A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

This movie needs a thread, so here it is.

I just saw this movie last night in IMAX 3D and it was incredible. All of the hype is well-earned and the performances of George Clooney and (especially) Sandra Bullock are fantastic.

The visuals are stunning and will reside in your memory long after the movie has ended. My head is still spinning with some scenes. The story is succinct and well-crafted.

The score was pitch-perfect (pun intended). This is especially important in a movie set in the vacuum of space, where sound is at a minimum. The score created amazing tension. I can't say enough about how impressed I was here.

The attention to detail is phenomenal (where it does not impede major plot points). That is to say, science nerds may wince once or twice during this movie, but those minor (and necessary) inconsistencies are far overshadowed by how much this movie gets completely right.

I've never seen a movie that caused me such a range of visceral reactions. From terror to elation to sorrow to wonder... It was a 90-minute roller coaster ride.

All I could do after the movie ended was stare at the screen and exhale.

Go see this movie if you have the means.
See it in 3D so you can experience the best movie to use the technology to date.
See it in IMAX if you can, because if you don't, you will want to after seeing it.

I've already made plans to see this movie again next weekend. I'm not sure if that will be the last time I see it in theaters.

Its make me sad to such a cruddy card see play.

Apparently the card isn't cruddy since it is seeing competitive play Wink

Here's to hoping more commons and uncommons can make a difference in standard play this season.

I'm in the camp of "the format is what you make it to be."

My meta is cutthroat: Countermagic, ramp, MLD, discard, Jhoira, Uril, Rafiq, Sigarda, etc., etc., etc. yet we still get together more than a couple times a week to play and have a blast doing it. If you're consistently losing at EDH, make a better deck. If someone is consistently winning with a deck, hate him out by better deckbuilding.

To sum up, a quote of myself from another thread:

Sure the format is nutty and broken and aggravating and silly sometimes, but anytime a game of EDH annoys me, another game not too long after shows me a card, synergy or combo I've never seen before and I fall in love with this crazy, spontaneously combusting, gigantic contraption of a format all over again.

This card is fantastic if real.

4cmc instant-speed card draw is very powerful. Especially when it allows you to dig 5 deep and bluff your opponent into giving you what you ned.

And what happens if you are left with no cards in hand and someone casts Austere Command?

I would probably make a bunch of 2/1s with vigilance until i drew into more cards. An indestructible mobilization is good.

Or what about scenarios where you end up with a TON of mana (Grim Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth)? Not like you can draw a bunch of cards in Mono-W.

Once again, you make an butt-ton of 2/1s and go for win without having to draw cards.

    I guess I'm confused. Confused

EDIT: I just realized you were responding to someone else without quoting them. I guess I'm on your side of this argument Wink

I only run them when I'm playing Life from the Loam. Comes-into-play-tapped lands are pretty awful, usually (imo). There's nothing more annoying to me than being one mana short of my best possible play because my only land choice came into play tapped

Gamble into Life from the Loam in my Borborygmos Enraged deck.

Especially with only Gamble in hand.

I've been absent here for a while as I've been playing other games but borbor is still my favorite deck to play when I do get a game in. I just wanted to throw out there a couple newly spoiled cards that might have a home here.

First, and less exciting, is Hammer of Purphoros. Haste is good in this deck, it turns late game extra lands in play into chump blockers, and fills a graveyard for a big Praetor's Council or Creeping Renaissance. I like it but don't know that it needs to be in here.

Yeah, I don't think the hammer is good enough for this deck. I really like the card, don't get me wrong, but haste doesn't do enough for our deck and one hasty 3/3 each turn doesn't add up to much. This deck typically has multiple huge turns mid-late game instead of incrementally bigger turns as the game goes on.

Commune with the Gods however, is amazing! This is the kind of draw/filter/tutor-esque thing we've needed. It looks through 5 cards for two mana, puts lands i graveyards, puts Life from the loam in graveyards, puts keen sense, abundance, snake umbra, gratuitous violence, etcetera in hand. This card is awesome! Absolutely stupid powerful in this deck. Sets up wins for two mana.

Yeah this card caught my eye, too. Binning LftL is ALWAYS a good play Wink Also, grabbing snake umbra or keen sense have become big plays in my version of the deck ever since I added in Zhur-Taa Druid (thanks alfindeol!), so I'm definitely thinking about giving this a spot.

In other news I still run Orcish Lumbejack, still an all-star missing from a lot of lists. Stoked for the new border dual deck one, along with new art Beast Within. Still Looking for room for Primal Order and Burning Earth. I've cut almost all non basics from my deck, keeping filter, shock, and cycling landsEDIT: .NM I have turf, temple, and chasm too

Lumberjack sounds good for basic-land builds of the deck, but I've gone the non-basic route for speed and toolbox. My meta plays almost no non-basic hate and is very fast, so it was kind of a necessary thing. It's also a blast to play with all the cool lands :p Definitely a meta call though, and I'm glad that's working out for you!

That's about it, glad to see all the love for this deck.

    Thanks for dropping in Grin

You are correct, sir. Devotion cares about mana cost, which lands do not have. This puts a damper on the possibility of lands like this in theros, but I still wonder if such a land could exist in the future.

    Soo...

    Devotion Mountain RR
    Land

You may only cast Devotion Mountain if you have not used all of your land drops for the turn. Casting Devotion Mountain counts as a land drop.

T: Add R to your mana pool

Doesn't look right to me :\

  • posted a message on How many of you guys "only" play EDH?
I used to play 60-card during Invasion-Oddysey block when people at my high school would play.

After high school I dropped the habit, sold all of my cards for a month's rent off campus at Uni, then after college picked up the game again through some of my closest friends who just happened to try it out and got hooked on it. We played 60-card exclusively until the commander pre-cons came out 2 summers ago and within about half a year I had sold all of my 60-card deck parts (that weren't useful for EDH) and mostly recycled that into more EDH stuffs.

    Now I only play EDH.

I've always been about playing magic for fun with friends above all else. I'm also a quasi-collector and love grabbing powerful old cards for decks and taking them for a spin, making up for all the magic history I've missed or the old cards I could never play with because I couldn't afford them.

The long turns in EDH also lend themselves to grabbing more beers from the fridge at decent intervals.

Sure the format is nutty and broken and aggravating and silly sometimes, but anytime a game of EDH annoys me, another game not too long after shows me a card, synergy or combo I've never seen before and I fall in love with this crazy, spontaneously combusting, gigantic contraption of a format all over again.

    Best format is best.

i get the vesuva interaction but with thespian is another problem...so i think im not going to run dark depths...heheheh

what do you guys think about Barrel Down Sokenzan? seems like a good card for borbo...sac 3 mountains to kill almost any creatures then if bobo is in play...you get another 9 dmg to a creature or player...

You can still play Dark Depths in a meta full of Thespian's Stages if you're careful and observant.

Rule 1: Don't drop DD until you have Thespian's Stage already out and are in a position to be reactive.

Rule 2: ALWAYS keep TS and 2 colorless mana open to activate at any time.

Rule 3: Don't activate the combo until your opponent's Thespian's Stage is tapped (and you're sure it will stay that way through stack resolution.

Rule 4: If they attempt to activate the combo with their own TS targetting your DD, activate yours in response. Once the stack resolves down to their activation, they will need to choose a new target to copy with TS because your DD is no longer on the field.

So basically you can play around it, but it takes more observance and resourses to do so.

Remember that our deck is the best at the table at grabbing non-basic lands out of the deck. You are much more likely to be using the TS/DD combo than anyone else because of this.

EDIT: Beaten to it by al >:-(

I'm really not sure it's what we want. It's functions are OK, but none of them are really great.

One BASIC land to the hand for 2 mana is terrible. The only time it would even be kind of OK would be if you run out of lands while throwing them worth Borbor. Even then there are more efficient ways to put lands in your hand. Heck, even Lay of the Land would be better.

Target creature from the yard is alright. The issue here is that most of the things we really want to recur aren't creatures. If I'm running recursion as a one shot effect, it needs to get Keen Sense or Abundance from the yard.

Lastly, giving one creature flying for just one turn is the definition of a mediocre effect. Borbor already has evasion anyway.

I really can't think of one good reason to run it, but give it a try and see if it surprises.

Lay of the Land is sorcery speed. That's the main difference here Wink

Think of Evolution Charm as an instant-speed creature recursion spell that also cycles for a basic land.

I understant the flying is underwhelming, but I've had instances where I couldn't get through for enough damage on the ground, or wanted to block some flyer. This is definitely the least important mode of the card, however.

As far as the creature retrieval goes, I think you're underestimating it. Or I'm more into it because of my deck makeup. 2 mana to fish a Rubblehulk or Wrecking Ogre from the yard at instant speed for a completely unforseen alpha strike is good. Hell, 8 mana to double-rubble hulk in response to no blockers sounds hilarious.

2 mana to fish your Eternal Witness out, and use her to return an important non-creature is good.

2 mana to retrieve your bomb from the graveyard lategame sounds good. Nobody wants to deal with Sylvan Primordial, Terastadon, or Avenger of Zendikar again. And you can dig one of them up at EOT of the player to your right's turn! Hooray!

2 mana to get your Oracle of Mul Daya, Solemn Simulacrumor Azusa back from the bin in the mid-game, giving you the edge that all of the other players wanted to deny you by killing them.

2 mana to give your Vexing Shusher another shot, making Bobo stick (which we all know can make the difference with this deck).

Regrowth has the same mana cost, but it can grab anything at sorcery speed.

With Evo Charm, we're limiting ourselves to what card type we can fish out of the bin, but we gain:

    1) Instant speed
    2) A combat trick mode
    3) Basic Landcycling 1G

I'll keep you posted on how it works out. Obviously I have high hopes, though Smile

EDIT: Almost forgot! It also gives us a shuffle effect for oracle and azusa!

I'm going to test it out. Every function works extremely well with the deck.
