Their creature, in response to an aura, pump, etc. (even on their one large creature in response to a Prime Speaker Zegana cast , and a Conjurer's Closet activation in one game) - check!
My creature, in response to a kill/copy/steal - check!
Followed by enchantment hate - check!
On your blocker to save it from combat post blocks - check!
etc. etc.
I've had people so confused with this one card because they can't see what it can do...
I played against a discard/kill things deck the other day, and I was just praying I didn't see Haunting Echoes, as it would have removed around 65-70% of my library.
I have to admit, when I evoke some nerd rage over card choices I feel a perverse satisfaction. However, if it goes too far it can definitely be annoying.
I was in a Theros full block draft on MTGO and first picked Daring Thief, which led to some very strange card priorities going forward. The first guy I played went insane when I swapped my Ephara's Radiance for his Thassa, God of the Sea, and it just got worse from there.
He went very abusive as he lost, and I poked the bear with an "I win, and you do that other thing...".
He then proceeded to go into the between rounds chat to try and tell everyone what I had in my deck, which was a bit over the top.
The best bet for you would be to start breaking down some of these conceptions.
Standard sucks? Think about what would make the experience fun, and build a deck that does it.
Everyone plays the same decks in Modern? That is massive information advantage. Build decks that do the unexpected; a lot of those tuned lists are weak to the unfamiliar. I have won 4 out of 6 matches against absurdly expensive Pod decks with my $10, no-rares concoction.
Or just move into the EDH realm, where awesome is almost always the goal.
I have never played a deck that I didn't design and build myself. You will find that if you embrace the creative side of things that the game is a lot more enjoyable.
I used Overlord, and it was great. However, seeing it as your general was very polarizing to the board. If being the Archenemy is not to your liking, I would stay away.
I chose Legion when I rebuilt the deck for my fiance. It tends to get a far less negative reaction thus far, and lets her focus on aggro. The deck runs well and she has had good experiences.
Hivelord is pretty awesome, and I am almost certain it will be taking its turn on top. Particularly as she hates having her things blown up...
No Reliquary Tower? It really seems like you'd need the effect in this deck.
My other thoughts:
Telepathy - the information advantage is amazing Avoid Fate - solid counter to protect Edric, and if you leave one green up no one will see it coming Burgeoning - to get all the lands you draw out Green Sun's Zenith - good for specialty creatures Mystic Speculation - repeatable filtering Storm Front - get opposing flyers out of the way Wind Zendikon - pet card for me, but works in the deck Library of Leng - Tower take 2 Meekstone - never been a more perfect deck for it
Other than that, I would chop a bunch of stuff (around 70% or so).
All of the mana dorks can go in favor of cards that get more land into play, as an example.
I am also not a big fan of one-shot pump spells for EDH. Think more in terms of reusable effects and evasion for Omnath.
Some cards that have been clutch for me in my Omnath deck:
Gilded Drake is at the top of that budget range, but it is pretty spectacular with Roon and/or Venser. Mystic Snake is pretty solid. Dismiss into Dream is always amazing in my experience, and turns Roon into a Murderer
And I always recommend Proteus Staff in decks like these. It works well to upgrade creatures, and is ridiculous if you have a steal / tokens subtheme. Oh, and it also can get rid of any unanswerable threats your opponents play, that's pretty good...
This is my only Modern deck, and it has an absurd win percentage.
When I first started playing, I fell in love with Raid Bombardment. Thus I have had at least one deck with it featured the entire time.
Plus the synergy with the Spitfire is insane.
It shows as $6.74, and $10.14 w/sideboard.
I just won a match online against a $1000 deck (estimate) despite 2 Kor Firewalkers being out in game 3.
Ixidron also makes people a bit nutty, especially when it comes to knowing which cards are which.
Cold Storage started a flurry of phone lookups when I started tucking stolen creatures under it.
Grim Feast is errataed to be all opponents for some reason, which prompted someone to drop in one game.
And everything that Soul Sculptor does.
I've had people so confused with this one card because they can't see what it can do...
It costs a lot of mana, but Grave Betrayal seems perfect.
Also:
Mimic Vat
No Mercy
Blood Artist
Staff of Nin
Mindmoil
Vicious Shadows
I have scraped an insane amount of wins from Quest for Pure Flame. Including one the other day over TWO Kor Firewalkers.
I was in a Theros full block draft on MTGO and first picked Daring Thief, which led to some very strange card priorities going forward. The first guy I played went insane when I swapped my Ephara's Radiance for his Thassa, God of the Sea, and it just got worse from there.

He then proceeded to go into the between rounds chat to try and tell everyone what I had in my deck, which was a bit over the top.
If I'm the only one playing a disruptive deck, maybe you shouldn't attack me all out and kingmake the other guy.
Oh, and the constant whining about people whining in EDH. We get it, the competitive mindset is baffled by social gaming.

I know that's a lot, obviously pick and choose ones that speak to you..
Mystic Snake is pretty solid.
Dismiss into Dream is always amazing in my experience, and turns Roon into a Murderer
Is Illusionist's Bracers too cute? Seems like it could be good
