost me $120. I have to imagine between those 30 packs opened plus trading duplicates I could have a full set. A RTR full set on SCG is $279.
Is my math wrong or is only 5 sealed events + trading unrealistic to acquire 1 of each card.
If you draft a lot, it's pretty easy. You lose a small premium to the bots but as long as you are only missing 3-5 cards it's not too bad.
Yeah I figure after a few sealed events (mostly using winnings to pay forward) I would only be missing a dozen or two cards. Trade away multiples and play a few more events and I'll be almost there. My issue with acquiring good constructed cards IRL is that I don't play sealed often enough (or draft even), and when I get winnings I open them on the spot because it's so easy to. I think playing MtGO would allow me to save my packs to play more sealed events and also let me trade more easily.
I want to start playing MtGO, but I want to use the redemption program as much as I can to make the most out. Paper magic is where I really want to play and MtGO is purely because it's convenient to play more often. So, if I were to play mostly sealed and draft. How realistic would it be to trade for missing singles and use the redemption to acquire the paper versions of cards. The redemption fee doesn't bother me, I was just wondering how easy it is to trade off your cards you have multiples of to get the singles to complete a set. Thanks for the help and advice, everyone.
