I definitely agree. I've been tinkering with my list a bit more, and I replaced him with solemn simulacrum, although its good on MWS, I want to play this deck at FNM again and I dont have any solemns yet, and I dont know what to substitute in for the time being.

I've been playing tezzeret for about 6 months.
When I played at FNM, I played against Caw blade or UW every round. I was able to win the first matchespretty handily, but they sideboard in like 10 cards and it becomes nearly impossible to win. They say sideboarding is half the battle but all i really side in are duresses and ratchet bombs. When I played it felt like i couldnt land anything, and if i did it was just oblivion ringed or into the roiled. I also felt like i didn't have enough board presence.
I think the new list I put together is a little bit better, but I really just want a really good sideboard plan for caw-blade.

    here is my new list:

Its 61 cards right now. I am thinking of taking out two spell pierces and putting in a Karn for a little late-game comback from Oblivion rings.
I've also had really good luck with Voilition Reins in the past. it seems like a more proactive card because instead of destroying a threat, that threat becomes your threat.

The sideboard, again, is something I'm entirely confused about. I've seen the lists with 3 calcite snappers, and I have no idea what they are used for.

Another thing about this deck is that, yes, its extremely difficult to pilot. At my FNM here in Vegas, I was trying a more reactive approach, so I was waiting on casting spells. I'm not sure if that was good or not, but it definitely didn't work that night. On MWS I take a more aggressive approach, I dont slow down until I have a chalice out because it gives me the momentum I need to mana leak their threats while playing my stuff.

All in all, I believe in this deck, I'd like some tips on sideboarding for caw-blade mostly.
    Thank you.

My deck is exceptionally similar, and look I even run the karn! I play against a couple u/w in my meta and I typically will bring in ratchet and despise but I also bring in life's finale. I think that running a little better threat density helps with beating them. The batterskull is pretty amazing since you can react to o-ring and such. Maybe give that a shot. Like you said, game one you can pretty consistently beat them. Then come the orings outta the sideboard. The last match I had I let him over commit and finale'd then a couple turns latter sun titan plus a lot more nonsense also got finale'd .on flipping through his library I realized that the only cards he had left to win with were gideon animated, colonnade, or ulting a jace. all of which are very manageable. I felt like his threat density just wasn't high enough to deal with finales. Karn is pretty underwhelming. Most of the time, by the time you play him, you are looking for a way to end the game...not restart it. usually he comes out and will exile and exile and that will be it. I figure its a 7 mana exile two permanents. He's fine with a jace out since you can plus jace and then use karn to exile the card they drew. I think if he were another batterskull it might help with consistency. He is just way too silly so I am going to keep running him.

On another note to other builds running 4x sphinx here is something to consider for your builds. I have been keeping the game ending spells artifacts (for the most part) as I think they must be able to be hit by tezz. I hate plusing him looking for an answer and seeing a sphinx and a grave titan or something going to the bottom of the library. I'd rather have a choice in if one goes to my hand or if I don't need it and can drop it in favor of something else. This has just been my personal build choice, although obvious, it took me a while to make this realization.

No it doesnt, The level 2 judge at my qaulifier ruled that the metamorph copies all static effects. It isnt coping the card. It is coping the "Thing". So if you copy a 5/5 Vault Skirge, it comes into play as a 5/5 Vault Skirge not a 1/1. If you copy a 5/5 Batterskull, it comes into play as a Batterskull that can't be equiped......etc, However, if you copy an inkmoth nexus, it does come into play as a 5/5 infect flyer, but it losed the end of turn abilities at the end of turn and retains the 5/5 effect of tezz.

Here is straight from the rules. check out the examples for clarification.

706.2. When copying an object, the copy acquires the copiable values of the original object’s characteristics and, for an object on the stack, choices made when casting or activating it (mode, targets, the value of X, whether it was kicked, how it will affect multiple targets, and so on). The “copiable values” are the values derived from the text printed on the object (that text being name, mana cost, card type, subtype, supertype, expansion symbol, rules text, power, toughness, and/or loyalty), as modified by other copy effects, by “as . . . enters the battlefield” and “as . . . is turned face up” abilities that set characteristics, and by abilities that caused the object to be face down. Other effects (including type-changing and text-changing effects), status, and counters are not copied.

Example: Chimeric Staff is an artifact that reads “{X}: Chimeric Staff becomes an X/X artifact creature until end of turn.” Clone is a creature that reads, “You may have Clone enter the battlefield as a copy of any creature on the battlefield.” After a Staff has become a 5/5 artifact creature, a Clone enters the battlefield as a copy of it. The Clone is an artifact, not a 5/5 artifact creature. (The copy has the Staff’s ability, however, and will become a creature if that ability is activated.)
Example: Clone enters the battlefield as a copy of a face-down Grinning Demon (a creature with morph {2}{B}{B}). The Clone is a colorless 2/2 creature with no name, no types, no abilities, and no mana cost. It will still be face up. Its controller can’t pay {2}{B}{B} to turn it face up.

Hey everyone, here is my new take on the tezz deck. I had tried the U/B Control shell for a while and just wasn't getting good results so I decided to scrap it and try something different. I liked Greg McCleery's Charge! deck that was posted via a link on page 161. I am just so sick of the control shell and this just seemed eniterly different. I took it out to a tournament the other day and went 2-2 beating forgemaster and U/B control but loosing to two caw-blade match ups. I think mostly the losses were caused by inexperience to the match up. A lot of the time I trinket mage'd searching for effigy when I should have gotten surge node. It would really have had a much more devastating effect on the game. I made a couple modifications to the list today and thought I would share it. Almost all the time the problem was running out of gas, so I went ahead and put in gambit to try to get more. Also, proliferating is just really really good in this deck since that is pretty much what you are trying to do to your tumbles, chalices, and bombs. I've been thinking about cutting tec edge altogether but it is just so helpful in the cawblade match up..

my build runs spellskites, i was going to run precursor golem, but i was told if you want to save your golems with spellskite, you have to pay to redirect the copied spells, is it true the spell is immediately copied when they cast it to target precursor?

Yes, you do. but 2 life is a small price to pay!

hi, I am getting back into competitive magic, and Im loving this deck. Does anyone play brittle effigy? Im wondering whether or not I should play it early, or drop it after they play the creature? Im assuming just play it early, it will force my opponent to try playing around it right?

Also, I know this may be overkill or useless, but does sorin markov belong as a 1 of? seems like gg when you use sorin to put your opp to 10 life than ultimate tezzeret. Also seems good vs aggro by gaining life and killing their creatures. thoughts?

Also, what is the use of the throne of geth? is it really that useful?

Yes I play effigy currently in the sideboard. The biggest problem I see is plusing tezz digging for a tumble or something to lock down a creature but often you see all your slags, throats, and blast going to the bottom. to have a removal that is an artifact is very helpful. As for when to play it, it depends. If you play it say turn your opponent will do their best to bait you into using it on something. Most of the time I will hold it back unless they are in a position where they have to play something to win. I like it against tezz and forgemaster decks because when you exile their blightsteel they make this face :-(. Great against wurmcoils and any titans. not very good against cawblade as of now but having colorless removal can help.

as for sorin i run grixis and 3 black symbols cannot reliably be gotten so if you went for the U/B build this might seem more conceivable. You are better running titans in this spot or wurmcoil in my opinion as they cost the same. I have even tried massacre wurm which can be good in certain matchups such as caw, knights, and elves but was underwhelming compared to a grave titan. Its better to have something thats going to straight win the game rather than something that has to combo to win.

I have not tried throne of geth but it just seems like again you are trying to combo to win. I haven't play tested it but I would imagine that its okay if you are trying the infect version of u/b. Not really a fan of this build as it is more aggro and I favor the control/aggro route of grixis. Drawing a throne of geth just seems like I would rather have a removal card or chalice or sun.

Took this to FNM on friday and X-1 (can't remember exactly how many rounds, I just remember a few of them which I will describe.

    Round 1: Vampires
This was not that bad for some reason. I think he got screwed game 1, and I cleaned up game 2 with ratchet bomb and slag storm. I had a BSZ in my hand the whole game which I couldn't cast because I never got double black. Double Inferno Titan got there.

    Round 2 MBPoison?
There may have been a round between these two, but I am not sure. Anyways, the guy had a couple infect myr's and a crusader. The crusader was annoying because I couldn't kill it with red removal, but my golems + magnets held it off, and applied way more pressure. Game 2 was pretty easy as well since he seemed pretty creature light. He had Skitheryx, but I had 2 magnets in play, and he never got 6 mana to give it haste. Active galvanic blast owned the first 1 though which was nice.

Round 3 (I think) Caw blade
This was a long drawn out match. Game one took 35 minutes, and I won. He said he punted it, but I couldn't figure out what he could have done differently. Koth owned him pretty hard for a while, and killed 2 jaces. Tezz also drew me some cards, and he simply couldn't handle Precursor golem which I drew 2 of. Game 2 I mulled to 5, on the draw, and then never drew a planeswalker, and that sucked. Game 3 I made a mistake about 10 minutes in when I had tezz down. I should have just made my chalice a 5/5, but I didn't, and drew a magnet. I watched him shuffle his cards and I knew he had spell pierce, and I didn't have a blocker/magnet to save tezz. I had 4 mana up, and I figured that I would just cast magnet, to draw the pierce, and then blast his guy. The problem was that I forgot that I didn't have 3 artifacts in play, and it wouldn't kill it because it was sworded. So what I should have done was not cast anything since I had 4 mana, activated my inkmoth nexus, block 1 guy, and then blast the other with 2 mana up to pay for the pierce. Instead, I ☺☺☺☺ed myself and totally punted the game. If I had the 5/5 chalice, he couldn't have even attacked with the sworded guy, he would have had to move the sword, and wouldn't have had enough to activate colonade, and I could have just blasted the bird without worrying about it. Anyways, ended up punting that one. I should have thought it through more considering he slow played most of the first game, and a draw/win is obviously better than a loss.

    Round 4+ eldrazi green
Slagstorm into precursor game 1 was pretty amazing. Game 2 I ate an emrakul. And game 3 was a demonstration of what consciousness of game state and life total calculation can do if done right. I had no business winning that game, since I was at 4 life and she was threatening lethal. I was going to use the 2 blasts in my hand to kill 2 of her guys, and then make a 5/5 with tezz to block to prevent death. Instead however, I was able to play jace and find an artifact, play it, blast her twice for 8, tap 3 (tapped 1 at her EOT) of her guys with tumble magnet, attack for 8 (16 total) and then drain for the rest (since I only had 4 artifacts, and she was at 24 because of a baloth which I have no idea why she sided in. She may have just sided out some worse things, and didn't have anything better to put in). Anyways, she was very upset that I was able to do 24 damage in 1 turn when all I had was 5 power on the board, 3 cards in hand, and a soon to be empty pair of tumble magnets.

I think there was another round after this, against caw blade. I remember winning my last round by a lot because my opponent got totally screwed. Anyways, I ended up in second place, and got a pretty lousy prize, but still had a good time. Typical FNM...lol.

I really liked this build and took it out yesterday to a competitive event. I ended up 3-1 and placed for some prize! I like this build way more than anything I've tried so far. The reason is that if you don't end up getting a planeswalker turn three it turns into a midrange since it has so many creature threats. My sideboard was

I wish that I had one more memoricide and maybe find something better go for the throat. I also made a slight modification to the deck and cut a mox opal to get the deck to 60 cards then I cut the two mazes for two inkmoth to favor the alternate win condition. My suggestion is straight cutting the prisms as these got auto cut every time I sideboarded. Although I understand their interaction in the deck I think that going to 23 or 24 land would be better because the only match ups I lost were due to land screw.

Round 1

B/W Infect
This kid was a new player and had a homebrew infect deck that focused on getting unholy strength (and cards like it) on to his infecter. The removal in my deck made short work of this kid and it just became a question of which win condition I was going to persue. Game one I played inferno titan to wipe his board and keep his dudes off the field and jace bounce to deal with ones that were to big, knocking off his enchantments and 0 for 2'ing him a couple times. Really was not much of a match. I didn't bother sideboarding.
1-0

Round 2

Valakut
Game one he got to his primeval titan on turn 7. Tumble magnet locked it down and a second magnet locked down his following turns titan. But I ran out of counters and was sort of on the back foot the whole game.

Sideboard
+2 memoricide +4 flash freeze
-2 prophetic prism -1 everflowing chalice -2 jace the mindsculptor

Game two he mulled to 6 went turn 2 sphere of the suns turn three memoricide naming primeval titan. from here he tried summoning trap that hit a overgrown rampart. He tried akoth the hammer but it was shut down by my tezz. He did get an active valakut but i got a precursor golem and a disco inferno titan that made short work of him.

Sideboard
-3 koth of the hammer
+3 inquisition of kozilek

Game three opening 7 cards were action and a lonely dragonskull summit, 6 cards had no land, 5 for a 3 land hand, IoK and a preordain. I Iok'ed my first turn and hit a lotus cobra leaving him with six lands in hand. i preordained two cards to the bottom digging for land and finally he gets a titan out probably around turn 10 where I am still stuck on three lands with no Everflowing chalice or sphere of the suns or land. Slant I rabbit hunt after the game that went 15ish turns and my next land was 3 cards down. pretty insanely bad luck on this one!
1-1

Round 3
Valakut

This kid was a close friend of the one above and they were running identical builds. I however was not familiar with either of them. This is the first time I've played this deck against valakut (well, i mean round 2 was.) I was confident this game as I didn't think I'd be seeing that much bad luck again.

Game one a turn three koth did some nice work on him. He did get a primeval titan when i tapped out turn 4 for a precursor. Then my turn I swung with the golem which he took and I dropped a inferno titan to kill a cobra and deal two to him. He elected not to swing with his primeval as I had my own untapped inferno titan. He droped a battlement and passed. I attacked and put three damage on his primeval so that if he tried to block a token his titan would be put out of commission. so he went down to 2 from this attack. I dropped a tumble magnet and passed, he scooped.

Sideboard
-3 Koth of the hammer -2 prophetic prism -2 galvanic blast
+4 flash freeze +2 memoricide +2 brittle effigy

Game two he dropped a turn 4 koth as I anticipated. But again tezz turned a chalice into a dude and got to the beats. I dropped a precursor followed up with a wurmcoil. i sat on two freezes in my hand that were exchanged for two of his titans. he seemed to be tilted by me taking him out game one as he knew his friend beat me. My deck was superior and it didn't hurt to have an opponent who was probably not playing to the best of his ability due to tilt. By this I mean I was often representing flash freeze and he played right into it.

2-1

Round 4
Eldrazi? Green

Game one my opponent went elf which i blasted and he was rather shocked as he had no clue what I was playing since I went island tarn for a mountain. he then went jorga warcaller kicked twice elf elf to which i replied with a slagstorm. a Vengevine ate my jace. But then a precursor followed with a Inferno Titan ate my opponent despite him getting another vengevine and recurring them both at one point. a couple tumbles helped but mostly inferno titan made the game impossible for him.

Sideboard
-2 prophetic prism -1 everflowing chalice -2 jace the mind sculptor
+1 slagstorm +2 go for the throat +2 brittle effigy

Game two he played a llanowar elf followed with an arbor elf. I slagstormed these two cards as he only had one land. My oppponent mocked me saying that was a terrible play. So I go for the throat, galvanic blast, slagstorm , and even brittle effigy every dork he played keeping him stuck on three land the whole game. A precursor and wurmcoil ended the game pretty quickly.

I am not enitrely sure if he actually had eldrazi monument in his deck because he did not play it either of our games. This opponent was pretty bad manner the whole game but as soon as he mentioned that slagging his dudes was a bad play I smelled blood and knew that he had no land in hand and was concerned that I was targeting his dorks. After the game he was very nice however and complimented the deck profusely.

I finished 3-1 for 4th place. sideboard needs another memoricide . maybe I should do a couple of shatters or act of treasons or something just to spice it up a bit.

i like your deck idea. but here is couple my suggestions:
    1. i will cut Preordain for 1 duress, 1 Inquisition of Kozilek, 1 Mox Opal and 1 Jace the Mind Sculptor.
    2. i haven't test and not sure how good is Precursor Golem.
    as for sideboard,
    1. i will replace Mark of Mutiny, Volition Reins and All is dust

questions: how do you stop early aggro deck?

At my FNM I have to play against a ton of rebirths. The key to beating them is aggressive mulligan into slagstorm or really anything that looks like it will slow them down until you can draw that storm. typically a turn 3 tezz can do the trick. Precursor on turn 4 can usually stop them in their tracks too unless of course they have a bolt or something. Once the game enters into the midgame they really just dont have a hope. Sadly I was not able to make it out to NQ's this weekend but will be heading to a competitive tournament tomorrow with it. Thanks for the input and I'll be testing your suggestions!

Hey all, I've been lurking on this thread forever and have been testing all kinds of builds but so far neoitems' is by far my favorite for my personal play style. We have an NQ coming up this weekend and just thought I'd post my (neoitems) list and hear some feedback. The only changes to the mainboard I have made thus far is cutting a Mox Opal as I've think I've seen him mention that he was considering doing so, also I always draw two of them. This also cuts the deck back to 60 cards which I am very stubborn on that number! Also, you'll notice the Galvanic Blast over the lightning bolt. I've read both side of the argument for it and am in favor of the blast. In my play testing there generally wasn't anything with a bolt that I couldn't kill with a blast and a lot of the time I was thinking "wish I had a blast instead right now!" Another slight modification was blackcleave cliffs over dragonskull summit because of cards available to me (accidently traded away my summits! whoops!). I don't think this impacts the deck whatsoever otherwise I'd go pick some up before the tournament if there is a reason that I shouldn't. Lastly you will notice the sideboard is different. Effigy has been an all-star and would recommend testing it out if you haven't. I grabbed this from one of the builds on the forum and just love it. There is actually a few U/B tezz/blightsteel decks running around at the different places I play and nothing is quite as satisfying as exiling their blightsteel colossus. Reins hits a lot of stuff and has a lot of application. I am not sold on All is dust but I did pick it up from another deck on here. I so far have only tested dust at one competitive tournament against RUG with no success simply because I did not draw it, although it would have put me in a much better position. Argent sphinxis my bff when it comes down to U/B control or red decks. He defiantly has smashed for a lot of damage in my match ups.

I have been play testing but don't match neo's record. I have 16 FNM matches, 4 competitive matches, and a bazillion casual test matches against g/w caw (which is not a favorable match-up, this build had 2xgenesis wave and 4x hero of bladehold however I do not expect to see this deck in the NQ, so I am disregarding these matches.)

Anyways just looking for some input on the mainboard and sideboard. The side is pretty unfocused but I think its at least interesting? I am completely sold on blast for now but everything else is very welcome. Hopefully, its off to nationals!
