Has nobody heard the expression "it's not whether you win or lose it's how you play the game"? I know losing isn't winning but if you only have fun playing Magic when you're winning maybe it's time to find a new hobby. This is why me and my girlfriend don't play together anymore. Even when I am losing I still have fun playing the game of Magic. I make casual conversation with my opponent, play the cards I am dealt and try to pull out a victory. Win or lose we both have fun.

    I agree.
    Quote from LandLord

Trolling and Trash talking by definition is NOT socially accepted and is considered negative actions. So yea in my opinion it is asking too much. You are also operating under the assumption that all your opponent wanted was a "W" in the win column. What if their only goal was to have an enjoyable game with a fellow Magic player which was ruined by your incessant, childish, trashtalking? Are you saying that your idea fun should be held above all others playing the game?

Uhm, if online and I don't know my opponent, yes? Of course I hold my idea of fun above that of strangers.

    Quote from LandLord

Sowing ill will among friends and playgroups is your idea of fun? Making people get mad while playing a game that is suspose to be fun and make you happy. Sounds a little sociopathic to me. I am glad you aren't one of the bad ones on MTGO but remind me to steer clear of your card shops.

If you can make such judgements on someone over a post on a forum I'd rather not have such an ignorant person at my card shop, I'm sure Acid Flashback would agree too.

    Quote from CletusShifflett
Sorry to say but most people who can deal with trash talk are way more secure about their play and comfortable interacting with others than people who feel the need to make everything safe and antiseptic for the people just starting out or who will plateau and never get any better. If it ruins the game for you, maybe you should stay in the kiddie pool and not come out. Bear in mind I'm not talking about dominating newb players and then giving them hell for not being experienced, but when you've played the game for a while, if you still get angry or incensed by someone giving you hell, you should go back to playing Words with Friends where you can stay in your emotional cloud.

Wow, this 1,000 times. I'm suprised I havn't posted something like this already.
    I'm sure there's no trashtalking here http://www.clubpenguin.com/ :p

    Quote from CletusShifflett

Yes it's something that children say and I hope you're not a fully grown adult asking anyone to take this as a serious point.

It does sound like something that would be told to me when I was 6 years old. Although I do agree with it and don't mind losing Wink

    Quote from LandLord

I personally feel that the immaturity attached to the game of Magic is hendering not only the growth of the player base but also peoples general outlook of MTG players. With all the elitism and trashtalking it's hard for me at least to actually sit back and enjoy the game.

Then go find a new hobby. Something less competitive.

    Infraction for flaming.

I have to say that usually in the mirror, the first person to try and drop something big loses because they tap too much land to stop the follow-up. I love someone dropping something turn 6 so I can follow-up with an unblocked Karn. Unblocked Karn in the mirror = GG.

Missing land drops is also brutal.

The status of your Nephalia is also critical. If someone drops a Ghost Quarter before their opponent drops a Nepahlia, kill that GQ ASAP. Land management and timing in the mirror is huge.

    Completely true.

    Quote from redtwister
In the mirror, even if you leave enough mana to counter 1 counter, by turn 6, the chances are that your opponent has multiple counters and removal.

Turn 6 Bloodline Keeper with a Mana Leak in hand still is either 1) countered or 2) removed if your opponent has 4 or more land drops... same with Turn 8 Titan/Consecrated Sphinx, etc.

Best creature in the mirror is Snapcaster Mage.

Draw and Drownyard are your wincons in the mirror, until your opponent gets greedy.

Again I agree, solid post and explanation. This is the U/B match up summarised in these two posts. Take notes.

Somebody said U/B is hard to play. It's actually really easy to play. Just hard to figure out. Once you get it, it's an easy deck to play. That's all I got.

Awesome input, and judging by some of the posts in this forum and people I've met in real life, I completely disagree, but that's a whole new topic.

    Quote from Holy Llama
They drop a Grafdigger's. You say K. and then play as per usual. The only thing we lose in the early game to a Grafdigger's is Think Twice FB and Snapcaster utility. Sure, it's annoying, but it's not backbreaking at all. Their cage is -1 CA to them, so it comes out equally if you only have one TT and they are ahead if you see multiples. BUT they are only ahead when you get to the point where you would have cast both TT AND flashed them both back, which is very late in the game at which point we've already either stabilized or lost.

Additionally, Snapcaster is in no way "neutered" against a Cage. A flash bear is just as much a removal spell as Shock is, albeit not as powerful as a full Snapcaster. He still 1-for-1s, which is fine.

The only effect a Cage has on the game in my experience is that the endgame is slower. They are sacrificing a card early (and even more if they draw into multiples, trolololol) in order to keep us out of our endgame advantage, which honestly seems like a favorable trade-off for us since our early game is our weakest and our late game is our strongest.

I do play 1 Steel Sabotage in the board, but it's for RDW t2 shrine on the draw and Gx t2 sword on the draw (and Tempered Steel? if that's still a deck), not because I'm scared of a Cage. I wouldn't bring it in against that card, and I wouldn't ever waste it against that card.

While I agree with you to some extent, it really depends on how many cards you can actually flash back. If only a few the I completely would play as if nothing happened if the cage got dropped. However, I probably would board a single copy in because I love my 4 snapcasters so much :p

When I lived in London for 6 months it was really annoying finding a store through the Wizards locator. It was weird because being London I assumed there would be quite a few, eventually I found one that was pretty good but your best bet is probably finding a comic type shop in the area and if it doesn't have magic surely someone there would know. Perhaps not completely tap out but by using 4-6 mana for a threat you will be down a lot of resource in your opponents turn.
Also, every card your opponent draws is another card less to mill for win. In the mirror the most effective and less risky way to win the game is by drownyards. Playing a threat is a risky play and a better opponent will definately capitalize on that.
I guess I'm just playing against nothing but terrible opponents, because playing a threat seems to win me the game.

Not sure if this is sarcasm or not but if not, I wouldn't be suprised. I've not met many people who can play UB well. Against bad U/B players I just wait till they play something and drop a grave titan or something stupid next turn so I can end the round before 45minutes. Being bad is really punishing for U/B.

I love how most assume that U/B control v U/B control always has to turn into a "counter war".

With surgical extractions, bloodline keepers, liliana's, and now jace in the sideboard, this MU can turn into anything but a "counter war".

There is nothing wrong with playing a tapout style of game against the mirror in my opinion if your hand / sideboard calls for it. And yes, Jace is highly highly effective in this MU playing that sort of style. Turn 3 - Lili (countered) - T4 BK countered - T5 Jace.. they wont always have the counter by then, especially if you have teh extractions to make sure.

And yes, I *do* really know the mu, and sort of agree with Eizel on his points, if not his tone in getting them across.

Turn 3 Lili, T4 BK and T5 Jace is not playing U/B Control, it's some odd tempo style deck. I'll explain the match up at the end because people don't know what they are talking about.

    Quote from TylerDC
I play 2 jace becausse i want to resolve my 2 USZ.

Occasionally, jace resolves, and i then win the game.

jace is extremely powerful in the ub v ub matchup. And the scenario comes up VERY frequently. Opponent plays a threat ala lord of lineage. i have 2 mana leaks in hand, i mana leak him, and he still has enough mana to pay for my mana leak and hold up mana leak/negate or even dissipate.
my turn. I cast jace, he dissipates/negates or something. i mana leak. resolve jace.
i immediately 0 jace, next turn he almost HAS to attack jace. delaying his lord flip, and i get to 0 jace one more time. sure i need to answer his lord, but i just got 2 turns where he essentially was time walked, answering my jace. i got to mill him 20 cards, and maybe i was able to keep him around to mill for a solid 30... if you mill 20 cards and are able to untap on an empty board. you are definitely ahead in the ub mirror.

worst case scenario, i don't resolve jace, but now i can untap and usz myself for a billion.

Thank you for proving my point of it only working if playing against bad players. Without a threat there is absolutely no reason for your opponent to do that.

    Quote from Moruk
I find it ironic that you spout off about how people don't understand the mirror match when you make posts like this. If you have more Drownyards out than your opponent, or you have pressure on the board in some form, at some stage they will be forced to spend mana on their turn to attempt to resolve a threat. They can not sit there and do nothing while they're behind in the game.

    I agree.
    Quote from Moruk

The point of Jace, Grave Titan, Bloodline Keeper, or any other threat that you bring in is so that you have a follow up play to seal the deal when you force your opponent into this position. It's not there to slap down on turn 5 and hope it wins you the game. If your opponent can fight a counter war on their turn, lose, and then you just untap and say go, that was a complete waste of winning the war.

Now this just goes completely against what you said.
So, you force your opponent into making a play by using drownyards. Okay.
You win the counterwar as your opponent has less mana than you do. Okay
Then that is usually game by continueing to use drownyards. NOT tap out for something to give your opponent a chance to get back in the game.
    Quote from Moruk

Please stop trying to tell people they've 'never played the mirror' and talking as if you're an expert on the game, because clearly, you're not.

What exactly constitutes to an expert? I may not be an expert but that surely means there are very little experts in Australia. Maybe next time you're in QLD I can give you a game and teach you how to really play U/B, free of charge of course.

Sorry, but that doesn't work.I was looking for something more along the lines of "Turn 1 I have a 5/5 haste, double strike, and infect" (or at least something that will guarantee you win regardless of what your opponent is running, disregarding cards like gut shot or mental misstep), not "I mill my opponent perfectly and they instantly lose". Try to keep it within your own deck. Act as if your opponent does nothing but draw, go, and that you don't have to rely on them milling the perfect cards for your deck.
tl;dr: Don't rely on your opponent's deck to win.

(just like this thread has been for me for a couple of minutes to take a break from work)

It's not a waste of time for me or why would I do it? It's fun.
    Quote from El Tombo

for the people that like to trashtalk
    Keep 2 things in mind:
    1. A lot of players don't bother checking the chat thing or just minimize it. (or they are also doing other stuff)

    2. A lot of people can't understand what you are typing even if they WOULD check the chat (because face it, the world is a wee bit bigger than native english speakers and you don't need a complete grasp of the language to be able to play magic online)

    Cool?
    Quote from El Tombo

To the people that might worry about getting trashtalked, like pointed out here by others, don't take the bait and just play your game.
Besides, magic online has quite a lot of tools to help you with this (minimize chat window, block users, report players for violation of code of conduct, the orcs ..)

Makes me think you don't really know what I'm talking about.

    Quote from jawas
Im from Philly so yeah glad you picked up on that.

To the AngelsRNG mega post, realize that what is rude or trash talking to one person might be nothing to the next. I guess only your opinion matters, but since the OP was talking about Rude behavior, it is interesting to see what people think Rude behavior is. This is why we have harassment lawsuits, cause someone thinks their behavior is acceptable while someone else finds it offensive.

The problem with online is knowing the true meaning behind what someone is saying/typing. When your playing some random person you've never built a relationship even the most minor of things can be looked at as rude. I was watching a stream the other night, and someone who lost in an 8-4 draft said good luck to the streamer and he went off about who RUDE it was to say something like that cause cause he played with skill not luck? Than the streamer followers were typing in chat, no you idiot he was wishing you good luck in the finals.

So yeah, I did read the OP part and my replies were more about what people see as trash talking. Whining about a loss can be just as much trash talking as a bad winner. The post was about how we treat each other online versus than how we treat each other in say the environment of a LSG face to face. Cause I know if half the stuff said to me on MTGO was ever said to me or others in the LSGs I play at someone would be bleeding.

Okay. So violence okay but whining or trash talking is okay. Suprising that I get called immature in this thread.

You know, to be honest, I could not care less if after trash talking my opponent laughs and joins in or is actually hurt by my comments. I really don't mind, I just find most of the passive aggressive behavior on MTGO to actually bewilder me(The ones that say "lucker" "Great top deck" etc etc). I don't understand these people at all.
ITT: People who don't understand people who can have fun in a different way to themselves.

    Quote from MedRage
I don't mind certain elements of trash talk... I play Pauper Burn almost exclusively; and I get raged on all the time for playing a "no skill" deck; or a "little kid" deck.... I find a person raging to be hilarious. I can say that I've only done it back when I feel someone is toying with me when they can easliy win (which doesn't happen often).

What bothers me more than trash talking or raging is the sly insult disguised as a compliment. Or when they GG you, and when you GG them back - they make a rude remark....

    Example of both in one:
I have a Kiln Fiend down against a post player who's at 7 life...
I have 2 cards in hand; he has 6...
He taps out all his mana to play a mulldrifter and drops a Glimmerpost (assuming he drew it off the mulldrifter) he goes to 10 life...
On my turn - I draw a mountain and play it; chain lightning his mulldrifter, and fireblast him for 4; and with a 7/2 Kiln Fiend - I hit him for lethal..

    Before that happens he says:
    Him: Wow, GG
    Me: GG
Him: Amazing Top Decks (this is what i mean by "insults disguised as compliments.")
Me: Thanks, but I've drawn 2 straight mountains. I was just waiting for you to tap out.
Him: Yeah, whatever, you're so lucky.

I bit my tongue and just kept on... This happened a month ago though, and it still bothers me. And I've been raged on plenty since then; and can't remember what any of them said.

So... That type of trash talk (the weak kind) - is what gets to me. I can handle a person cursing me out all day... That amuses me....

Everyone in the thread should stop writing like a hurt child and read this post.
Also, for anyone that has played enough online games to realise that saying GG is now a negative thing,

Also, MTGO is played on real computers by real people, making you a douche in real life. There is no differentiating it.

The fact that you are only a douche when you can get away with it makes you a grade A coward. Have fun with that. But stop fooling yourself.

As if I call people names on the internet it makes me a coward and a douche? Isn't that what you just did to me? I really think you should think about a coherent argument before you post on the forums. It just makes you look rather angry at the topic with no real basis as to why.

People do make it bother them, that's one of the things that makes it fun, that people are immature enough to get angry over this. Another thing that makes it fun is when people also enjoy it and do it back.

    Quote from Tykimeister
I don't usually trash talk with people online. But when you get a guy whos screaming all this lame crap, I usually just respond with:

I'm glad you found a way to cope with having a small penis.

I don't really know what this contributes, but I'd attribute that reply to a young adolescent if that was said to me online.

    Quote from CletusShifflett
If trash talking affects you unduly, you're probably taking the game too seriously or have inferiority issues that flare up when people give you a ribbing. Being passive aggressive on someone when you get lucky and win is way more antisocial than just expressing modest amusement to their tirades, especially if you actually think you're the better player. No one likes a snarky, uptight dbag and you come off like a nerdy hall monitor type with no friends. Just laugh it off and you'll not only look like the better man, it's a classier way to live in general.

The condition on it barely matters I think the biggest problem would be birds and such I guess.

I think the real drawback is the fact it cant dome but on the other hand a second use out of it is pretty handy.

Whats the verdict on this card... is it that there is no real deck for it or is it just not better than incinerate.

That's the key there. I drafted Mind Control, Serra Angel and don't forget that Sacred Wolf+Trollhide combo. Good cards in draft are COMPLETELY different from constructed. I mean look at delver, he's usually pretty bad in draft.

Card is cool I guess but I'd rather run incinerate if I was red for the reach.

I just dug something up towards the blanket statement that "Ponder is terrible in UB" which is as helpful as ChannelFireball articles that can be shortened into "play better". (I like Shearer because he writes useful stuff.)

You have a nuanced reasoning which I can only applaud and agree with.

In both posts in this thread I explained my reasoning.

All these examples seem EXTREMELY situational. Making the card not worth running in anything.

In regards to those two cards, I would run Tribute to Hunger any day(I have 1 mainboard and 1 sideboard). Instant speed, Life gain, Reusable with Snapcaster? What is not to love?

Lili on the other hand is sorcery speed. Where's the fun in that?

Your argument against Jace is flawed. Very, very flawed. He cost less than a titan and is arguably more threatening.

Yes you have to tap 5 mana for him, and that leaves you @ a disadvantage in a counter war. Well, it happens. Your opponent drew more counters, and whether or not you tapped for a jace or for a titan, you would lose that war all the same. So there is no argument there.

You're also assuming Jace will be played into counter magic. Negative Ghostrider. What if they tapped out for their fatty, you won the counter war, and are untapping to their clear board?

You said if they tap for a Jace, you tap right back for a fatty, no?

If you do that in a game against me thinking your titan, a creature, will last longer than my jace, a planeswalker, I'll laugh in your face and Go for the Throat or Tragic Slip your titan, and watch you squirm as you get milled.

I will resolve a Jace against you if you have that kind of mentality. Just throwing that out there right now.

You are wrong and make it look like you have no idea what you are talking about, not to mention it looks like the entire post was written from your high horse to make condescending remarks to Holy Llama.

Yes you have to tap 5 mana for him, and that leaves you @ a disadvantage in a counter war. Well, it happens. Your opponent drew more counters, and whether or not you tapped for a jace or for a titan, you would lose that war all the same. So there is no argument there.

The fact that you expect someone to actually try to resolve a titan in a control vs control matchup, specifically UB vs UB shows me you don't really know the match up at all.

You're also assuming Jace will be played into counter magic. Negative Ghostrider. What if they tapped out for their fatty, you won the counter war, and are untapping to their clear board?

Then your opponenet is really bad and you could probably win that match up with playing a single flying men.

If you do that in a game against me thinking your titan, a creature, will last longer than my jace, a planeswalker, I'll laugh in your face and Go for the Throat or Tragic Slip your titan, and watch you squirm as you get milled.

I'd probably rather not play against such a rude opponent to be honest, but anyways. You DO NOT win control match ups with creatures. If you are, either your opponent is really really bad or you are running some creature heavy variant of U/B.

I will resolve a Jace against you if you have that kind of mentality. Just throwing that out there right now.

With your lack of understanding in the mirror match up, I highly doubt your Jace(s) would do much.

Jace is a good card, can be used effictively. Just not sure which match ups to use him in but as Holy Llama said using him in the Mirror is a waste of a card.

    Quote from mandelbrot
Combo isn't fun. Have you ever played Type 1? It's as non interactive as it gets. I would have been really proud if I had discovered a game breaking combo, but in this day and age, with netdecking rampant, you don't get to discover anything; someone else has already done it for you.

Now think how boring it is to play an unbeatable combo deck with your friends. You play it once or twice and you win. The opponent has no answer. Would you play it again? You'd be as bored as he is.

Now think if an all winning combo deck hits tournaments. We would have two decks: the combo deck and decks designed to beat the combo deck. Not very interesting, is it?

Combos are nice as a novelty: "Look what I've discovered". But playing it more than once, or far worse being dominant in competitive play is bad for the game.

But kudos to anyone who discovers a sick combo, in a combo hating environment, and wins a tournament with it. But it will be boring as hell afterwards.

I don't know about you but I think combo is fun to play with/against. And I think it is more interactive than Aggro is in the current standard. Hell, splinter twin was more interactive with my U/B control than RDW/Goblins.

Couldn't agree with Morimacil's post more.

Would you care to explain this? Just stating this without reasoning doesn't help others. Perhaps it would be better in their particular build. I agree ponder is no Preordain, but as a digging spell, it's worthy of consideration and not to be dismissed out of hand

Did you not read the rest of my post in which I explained it? The idea of U/B control is to 1 for 1 your opponent as efficiently as possible whilst having superior card draw. With this you will inevitably come to a win when your opponent is drained of answers. Ponder does nothing to help this.
Also Preordain wasn't used as a digging spell in U/B because we don't have any combo pieces, it was used to filter through the deck and putting the cards you do NOT need at the bottom of your deck never to be seen. Ponder simply doesn't do this.

4 Leak, 4 Dissipate and 2 Negate with another Negate in the sideboard. Rest of the list is standard removal. Creatures are 4x Snapcaster and usually 3/4 fatties which are usually 1 grave, rest sphinx's. I've just preferred to build very permission heavy.

    Quote from TylerDC
I really don't see a reason to run more than 3. It can be too dead of a card and lead to a blowout. Too many decks are siding in SE and spellbomb. Most people who side in nihil and SE (that can't get full value out of spellbomb) are doing a very sub-optimal strategy, but by you putting yourself in a situation where your rely more on snapcaster, then you're making their sideboard cards a lot better VS you.

when tweaking/personalizing a deck, i usually make a solid 65, and then shave 5, looking for what i want the deck to do. yes, snapcaster is a double spell... but most of the time, you just want a snapcaster to be a mana leak or a dissipate, or another removal. if you're already running a lot of removal, make your 4th snapcaster a counter. if you're running a lot of counters, make your 4th snapcaster a removal.

Bascially I'm babbling on, but what I'm trying to say, is when you run too many snapcaster in this style deck, snapcaster is rarely another spell in the graveyard, a lot of times, it's just a snapcaster, with the wrong spell in the graveyard. Snapcaster is an amazing card late in the game when your yard is stalked full of options and you have plenty of land to exploit that. if you're worried about drawing a snapcaster turns 1-5, then you're doing it wrong.

I kind of agree with you and to be fair I don't think it would hurt my deck if I scaled back to 3 snapcasters. But I love that card especially with the now 10 Counters I run main board. Although I guess the 'right' number of snapcasters depends on the amount of instants you run and your play style.
