I pop in and out of the game, which makes for some interesting breaks in my decks and collections. But, honestly, if you don't feel like playing it, then just put the cards down, and go swimming, or play pool, or something.
As a new player and getting started with primarily revised, and then with fallen empires (because it was cheap), I enjoyed Fallen Empires a great deal as a newer casual player to the game. Comparatively however, I didn't much care for Homelands. Just a personal preference thing I guess. Both sets have a couple of decent tournament cards, but at the very least, Fallen Empires was criminally overprinted. Not that I ever complained about getting $20 booster boxes of Fallen Empires at card shows I went to back then ;).
Orgg did find its way into a few very competitive decks, being relatively undercosted, and capable of doing damage.
It's ridiculous to suggest building a deck out of purely Fallen Empires or Homelands, they were expansions and not intended to stand alone (as you noted, which makes me wonder why you brought it up at all).
Okay so it seems like a few people have faulty memories, here's the actual chronology:
November 1994 - Fallen Empires released
April 1995 - 4th Edition released
June 1995 - Ice Age released
July 1995 - Chronicles released
October 1995 - Homelands released
February 1996 - First Pro Tour (5 cards from Homelands requirement)
I'm unable to find a reference for when Type 2 was sanctioned by Wizards exactly but this post at the Dojo suggests that Type 2 was being played in May 1995 and this post notes that by February of 1996 "a number of top players in Type I moved on to Type II" which wouldn't be worth mentioning if everyone already playing Type 2 was a given, therefore it's reasonable to infer that Type 1 was the most popular format until that time.
The Pro Tour has nothing to do with type 2. The first type 2 tournaments happened between the Dark and Fallen Empires - I know because I played a channel/drain life deck that used Dark Heart of the Woods.
The Pro Tour was just WOTC's way of sanctioning a championship. It probably kept Magic alive during some very lean years.
And there are many expansions that you can put together a stand alone deck with. Ice Age, or Zendikar.
You'll pretty much be stuck with Goblins (because Goblin Grenade gives you some sort of firepower)
Thalids work too, but, only with Fungal Bloom.
But, realistically the set could never stand alone. Although at the time, it did offer some possibilities - like Breeding Pool with Lord of The Pit.
Homelands is possible to build a deck off of, but, realistically, it would be so bloody slow, it would be nearly impossible to play. (just try to hard cast a Baron Sengir)
And Type 2 most certainly was developed back then. Whoever told you Type 1 was the most common format back then lied. Most stores embraced type 2 because it encouraged sales.
I've been playing most formats for quite a while (I know Modern hasn't been around long, but I played Extended). Legacy is somewhat knew to me, but I have competitive decks.
No, I don't have any credit left. He gets to keep the credit and gives me the PROMO. I don't mind; he's the person who won and I'm glad there's someone to use my extra decks.
The thing about MM is that I don't NEED any cards. I have everything I need for Modern, except some decks that I have no inclination of playing (Affinity). I just love playing the Limited format of MM.
Then play the format. It won't be around much longer.
I'm mad because they have a big MMA tournament happening tomorrow, but, I have to work. It would have been fun to draft MMA, but, I just won't have that option.
I can see that argument, yes, but I also think that vintage is stagnating as it is. Thus change is needed, and it must be change without changing the format idea, that of allowing most cards in existence. I do think that restricting the allowable restricted cards is a step in the right direction, plus you can play with the restricted list more in that way, making people actually make choices when designing a deck, rather than just auto-including the power 9 plus tutors...
There are a lot of vintage decks that don't just run the power 9 plus tutors.
My old vintage deck only had 3 moxes and an ancestral recall, but, it was an aggro based deck.
It did pretty well, but, I sold most of it off 10 years ago, because to improve it, I would have had to spend a crapload of money, which just wasn't an option.
So I concentrated on Legacy instead (Although I can turn most of my legacy decks into Vintage by just throwing in a few moxes)
I did say that, because it would make for less of these threads during rumor season which I'm all for. But again, what does free speech and the constitution have to do with websites about magical cards? You aren't really under the impression you had freedom of speech here to begin with, are you?
How does one sidestep a completely irrelevant response? Or was your constitution nonsense supposed to mean something? EDIT: I just noticed you're in Canada, so I guess I understand why you don't get it. Not that all Canucks don't (most Americans don't either), just that it's probably easier
Enough with the off-topic stuff. No, you are not just grumpy, you are just impatient. You don't know enough about the set to form a conclusion
pls
If you didn't want a thread about this, a sane, rational person would not have posted in it. They would have moved on to another post.
And since you're racist against Canadians, then, please feel free to delete your posts.
So far this feels very underwhelming for a 20th anniversary set. WotC should have taken the opportunity to print some iconic cards that haven't seen print in forever.
Thats what I was hoping for too. The 20th Anniversary should be epic.
So, at work, you lose your rights, because you work for a private firm?
Try that argument with a constitutional lawyer. You always maintain charter/constitutional rights.

No, you're just being impatient. We need a rule that prohibits these type of threads until a set is completely spoiled. Downside is they would have to find more friends to mod
Yes. Stifling speech is always the answer. God forbid anyone should have an opinion. Freedom of speech is unconstitutional!
Black/Red duals were the cheapest for a very long time until Jund came around in legacy and bumped them up a notch. Even still, they at the lower end of the spectrum. Its also not a good comparison to use revised duals as evidence since supply is guaranteed to keep them elevated regardless.
Also, I think the point of this discussion is more focused on Standard/Limited in terms of where black is headed.
Actually, they are a perfect means of calculating the metagame, because of the disparity of their prices.
And standard switches constantly. You weren't around in the days when sui necro decks were dominant.
This proves the fact that you don't read, and thus are not worth debating.
Go back, reread what I posted, and then come back, and maybe you'll have woken up.
You are a noob. I started in Unlimited.
Warning issued for trolling. -Xen
The game does take its toll.

I saw the weirdest deck combos built around it

If you have $55 in store credit, split it with the guy you loaned the deck to, and get more MMA stuff. Or just save it for when Thera comes out.

HOWEVER there are probably some on Star City. If not, maybe you can get an older female family member or friend to stitch something for you.

At least bring back pain lands.

You said there should be a rule preventing these threads, stifling free speech, which is guaranteed under the constitution.
You tried to sidestep this when I pointed it out. problem?
There should be something in there by now that says "Hey, this looks good"
But, aside from Mutavault, I'm not seeing anything that I'd be dropping into any of my decks.
Chandras Phoenix is in the set, and they have the right to use any art they like.
Yes. Stifling speech is always the answer. God forbid anyone should have an opinion. Freedom of speech is unconstitutional!
I mean, there is Mutavault, but, thats about the only thing in there to warrant consideration.
And I'm kind of annoyed that Red doesn't have a plainswalker.
I don't know, am I just being grumpy?
