Alright guys... tonights record was not what I was hoping for in modern, 2-2, one win was a bye so... 1-2 actual games of magic.
    Boros Control- 1-2
    Esper Control 2-1
Mono White Devotion... 0-2 (yeah...you read that right)

    *ROUND 1 BOROS CONTROL 1-2

    Game 1
Hand was gas, Im on the play, he mulls to 6, he plays a T1 Ghostly Prison... ok seems good. He draws very poorly for the rest of the game. I literally only see 2 ghost quarters, a wrath of god, some plains and that enchantment. Im curving out nicely with burn + swifty so the game doesnt last long. the ghostly prison doesn't let me flood the board and swarm him, so the wrath of god only gets a stormchaser mage.
    Sideboard -4 mutagenic growth, -1 vapor snag. + 1 negate, 2 spell pierce, 1 echoing truth, 1 wear/tear

    Game 2
He plays a needle spire tapped I think. I have a spell pierce, but im not thinking even the slightest about a freaking chalice of the void so i play swiftspear, and i have a spell pierce in hand... he plays Chalice on 1. it's pretty much done. I literally just draw nothing but 1 drop spells, it goes awhile but he loops ghost quarter with crucible of worlds and its pretty much game. Stupid horrific misplay.

    Game 3
He plays turn zero Leyline of Sanctity... mother of god...
I flood out this game, and i have burn spells that i use to burn his creatures but im not drawing anything relevant, and i cant point burn at his face unfortunately. he does wrath of god after he plays timely reinforcements, i try to spell pierce since i tapped out the turn he played timely, but he has a simian spirit guide and is able to pay for it, and wipes 3 of my creatures. his life total ends at 15 when i draw 4 lands in a row, ahd useless 1 mana spells, and he has played aven mindscensor to nuke a couple fetches and his gjost quarter action just got a whole lot better, and brimaz. he beats my down quickly with my 9 lands in play.

*ROUND 2 ESPER CONTROL 2-1 sorry for the lack of notes here

I'm sorry about this round guys, I wasn't about to write down match notes after this because it went almost to time then the match started. I loved this guys deck though, Narset Transcendant, Collective Brutality, Lingering Souls, Elsepth, Sun's Champion, ESPER CHARM.

This was a very grindy match up, Game 1 I got him when he was at 3, and im at 2 with a timely lightning helix off the top, if i didnt draw a burn spell he would have killed me with lingering soul tokens.

Sideboard- -4 mutagenic growths, -2 v snag, -1 bolt, +1 negate, +2 Spell pierce. +1 Izzet Staticaster, +1 Pithing needle, +1 echoing truth, +1 bedlam reveler

Game 2 he got me, ended with him at 5. my pithing needle a gideon was fantastic though, echoing truth his lingering souls tokens was also great, and negate hit a narset which he wasn't expecting. very fun game

Game 3 Very quick kill from me. I came out swinging with swifty and stormchaser with serum visions, g probe, and lightning helix. Mantis rider, bolt, then top deck snapcaster for the bolt finishes this game very quickly, i was able to spell pierce a collective brutality, and pithing needle his sorin, solemn visitor so he couldnt make a blocker.

    ROUND 3 WHITE DEVOTION 0-2

    Game 1
I keep a 4 land hand with swifty, mantis rider, and a vapor snag. draw a probe for the next turn. A probe reveals a thalias lietuenant, an elesh norn, a nyxthos, a knight of the white orchid, and a joruney to nowhere. I actually v snag my swifty to save it in response to journey so i can try to end this thing quickly. I flood out pretty bad here, and an elesh norn gets played on TURN 7, and i draw useless crap like 2 mutagenic growths and lands.

sideboard... no ******* clue... take out 4 growths and 2 bolts, bring in 2 deflecting palm, 1 bedlam reveler, 2 path to exile, and i think wear tear.. maybe...

This game was stupid. a MANA TITHE GETS MY MANTIS RIDER... what.. the... actual...****... also STORY CIRCLE naming red... i got him down to 3, but couldnt close out. and he pulls way forward with MASTERY OF THE UNSEEN and NYXTHOS. he gains some life and just keeps mana open to stop any red threat. i see all 4 serum visions, and 3 snapcaster mages, and use them all to flashback serum visions to find some kind of answer, just kept bottoming lands and red creatures. the mtg gods were not my friend tonight gang. he morphs A NEWLAMOG from mastery and proceeds to exile the top 20, and he also has a brimaz out, and then i just scoop. I know that was stupid, and i shouldnt have gotten mad and quit, but i forgot about the deflecting palms in my deck. even if i drew it, he was gaining life every turn with his mastery and kept just getting more creatures and life. this game was over long before i quit i feel like...

    So analysis...
-I hated mutagenic growths this night. I almost was ready to take them out as soon as i got home. When i won, i won without them, and when i drew them they were all terrible times.

-So i think i will have around 8 open spots after the ban takes effect lol

-Im not sure if i played the last round right with those visions and snapcasters, but i had no idea how to play against that deck at the time.

-Against the boros deck i did not see a single snapcaster, which sucked.

-Spell pierce was good. when it worked i felt great bringing it in, negate did good, and Pithing needle was actually very good, i was happy to see it everytime. echoing truth was great. these cards are not going anywhere.

Cards im considering in some fashion or another for the 75

as you see there is a LOT to consider and think about lol

the future version im thinking of having 2 bedlam revelers maindeck, so thoughtscour would not be the worst to consider if i go more of a burn route, will gladly take sugestions folks Smile enjoy the read!

Also im considering apostle's blessing some form to help protect my creatures, especially from fatal push. not a full 4, maybe 1-2 and possibly adding in mishras bauble or manamorphose

Im going to modern tonight to relive the glory days once more before the ban takes hold lol

Edit- people are also suggesting thoughtscour to replace it. I wouldn't mind it either, as it synergistic with Reveler and Snapcaster mage if i wanna target myself.

Hi all! My name is Ian Andrew, I'm the one who had the 15th place finish at GP Dallas. So happy to have found this thread. I'm always looking for new ideas and to discuss the deck with others that may have other insight on different lines of play or ideas on card selection. Really cool to see people dedicated to a color combination as fun as this one.

Welcome Andrew! It's great to have ya here!
How did you like the jeskai's charm main and how did your sideboard feel? Is there Anything you have changed from the gp decklist?

Hey gang. I have been absent for quite some time. Glad to see all the action in the thread though. I have done a lot of testing recently.
    I played 4 games against:
-Grim flayer jund 4-0 no sideboard
-Bant eldrazi 2-2, won 1 pre, 1 post sideboard, I mistakingly brought in spell pierce, dont do that against eldrazi, it's not good lol also 1 match i drew 9 land and not much else, then scooped to him having a handful of awesome eldrazi cards for time sake lol
-U/R Kilnfiend combo 2-1 regular round of magic, I kept a questionable hand game 2 and he got me t3 easily.

Notes about the matches will be in here. They might not be super detailed, but if anyone is curious, here ya go.

    Flayer Jund:
-Respect Discard. Make sure you aren't leaning on one certain card t1/t2. Too much discard will gladly poke holes through your hand. First game I was hit with a Iok and a TS turn by turn, but I still won that match.
-1 play I remember specifically, He attacked with a 6/6 raging ravine and a kalitus, traitor of ghet, I could vapor snag either one, decided on Kal due to the lifegain, and I ended up winning the game precisely at the right damage. That raging ravine hit me 3 , but I knew that Kal was coming down so I held my vapor snag. I also drew 2 lightning helix this game which helped prompt me to this decision.

    Bant Eldrazi:
    1. This match up feels much worse for me, pending what I draw at what time. For craps and giggles, most of the time i didn't bolt the t1 noble hierarch and most of the time it didnt really hurt me at all. T2 eldrazi skyspawner was never that scary, and i always had a vapor snag to answer his token which was really nice.
    2. Drowner of hope never meant end of game for me. There were numerous times it was just him stalling to find better things, some times it worked wit hreality smasher, others it didnt and i ended burning him out anyways.
    3. Deflecting Palm is amazing against them. 8/8 to 9/9 eldrazi due to nobles? no problem, take 9, thanks Smile lol

Heres my list. Not as aggro as the Goblin Guide build, but I honestly think this deck has some chops without it and prefer this build right now.

    1. The reveler is a flex spot. I am not sure if I like him or not, but I do like having a prowess threat such as himself. He has come in handy in most situations, I would say after seeing him in about 6 games, He helped me win 4 of those. One I was stuck on lands and the other I was dead before I could cast him lol
    2. I put a 2nd basic island in the deck as a concession to blood moon strategies, but it may turn into another fast land if i see it too much. The 20th land feels right through so I will stay at 20 lands.
    3. I LOVE Vapor Snag. It is SOOO good. Seriously.
    4. The 4th probe I don't miss. I already tax my life total enough as is, and I rarely ever not see at least 1 probe a game.

I have notes about sideboard but my kid is crying, so I have to go for now lol update later with other notes!

I agree with you drinkhard. Always fight infect outside of combat. I always take a few lumps before I act because I'm waiting until eof or on upkeep.

Don't let a bad day get ya down. Definitely take the time to reflect on deck build and decide how to improve to your gameplan.

I agree with the learning to play By Situation vs On Curve.

Our deck really does not want to tap out if we can avoid it, I do it for my Planeswalkers but i generally have an answer to a creature the following turn and there isn't many spells that i worry about. For us in modern since we do not have that free counterspell in the form of Force of Will like our Legacy counter part we need to make sure we can protect the little amount of threats we have. It may seem appealing to jam our creatures if we have them but then we are left wide open.. We can no longer control the board or what the opponent casts, we have left ourselve vulnerable for a 2/3 or 4-for 1 in the form of a board wipe, and if we are facing something like land destruction or prison decks are loose our resources.

Personlly i think most of our lists should not have more then probably 2 threats on board at a time due to our limited amount of creatures, the only time i can see wanting more is if we are running a Hyper aggro list where we could have 2 Swiftspear & Delver on board by T2 and deal 11 dmg with 1 Probe and a Mutagenic.

Outside of our obbvious plays of T1 delver we almost always play "off curve", we know our Snapcaster's are at least a T3 to generate value, I don't normally cats Pyromancer until T3+ unless i can generate value with a Probe on T2 and even then this can be ify. I have slammed a geist on T3 though but this is because i have either A) probed first and know a Board wipe isnt coming, or B) i know my opponent does not run Boardwipes.. in the cases where they do (I.E our UW control player) my geist is generally not cast until way late in the game as i want him to stick.

I believe Curbros has said this before but our deck is probably the hardest to master and this is a good reason why, we want to be aggressive, while also remaining in control requiring us to read the situation and know when to turn the corner.. this is truly what tempo means.

Lets not forget that there are very different builds between you and I though. I don't mind playing on curve. Having a swiftspear into stormchaser with G probe into another chaser or mantis rider is pretty damn good for me lol

It's all about what we are playing against. I also don't miss Delver, not a single bit lol Delver is too unreliable for me. You can optimize your deck to the tippity top for Delver, but when it doesn't flip, the game plan changes dramatically even if it's only the 2nd turn. I was tired of that. My edh decks are meant to have fun with variance, not my modern deck lol

Also... yes.. that sideboard definitely needs some work XD but thats why we are here Wink lol

So after 2 months on Boros, I'm back.
I wanna revive the Rifles. As much as I love Boros, I miss my Geists and Stormchasers. I miss Bolt-Snap-Bolt and having Serums to help fix draws. And I miss this forum. Wink

Any ideas on how to make a burn heavy Jeskai Prowess deck viable again?

    -Gofy

Read the last few pages. We have been cooking some good things up and there have been a few jeskai lists popped up in the last couple tourneys with promising finishes.
Burn heavy shouldn't be difficult at all. You could drop the curve down. Run swifty and delvers, stormchaser probably, bedlam revelers, and lots of instant stuff. Lava spike, boros charm, hell maybe even a few rift bolts. Very streamlined.

Also as of now, jeskai prowess is definitely viable. We are on the radar for sure

One thing that I think we should talk about is the importance of playing on curve vs playing what's most correct for the current situation.

Last night when I was facing against Affinity. I had 1 Stormchaser mage, 1 vapor snag, 1 lightning bolt, and 1 Mantis rider, a Sacred foundry and Spirebluff canal in hand, with a steam vents in play. Now I could play either land untapped if i wanted, jam chaser followed by rider. What I decided to do was play sacred foundry tapped and wait.
This allowed me to play the following:
-Answer his steel overseer on his turn with v snag.
--Play Mantis Rider, 3 in the air with a blocker held back since he has vigilance
-He plays something, not sure what but it wasn't a cranial plating lol
--I play 2 Stormchaser Mage in this turn, flyin in for 5.
    - irrelevant what he plays now, I know I should have this.
-- I play lightning bolt, mutagenic growth, swing for all that damage 12 and proceed to win harshly lol

Now had he drawn cranial plating I still dont think I was losing this game. Granted not every situation will break down like this, but I think it is important for everyone to always remember that what may look like the obvious answer may not be the correct one and visa versa.

I think one of the most important aspects of this game is to know when the crank the pressure, vs when to hold back and wait for a better opportunity. Again not every situation will break down this simply, but practicing this will make you a better player guaranteed.

Did you have problems activating colonnade or has it ever been an issue for you because it enters the bf tapped?
I guess you are running 19 lands, but still. 5 mana is a lot to pay, I consider you are playing the deck more burn-ish, tapping out on your turn to get through dmg with your prowess creatures but how often do you want to activate colonnade to get in dmg? Most of the time we have better ways of utilizing our mana.
I did run fumarole for some time but I wasn't really impressed, it wasn't as big of a hindrance as many think but I didn't activate it very often and even 4 mana felt much at times.

I haven't tested this at a legit modern event yet. So this is only playtesting against my brothers affinity deck a bunch of times.

Entering the battlefield tapped for me hasn't proved any negative issue thus far. I draw enough lands at the beginning to have a vapor snag, bolt, swifty, to where if i have to take a turn off, I already have interaction either on the board or in my hand, so it doesn't hurt me.

I don't consider my list burnish though. I am running some cards that can burn if i need to take that approach.

Activating colonnade is a last resort for me. I don't even consider it a game plan until I have at least 5 lands. Wandering fumerole even though it is a manland is a very poor comparison... NOTHING can compare to a 4/4 flying vigilance lol There seem to be a lot of blockers on the ground. Fumerole will never be as good strictly for the flying cause.

It may seem a bit odd at first glance but with all the filter and drawing this deck can do, most games I can easily get up to 5+ lands while having plenty to do on the field or in my hand if the game stretches out that long.
I'm not expecting to activate colonnade every game. It's there strictly to feed into if i flood out or for a late game beater.

Also one thing to consider is post board, most games do slow down a lot. So colonnade will be even better post game.

I also do not recommend just jamming colonnade into any deck lol. My deck has the potential to kill before activating colonnade is even relelvant, but i like to have some insurance in case my initial plan does not work.

Alright so I got to get some testing in last night and i even picked up a copy of Elspeth, Knight-Errant before testing. All 3 deck's i faced ended up being Jank brews that easily have destroyed T1 decks at our LGS tournaments and i went 3-0 against them. Decks I faced were:

    - Kiki-Control. This deck does what it's name suggests, it controls the board till it can combo with Kiki
    - Modern Energy. Hard to explain this 1 but it's goal is Emrakul
    - Unknown name. I cannot give this one a name, it does alot of control and has an alternate Archangel of Thune combo win

Since all of these decks are jank they are not your typical lists you may find online, however i have seen these decks go toe to toe (and win) against Bant Eldrazi, Jund, Dredge, Scapeshift, Infect etc.

    Deck Notes:
It has felt more smooth and more in control with what plays i wanted to allow while still representing a very strong threat. Vapor Snag did alot of work, and it is really fun to Vapor Snag a Birds of Paradise stopping the opponents T2 play, or to snag away a Deciever Exarch when they do not have the mana to recast it after casting Kiki.
    - Mana Leak as a 2of felt nice, when i had them they did their job, they are still not as good in the late game and the answer to this could maybe be to swap them for Logic Knot.. However i think these would be best in the SB so then you have the Leak Game 1 and if your playing a deck that you know will go into the late game you know your GY can be filled making Logic Knot shine
    - Elspeth, Knight-Errant is a house, adding the Sacred Foundry helped me smooth out my mana so her double white is not that hard to get, she also makes an unflipped Delver or a late game delver amazing. Everytime she hit the board she guaranteed i wont that match.. Flying is super strong in the meta right now
    - I did not miss the 1 Gitaxian Probe either, i thought loosing 1 cantrip would hurt but it helped me with life preservation and i drew into more useful spells like the snags. Lightning Helix was the same, i did not need the 3rd in the MB, still worth i think having in the SB for decks like burn.
    - Young Pyromancer feels at home now with the revised package, when she hit the board she generated value, even 1-2 tokens as little as they seem do enough. They become a detterant for attacking, they are great getting through.. and with Elspeth they are more Delvers Smile
    - Chandra, Torch of Defiance She is still my girl. My opponent used Though-knot Seer and decided to let me keep her fearing what else remained in my hand.. I cast her following turn and killed TKS. Also her 2R mana or the exile for a shock still does enough damage. Anyone that has room for the 4CMC walkers i would say she fits better, i run 18 land and casting her is never an issue and i have never had a time to draw her and not want her. Also i had a game where her AND Elspeth were on board at the same time.. this is just fun.

There was 1 game that was odd, i didn't get any of my creature threats till really late in the game and by really late i had atleast 8 land on board and i missed lands drops a couple times, this match was still very easy to deal with, I played the counter war and won, Creatures couldn't remain on the board, i had 100% control over what i wanted to happen.

For reference the deck i was playing is below.

Congrats on the win! Super pumped for you Grin I like the changes. I always enjoyed playing with Elspeth. We told you she was good Wink lol
Good idea on adding that foundry to your list as well Thumbs Up where is your sideboard though? lol

*Preordain in modern... Infect says THANK YOU lol
They would definitely replace Serum Visions altogether. Preordain is strictly better than serum visions for sure, that is why one is banned and the other is not lol

My deck I'm currently running for Modern Jeskai. Loving this list. Stormchaser mage is gross. Last night I swung for 11 damage in one turn with 2 mages, 1 mutagenic growth and a lightning bolt.
Also, Celestial Colonnade won me a grindy game against affinity last night, and it was fantastic.

Unfortunately, Ian lost his win and in on table three to finish in 15th place. This is still the best finish the jeskai prowess/delver archetype has had in an american GP and continues the strong momentum for the deck! Soon we will probably move into the Competitive deck section instead of the deck creation section. With two jeskai prowess decks on camera this weekend at the top tables it was a very good weekend for jeskai prowess!

    Moving on up! Grin
