isnt Mirrorpool an updated version of what Snapcaster Mage was originally supposed to be? I mean, you can sack that for a counter in a counter war. Cause if i remember correctly he wanted a land that tapped for blue and sacked for a counter spell.

Now, on to the whole "colorless mana" thing...the people who said <> was a 6th "color" were correct. Though <> is a colorless, its a special type of colorless that is used to cast spells with <> in their title. Just like with colored, it can also tap for colorless 1. Source? Saw it on stream of World Magic Cup

My only concern is, is this gonna be a "Planar Chaos" type of thing where its only for this block, or is this a new permanent thing? If its just this block, i hate it, but if its new permanent, i can dig it.

just by you saying "7 BFZ Expeditions", then yes, they cracked their own boosters to try and raise value and over charge. Nobody with half a brain (unless VERY hard up) would sell an expedition to a LGS..because they only give you half the face value for it if youre lucky. And at the time nobody knew exactly WHAT they would go for because they were new. So my advice...play FNM there, buy elsewhere unless you see a good deal or something you absolutely need.

secondary market has NOTHING to do with people saying "dont turn this into YGO". Reprints, none of that. In fact, a lot of players WANT reprints. Prices are insane. For the price of one modern deck, i could EASILY build 3 competitive YGO decks.

I recently took a trip down memory lane with YGO. Went and found where to play online, looked up some decks, re taught myself in 5 min how to play again, and started playing. I get what people are saying even better than i did before. YGO is almost strictly creature based. The power creep is hilarious, and every deck has the same strategy. Use turn 1/2 to get the best creature in your deck out and win a turn later.

So what they are saying, is bring back "powerful spells" to make the game more interactive. Dont make it brainless "tap this mana, for this creature, swing at your face". Sure, you could very well argue, and probably win that argument, that MTG isnt like that, but its slowly but surly turning into that. What people really want back, is VARIETY. Now, i'm a Blue mage, and naturally, i love control. Playing control is a stretch now a days. We get run the hell over (i'm talking standard here), if we dont draw the perfect cards in the first 4 turns. i was playing Atarka and got hit for like 15 on turn 3. then burned on his next turn for the win.

Anyways, what they mean by "this game is YGO", is that the variety and strategy is "all the same", and you basically only "turn creatures sideways". IMO, its only half true...but thats not what this is about.

Ya know...i remember opening my first pack of MTG like it was just yesterday. I went to the mall with a friend of mine because he told me about this crazy card game where you cast crazy spells and play goblins and try and beat your opponent. We walked into this little card/comic shop and i asked the dude behind the counter if they had any MTG cards. He pointed me to the newest set that was just released and i just stared at the box art. I was in shock and awe. How did i miss this?! I normally thought i was in "the know" with games and this one just slipped by me. I stared at the art, taking it in because it was like nothing i've seen up unto that point. An angel on the box...she was very dark, her wings spread, holding a trident. Ready for war. I looked at the name and noticed the mask in the middle of it and it looked like it was crying, like this angel just destroyed the man behind the mask and his soul was weeping. That was it...i was hooked. I bought 5 packs of Apocalypse. I went and sat down, excited with my friend, and opened the first pack. The man behind the counter asked me if i've ever played before and i told him never, i was just getting into it. I started to sort through the cards, just infatuated by the art and what the cards themselves did. When i got to the back, i noticed a card was shiny!!! I remember, after looking at the card, i asked the dude behind the counter "Avatar of Woe...is that good?". To this day, that remains hands down my FAVORITE card in all of MTG. People always ask me how do i remember my first pack, and i tell them the story and show them the exact Avatar of Woe i opened 14 years ago.

Lets flash forward to now. My fiance knows i love MTG. I talk about it all the time, and i play all the time, and she has started to pick up. Well, while at work, she decided to pick up some packs for HERSELF. I know, i was in shock too!! Well, she didnt tell me when she got home, she just said that she was going into the other room to work on some stuff. Well, i was sitting at the computer for about an hour and a half, doing random stuff, when she peeks her head back in and says "hey, come here for a minute". I walk into the other room and i notice there were pack wrappers scattered, and she had a big grin on her face. Thats when she told me she bought some packs. Well, she also took my boxes of random cards and decided to try and build a deck. It was adorable. She was SO excited. I asked her if i could see what she build and she showed me reluctantly. I was flipping through the random stuff, saying to myself "eh..." when i noticed a foil card that was in there that wasnt in my binder. It was a foil Stratus Dancer. Thats awesome imo. She then proceeded to tell me that she opened that in her first pack. Thats when i flashed back to my days starting out. I could do nothing more than smile.

Well, looking through her deck again, i started to notice things. No, not the completely horrid mana base lol. She was trying to interact every card in her deck, to make one big pile of combo. I remember doing this when i first started. I didnt have the mind state of "this card is garbage, screw that, not even limited worthy", but instead i just loved the art and PLAYING. It kind made me sad. I feel like i missed out on many years of just having REAL fun with the game. Now a days people like me are so obsessed with building the "new best thing" or chasing that rarest, most expensive card, that we forget why this was even made. It was made to sit with friends and have a good time. Thats not to say i dont have a good time when playing, i just realized i dont get that same feeling as i did before. Now a days i dont SEE the interactions with the garbage cards. I just dont care. I dont even pay attention to the art anymore to be honest. You can name a card, and i can tell you what it does, and what it cost, but i probably wont be able to tell you the art on it. Unless of course its a full art land or staples i've been playing with forever. But cards that just come and go, nothing.

So flashing back to my beginner days, i've a new found respect for the casual players. The players who are there to have fun. People who dont care about power level or having the best thing. I salute you. I'm never going to forget again, because my Fiance showed me tonight that all you really need are some junk cards, a few hours, and some good laughs. She looked at me after i looked through her deck and said "...Its not very good is it?" and i just said "No...its not. But you know what...that doesnt even matter. Lets just have fun". I built a junk deck and we just had fun. So, to all of you vets out there who have been playing forever who are super competitive and serious, try thinking back to the beginning. Think about the feeling you had when you first started. MTG is a great game, and i look forward to another 14+ years. Even though i get pissed at junk sets, i'm going to start remembering...the game was invented for FUN, and when you take the fun out of the game, you just get a chore that pisses you off.

Here is a theory i have.

Wizards is running out of ideas lol. 22 years 88 sets later...the tank is running empty. Its bound to happen. The only thin they have LEFT is to rehash old cards, slap new CMC on them, rearrange the rarity, etc. I mean...you can literally only do SO MUCH with a card game. They could go the YGO rout, and add in an "extra deck". That would be new. Well, new for MTG at least. But no, they wont.

I want to say this now. Get it out, and hope people will accept it. The old MTG is dead and gone. Its NEVER coming back. Period. Trust me, it pains me to say it, it really does. I still dream of maybe in the next set, they spoil Counterspell, or Mana Leak, but its NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. Instead we get Spell Shrivel and Scatter to the Winds (<------- LAWL!) Days in standard where you could pay R and cast Lightning Bolt are a memory. A good one, but a memory none the less. *****ing about how a set sucks is very counter intuitive. You should EXPECT it by now.

I had an idea about 2 years ago where i said every rotation, each color should get one staple power spell. The same one over and over, as to calm people down a little. My list made people laugh but i thought it was a good idea. But meh, what do i know? I'm nobody important. But in short, things will NEVER be the same. People come here to complain because they miss what is now old. Let them. I've done it. It helps relieve the frustrations of what you love.

Oh, BTW, this set sucks HARD. Grin Just sayin

So...good old Grixis Control. I've been testing this lest extensively for the past 2 days or so with some surprising results. I say surprising because i didnt expect this to be on the same level as my U/B control list i built, but alas, it has. Its pretty straight forward if you're familiar with control, and how it works. I'm going to go through a few of my card choices with you.

Sulumgar's Scorn - This card right here....is banana sandwich. It has worked out FAR better than i ever thought it would, and has honestly made a few of my play testing buddies mad. It does have its downsides along with its MAJOR upsides, but more likely than not, you're gonna be glad to see it. Why? People love to play on curve. Meaning on turn 3, they drop a 3 mana spell (if they can). Even without a dragon in hand, this prevents that. If you DO have a dragon...well its Counterspell, and hey, who wouldnt want that?

Necromaster Dragon - Another considerably low costed Dragon that can beat face at a moments notice. The pay 2 is absolutely fantastic. A zombie 2/2 token blocker, and mill 2? Yes please. This effect is costed just right to give you mana still open to counter/spot removal.

Dragonlord Kolaghan - Another huge beater that does amazing things...with Haste. Fits perfectly into grixis control because after you're done spot removing/countering their creatures and planeswalkers, just let him sit there. 10 Life to cast a card is pretty brutal. It has won me games, and i've had a few people scoop upon him resolving.

Kolaghan's Command Its a interesting take on Blightning. Thought it does less in terms of discard and damage, it does more in the terms of utility. I normally use it for the 2 damage and discard. Kill the Rabblemaster and discard a card i say!! Other times, the return a creature is very relevant. It gets you back your big beaters and lets you continue on like nothing happened. All in all...its pretty amazing. I love it.

People have asked me why havent i played Silumgar, the Drifting Death, and i say to them, in my testing, he doesnt have much impact. Sure, he's hexproof and flying, but his effect isnt that great in this list, and in my opinion, he's at the bottom of the dragon barrel for me.

So there you have it, a few insights into a few cards. If you have any question/comments, post em!! I'd love to hear what you guys have been doing

I'm also wondering how Clever Impersonator is working out for people, how good is it really?

he's actually not that bad. he gets around hexproof, and can copy their threats before you destroy them. They lay a Elspeth, you can copy it, downfall it, and now YOU have an elspeth for 2 less mana. Also, i've been seein that 6/6 morph creature running around with hexproof, and its a great target. Bascially, you want to copy threats that you cant deal with easy and make them deal with it too.

This is the list i'm testing out right now. I've been testing mainly towards the PTKTK top 8 decks, and i've been crushing them. The Stormbreath just rolls over most decks now a days because white seems to be a major form of removal in this meta. The only card i'm not 100% thrilled about is the Clever Impersonator. Other than that, this decks works like a dream.

i just cant wait till Instant Reanimator starts to creep up. Then people are going to say "hmmm, a 1 mana utility card, or a turn 3 Emrakul swinging for 15 and blowing up my board...hmmmmm..."

You mean like winning one tournament, and then getting hated out by RIP, Cage, and the countless other sideboard cards it can't every beat for the next 6 months?

that is the same as saying "dies to removal". Everything has a weakness, and if you want to talk like that, how about DRS dying to almost everything removal wise in the format period lol.

You see, dies to removal is a very valid argument when used properly. Saying DRS dies to removal is just dumb, because it doesn't die to removal at tempo parity other than LB. That is why it is banned right now.

actually its NOT dumb considering the "dies to removal" argument wasnt valid on other cards being banned.

JTMS - Good luck killing it.

Bloodbraid Elf - Yeah, "dies to removal" doesnt work here, cause it does something upon CASTING, not when it hits the field, etc etc.

at the end of the day, its a 1/2 creature that has some relevant effects. The only thing it hurt the most was SCM, because they could just remove the target, and thats IF they had the mana to do so. Remember, you didnt just cast DRS and sit there with nothing but mana open all game. You played stuff too. Chances are, they took it out while you WERE sitting there with nothing but mana open, or killed it when you were tapped out. Honestly, i NEVER found him to be a "huge" problem. He was quite balanced for what he was. You dropped him but you couldnt turn him on till your next turn, by then he is either dead, or has no targets, and he's just a 1/2 creature. Simple

i hope people understand that this isnt a format, its an experiment. This wont be a format, in my eyes, for a LONG time, or at least till they get their ***** together. Ya know, i read someones post and they made the point that how do you expect people to get into a format, where the "format" is constantly changing to what you play? Lets take Timmy for example. Lets say Timmy goes out, and says "hm, i wanna play modern, but what is GOOD. Oh i know, i'll build Jund!". Timmy goes out, buys everything he needs, and is very happy. Then a week later, Timmy's deck is garbage and he is out the money because he cant afford to purchase new cards for a new deck. This turns Timmy off, and he says "screw this format, i'mma go back to drafting standard". So what does he do? He sells off the rest of his cards, gets half his money back, and will never touch the "format" again.

Thats is what happens, and thats what will continue to happen if they ban out specific cards not due to power level, but to make a certain deck obsolete. Its a pattern that happens, and people need to realize. Pod decks are next, and then the next big deck will get banned out, and so on, and so on. So for those of you who are upset with this ban, i kinda chuckle. You should of known from the start that this was an experiment and you shouldnt invest in something that isnt concrete.

TL;DR - Play Legacy like a real man, your cards hold value there (for the most part). Plus, its WAY more fun than this Modern garbage. Save up those extra pennies and put your big boy panties on.

    i'm torn with this decision.

    1. it could RUIN a lot of things for the MTG card game. Kids...kids everywhere....-shudders- and i'm talking like, more kids than there are now...daycare type of events..

    2. If they did this with the visuals equal to Avatar, then yes....bring it on. I'd pay 20 bucks to see some MTG action in 3d if it was that good of visuals...even if the story sucks.

    3. its going to bomb because they are going to let movie studios make a movie about a game they've probably never played before in their life.
