Yeah, cryogen got it right. Again, this was a thought experiment, not a plan or even foreshadowing. There is no current plan to bring back BaaC or institute major changes to our Banned List.
I didn't think there was any intention behind the thought excercise, I was just trying to get clarity on what you were saying. Thanks cryogen/Sheldon.

Personally, I'd be a fan of the BaaC list returning and going back to how it was before the list was removed - I think all the legendaries that are banned right now would not be major issues as one of the 99 in a given deck. It was the repeated access to the card as a commander that made them cross over that threshold of being troublemakers.

Well... Griselbrand and Emrakul should stay banned for sure. Probably Erayo too.

I think Sheldon has said Erayo is similar to Braids in that it is a casualty of the BaaC being gone and not exactly a card that is bad for the format as a whole.

Kriggy, 3drinks, Jivanmukta, I assume you three *are* innovating, since you're so upset about this and you have your decks in your signatures.

So what's the deal with your innovations? Are they good but no one is copying them? (would seem to run afoul of your point of everyone just copying each other) Or are they not good? (in which case maybe it's a hard format to innovate in?)

I'd appreciate you used less of a poor argument. One does not need to create in order to critique.

That creates one huge question though.

Why did Bolas make a plane just to have 90% of it be a giant sandstorm.

Because currently planes in mtg exist specifically to show a single aspect of the world. We will not be getting vast and different feeling worlds like Dominaria in magic anymore and it's been this way for a while.

It's really best to not think about it because it's absolutely immersion shattering how small feeling worlds are.

I wonder how many people have actually played with Academy in an EDH deck. It really feels that certain cards like Academy get automatic "no" from many people due to the idea of the card rather than the card itself.

I've played with the card and outside of what could be considered lots of luck or a godhand it was not overwhelming. Unless it is drawn with some combination of Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, and the legal Moxen it simply isn't going to take over a game by itself. And if it does it is a small enough percent of the time that it is irrelevant. Things too often get judged in their absolute best case scenarios instead of how they work in real games.

The problem has less to do with with what casual Timmy or the occasional Johnny player will do, and more to do with the Spike players who will do everything in their power to play the land as early as possible and abuse it. And unfortunately it has super easily met requirements to accelerate players far beyond everyone else's board states.

The EDH banlist not only isn't balanced around Spike players but it rarely cares about them at all. So I don't really see why this matters.

While I can't comment on every players feelings, I know that I personally don't want to sit down for a game of edh in a store event or similar and play games that end before turn 5-6. That's what vintage/legacy/modern is for. Academy has the easily met potential to accelerate board states to where people can end it that quickly. While for some people that is fun, I don't think unbanning a card that is as restricted in other formats as the Power 9 is a good way to expand the popularity of a format in which the spirit of is casual fun.

As we already have Sol Ring and Mana Crypt I also find this argument unconvincing. A small minority of players powergaming is not justification for cards existing on a banlist.

The arguments feel more "anti-Spike" than anti-Academy and it feels rather like they're missing the point.

The stories have been slowly getting not better but more consistently better. There are always some quality stories but the important thing we're seeing is less outright chaff.

Note: Chandra talking like a Pengu1n of D00m 13 year old and everyone talking about how special Nissa is are issues beyond bad story writing. They show that creative still needs to work on their characters. It's concerning that the "important" members of the Gatewatch are far more poorly written than side characters like Dovin.

As always I'm hopeful and enjoy reading the stories every week. I am pretty upset that somehow meh quality poscasts somehow take up too much time for Creative to write stories and that none of the members of creative can spend the time to speak with the community on a consistent basis. Without a doubt it comes off as the laziest dept in WotC.

So does Bolas use the "we were Gods once" speech with everyone he is trying to manipulate or did the authors make a mistake. That was said to Jace and not Liliana if I remember correctly.

I dislike the...lack of cost of the revolt. Why does the revolt suddenly end after Tezz is removed? The vast majority of people had issues with the government as a whole not a single enemy and yet it stays very intact with only a few additions from the renegade side? Maybe it's petty of me but I feel if you're going to write a story with politics in it you can't handwave the politics away.

On a positive note I strangely like "alien" nissa and I wish it's what they went with earlier so I wasn't constantly reminded of how jarring the shifts in her personality and character have been.

Also, how the hell did the old lady survive. The short lived character whose theme is "I'm dying" actually dying doesn't count as a loss to me.

I really feel the characters personalities are being warped to fit the story progression. Creative wants us to go to Amonkhet, but Jace never would and Gideon seems uncharacteristically stupid about it as well. I'm very bothered if characters are going to shift how they act just to fit a series of events rather than the events being shaped around the characters. It's forced and frankly bad writing.

Also, Pia is no better than Baral in how she acts when she sees him. I absolutely despise her as a character.

I don't think anyone is going to try and reasonably argue that Vial isn't dominant. But is a few months long enough for people to master playing with and more importantly against the deck? If a format is healthy people will learn to adjust and play against Vial in time, if the format is not healthy Vial will be removed. It's all a matter of time, and I don't think enough time has passed.

It's really easy. And everyone that say the opposite are just deceivers.

Whether or not a card was designed for a format is irrelevant. If something is not oppressive it is not banworthy. We are playing a competitive format, not an "I don't like the idea of this" format.

Seems like Vial has a similar % to Geist and that deck is nowhere near bannable. I also don't see people complaining about how many Titania decks there are.

I personally think Vial is incredibly dangerous but I'm fully behind the RC waiting on it. 11% is not metagame stifling, although in the past the RC has banned for less. If this is a shift in philosophies that will end up with other "banned as commander" Commanders being freed I think we should all give it a chance.

Will say from a biased perspective, if Vial gets to stay even though she is a multiplayer tuned commander I think similar logic should apply to say...Oloro . Although I'm not sure if that's more of a shot at Vial or a plus for Oloro lol

    Link to Official Announcement

    No changes.

For this update, we have chosen to not make any changes to the format. The format is still adapting to the 20 life total change that was officially instituted in the last update. This update happened at the same time as powerful and popular new Commanders from Commander 2016 were released in addition to the new “Partner” mechanic.
We feel that none of these new Commanders warrant being banned at the current time but we will continue to keep an eye on their performance going forward. Regarding unbans, we still need to watch on the newly developing metagame before choosing to unban more potentially dangerous and powerful cards. We would like to foresee as much as possible that unbans will only create new possibilities for decks without creating format-dominating decks from just one card.

If creative wants to play the comic game they need to have their villians be at least on some level be morally grey. This is a problem I have. That feels like such and "black and white" solution. If you read some of the flavor texts of the terrorists it really feels like they hate ANY sort of restriction rather than just unreasonable ones. It feels less like something that went to far and more like a group of people who are using tighter laws as a justification to tear down a system for their own benefit. Pia's revolution based on personal revenge feels like a black-aligned one rather than the red-aligned one it's supposed to be, and her followers only exemplify that.

I think we're about to see exactly how they try to convince gullible people - by presenting a mountain of fraudulent evidence that is too large to be individually refuted. They then claim to have won the debate on the grounds that they have evidence left unchallenged, or at the very least claim that theirs is among the scientifically valid options, and that the debate over the issue continues.

Dangerous line of reasoning here in my opinion. Calling evidence fraudulent doesn't make it so. At some level you need to show his "evidence" to be faulty beyond just saying it is. Otherwise you're arguing just as poorly.

Yes, I think that just like Balance is probably the last card to come off the ban list Sol Ring is the last card to ever make the ban list, but regardless I think it is very poor format management if you are unwilling to even examine a card.

I don't mean it should be exempt just for existing. I'm saying at this point in time after all the discussion and how firmly ingrained into the format from both a play and philosophical level it is effectively "unbannable" for a lack of a better phrase.

It's not that there shouldn't be discussion, it's that the decision has been made whether or not some people accept it.

posted a message on Wrexial, the Risen Deep — Toolbox of Evil
    Zepfan,

My first EDH deck (and the basis for the Marchesa deck I play) was Wrexial.

I see you like having infect as another wincon. Rather than the uninspiring Phyresis why not consider Corrupted Conscious? It both enables the common "theft" theme in Wrexial decks while also acting as the removed spell.

In general cards like High Tide and Dark Ritual should only be used in EDH when attempting a more "all in" combo. You would be better served by decent 2cmc rocks like Talisman of Dominance or Dimir Signet. If you feel you have enough rocks you can simply add more threats/answers instead.

Mind Grind seems superior to an inconsistent card like Mind's Dilation. In addition it further feeds into your mill theme and hits all opponents. Depending on game length is can close out a game itself with enough mana poured into it.

If you're going to run countermagic it's best to make sure they are all hard counters that are either cheap or provide additional value. Spells like Turn Aside and Psychic Strike are low impact and rarely earn their spot. Spells like Cryptic Command, Mystic Confluence, and Mana Drain are the top tier forms of spell control but they are expensive (especially Drain). Lower cost options like Dismiss and Desertion would compliment your low cost other countermagic well.

I think Hedron Matrix is utter trash.

Vial smasher is the best commander in that's it should be excellent in the now 20 life dual
    Commander format.

She is...potentially concerning. But her aside all the partners seem completely fair in Duel Commander. Have you joined us in the best worst format Mox?

In regular EDH I think partner is a fantastic addition and am interested to see if they continue with it every 3 or so years (any faster and we get too many imo).

I don't think it's fair to compare WotC to Games Workshop. Wotc seems to actually care about its players.

Okay, I have to admit I actually laughed at that. I understand what you mean, but that was the old Games Workshop; it's under new management now, and it really shows.

I don't want to detract from the conversation but......the current End Times bull***** going on in 40k and the End Times of WH Fantasy shows that GW has absolutely no concern for what the players want or care about.

WotC for all its failings with the story is obviously trying and it really does not feel like a cash grab a la Games Workshop. There may be issues with how stories are told, transparency with the writers, Doug being infinitely worse than Brady (yawgmoth bless him), sort of pandering stories, BUT in spite of all the problems WotC is still excellent at worldbuilding and damn good at storytelling a decent portion of the time. And for a fantasy setting based on a bloody card game I think we're doing damn well.

Haven't had a chance to play duel since the new commanders. My opinions on r/b command are based on how it seems it should be. Versatile instant speed removal/disruption is something that I believe should always be considered. I can't reasonably think of a scenario where the card is not good and it will never be "dead".

I think the RB command deserves a spot.
Dismember goes in nearly every black deck.
Char/Blue Char depend how just how aggressive you're building. I can see them in some lists but not all.
    Yes, painlands are amazing.

Life totals are meaningless. Throw all away for victory.

That spot is taken by the far superior dominus of fealty. It is recurrable and can choose different targets offering much more utility.

It has been a year full of interesting cards. Any updates for this deck, as I am planning to heavily copy it, and only want the best! Wink

    Cheers!

The deck has changed once again and I'll be updating it. With the release of Grenzo, Havoc Raiser I've wanted to test some of the red theft cards. So Marchesa is now the Commander and she fits quite well both thematically and mechanically. What's better than stealing/cloning your opponents toys? Being able to reset them and protect them.

If you want to discuss the Lazav list please feel free. I'm not making a new thread for Marchesa because I'd rather not split discussion for such similar lists. I'll try and remember the specific changes if you need for your deck.

I feel lumping all the mods into a pile is just as silly as lumping people into an "RC apologist" pile. Arguments sound better when they aren't trying to create an "us vs them" narrative.

sick1982: I think the bigger issue here is that Commander whether Duel or Traditional is absolutely not a new player format. Once a player understands the groundwork of how different formats function and how to easily filter through the numerous varying banlists the actual names of the formats become irrelevant.

The issue of "casual" players and what that means in normal 40 life multiplayer Commander has always been a contentious issue. I assure you that this isn't an issue that Duel Commander created nor is it one in any way fixed by something as unnecessary as a name change.

Went to order all of the new commanders cash in hand. Did not see an option to buy them non-foil. Deleted cart.

I was planning on adding them all to my EDH Cube, but since readability is a huge priority (even huger than my hatred for foils) these things are worthless to me. Like literally, if you offered to give them to me for free I would decline because they take up space that readable cards could be taking.

The Partner cards were something I was really looking forward to too.

    That's a shame Gals.
