I did have a quick-start Rafiq build which tried to put Rafiq in play T3 and finish one player T4. However, it did not compete very effectively at large tables. There was just too much removal to get through. And once Deeds/Ostone/All is Dust/etc cleared my board it usually wasn't long before I hit top-deck mode. There wasn't a way to recover from a board wipe. And at a 6-man table there will be many board wipes. One thing I did not try was LD. I think that avenue had promise but I wanted to put all my opponents down humanely, all at once, so no one had to wait, so I didn't ever venture down that route

hey thx for the reply. yea the LD is kinda degenerate, but its sometimes necessary vs some of the other competetive decks. if not i just let it sit in hand to try and make it "humane" as u put.
lotus petal - it can provide a turn 2 rafiq, free mana to excell.
swiftfoot - a 2nd greaves to ensure spot removal is more difficult to hit rafiq
trailblazers boot - 95% of the field is nonbasic lands!
jitte - usually to kill chump blockers or other generals, or the +2 +2 on double strike hit with rafiq
plate - board wipe protection
swords - more of a gimmick, i just wanted each sword in the deck for fun
mother of runes - protection for offense and defense on rafiq
lotus cobra - it may just be my love for standard in alara block, but i just love this guy's mana excel with the fetchlands
saffi - usually sac to save rafiq on boardwipes and such
dauntless - same as saffi..
sublime - not sure about this card yet... the exalted stacks with the mana dorks out is nice, but i could just be getting greedy
burgeoning - turn 1 play it.. usually by the time its back to me i turn 2 rafiq
canopy cover - the MAIN reason is for the hexproof which i can dig out with sovereigns
rhystic study - to help save me from top deck mode, keep fueling the deck, and with how early/quick this deck can be, usually opponents are forced to let me draw the cards
steel/shield - sovereigns best targets besides conscription
mental mistep - plow/path stopper usually. or just stop a turn 1 sol ring. it actually works surprisingly well. the other counters are usually for board wipes or other removal targeted to rafiq. isnt a Rafiq deck suppose to have counters?
divine reckoning - havnt tested it yet... in theory it sounds good...
might of oaks - 1 shot kill if it goes through
apostles - unblockable usually.. or let a spot removal fizzle
distortion strike - unblockable for 2 turns
temporal mastery - for 2 mana a 2nd turn do more damage, especially if miracled turn 4-6.
tutors - not sure why u wouldnt want these in, tutor whatever you need. with steel i find myself hitting greaves or a sword.. worldy is the late game sun titan or sovereigns, enlightened can be for a sol ring or a top usually, and mystical is great for hitting temporal mastery
Jace - the brainstorm is the main reason, if not his unsummon ability makes him great to clear a path for rafiq
elspeth - +3+3 flying on rafiq, if u build up to her ult, its just a great day.
This is just me explaining why i have these cards in, not necessarily defending them. Enlighten me and tell me what you would change these cards for after reading my reasoning and tell me why. Does the quick/aggressive route usually not work? do i need more counters or no counters?
Iv been looking for a competitive Rafiq thread for a while now with some GOOD input, looks like im in the right place. Anyways, here's what iv got goin on.
So yea, very quick and aggressive deck. id like some feedback as i am trying to improve it more. Any questions on card choices, just ask and i will try to " justify" them.
I have all of these creatures at my disposal, and I can think of pros and cons for each of them, what are people running, and how are they performing for you?
I've been trying variations on Ben Starks list, and I've found that lots of aggro decks can consistently hammer at me bit by bit and if I run out of answers and/or draw and something finally slips through, I have no way of ending the game in time to prevent them whittling me down.
your MD seems solid. i wouldnt change it. the SB however looks like it needs help especially if aggro is dominating you. room for another curse or 2 perhaps? take out a bomb and elixir. if elixir is in for control matchup, just add jace, he ends it quick if he sticks.
1 - bloodline keeper
hes just doesnt cut it for the MD. IMO i like dungeon geist over him.
2 - Grave Dad
probably your best bet to squeeze in the MD, he comes in with 2 2/2 bodys so O-ring leaves u with creatures atleast. amazing finisher if your opponent has no answer. Best creature in standard for 6cc as far as board presence.
3 - wurmcoil
tap out for wurmcoil, pass turn. O-ring... Batterskull is a little better right now as for as lifegain. quicker and u can bounce. ( plus wurmcoil can be doombladed )
4 - Sphinx
as a wincon? just no.... hes good CA ( IF HE StICKS!) hes usually a sitting duck out there and doesnt provide the board presence like Grave titan. Blue suns, alchemys, and think twice is all the CA u needs anyway.
I Love your MD and wouldnt change too much of it, just the board some. If u scroll up u can see my list to see what im running. if Grave dad doesnt get it done game 1, then just be patient, drownyards will get them.
dungeon geist is going to be a major staple in controlling titans. however might frost titan start seeing some play so that there is some evasion to dungeon geist?
if anything with dungeon geist i think olivia voldaren might see a drop in use as they do what she was used for, but more color friendly to blue black control.
how would olivia see less play? i am not disagreeing with u at all but geist wont keep olivia from using her abilitys. and theyr 2 very different cards used for different things. Olivia has become grixis staple thx to chapin.
Anyhow, jonrambo, what did you side Dungeon Geist in against?
i added it to the board for control mirror when all they keep out is 1 wurmcoil or a titan. last nite i actually found it to be a good card against wolfun as well. his MAIN win con was grave titan, all i had to do was keep it under lock with the geist. iv learned it is also not a bad card vs delver. 4 cc... tap a delver, block + kill a geist ( st traft). i believe it is the replacement for bloodline keeper in the board.
Round 1 -0/2 mono green undying
Really a sad 2 games for me. game 1 i get land flooded and i get beatdown with geists and a vorapede.
game 2 i board out karn, blue sun, and 1 think twice for 1 batterskull 1 tragic slip 1 black sun. Go figure, i get land screwed this time and he walks on me again. probably just a bad shuffle on my part.
Round 2 - 2/1 Conley wood's B/G Wolfrun ramp
game 1 was rough, he gets me with grave titans and i missed my counters. Game 2 i board out 2 curses, 3 tragic slips, and 1 black sun for 2 negates, 1 phantasmal image, 2 dungeon geist and 1 Jace. i allowed most of the ramp to happen the next 2 games as i just countered all his threats. dungeon geist shined in this matchup as i managed to keep his titans on a lock. i ended boths games with either jace or drownyard. mill just seemed the best route to go since titans didnt get to swing too often.
Round 3 - 2/0 Grixis Heartless Summoning ( Lich combo )
Very easy matchup, just had to keep lich off the board. game 2 i board out 2 doom blades, 2 curses and 1 black sun for 2 negates and 3 nihil spellbombs. i kept his yard empty and lich from resolving, he got titan'd to death.
Round 4 - 2/0 Mono black infect
game 1 i landed double curse on him turn 5 and 6.before that i was just hitting all my counters. he just scooped. Game 2 i board out 2 Doom blades and blue sun for 1 curse, 1 black sun and 1 tragic slip. again resolved curse to shut down his inkmoths and 1/1 infecters. i landed a liliana shortly after when he had no creatures. he scoops again.
3-1 4th place, coulda done better had i done decent round 1, but hey, thats part of the game!

( Dungeon Geist - underrated )
I've been trying to revive my old U/B infect deck and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? Built this one using some suggestions one of my friends. My sideboard hasn't been sorted out yet, so it's just whatever was within reach that I figured would be decent in my meta. I haven't been playing in about 2 months due to finals/vacation, so I'm a bit out of the look on what's good and what's not.
When I play it, it doesn't feel like there's enough filtering, so I get stuck with tons of mana or no mana at all. Other than that, it played fairly well against my crappy WRR deck (koth variant). Seems like it does much better against aggro decks though (my meta is full of aggro, U/B control, and green heavy wolf-run). Doesn't seem like it'd fair to well against another U/B deck due to the filtering issue.
true, but how man ppl are still running token decks? as of now 60% of competitive players are running u/w delver. makes curse of deaths hold and massacre wurm champ cards.
and why is everyone md tribute to hunger? is thrun that much trouble to where u cant bsz?
i see some sb spellskite, and it bothers me a bit. worst case is against solar flare, but even then it takes a doomblade or snapcaster swings. great against most of the current meta.
ok.. last 4 pages have been a snapcaster debate. i think everyone is getting far off topic. snapcaster belongs in control because he is the best utility for blue. accept it it or dont.
So this is what i ran last nite at FNM. went 4-0 and got 1st. Went like this.
Round 1 2-0 R/B Aggro
he got mana screwed game 1, not much of a match. all he did was burn me some.
game 2, i got the dream hand. he drops stromkirk noble and passes. i drop bird and pass. he swings in with noble and drops a silly vamp for 2 cc. i drop geist. turn 3 he swings again with all, i take it and he passes. i drop angelic destiny turn 3 on geist and swing for 10, he scoops.
ROUND 2 2-1 U/W AGGRO
pretty tough matchup here since i got the mana shaft game 1. he gets me by dropin sphinx and gideon and such. game 2 and 3 after board, he stood little chance. i drop 2 crusaders and 3 garruks and bring in another slime ( for his inkmoths ) 2 Dojs, batterskull, and wurmcoil. for the most part it was thrun winning it for me.
ROUND 3 2-0 MONO BLACK INFECT
didnt need to board for this match, garruk did most of the work killing off his creatures. i hit destiny pretty frequently too so first strike wouldnt let him get in.
ROUND 4 2-1 RDW
pretty rough match. game 1 he takes it. phoenix, koth, stromkirk, burn, ect. game 2 i board out sword of body and mind, acidic slime, 3 garruks, 2 beast withins, 2 Gideons. i bring in wurmcoil, batterskull, 3 doj, 3 timely reinforcements and 1 Oblivion ring. i pretty much stomp him out the next 2 games due to lifegain and drawing into sword of war and peace. thrun + destiny is pretty hard to deal with

The deck curve is really low, so it gets moving quick. I have successfully killed 3 people by turn 5 with this.

game 2, i got the dream hand. he drops stromkirk noble and passes. i drop bird and pass. he swings in with noble and drops a silly vamp for 2 cc. i drop geist. turn 3 he swings again with all, i take it and he passes. i drop angelic destiny turn 3 on geist and swing for 10, he scoops.
ROUND 2 2-1 U/W AGGRO
pretty tough matchup here since i got the mana shaft game 1. he gets me by dropin sphinx and gideon and such. game 2 and 3 after board, he stood little chance. i drop 2 crusaders and 3 garruks and bring in another slime ( for his inkmoths ) 2 Dojs, batterskull, and wurmcoil. for the most part it was thrun winning it for me.
ROUND 3 2-0 MONO BLACK INFECT
didnt need to board for this match, garruk did most of the work killing off his creatures. i hit destiny pretty frequently too so first strike wouldnt let him get in.
ROUND 4 2-1 RDW
pretty rough match. game 1 he takes it. phoenix, koth, stromkirk, burn, ect. game 2 i board out sword of body and mind, acidic slime, 3 garruks, 2 beast withins, 2 Gideons. i bring in wurmcoil, batterskull, 3 doj, 3 timely reinforcements and 1 Oblivion ring. i pretty much stomp him out the next 2 games due to lifegain and drawing into sword of war and peace. thrun + destiny is pretty hard to deal with
