So I wanted to get into this deck because I really like red and it seemed relatively cheap. But now with that GP win, I fear the deck will rise in price. So my question is this, it is wise for me to wait and see if the price drops back down again, or should I just go for it? And in the event where I choose to wait, do you have an estimate in how long would it take for the prices to drop? I realize the latter question is too ambiguous, so feel to ignore it.

So I'm looking to build something other than burn.

    "Cards you already own"
I own nothing, but I would be building whatever deck I choose slowly.

    "Colors you like to play"
Red and White are my top two. Open to all five colors tho.

"Style you like to play (control, combo, aggro, midrange, tempo, ramp, rogue)"
Aggro, tempo, and if control something similar to 8Rack (proactive). Really, I just like throwing direct damage at my opponent (hence why I'm planning on building burn), so aside for all other recommendations you people could offer me, maybe a fun burn hybrid?

"Level you want to play at, or aim to build up to (causal, fmn, ptq)"
    FNM at most for now.

Jeff Hoogland's Jeskai Aggro seems that it would be right up your alley. It ticks all your boxes.

    Deck list here http://www.starcitygames.com/events/coverage/jeskai_aggro_with_jeff_hooglan.html

    This looks really nice. Thanks!

Hello, everyone. I've got some questions. So I'm looking to get into Modern properly by building budget mono red burn - specifically, the Saffron build over at mtggoldfish for mono red - And I was wondering if there were any other budget card recommendations that I might use in addition to those listed in the deck. Going forward, I'd like to turn the deck into Boros burn and I wanted to know of a good list to follow. And finally, when upgrading, what should I prioritize first? Lands? Goblin Guides? And really, any other advice that might come in handy.

Saphron's version isn't to shabby, although I would run T-swift over marauders any day. Also flames of the bloodhand is just too costly so I would avoid that aswell. Devil isn't quite good enough for top shelf burn lists but he's an absolute beast in mono red. A hand with 3 devils can absolutely ravage your oponents lifetotal. Also if you have bloodmoon that's a useful card, but super expensive.

As for upgrading I'd say you could go either way. Personally I got guide first but that's because I run burn in legacy aswell.

Thanks for the reply. What is T-swift, though?

    Hi,

I'm no expert since I play burn for only a few months but the first things you can upgrade from Saffron's list is a monastery swiftspear playset.

There is two expensive things in burn : running 8 fetches + 4 ravlands (since running less than that is pointless) and running 4 goblin guides.

I'd go for the lands first for two reasons : you can play boros charm and powerfull sideboard cards (RIP, stony silence, path to exile, lighting helix, kor firewalker). That and you can also play searing blaze at instant speed (and it's an important card in the current meta).
Goblin guide is a great card and the few points he's going to grab early are often the ones that make you win, but it tends to be limited in a metagame full of creature. If you're playing in a combo/low creature metagame, it's better.

I can give you the boros list is used to play before upgrading it recently :

It's not really budget and it's probably not optimal since it was a deck I used to play for fun at FNMs or lend to friends/newbies wanting to give a try in modern at my LGS.
Vexing devil is not a good card but I love it.
Thunderous wrath is serious fun when allows you to yell "TOPDECK" and win out of nowhere, but it also comes in your second mulligan hand when you're on the play so...

Much appreciated! I do plan on ultimately upgrading into a Naya build, but in the meanwhile I'd like to have a little fun trying out a Boros build. Again, thanks much for the suggestions.:)

Really loving this deck. The only problem I have is unrelated to the deck and that is my own inexperience in both the game in general and the Modern format. Only remedy for that is to play more. Played against a mono red goblins deck a while ago and Kor Firewalker just... walked all over them. :p This deck is a lot of fun and I cannot wait to finish building it.

Blue/Red combo? You should play Storm. It's pretty cheap and a lot of fun to play. It'll definitely test your ability to sequence, however.

Favorite Playstyle (Aggro, Midrange, Control, Combo): Aggro with a pinch of control.
How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP): At least FNM level.
Favorite Cards/Colors: White is my favorite, then it's a tie between blue and black.
Budget: At the moment, around $100.
    Staples Owned:None sadly.

As an aside, I'm looking for a which I can get the most utility out of my cards, especially my creatures.Bonus if it's something that can let me disrupt my opponent's field/hand somewhat while still having emphasis on turning creatures sideways

Play tokens! The event deck is around $50 (and a lot of times you can find it for cheaper at stores trying to get rid of them. I saw a friend buy one for $40 the other day) and gives you a workable shell for BW tokens. It's definitely more on the aggressive side but can play a midrange game with your removal spells and Thoughtseize.

Ok, good,so I'm on the right track. Going to see if I can get the Modern Event deck soon, however, cheapest I've seen them is about $70 sadly. But yes, that seems like my style.

I can personally testify to the explosiveness of BW Tokens, I just finished my playtesting vs the modern event deck. Even in precon form, it is capable of fast masses of flying tokens with anthems, and can kill you by turn 5 if your only answers are spot removal. The early hand disruption is really solid, Tidehollow is amazing and so is IOK.

Won three off the back of Crusader, 1 game I saved myself with a clinch Bile Blight. Lost two, both pretty badly. The deck is the REAL DEAL.

So I am a relatively new player to the competitive scene looking to get into Modern rather than Standard and I am liking Orzhov Tokens as the deck that I'd want to build first. My question is, is it worth to go for the Modern Event Deck instead of trying another budget list? Thanks.

I disagree with parinoid. Limited (where you show up and have to build your own deck on the spot with just those cards) can be very daunting for a beginner. You need to have at least a few weeks experience before you really understand such important things as how much land you need and which cards are actually good.

My suggestion to get started right off the bat is go down to your shop and see if they have a casual night. You can play your Spectral Legions deck, and probably lose, but at least you'll work out the general rules of the game and see how they actually work in practice.

Or maybe Yugioh is closer to Magic than I realise and you'll be totally fine. I've never played it, so...

Anyway, welcome to Magic! Hope you have fun!

Yea, I'll try to see if they have a casual night. By probably, you meant surely, correct? XD

And much to my dismay, the more I learn about Magic, the more differences I find between it and Yugioh. But I guess that in itself is a good thing since it should make for a fresh, new experience.

    And thank you very much!

Hello everyone. I am new to Magic: The Gathering, thinking of making the switch from Yu-Gi-Oh. I've been reading on various resources (including this forum) and I think I have an idea of how the game works. To get myself started, I bought an Innistrad Intro Pack (Spectral Legions). Now I just need someone to play my first game with. I'm thinking of going to my nearest card shop and try out FNM. Do you all think this is a good idea? Here to having a blast playing Magic!
