I'd rather let sleeping dogs lie where the BAAC thing is concerned. Selfishly, of course, becuase I want to keep playing with friends who have amazing decks build around Grand Arbiter AUgustin, Braya, Derevi, etc. We just deal with it. The less policing the RC does, the better. Stuff should only be banned if it's OMGBBQ! levels of crazy, like Griselbrand, Emrakul, etc. or plays badly with format like Fastbond or Limited Resources.

There isn't a hell of a lot I'd like to see get the axe right now, though Food Chain is dangerously silly. But meh. Test unbans would be cool though. Library of Alexandria maybe? Grin Remember, can't really have it and Academy on the same banned list. #Warble

As silly as Food Chain is, it's also oddly enough a card that can do surprisingly fair things in decks that just want to play consecutively bigger stuff. You do need to build around it to abuse it - whether it's with Prossh or the Misthollow/Scourge twins - at which point it starts to fall firmly into the "Spikes gonna Spike" territory. Same kind of reasoning for Hermit Druid and such, I'd think.

A pretty good card as far as hand disruption goes. 3 mana everyone discards one and you get a body to go with it - one that can be clamped and flies - is not bad. Of course, the discard not being random and reanimator being quite a thing in EDH does hold it back.

Before the commander products I'd have agreed about Sol Ring, but they are never going to ban a $2 card that many players have multiple copies of, and that you are basically guaranteed to have access to if you buy a precon. Its about as noob accessible as a card can be, simply because it gets constant reprints in products designed to be an introduction to the format.

Huh. I guess everyone is required to pay $35+ for a precon to get into the format now... Sigh... Well, it was fun while it lasted.

I don't think that the RC is likely to ban Sol Ring, unfortunately, but I don't agree that the card is "about as noob accessible as a card can be." Heck, there's plenty of players out there who play EDH with whatever Standard-legal cards they opened in packs.

Or, you know, they pay $2 to any random vendor for their Sol Ring. It's stupidly easy to come accross nowadays.

Anyway, the RC has stated they're not likely to use the Barrier to Entry criterium anymore. But do keep in mind that those cards that ARE banned for that reason, when unbanned, are likely to shoot up to 4x what they are worth now because they'd be good for a LOT of EDH decks. As of now, most of those cards can only be played as a 1-off in Vintage. Add them to the EDH pool which has a lot more players than Vintage and hoo lawdy...

As noted above, the mana base can be as expensive as you want it to be. I've ran 5-colour-mana-bases that were like 10 bucks in total and still worked. Sure, if you want to go hardcore competitive then you'll want fetches, original duals and shocks, but if you intend to stay casual then there's no need for those. Just pick up lands as you progress.
Now, while she lacks green, Bruna, Light of Alabaster is also a very reasonable option. With the various drawpower and tutors available in Blue/White, it's easy for her to become an invincible murder machine. There's plenty of options, it's just that there's no real good Bant aura legend, this is truth.

posted a message on Deadeye Navigator
Deadeye Navigator is at it's cheapest 5UUU: Blink a creature. And that alone makes it not banworthy to me. People tend to focus on the 1U: Blink a creature, but it still has a rather steep initial cost. To really make it worthwhile, you have to pump 12 mana into it in my experience - and that's not even counting the cost of whatever creature you're going to soulbond with it. In my personal opinion, if you get to make that much use of Deadeye, perhaps you're already at a stage in the game where it's about time someone wins.
As for the "New players do not grasp the way the triggers work" argument - isn't this something the more experienced players should teach them? Every time I've seen this happen with Player A Deadeyeing and player B mis-timing his removal, players C and D usually were quick enough to point out how those triggers stacked - and oftentimes player A was helpful enough too. Quite frankly if someone takes advantage of such a little hole in a player's knowledge of the game, that's rather scummy and is NOT the metric a ban should be measured at.
As a result, I just don't think it fits the "Creates undesireable board states" metric. It takes a fair bit of effort for it to do so. It's literally useless on it's own, it usually requires something to at least survive a turn before it becomes dangerous, it's sorcery speed...and yes I know you can all speed that up, but at that point we're talking about a multitude of cards combining to create such a state. Deadeye is in that case not the cause, but rather the most "obvious" target.
Which leaves you with casual omnipresence. While something could be said for this, I do think that it's not as bad anymore. EDHRec lists Deadeye as being in roughly 8.5K decks. Seems like a lot? Here are a few other cards around that level or around Deadeye's slot in a deck:
    Mulldrifter (8.6K)
    Terastodon (9.1K)
    Consecrated Sphinx (8.1K)
    Clever Impersonator (9.4K)
    Rune-Scarred Demon (8.9K)
    Sheoldred, Whispering One (10.2K)
    Sun Titan (19K)
    Avenger of Zendikar (13.8K)

That in mind, can you really go as far as saying Deadeye is omnipresent? As far as BLUE creatures go it's one of the best but truth be told, Blue doesn't have that many great creatures anyway and it's generally not mono-blue it's found in unless in concert with the likes of Palinchron - in which case I'd go as far as calling Palinchron the problematic card.
In fact, when you look at a list of "Staples" Per colour - Deadeye doesn't appear in Mono Blue, Dimir, Izzet, Simic, Esper, Grixis, Jeskai and all 4/5 colour lists - And it's listed as being in 20% of Azorius, 29% of Bant, 21% of Sultai and 34% of the Temur decks.
    Not so omnipresent.

posted a message on Where to buy cards in Europe?
If you're buying on MKM, you should make a list of the cards you want in My Wants. You then get a full list of the vendors that do have as many of your cards as possible, with the cheapest with the most cards of your wants listed on top. You can then also use the wizard to get the Total Cheapest buy disregarding shipping if you so want, but going through My Wants and just making a list there tends to be the best way to go.

Hah, started typing, got a phonecall, come back, and find someone else typed the same thing as I finished my post.

The committee bans based on knee-jerk reactions to whatever gives them the feelbads during their irl games and the howling of the loudest scrubs that spam them with messages over the internet, and chalk it up to a nebulous and undefinable concept called 'the spirit of EDH' and the supremely subjective 'fun'. The vast majority of players I've encountered think the banlist is a hilarious farce and that the format would be healthier if WotC took over so we would get some reason and consistency. Yes, they think this even in light of WotC's embarrassing mismanagement of Modern, the list is that bad. From the spikiest spike to the scrubiest scrub, everyone has beef with the EDH banlist and their concerns are always dismissed with the ever-frustrating and completely unreasonable suggestion to house-rule.

Good luck getting them to do anything that makes a lick of sense OP, especially unban your pet card :p

(and yet we still love the format anyways...)

I totally agree with you. However, may I know why using house rule is unreasonable? No doubt they still use this house rule as a blanket statement to anybody who disagree with their ban list.

House rules work in stale groups that don't get any new blood. There are major feelbads for groups with constant new blood though when someone strolls up with their perfectly format-legal list and gets told "Oh you can't play X Y and Z here". Tends to be very much a negative factor for the growth of the game.
Now, house unbans are a bit easier; you can simply tell new players "BTW we have unbanned X Y and Z" and at least their deck won't be considered "illegal" by the local group. Getting a majority of your group to agree on a house unban however can be...trying.

Why is that a different can of worms? Surely if you're in favor of BaaC, you should be in favor of BaaNC. Lots of lists!

Now you're just exaggerating and you know it. I personally think Emrakul WOULD be fine in the command zone but I'm also sure that that would be a hotly contended idea.
I'm not in favor of "Lots and lots" of lists. I am, however, in favor of giving a few small tools that help in balancing the format without immediately going for the harshest way. A scalpel instead of a hatchet, so to say. So that people who love Derevi, Braids, Leovold or Erayo can still play those cards without them being fully axed from the format. And I seriously think that the text "The following cards cannot be used as your commander, but they are perfectly fine in the 99" isn't exactly hard to grok as an addendum to the banlist. Everyone who looks up the banlist is invested enough to read the entire thing, and everyone who is that far into it will have no difficulties getting that difference.

Reading back on that sentence it might seem a bit...odd, but yeah English isn't my native language, so forgive me if my prose isn't as easy on the eyes.

    Quote from cryogen »
Honest question to everyone: how many times did you run into a player who had a banned card in their deck or told someone a BaaC card in a deck was banned and had to be explained about the BaaC list? I know I have encountered this a handful of times in my few playgroups, and I would imagine that most people who play at an LGS have at least once. So there were and will continue to be a portion of players who don't full grasp the rules and ban list before they start playing (you can further see this by the number of times a new player will start a thread to ask a basic question like general damage, command tax, etc). And sure, explaining the rules just once should be sufficient to these players, but what Papa Funk is saying (unless I'm mistaken) is that by eliminating these rules like tuck, BaaC, or off-color mana production, you make the format more grokable, which makes the format better from a design standpoint.

No, I've never had that issue. Because as noted above, everyone who looked at the banlist will have seen that little bit of the BaaC, which shows they know. The only banlist related things I've had was oddly enough with people well invested in the game who had missed an update or two. (Emrakul being played a few weeks after its banning, same with Prophet of Kruphix, and someone else called me out on using Kokusho at one point and had missed the unban memo)
A new player at my LGS at least gets pointed to the banlist. And on the banlist, you could've always seen which cards were banned as a commander. Its 5 seconds of reading work.

Oooh, one of the 5 Granddaddies of the format. Of the 5, Nicol Bolas is obviously the best one, but Vaevectis might actually be the most lethal one of the bunch. He is in the colours of big mana, which means it becomes surprisingly easy to one or two-shot opponents. Of course, it's still a hefty cost to pay up front and he lacks trample, but Green does not lack for ways to trample through, and Black and Red are well equipped in the Clear-The-Skies department. Combined with the haste outlets Red offers you on top of that, and you have something deceptively dangerous on your hand. Though, of course, this is mostly for casual tables.
Oh and you do of course get style points for playing an original Elder Dragon.

I just believe bringing back BaaC also gives a better tool in the case of oppressive generals. Aside from Rofellos and Griselbrand, I cannot think of any legendary creatures right now who are a problem both in the command zone and in the 99. (Emrakul would be fine as commander, IMO. But that's a different can of worms.) Braids and Erayo offer certain decks an interesting tool without being oppressive on their own. Meanwhile Leovold and Derevi are absolutely miserable in the command zone, but in the 99 they're perfectly fine.
So I think that removing the BaaC list actually took away a great tool in dealing with some issues, all for a slightly easier banlist. Anybody who laid their eyes on the original banlist, with the extra bit of "By the way, these cards are not allowed as a commander but feel free to run them in your deck" understood exactly what that meant.

posted a message on How big would a "let's play for fun" aka more exhaustive banlist actually be?
My list would simply be the current list with a few changes:

Reinstate the Banned as a Commander list.
Braids, Cabal Minion, Erayo, Soratami Ascendant and Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary are allowed in the 99 again. Griselbrand and Emrakul, the Aeons Thorn stay banned. Derevi, Empyrial Tactician and Leovold, Emissary of Trest go onto the BaaC list.
Painter's Servant, Protean Hulk, Recurring Nightmare and Gifts Ungiven get released from the banlist.
Iona, Shield of Emeria goes onto the banlist.

Yeah, I don't think many cards need to be banned. There are some cards that I wouldn't shed a tear for if they do hit the list (Such as Craterhoof Behemoth) but plenty of people do consider it to be fun. I think that with my changes, more crazy combinations are possible and everyone can play the decks they like. There's no need to ban everything some people deem to be "unfun", just cards that consistently cause bad feelings every time they are played. There's plenty of folks who enjoy the kind of challenge a card like Smokestack presents.

Much worse Eternal Witness and nobody plays that jank 1/10.

Seriously though, Skullwinder may be a worse Eternal Witness but even a worse Eternal Witness is a good card. It's a political tool, in combat it's much better as it can serve as a pretty good deterrent to grounded attackers, so it has a few points over Witness. On the other hand, the political tool bit may backfire pretty badly, and Witness plays very nice with Skullclamp which this snek doesn't. Oh, and do note that nowhere on the card does it state that the opponent you choose actually has to have cards in the graveyard, so you can play around with that. And it has cool art.
All in all I enjoy this snek, but I often find myself lacking for space whenever I think of including him.

How many targets do you think Thalia's Lancers should have to be worth considering? I'm toying around with the idea of sliding it into my Selvala, Explorer Returned build which has a sizeable selection of targets (See list below) but also runs some tutors as is - namely Worldly Tutor, Eladamri's Call, Congregration at Dawn, Tooth and Nail and Altar of Bone. When does it become too much?
This is the list of potentional targets:

The whole deck is based on powering out Selvala and then start dropping fat, so getting to the mana cost is never the issue. The question I have in general is would Thalia's Lancers be versatile enough in this build?
And beyond my personal question, this thread can easily be for other people who are wondering if they have enough targets as well, or the kind of targets required for it to shine.

One of those odd cards that isn't all that bad. It's a repeatable sac outlet and until quite recently I saw Miren, the Moaning Well get plenty of play. This doesn't require you to dedicate a land drop to it, can save your stuff from exile/theft pretty nicely and shore up your life total. Of course it is still 3 mana each time you want to use it, but as far as repeatable sac outlets go, you could do worse.

But 0 Path to Exile and 1 Inquisition of Kozilek did strike me as odd.
Ah well, in the end, it's fun cracking packs of this set, and more importantly it increases the distribution of various previously-hard-to-get cards. You should never buy a box with the intent of getting all your cash back, no matter how loaded a set is.

One of the fastest-errata'd cards ever (Due to a simple error; the text X can't be 0 was omitted), Marath is as far as general use Naya generals go probably the strongest/most versatile. Yes, some of the others do a specific strategy really well, but Marath just does more. Pinging, buffing or sprouting tokens, Jittemoose can do it all.
That said I never built the deck myself. Probably because I fear that I already know exactly how the deck will end up looking and what it'll play like and it's just not my playstyle.

T1: Land, Mana Crypt, Seething Song, Treasonous Ogre, Manamorphose, Tooth and Nail.

What were we trying to prove here again? That god hands can do things?

Just like Mind over Matter, Doomsday, Laboratory Maniac, etc there are cards that exist just to combo. Fastbond has the additional ability to function "fairly" which seems to be the saving grace of many cards that should probably be banned.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. The thing with MoM, Doomsday and LabMan is that someone who slips those cards into their decks knows damn well what they're doing - they're in there to win, and win they will.
Now, a card like Fastbond could be included in Casual Timmy McNewbieson's deck with the intent of "Oh cool I get some fast ramp out of it." and that's all fun and good until Timmy McNewbieson proceeds to think "Hey, this works nicely with land recursion...or future sight effects..." and before too long the deck explodes.
It's that kind of "It has casual uses but is too easily turned degenerate without even trying" that tends to be the truly scary cards in EDH, as they can turn even the most casual of playgroups upsidedown. In that same playgroup though you might still find LabMan in, say, a Prime Speaker Zegana + Fatties deck. But at least at that point it wasn't included to do fair and honest stuff with it, it was included to win, even if it won't win as easily as it would in a dedicated Labman combowombo deck. Which is, one could argue, a fair use.

Supermenace! With it's ability, if you want to block it it'll be a 6/7 trample at the least, so chances are it'll be a nice trade.
However, would you play a 6/7 trample for 5 in anything that isn't Xenagod?

Like my arguments on Tolarian Academy, to get more busted than a T1 Burgeoning, it will take a very specific hand and draw to be so problematic to cause the T2/T3 wins that everyone fears. Is it possible? Yes, but so is a T2 Blightsteel Colossus with a good hand.
Specific hand? Crucible of Worlds + Fastbond and any fetchland isn't exactly a rare combination. Fastbond + Courser of Kruphix can easily net an absurd number of lands. Heaven forbid you combine Courser with Crucible and a fetchland, you get to pull every land out of your deck.

Fastbond is not an okay card. There is no reason for it to be legal.
I think the good counter-argument is there are notable cards, such as Triskelion, that go nuts/infinite with one other card. The fact the situation you outlined is 3 cards makes it a little less egregious to me. But would I desire to sit down and experience that? Not really, but I already have to deal with those type of situations.

I get the logic that 'Fast Mana' is bad and undesirable, but the situation is not even remotely close to being addressed/rectified. Until then, I'd much rather have the situation be potentially terrible so that action is taken accordingly.

Triskelion is on its own not particularly good. Fastbond, however, is. That's a big deal.

Debt to the Deathless will do more damage than Exsanguinate will. With the Amulet of Vigor mentioned above, things should work out perfectly fine. Even without it, you'll only need to sac 22 lands (And get WW from somewhere) to get lethal on anyone who hasn't gained life.

Protean Hulk is a card that people will continue to talk about and we'll continue to discuss as well. LouCypher makes reasonable points. It's definitely not a black-and-white card like others on the list. As far as mention my local groups, I'm aware that they're not a stand-in for everyone's experience. There is no such thing as a "world" metagame, and anyone who thinks I'm suggesting my local environment reflects such a thing either hasn't been paying attention or is being willfully argumentative.

Well that's kind of the thing here; most of the arguments you give - and indeed, the article you wrote on it back in summer '16 - used your group as the starting point. Which is why I in turn wonder about a few specifics about the table, especially the state of it which urged you to clone the Hulk and not something more immediately threatening/effective. It also causes people to pull back towards the argument of you seeing your group as representative - perhaps it's in the way your articles are worded. Your perception is that many groups will abuse it, my perception is that usually most abuse tends to have better targets to find. (This is, of course, the whole Other Players On The Table Abuse It part, discounting the Player With Hulk In Deck abuses it)
In the end, the reason I argue in its favor so often is for a large part due to the odd inconsistency versus Tooth and Nail which, again in my perception, ruins a lot more casual games. Your rebuttal tends to be that it sees a lot less abuse - and indeed, opponents have a lot harder time to abuse it. Mostly it doesnt matter as it's game over anyway.
But in the end, PHulk just doesn't have that same "Must Abuse/Copy/Clone NOW" sign hovering above it as it used to do, in parts due to the uptick in exile removal and GY hate - same reason Kokusho right now is a good-but-far-from-broken card.

I run a Rakdos dragon tribal deck. It uses Olivia, Mobilized for War to discard dragons to give my other dragons haste and then reanimate those dragons, and it has Dragonstorm, Rise of the Dark Realms and Balthor the Defiled as lategame haymakers. Black's Big Mana cards plus the revival shortcuts (And Sneak Attack!) are enough to ensure I rarely, if ever, get manascrewed.
However, do keep in mind with dragons that they don't have a lot of utility. Dragons as a tribe are viable, yes, but they're not as competitive as, say, Elves or Goblins are. In a more casual meta, they're good enough to keep things under control and smash face and they'll take some games, but in higher tier play, fuggedaboutit.

Thing is Sheldon, I read your report on Protean Hulk's last test (From your 2016 article) and I still didn't see where Hulk was the real issue. You talk about cloning Hulk but the relevant piece of info needed here is; what else was on the table that could've possibly be cloned that you chose to ignore?
I'm just not seeing it. In any deck that cannot immediately sacrifice him, cloning Hulk is merely a good play to protect you from an incoming boardwipe. And that it does pretty well, yet even then, would you choose cloning it over, say, a Rune-Scarred Demon? Because that's what I keep running into. Whenever clones/enemy reanimation are a factor, I keep wondering "Why pick Hulk over many more-immediate impact creatures".
I feel that in that way, it's not all that different from Kokusho. A Chainer deck for example still has a field day with enemy Kokushos, and would do the same with enemy Hulks. A clone-heavy deck would feel much the same. However, in both cases, the Kokusho (Or the Gray Merchant) seems to be more urgent a threat as Protean Hulk will ever be.
And a lot of metas have ramped up on the grave hate too. Between Bojuka Bog, Nihil Spellbomb, Relic of Progenitus, Tormod's Crypt, Angel of Finality and many others, graves are far from sacred these days. This already helped in freeing Kokusho. It's time it also applied to Hulk.

This is honestly not a bad card, but I think it's just black mana too expensive to be actually GOOD. 3B Draw 3 Lose 3 Life is not a bad position to be in, 3BB is just a smidgeon too expensive oftentimes. However, this card can function both as early-game drawpower and a late-game finisher, so I wouldn't call it a bad inclusion by any means, just, you know, not as good as I'd want it to be.

Yeah I was initially going to cut the "Exile 15 cards each turn" down to 7 or 3 to where it's not nearly as broken to put it on par with Jester's Cap and Denying Wind while adding more restrictions to the upkeep trigger. If you have a better card creation based on the principles I was trying to put forth feel free to let me know.

De Gama, the King Maker red mana green mana white mana blue mana
    Legendary Creature - Human Soldier
    Hexproof
When De Gama, the King Maker enters the battlefield and you cast it from your command zone, you may search target player's library for up to 3 cards and exile them face-down. That player shuffles their library afterwards.
    Opponents cannot search their libraries.
If an opponent would begin an extra turn, that player skips that turn instead.
    2/8

This way, you can still take the main combos of one player out of comission while preventing tutoring for more combos from the rest. By making it a cast-and-enter-from-command-zone ability you prevent excessive abuseability (By, say, blinking it). You still get a powerful effect this way.

If an opponent would search a library, that player searches the top four cards of his or her library instead.
    2/8
    Please no.

It would take 20 minutes to resolve your first upkeep after he hits the table. With paradox haze the game is over if you hit even one upkeep, with you removing every threat from everyone's deck. Assuming a standard deck of 10 ramp, 10 draw spells, 10 removal spells, 30 threats, and 40 lands, you could strip each player at the table of their entire pool of threats and then the game is over.

The abilities also don't make sense together.
The goal I had in mind was to try to create a Commander that punishes players for running infinite combos while also locking their ability to grab combo pieces in the process when it doesn't help that the design process that goes into Commander Sets encourages the use of those infinite combos more so than trying to print answers to help combat against them when there are so few to choose from based on what we currently have in the game's entire card pool.

She's not awful, but, I haven't ever seen her shine. That said, the 4 CMC slot is not exactly rife with great choices; Angel of Finality, Seht's Tiger and Windborn Muse are playable, but other creatures are really niche or not really up to snuff (IMO, I'm definitely open to hearing about overlooked CMC 4 creatures in white).

Restoration Angel and Felidar Guardian are things. Sublime Archangel for certain strategies, Academy Rector, Angel of Jubilation, Archangel of Tithes, Emeria Angel, False Prophet, and there's probably more. Plenty of choice, as far as I'm concerned.

I kinda like the lieutenant mechanic and wish they made some more cards with it. While none of the lieutenants are truly amazing cards, they're all at least decent, and this one does provide a nice boon to your army. Sadly, she doesn't anthem your field, she's essentially a 5/5 flier who grants your team vigilance if your commander is out, and a 3/3 flier without any abilities when not. Not a bad deal at 4 mana, but a bit too reliant on your commander sticking around to really work.

It does depend on what you need more; a strong turn 3 or a strong turn 1 and turn 4. If your deck has a lot of value on the 4-drop slot, the Farmhand is going to be worth more for your deck. If constant reanimation is a consideration the Elk becomes better. But yeah, the curve is a thing to keep in mind. A commander at CMC 4 will always prefer the Farmhand.

Aggro does seem like the most interesting option. You can run a few of the angels that have human-specific interactions, flavorfully they'd fall under "Karona-sent shepherds of the human race" so it works, with both Sigarda 2.0 and Angelic Overseer as interesting options.
From there on just cherrypick the humans with the best effects. Don't forget some tokens and Kessig Malcontents!

Rift is the 2nd most played card in commander, according to the EDHREC data, behind only Sol Ring.

Looking at a different card, Cyclonic Rift is the most-played card across all decks with blue, at 50%. It's also the colored card with the highest penetration for its possible decks. While the data alone can't tell us this, we know context around these cards: Cyclonic Rift is different from Sol Ring. At many points in a game, Sol Ring is a marginal—or even dead—draw. Cyclonic Rift isn't. If you're ahead or behind, Sol Ring likely isn't the difference maker for getting back into the game or putting it away for good. Cyclonic Rift is often backbreaking to opponents at parity, and is one of the few ways to come back from a losing position.

I think you misunderstood that list; it says in how big a percentage of the amount of decks that can play that card is that card played. While Cyclonic Rift makes over 50% of the decks it can be played in, this does NOT mean it is the second most played card; given how often Green appears in the higher ends I would dare bet that Eternal Witness sees more play even if it appears in a lower amount of green decks. But more importantly, it also means a pile of artifacts that can go in every deck is likely to appear above Cyclonic Rift, most notably Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves and Solemn Simulacrum.

posted a message on Need help choosing a commander for a "Vampire Tribal" Deck
Generally, the downside of Olivia is that when she gets cloned, you can say bye-bye to your army. So I would avoid her.
May I suggest Olivia, Mobilized for War instead? She may not offer you any tribal synergies but she does enable you to throw out slightly bigger vampires (Which in some cases jumpstarts them into growing even bigger) and you still get access to Red's suite of vampires, in particular Falkenrath Gorger which when combined with Olivia's ability can cascade pretty nicely.
In this kind of build, you can still lay your focus on Black - which has the most good vampires - and simply cherrypick the red vampires you want, along with a few goodstuffy cards. This gives you more flexibility than either Drana or Anowon would - though you can still include the both of them as they go well with Olivia's general gameplan. The issue with Drana is that fast aggro generals that do nothing but attack indeed tend to get mowed down easily - and she doesn't offer immediate benefits to your creatures - while Anowon aside from limiting your creature options tends to be disliked by people who don't want to get rid of their stuff. Olivia v2 in turn leaves you with a lot smaller a target, especially if you play it a bit more cautious.

Jalira is a pretty slow general, and especially your proposed strategy isn't going to be particularly fast. If people consider her to be a kick below the belt, then I'd have my doubts about their skill level, honestly. The random nature of her ability and the fact that it needs multiple moving parts to really work on your opponent's stuff should ensure it fits safely in what constitutes fun EDH games.
