The best way to find ideas is just to look through your cards. Find a card or creature type or anything interesting think of ways to expand that card into a deck.
Thanks for the ideas KingCobra, I've seen a few cards in my collection that seem like they could have interesting interactions, I just have a hard time understanding what 'expanding' means. I think I know but it isn't a very methodical explanation.
Where do I look to find synergy? I've looked for a very long time and I can't find a thing that synergizes; just little two card combos that are supportable.
The thing about where I am is that there are no real formats and there's no real concrete meta. The people here are casual extremists. There's no consistency to go off of. Decks change over night and no one follows tournaments or anything. 90% of the games played in my group are either multiplayer or casual 2HG. We don't even have FNM here. Talking about how to work in a format doesn't do much for me. I just want to know how to acquire and build on an idea to be able to make a deck that can fair well in a general sense.
The video with Chapin talking helps a little bit because he does touch on a couple ways to approach deck building but all this talk about deck evolution and how metas change doesn't apply to me in the least.
I hate the players who, win or lose, check their next card and show it to you. When they lose, they say "Oh if I'd gotten this card I'd have so beaten you." If they win, they go on to explain how they could have completely overextended themselves and just beaten you that much harder. (Cuz you get bonus points for that, yo.)
Are there certain stages you go through when you build a deck or does it just sort of happen? Is your process concrete or do certain deck types have different ways that you go about making the deck and testing it?
I'm having a hard time coming up with a deck idea because I just have no idea how I'd go about building it. I used to be able to make decks but after a forced hiatus I've just gotten over with I'm having a hard time picking up where I left off.
Also, where do your deck ideas come from? I can't come up with a deck idea for the life of me. Do they come from seeing card interactions or does flavour inspire you to make something?
In response to the Top responses (thanks for the responses by the way )
The reference of either Sensei's Divining Top or Spin Into Myth could go either way, they work out no matter what you reference, they just seem to work. That's why my group thinks 'spinning' is such a logical name for the action. The only reason I mentioned SIM before Top was it was just the first card where that word caught on. We weren't playing with tops until recently.
I know there are tons of terms like 'burn' and 'mill' that are pretty universal to all Magic playgroups, but does your playgroup have any special words or phrases that are pretty exclusive to your group?
I don't know if anyone else says this but "Put target card on top of it's owner's library" here is refered to as 'spinning', referencing Spin Into Myth. Excommunicate is an example of a card that 'spins'.
I know combat damage doesn't target but where does it say this in the rules? I have a very picky friend who'll only believe it if it's written in the form of a rule and I'm having trouble finding it.
My friend thinks that hexproof nulls infect because combat damage targets. Help me out here..

Edit: Wait I think I'm just missing something here. I think I get what you're saying, sorry.

Sorry. He's kinda, like, dumb.
Thanks though!
Edit: That was almost a haiku.
