If you're flickering stuff AND looking to hit ink-treader with funny spells, then you should use Izzet Chronarch, Mnemonic Wall, and Archeomancer.

    Electrolyze would probably be funny.

I had an amusing Ghostway + Izzet Chronarch + Restoration Angel + Cyclonic Rift soft lock on board the other day.

I say amusing, but none of the other players were amused. Not when I also had mindclaw shaman and mnemonic wall in play.

Now you just need to start a rigged 9 player game, cast eye of the storm followed by primal surge, then have each other player have a sky swallower in their deck.

One guy tried to convince me that Phyrexian Revokers effect remained until the end of the game, not just until it left the battlefield. I was playing an RG ramp aggro deck, and he named Primeval Titan. I said "OK", smirking to myself because I knew that Prime's ability was triggered, not activated. When I attacked the next turn, I began to tutor the lands and he asked what I was doing. I explained, in excruciating detail, the difference between activated and triggered abilities. He was not happy.

The next game, he dropped one and named Birds of Paradise. Now, I had a bit of a problem, but since the Birds did not have summoning sickness, I quickly tapped the chicken on the field and pulled out a Lightning Bolt to fry his Revoker.

Now he thinks he is smirking. He asked why I would do that, because it didn't matter. He said nothing on the card said that the effect ended when the creature left the battlefield.

I said, with a completely straight face, "If that is the case, Platinum Angel is the BEST CARD EVER!"

He finally understood what I was getting at at that point.

If he named birds of paradise already it'd be too late to tap.
Of course, if he cast it and immediately said birds of paradise without waiting for it to resolve, that's a different matter.

The Casual/EDH promos only come out once every four months, 3/4 of the FNM promos are meant for standard players, please stop complaining that the last 1/4 is not playable in standard.

And anyway, it's not like it's totally unplayed in standard.

  • posted a message on [[RTR]] TCG Player spoiler Detention Sphere
To explain why it doesn't allow exiling other detention spheres, you simply need to imagine what would happen if you did.

Imagine one detention sphere in play, you then play another detention sphere, targetting the first with the ability, both leave play, then the second trigger brings them back.

Now, two triggers go on the stack, you target one of your opponent's permanents with the first one, and you target a detention sphere with the second. The second resolves first, repeating the loop, except with a trigger to exile something of your opponent's permanently at the bottom of the stack.

At any time you can break the loop by choosing to not take up the 'may' trigger, and you exile all your opponent's nonland permanents.

I note that the date on the bottom right on the art seems to be back. I guess they realized that the date was one of the more popular aspects of the promo after all.

Neither the familiar nor slitherhead take up a rare slot in your booster pack do they? Fun or not it's a junk rare. If it was a junk uncommon nobody would care or complain about it. Not to mention your opponent decides on what creatures you get considering you are just taking his. So what does this mean? you run crap creature to take advantage of this card?

Did you even read the card. You don't get each other's creatures.

I'll disagree. It may just be a flavor thing, but the typical "arrest" art tends to be the physical act of arresting, or otherwise binding, a creature. This seems more of an interrogation after the arrest. As well, the job of "arresting" a citizen of Ravnica would tend to be a Boros job, no? Azorious would ideally be the interrogative squad afterward.

The Senate actually does have some ground presence. They even have "arresters", according to the Planeswalker Points Guild Letter.

Maelstrom Wanderer. Not only are their decks all the same, they somehow think they have an interesting deck.

I've seen a few combo deck lists online, but IRL there are FOUR maelstrom wanderer decks and they are all the same save budget.

  • posted a message on Why Are Three Rarities Acceptable, But Four Are Not?
The difference is less conceptual and more of an (pseudo)economics thing, imo.

A mythic is, 1/3rd as common as a rare from the same set.
This means that supply is approximately 1/3rd that of a rare.

The secondary market is intrinsically pegged to booster price: if there are no mythics, if demand of every rare were equal, if information and supply is perfect (each buyer knows where to find sellers, and they are reasonably near enough), the price of each rare would be about $4 today.

Now introduce mythics, now you have a product that has 1/3rd the supply of the rest. Even assuming mythics have an equal power level, and thus demand, as every rare, the price of a mythic would be several times that of a rare. The price of rares would go down slightly, and mythics would be several times that. Something like 3 dollars for a rare and 9 for a mythic.

The problem arises when, after multiplying all the factors, you end up with a mythic's price being more than certain things, like a meal. A mythic is perceived as expensive, and reasonably so, its price is over a certain threshold that starts to trigger the psychological warnings most people have saying: am I spending too much money on a piece of cardboard? It produces a large psychological effect.

Would this be a problem if boosters were $1.33? Probably not.
From another angle, a rare is about 3 times rarer and many, many times cheaper than an uncommon, but because its price is not yet over a certain threshold, it produces no bad will from people.

    1. The complication seems to inhibit transparency, which might make the system feel unfair; although I might be overestimating the value of understanding the system.

    2. If i'm understanding the math right, There is no incentive to not vote 9-0-1 or etc every game other than general goodwill/sportsmanship/honesty, I'm not sure you can trust people with that? Possibly you can enforce that everyone can see what each other is scoring and adjust accordingly- integrity is enforced by the fear of 'retaliation'/shame or whatever you call it.

    3. If i'm assuming right, isn't the league supposed to attract business to the LGS? Wouldn't knowing that the scores are averaged limit the number of games people would play rather than, say, playing elsewhere?

Getting people to rate themselves isn't going to work well if there are prizes at stake. Honest people might rate themselves properly, but anyone with a shred of shrewdness will rate themselves 50.

What about games with less than 5 people? 4-man games are terribly common, if you knock off two of the scores, you only get 2 scores. Do you intend to accept these scores? Three-man games?

If you only take the average score, what's to stop people from playing one very good official game, then refusing to play official league games again?

Note that each 3 loyalty you gain from activation is 3 or.more.life you're not.losing to attackers. If you want to make people not want to attack the throne you can simply scale up the numbers
If the throne gained 1 loyalty per activation and majesty triggered at 6 everyone would want to attack the throne cause its minimal investment to outcome. Meanwhile, if it was +5 counters and 25 to majesty, they might instead decide to go straight for your throat.

By the way you might want to determine if thrones are permanants... beast within etc
