Of course that is the nuts. No argument there. My point is that with Copperhorn, you have the ability to use chord on turn 3 and still overrun. My point is that if you assume it replaces nettle sentinel, it extends our reach a bit.

so far, it has surprised me in my testing.

    Hey all,
Just wanted to put my voice in for the Copperhorn Scout. I have been testing him lately and he seems to cut a whole turn off our kills. For instance:

    T1: Copperhorn Scout
T2: dork, heritage druid, tap all three, archdruid
T3: chord for ezuri, untap archdruid, overrun

That is 15 damage on turn 3. I know this is the best case scenario, but no other one drop seems to create that much speed. He generally allows you to chord for ezuri on your turn and activate him the same turn. Shines with Chord.

    EDIT: fixed the math.

If you haven't tested it, try it out in place of Nettle Sentinel. You might be surprised at the results.

My apologies that I don't remember who started this, but there was an attempt to restart the primer a couple months back and this google doc was the result.

Ok, I have seen too many top placements with the straight GW version, so I am officially making the switch for now. Here is my dilemma - I don't have Horizon Canopies, and I won't be able to get them for the foreseeable future. My question is this: if you were going to replace the horizon canopies with fetches and Temple Garden, would you run a 3/1 fetch/shock split or a 2/2 split?

Here is hoping that Horizon Canopy gets reprinted soon Smile

Great idea. Just added some suggestions. If folks can do some work on a sideboarding section, as well as talk about the Nettle Sentinel debate, that would be great.

I'm having a major problem trying to beat some titan scapeshift decks. What cards are good sideboard against these decks. Thx!

I have had luck with Thoughtseize and Stain the Mind.

GW Chord Elves finished at 8th place in the Dalton StarCity Games Invitational Qualifier: http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=100909. Interestingly enough it ran 4 Nykthos, no Canopies, and 20 lands.

Seems like a budget thing. There was only one white sideboard card, so why not play shaman? I guess I have never tried it, but can't imagine how, unless you are running all the white hate cards, this would be better than green/black.

@Syreal, I am curious about the Illness in the Ranks. Are you worried about the sword combo? I haven't tested against it, but it would seem as though we would trample right over that. I think I would run another Choke instead...

I like the warcallers as well, but I don't necessarily want a playset of them. I like the 3/2 Nettle/Warcaller split in the deck above and will be trying that out this week.

I'm moving to the Chord-less/Nettle-less version. We're going to need resiliency more than speed now. My testing is limited but my buddy has a UWR Control and Pox deck I play against and Lead has won me many games. Chord was always dead in my hand. Against control Lead essentially gives us mad card advantage. I like the idea of 3 Fracturing Gusts too.

Edit: I'll also add that Cavern seems like a no-brainer now. It's still out of my budget though.

I think that Nettle might actually be better in the lead version, so I am going to try that out (see the decklist that was just posted). When you are casting creatures instead of chording for them, then the elfstorm capability becomes more relevant. I actually think that the rise of blue decks is good for us if we move to a more resilient build with card advantage at the core of the deck.

Sideboarding is my biggest challenge, because we lose the silver bullets, but maybe we can start to focus on more overall good threats like discard spells and the like.

my sideboard needs some work but honestly against infect the plan is to win the flip and out race. I think chord might be playing it too safe. Modern is a format where you literally can't have a great match-up against everyone. If infect is a big part of your meta, sure sideboard to face it, but locally for me and so far online I have seen almost zero infect. As far as the extra mana elf I still want it and would put a 4th nettle back in before throwing in another 3 drop, every hand that has no 1 drop is most likely a mulligan. (only time it's ok is against known opponent playing jund or 8-rack if you have multiple leads and at least 2 land.

Also I have noticed I have kept playing a rec sage in paper mainboard even with no chords, it feels wrong but has been fine. Not sure how others feel. I guess game 1 we just want to be fast and not worry about affinity or boggles. Something I'll most likely switch out before I play it next time.

Also any interest in me doing mtgo videos with elves? I know tcg requiem was doing it for a while, didn't know if it was something people want more of.

Yes, I would be interested in watching that. Please let me know where I can follow on twitch or subscribe on YouTube.

Have been doing really well on MTGO tourney practice with this version. I just got into mtgo so I cut corners not getting full playsets of canopy and cavern but hasn't really been too bad. I don't know if we really need chords in the side anymore. I choose not to get them to save some money.

I like this list. A lot. Especially if eldrazi gets nuked and we need to go back to a card advantage engine because there are more sweepers. I still like the one eternal witness though, so I would consider running that instead of the elves of deep shadow.

My question - I hesitate to give up the silver bullets in the sideboard. What is your plan with this deck against infect for instance? They tend to be a turn faster, and in my experience, 3 dismember is not generally enough. But maybe with the extra finishers, we can keep up with their clock assuming we draw at least one piece of interaction.

Also, I tend to have some combo at my LGS, so I am going to continue to run thoughtsieze and stain the mind. Both of those can be backbreaking to scapeshift, ad nauseam, etc.

Thanks fairport for this list - much appreciated!

cool card. I wasn't playing during that time, so didn't know it existed.

I can see best case scenario you chord for this at the end of the turn (or maybe in response to a draw spell) and then search up something on your draw step, but unless you were going to win right there, then it lets our opponent just search up their sweeper and kill us. And if we are going to win, then we might as well just chord for SoTP or Ezuri.

Seems too risky for me, and I can't see what I would want to board it in against.

Just noticed that a deck placed 14th at the SCG Classic over the weekend with 0 Collected Company.

    http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=99991

I will let that sink in.

Yeah, I felt the shock as well. I have never considered dropping that card as it seems to be the biggest business spell that we have. Does anyone know Derek Kauffman and can encourage him to post about his choices and experience with this tournament?
