Marcus: Sup? We meet again in the merfolk thread, I see
That said, pre-rotation, I can't see this being very viable (sadly). I think you almost have to run it with Delver. On the bright side, Talrand, Delver, and Augur all play well. Master plays... meh. I *do* like your idea of Cackling Counterpart. Seems amazing, actually. And, well, there is always ye olde "GA into Wurmcoil." (I think that lost its potency with the reprint of O-Ring, though).
Personally, before I try this, I'm gonna wait til post rotation, but you really can't make a deck when a whole new set will be added to the pool. I'd like to be optimistic and say we might even get new merffles, but Ravnica doesn't have merfolk on it
Maybe one planeswalked over and started a tribe...?
Actually in the Ravnica comic there's a merfolk on the 5th page I think.
And yes pre-rotation this isn't competetive but neither were illusions in m12 or vampires in m10. They all got better post rotation. I have a feeling that merfolk might be in the same boat. By making a thread and gathering ideas we can have a better handle on things when RTR is spoiled. Better idea of what's gonna work than If we started from scratch. Glad to see you in a Merfolk thread again.
Seconded. I have playtested the folk quite a bit on cockatrice the past weeks, and it often happens that, when playing Augur, I sorrily end up shuffling a Master or a Dryad away (I play UG for Dryad, Rancor and a singleton Revenge of the Hunted).
I tried removing 4 images and 4 masters, adding Delver instead, which made it way more potent, but I hated playing it (Delver + Rancor feels like cheating to me) and instantly pulled him out again.
Man, I can't wait to see what RTR will bring to the table. I really want the folk to be viable, especially now with goblins on the rise again.
Merfolk has potential for standard, but it's missing a lot of important pieces. For one, there's no good beater or 1-drop (Merfolk of the Pearl Trident is a sad excuse). Unless you manage to get two lords out, you don't have anything that can hit for more than two as of yet. You don't have Aether Vial to cheat out creatures rapidly either. The biggest problem, however, is that it's competing with a meta that can deal with it fairly easily. Unlike in legacy, you can't count on your opponents having an island in 80% of your games, and early high-power creatures that can trade or take them down in combat are common. We'll need to wait and see if RTR throws any bones this way, because it's not currently a viable strategy at all.
I can't disagree here completely. There are more viable decks. But what we are trying to do is find the most viable ways to run it.
4 Lavastep Raider
4 Subterranean Scout
4 Goblin Piledriver
4 Abbot of Keral Keep
4 Collateral Damage
4 Fiery Impulse
4 Titan's Strength
4 Dragon Fodder
4 Exquisite Firecraft
4 Hordeling Outburst
2 Act of Treason
18 Mountain
I prefer Lavastep to glory chaser because he can pump himself and I can never seem to get glory chaser through as often as I'd like.
Thanks again!

Post your deck! I'll add it I the primer.
This is more of a post RTR Deck
Agreed the deck in the op is running those.
What?
