I believe this art hints that the creator of Plants v Zombies may have created a zombie card as well. Of course, he could just be referencing his game with the bottom right corner. But I have a suspicion that there is going to be a cool zombie rare to oppose this fine plant.
I'm still having issues with this being an enchantment. However, I realize that may be what the purple haze in the art descriptions was for all along-- not to suggest that the creature is what you summon, but that the enchantment is actually the spell-form, the essence, of Rag Man. He is a horrifying individual in this context, but it's not the horror the enchantment provides, it's the aura that empowers you. You provide the horror mind spells, and the mist will provide the darkness that is twisted and summoned from it.
The art description was off, but Stewart definitely saved it. It could easily have been mistaken for more Golgari-esque stuff, and he didn't, and for that I thank him.
Have you ever noticed how Rag Man even has synergy with this spell? You're guaranteed to get a zombie, and you have a good chance of said discard not being the worst card in their hand. It's an outdated card, but again, it proves that this enchantment is not about summoning Rag Man, but by copying a curse he has that powers his dark magic. He is a great figure for such magic, as he is able to take advantage of it. But if you do your part, provide the mind magic, then you, too, can take advantage of the buff from Rag Man.
That said, sketch two is my pick. It makes Rag Man seem inhuman, and that mystery is the perfect fear to feed on. Unlike the others, you see his pack and are dumbfounded by how anyone could carry it. Without revealing his face, he is an enigma, a dark figure with shadowy intentions, and that's a great image to aspire to.
Brilliantly put. I could not have said it better myself, I fully agree.
As an artist I am very finicky when it comes to the art. C is honestly by far the worst. The pose is overdone and without that view of the background it feels obnoxiously centered on senor Rag Man here. His arm pose is so awkward too... Just his whole pose overall doesn't feel like it makes any sense. It's overly-dramatic and silly, quite honestly. A is beautiful art for a creature, the pose is nice and it has a cool atmosphere... But it is sooo focused on the Rag Man that it still feels like a creature, but it is the best art at first glance. However, B is clearly a creepy feeling enchantment and fits the feel of the card infinitely more than the other two. And the whole composition is amazing.... There is no competition. B, not the best at first glance, but it's the clear winner in the end.
I really wish they had gone with the Halloween art on this though... When I get this for my commander deck I may just do an alter fitting that art description.
