It's been decided that he's best played in small doses. I'll most likely put it back together around Christmas. After the guys have had their fill of my other two main decks, Intet (where Kozy is currently employed) and Sharuum (non combo beat down.... Ok. A little combo...), I'll bring him back to test out their decks. Realistically he could end up as a 'gear check' for the guys in the group, but to bring him weekly is too much. Kills me too because this deck was like the ninth doctor... Fantastic.
So, played Kozy last night in what is almost it's final form... And was pretty well asked not to bring it back. It's way beyond the abilities of my playgroup to deal with, and took all five of my opponents to take me down. Coming back completely from an overloaded cyclonic rift, and actually profiting from it because I got to cast Kozy again? Yeah. Won't lie, kinda saw it coming. Gonna hold onto the list because I plan to play in other circles if I can, but for now it has to come apart to bandage the social contract. Thanks for the awesome deck though!
I'm typically considered the biggest threat regardless. 19 years in the game does something for one's ability to threat assess, and 90% of the time, I'd wanna attack me too. The group itself is coming around to be more powerful almost every session we have, so it's nice when I can make a big play and still be considered not so bad. Last night we had to deal with Rakdos, Lord of Riots. She (player) swings to an open opponent, then drops sheoldred and sire of insanity. Instantly, I'm not the big target anymore! I was however the one to deal with both of them, and then magically take back table aggro.
The table for me is usually 5+ players, so even though this excels in fewer, I've usually got a chance to throw something crazy into the mix. I'm not really there to win (I've done that enough with my other brews (Intet, Sharuum non combo beatdown, jaya ballard)), that having Khaotic Kozy makes it just explosive and fun.
All that aside, got my Mana Vault (5th ed, but beggars can't be choosers), Basalt Monolith (rev), Mana Crypt (book promo) and a nice Unlimited Sol Ring last night. Very nice.
Well, played against a board of five opponents last night. I am thoroughly convinced about Soul Conduit now! No one really thought about it when I dropped it, but the looks on their faces when I saved the rakdos, lord of riots player and crippled the nicol bolas deck (bolas swings at a crippled rakdos at 7 life, so I gave rakdos bolas' life, and they tanked enough to survive at 1, while leaving bolas at 7 and tapped out)? Absolutely priceless.
Used conduit again near the end of the game (I lost, but man... I wanna marry this deck) to survive a fair sized token army swing by stealing the Ghave players life total. The amount of times that I saw cocked heads and open mouths at the plays this deck was pulling off made the eventual loss feel like a win to me!
Concerning proper mulls, up until the other day we had been going about it all wrong. We were setting aside the whole hand regardless and drawing one less, as opposed to the proper way of dropping any amount and drawing one less than the total discarded. Admittedly, the games have started off a whole lot smoother for everyone, and a little more 'rocky' for me! (Obvious pun I hope)
Shimmer myr is in my list now, and after tonight I'll add mana crypt, mana vault, and basalt monolith (big trade coming) for a nice pile of new rocks. Needless to say , people fear the mono brown.
So, today managed a turn 5 Kozilek thanks to Wurmcoil Engine and Krark Clan Ironworks. Dropped wurmcoil on turn five with help from crystal vein, then sac'd wurm for 2, each token for two more, random artifact for 2, then the iron works for final 2 to drop Kozy. I think the look on the other guys faces was priceless. I can't help but love it. Sorry if I'm off topic, but man, I have to get this out. Forgot to load Shimmer Myr in last night, but he's going in tomorrow before our big weekly game.
I'm afraid Skullclamp doesn't work on Kozilek because he gets send to the command zone (unless you don't want that?). Either way still a great card.
By the way, 21psn?! not even 20? well it's still two hits with Blightsteel but I hate house rules like that. Skytthrix isn't really played around your parts I guess? Anyway, cutting Blightsteel could be good, he is indestructible though and can still two-shot people. It's up to you.
Alright, joke's on me, never had Kozy hooked up with clamp. Have had it on others though for the same reason, and it's worked out just fine. And yeah, I was against the 21 psn rule, but that's because I was the one playing Skittles anyway (albeit inside of a Scion shell). I can see holding onto Blightsteel actually. We've got a guy that runs Avacyn, so with a little aerial persuasion, it'd be a nice deterrent to keep her off my back.
The reason for 21 Poison was to make it similar to cmdr dmg. Poison decks in our meta can still similarly carry out a plan to drop people in the same method as getting through with the general if they so choose, but no one plays them. Same deal with MLD, it's just not part of how we play. They're going to be in for a surprise next week when my Crucible gets here from SCG, lol. Nobody said anything about targeted LD !
Well, seems I've stirred the pot a bit here, and for that... awesome! Definitely gonna slam Shimmer Myr into the deck (Shimmering Shimmer Myr (yay foil!) even). Going to pick up a Colossus of Arkos as well, using him to replace the One Shot Robot that is Mr. Blightsteel. Our playgroup has adopted a 21 psn counter rule, so he's not as effective (Chances are I'll eat my words here).
To go back to Skullclamp, can't say I've ever had a dead draw with it. I'll put the thing on Kozy himself before he ends up getting removed or sac'd just to get that much more Juice. Mmmmm Juice... Any creature and every creature. Sacrificing something to Helm? Clamp it. Tokens? Clamp it. Goats? Oh you'd better clamp it. Might as well just call me Jed.
Well that or your playgroup might get stronger and better by trying to react to such a deck. It's always fun to see metagames "evolve".
Yeah, I kinda forced a few evolutions in my playgroup with my Intet the Dreamer deck (heavily built in homage to Sheldon Menerey's). My group is starting to come along for what it's worth, and with the amount of artifacts in this deck, and with the new influx of enchantment and artifacts now with Theros (looking at you Gods...), people are dealing with things a lot better.
Saw that you didn't run Shimmer Myr (also gave main reason for doing so as couldn't be used to cast Kozy). I'm considering it, since it could enable some off turn shenanighans to react with things like Spine, instant speed Myr Battlesphere to drop extra blockers and such, and other sorts of bonuses to use all that untapped mana once you've got Unwinding Clock and such online. I'm having difficulty seeing how this isn't a good thing really, aside from "what do I take out to do this?" Any input?
Picking up a Mana Crypt this weekend, pretty excited about that! Still amazed by the versitility of this deck. Got into a game where one player was stomping around with Rakdos, Lord of Riots, he swings with Rakdos at an open player, hits, drops nearly free Sire of Insanity and Sheoldred. This was like turn 5, I had taken the immediate hate the first 4 turns where my rocks were smashed and they left me for dead. For three turns we sat there while the riots continued, no one could get a card in hand to help out, and finally, someone killed sheoldred, I ramped out kozy, and in the next few turns wrecked the table. I'm starting to think that the deck is going to be too strong for my current group, so it'll be one of those once a night or once every other game night decks. Also, 1v1 this thing was a house. Ramped out T5, pretty much GG after that.
Yeah, I'm aware of the switcheroo insanity, and that kinda makes me wanna keep it as a potential side board card. We're a group of anywhere from 5-8 on a Saturday night.
Concerning mana after casting Kozy, never really an issue. I've been casting him consistently on T6-7, and usually have 2 mana left by that point as well. Not to mention those tasty 4 card draws into more sources (man I'm loving this deck).
One thing that I do love about Soul Conduit is that you don't have to sac it, and with some unwinding clock or clock of omens action, lots of swappy craziness... Ok, I'll get one... and foils are cheap!
In the process of putting together this list (straight out of the primer), about 13 cards from completion. Just wanna say that even without all of the high end mana rocks and such (crypt, grim monolith, etc), this deck has been a blast to play. Only really have one change that I'm making for it, and that's dropping Soul Conduit for Fleetfeather Sandals. Figured one more haste effect, with the addition of flying would do me some good. Convince me to keep Soul Conduit?
1. Trying to finish Intet, the Dreamer. My deck is heavily based of Sheldon Menery's, main differences being due to the fact that Mana Drain, Gaea's Cradle, original duals, etc aren't in my budget. Just traded recently for a Maze of Ith and a Scroll Rack actually. It's shaping up rather nicely otherwise.
2. Put together a Sharuum combo deck (yeah yeah, been done, and yeah, it's 'that' combo), just to give the guys something to deal with here and there for a laugh, or when I'm feeling particularly like a pain in the backside. I don't mind being the target, fun to be challanged, and a great way I find to see how my deck is coming along. The long term goal is to Foil out this deck (Minus JTMS, Sharuum and Intet each have one, not foil. Got lucky and pulled them from packs during WWK!).
3. Trying to put together some under powered decks for times that I'm trying to get new players into the format. Currently have Ezuri, Chorus of the Conclave, and The Mimeoplasm (had to hold back big time, he almost turned into major dredge Mimeo).
Awesome! Welcome to the forum! I'm from NS originally, now in NB. Used to play at Dalhousie at the SUB on the weekends. You're in for a good time, magic's more popular than ever!
1. When someone doesn't know what their own cards do. I understand that we have new player in our group (new to the game), and I'm completely willing to help deal with situations and explain things to them, but there's a point where it behooves you to spend some time researching how things can interact, when you can play things, etc. This is one of the biggest time wasters in our group.
2. When the Heavy Hitters of a play group instantly take out the weaker players, knowing full well that the other heavy's are the real issue. Give the small timers a chance to enjoy the game (this coming from one of the Heavy hitters of our group). Yes, we all like to win, but I guess this all goes back to the threat assessment that's been a topic this whole time.
3. When someone borrows a deck from me, keeping everything heads up. Drives me crazy. How hard is it to do this?!
4. Carried grudges. It's been talked about, I'll stop there.
Now, not to ruffle anyone up, but a few points I don't mind that have been talked about.
1. Infinite combo/dmg wins. Our group has no issue with this. Just means we shuffle up and get another game on the go.
2. Proxies. Within reason I guess is where this goes for us. We have one guy that runs a few Dual lands in his sliver deck to compliment the real duals that he actually has in there. No one really minds. There's another guy that shelled out a few hundred for Foil full art zendikar style duals. Totally fine with it. I guess the issue here would be like what was mentioned about half of your deck being staples and printing it all out instead of putting effort into getting the cards. All of the proxies used at our group are pretty good quality as well, not just B&W jammed into a sleeve roughly cut out.
Anyway, /rant, just had to get some of this out. Thanks for reading.
