I've made it my life's mission to figure out how to construct a deck around Blue Sun's Zenith, Call to Mind, Selective Memory and Mitotic Manipulation, and yes, before you ask, I am indeed serious.

What I have in mind is using fetches to thin the library, and maybe splashing green with Green Sun's Zenith to grab some win conditions . . .

It's complicated, but I want to try it!

my reaction would be "Who cares?"

It has nothing to do with me, I could care less what your orientation is.

Why should you feel the need to tell someone you play a game of cards with? We play a card game for fun and to get away, not to share life stories from the moment of birth to the current day.

I think the only time it should come up is if someone asks you and you feel like answering, but will that situation even happen? I'd guess, probably not, but it isn't exactly uncommon to be asked,"So do you have a girlfriend or something?" by someone who has gotten to know you for a while, especially if you already discuss personal stuff.

But other than that, for people who are just fringe acquaintances, they probably don't care either way and probably don't care enough to know.

Just going out and saying it isn't something you should do, that's just dumb . . . Just play cards and have fun, leave all that other crap out of it unless someone ELSE brings up the subject.

I dunno, things like esper charming myself and whatnot. I can't think of any off hand but I'm sure I could.

I know what you mean, there was a guy who got a match loss or something for using Vendillion Clique without declaring a target, when he played it, his opponent showed him his hand, again, without the guy playing Clique having declared a target player.

Then the guy casting Clique writes down all the cards in the other guys hand, then declares he's targeting himself . . .

The guy got a match loss because then a Path to Exile went on the stack, and an illegal game state was formed.

I'm only going off the top of my head, I can't click the above link from work because it's blocked here, but that article should explain it better, if someone wants to copy/paste the relevant info, that's cool. I think my recollection is roughly correct.

    You can still win FNM's for store credit . . . .

first place at a tourney where i live is about $150-300 in store credit depending on turnout. You can buy a couple foils with those.

My mom used to lecture me when I was 10 that D&D and other games were for kids and a waste of time.

Now I'm a stay-at-home dad and my wife works in the industry. My mother is estranged from us and on her 4th marriage.

Keep on gaming and if you choose to get married, aim for a gamer. Smile

You sound like a role model, I approve.

You're absolutely right when you say "aim for a gamer." when it comes to your life partner.

Wafo has not played a single nonfoil card in any constructed tournament since he started playing competitively (in 2000 I think). It is really quite amazing.

His winnings probably paid for them many times over. I think it's awesome to play with a fully foiled out deck if you can afford it. I think it adds a little intimidation factor to the game to be sitting across from a guy with a completely foiled out deck.

I remember reading Matignon's tourney report on SCG and he mentioned that Wafo stopped at Saito's store in Japan while he was there to pick up a few Japanese foils. That's pretty cool.

Only way I'd play with all foils is if i didn't have to pay for them out of pocket (I.E. they came from money from winning tourneys or trades).

I know both of those cost a little money, but not as much if you're decent at winning or trading.

I play nothing but limited, and I have my lands pre-sleeved inside a fatpack box. Used to have a bunch of foil land, but someone told me that they can bend too easily and make the deck seemed "marked".

After the drama with that Matt Nass guy at a PTQ, I decided to just play regular, non-foil lands. Don't want to give anyone a reason to complain.

I clicked the link to that thread, that's kinda garbage.

I think you SHOULD be allowed to play with foils, but I do know they bend rather easily and get warped, so it's better not to, in case the rules lawyers call a judge on you.

It's either all foils or not, and more people will play with non foils than foils.

I do remember one really awesome foiled out deck. Guillaume Wafo-Tapa's Mystical Teachings deck, I think he won Amsterdam 2010 with it last September? completely foiled out, you can see the Deck Tech video for it, I was actually looking at it last night.

Seems like Wafo really likes his foils.

I think it's stupid that foils are an either/or proposition Frown

I know exactly what you mean, I don't need to hold my hand while playing, I tend to just put it down on the table and watch what my opponent does. I often only pick up my hand if I need to play something.

What kind of playstyle do you guys employ when you play?

Do you take every possible second to decide what to do? Do you tend to play fast? Do you already have your next move in mind as soon as you see the other opponent play out his turn? Do you think 2-3 turns down the road?

Or, do you tend to force yourself to pause, look at the board, look at graveyards, count how many cards your opponent has, look at the cards in your hand, before finally making a decision what to do on your turn?

Do you tend to play everything in your first main phase, or do you opt to attack first, then cast things in your second main phase?

You can add anything else about your playstyle if you like. I'm just curious what the majority/minority of you guys prefer to do while playing.

When I say take your time, I don't mean you're spending all eternity deciding what to do, merely that you take a moment to consider everything before deciding on a course of action.

+1 for Vedalkan Anatomist, it's a very very VERY good card, you can tap down their biggest threat or off a weenie to give you creature advantage, and you can also whittle down their biggest threats turn by turn, or clear the way for your guys to get through.

I see you have Treasure Mage and Platinum Emperion, if you're gonna play some blue, throw in Treasure Mage, he offers you a 2/2 body for 3, as well as gaining you card advantage by putting the Emperion in your hand.

I drafted a Treasure Mage in a draft, and I opened a Myr Battlesphere on Saturday, don't underestimate how good Treasure Mage is, he's more than he appears to be at first glance.

You honestly have one of the worst pools I've ever seen, but . . . all is not lost.

RUG control is very good against Caw Blade, it made 2nd and 8th in DC

I will be playing RUG control this weekend provided I can get the RG cards I need for the deck.

  • posted a message on So I won the 2nd draft I've ever played!
Last night at the LGS, we decided to do an impromptu draft, and we had 14 players, the draft was SOM-MBS-MBS.

I opened up my SOM pack and got Myr Battlesphere. I thought so far so good . . . then I got passed Volition Reins out of one of the SOM packs and Corrupted Conscience out of one of the MBS packs!!

I was drafting blue/black then like right around the middle of the draft, I noticed I was taking a lot of artifact creatures, and thought to myself

why not just go with a blue/colorless deck and avoid color screw?

Sounded good to me, so I kept taking blue and colorless, but I did take a Grasp of Darkness, mostly to prevent someone else from getting it, I also took a Kuldotha Ringleader for the same purpose.

Here's what I ended up with, I didn't bother with a sideboard, none neccessary.

    1x Myr Battlesphere
    2x Turn the Tide
    1x Bonds of Quicksilver
    1x Disperse
    4x Serum Raker!!!! Smile
    1x Treasure Mage Smile
    2x Dross Ripper
    2x Tangle Hulk
    1x riddlesmith
    1x vekalden Anatomist (very clutch!)
1x Vivisection (for a disabled creature i can sac to draw 3 cards)
1x Volition Reins (omg? Smile )
    1x Razorfield Rhino
    1x Neurok Replica
    1x Soliton
    1x Corrupted Conscience
    1x Gust Skimmer
    17x Island

the best part was, there was rarely a game where i didn't see 3 Islands in my starting hand, that happened way too often.

I ended up splitting 1st and splitting 14 packs, 7 apiece, cause it was 1:20 a.m. in the morning and I wanted to go home and sleep, we started the draft at 9:00 p.m., crazy stuff.
