Nov 3, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Nixilis Wave [T2 - G/B]Right, but what you're not catching is that state based effects are checked when a player receives priority. Genesis Wave resolving includes putting everything that it can into play, after which priority is passed. Thus, Ob Nixilis and anything else would be coming into play simultaneously. Since they both actually have to be in play in order for the Legendary rule to take effect, since they're coming in at the same time as the land the triggers still go on the stack before priority is passed.Posted in: PhoenixM Blog

Oct 29, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Lavaclaw HammerWell, the number of win conditions coupled with the ability to duress their removal/counterspells (usually counterspells), and post board have a counterspell of my own that costs 1, and more selective discard.Posted in: PhoenixM Blog
It just means that my threats won't be killed/countered as often, and coupled with the burn there's a really good chance that I can win fairly easily.
Also Koth is very difficult for control to deal with, so when you can get rid of their counters and/or Hexmage (inquisition) Koth runs all over them. -
Oct 29, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Lavaclaw HammerI have considered Hideous End, but I like the 2CC Doom Blade. I have 4 Hideous End though, so it may be worth testing.Posted in: PhoenixM Blog
Something else I was kind of forced into testing was Molten-Tail Masticore...and I have to say it's really good. I may replace Inferno Titan with it (just because it's easier to get out, and it's harder to remove.)
But yeah, tomorrow will be kind of a trial by fire. Here's hoping for good results. -
Oct 28, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Lavaclaw HammerI don't think very much of R/B control. I don't think that any control, at least in this metagame, without blue is primed to succeed. I think that the best way of running R/b is the deck I made up there -- mixing aggro with elements of control to open up the field just enough to end them. It combines the explosiveness of RDW with the anti-control measures that black has in discard, control with removal, and ricochet trap as icing.Posted in: PhoenixM Blog
Tunnel Ignus may yet go for Ratchet Bomb for pesky Leyline of Sanctity users. -
Oct 27, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Lavaclaw HammerYeah, it may, but the problem is that it comes in tapped later in the game. The chances of landing a mountain in your opening hand, or on the draw, are very high. I think two blackcleave just wouldn't be consistent enough. I know that landing 3 non-basic is bad, but 90% of the time Dragonskull Summit will be coming in untapped anyway. There's such a small chance of getting that opening hand (with only non-basics.) But I'll consider it.Posted in: PhoenixM Blog

Oct 26, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Lavaclaw HammerOh definitely. I try to test as much as possible using different places (MWS, Real Life and Magic-League specifically.) I'm not saying it's the best deck in Standard (at least, not yet ), but so far in testing it has been a beast. I've faced a lot more than what I mentioned, but I only mentioned the competent decks that had competent players as legit testing. Like I said I'm going to be taking this deck to gameday this weekend and seeing how it goes.Posted in: PhoenixM Blog
I think being familiar with the deck is important. Even if I went on a losing streak now, or ended up not doing well at Gameday from what I've seen so far I think I would try and tweak the deck, or just play it more to become more familiar with it. Like some of the game losses in my matches were just due to keeping bad hands that don't benefit the deck at all (for example once keeping 4 land 2 Inferno Titans and 1 Goblin Guide, dunno what I was thinking there.)
Here's hoping for the best. -
Oct 25, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Lavaclaw HammerI can honestly say after testing that this deck is a house. Early aggro really wrecks the ramp decks, and makes it easy to finish them off even after they've got going. Control is hosed (I'm 3 - 0 against U/B control, and 2 - 0 against U/W(r) control.)Posted in: PhoenixM Blog
Honestly I haven't lost with this deck yet, and it works really well. I'll be piloting it at gameday this weekend and we'll see how it works against everything else. -
Oct 15, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Nixilis Wave [T2 - G/B]Actually hitting multiples off the wave isn't necessarily a bad thing since they all come into play simultaneously with the land, all of the triggers would go off first (so say you had one on the field, waved into 2, and also hit 3 land you would deal 21 damage before the Legend Rule came into effect.)Posted in: PhoenixM Blog
That said, Wave is a may and if it's not an optimal situation I would only play one Nix. -
Sep 30, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Destructive Force [G/R/U - T2]Why are you using fetches? They're definitely not worth the use (statistically speaking, unless you get them in numbers the deck thinning is negligable, but the damage isn't.)Posted in: PhoenixM Blog
I run them as 1 ofs because they aren't 'necessary' but they're ok to get. I was thinking about raising the Khalni Garden count to 2, and the Halimar Depths count to 2...but I'm a little hesitant. I do run 3 Raging Ravines now because it's another wincon. Thing is that I prefer to have lands that don't CIPT.
Anyway I'll probably be running this list for a while yet until the metgame settles and we know what we're dealing with. It's still going strong. -
Sep 29, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Destructive Force [G/R/U - T2]Posted in: PhoenixM BlogI don't understand how you justify a single shot draw effect as being a better fit in a deck which has a relatively high chance of drawing nothing but lands/ramp and expensive spells. Given all your shuffling effects, Jace can basically dig your entire deck in a couple of turns, and you have the removal and blockers to protect him.
Because shuffling your deck doesn't guarantee that you are going to be changing the cards that you look at. You still have the same number of lands, and whatnot. Also, you are relying on other cards to make Jace's brainstorm better. Even assuming that Jace gets the shuffle mechanic in, it takes him 2 turns at least to do what Foresee does in one. Even still, 6 cards in 1 shot is better than what Jace can do in 2+ especially since by the time you play Foresee chances are that you've already done some thinning of the deck yourself. I run 6 Titans and 4 Destructive forces. The chances of my not running into one of them with a Foresee is very slim. By the time I've run Foresee I've gone through at least 10 cards, and a 1/5 chance is not a bad one (not to mention the chance of hitting another foresee to do the same thing the next turn.) -
Sep 27, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Destructive Force [G/R/U - T2]Thanks for the comments. Here's what I think:Posted in: PhoenixM Blog
I guess I was just trying to justify not having Jace by saying I couldn't really protect it -- but the reality is that I just think Foresee is a better fit for the deck. Digging 6 cards deep is nothing to scoff at, and I think Foresee as a card is generally undervalued.
Again, Inferno Titan just seems to me like the better option post DForce as a finisher than Primeval, he also helps a lot against aggro, and kills faster than any other Titan. The problem with Primeval is that I just don't see it being needed. If you throw a DForce you should already be in a position where you can ramp back up on your own, have Garruk out, or have a finisher like Frost/Inferno...and in that case Frost/Inferno both get the job done better than Primeval. What do you need the land for when you should be swinging for the kill? Nothing should be able to out-ramp you minus Valakut, and they don't have the removal for your Titans so you should always have something sticking before DForcing. Not to mention Inferno can make the difference between an opponent's creature surviving a Force and not surviving when it attacks post Force.
Also my only change post Scars so far is to insert 4x Naturalize somewhere in my sideboard, 3x Pyroclasm, and change my distribution to 2x Sylvan Ranger and 4x Explore. -
Sep 24, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Mimic Control [W/U] Post Rotation T2Well Elspeth is pretty counterproductive to the deck -- she destroys everything including the deck's centrepiece Mimic Vat. Not to mention Gideon protects Jace, you, and destroys creatures which is vital for the Vat.Posted in: PhoenixM Blog
Sun Titan is good, but again it just isn't worth it when you have better creatures to use in the deck. If I have to choose between Wurmcoil, Sun Titan and Grave Titan, the white one will always be at the bottom of the list (at least for this particular deck.)
I haven't really run into any mana issues yet -- I figure that with Wall of Omens and Jace I should be drawing enough to not have to worry about it. On top of this I believe that Fetchlands aren't really necessary because I do actually need a lot of mana anyway for most of the stuff in the deck to work properly.
I do have a topic up in the Standard Creation area go check it out. -
Sep 17, 2010PhoenixM posted a message on Tempest U/R CounterBurn [T2]Oh hey! Cool sorry I didn't see your response.Posted in: PhoenixM Blog
Ultimately I think I ended up dropping the deck because of the problems that you mentioned. It's kind of slow, and it folds pretty hard against early aggro decks. I really was just trying to find a way to use Magma Phoenix.
I'm trying to develop a Red/White deck now with similar principles...maybe try a White/Red/Blue deck or something. We'll see! - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
Regardless I had a lot of fun and that's what's important. I also think Hero of Bladehold might be my favorite card ever made.
4x Signal Pest
4x Goblin Guide
4x Accorder Paladin
4x Mirran Crusader
4x Hero of Oxid Ridge
4x Hero of Bladehold
4x Lightning Bolt
4x ???
2x Elspeth Tirel
2x Mimic Vat
Dernerner...
What are your experiences with the Heroes? Never got to test Hero of Oxid Ridge.
Divinity of Pride
Since you can use white OR black to cast this card...can it be put in a deck that is red and black? I'm not sure if because you can choose to only use black to cast that it can count as a mono-black creature.
4x Etched Champion
4x Steel Overseer
4x Memnite
4x Ornithopter
Spells
4x Lightning Bolt
4x Galvanic Blast
4x Tempered steel
4x Glint Hawk Idol
4x Origin Spellbomb
3x Mox Opal
Land
4x Arid Mesa
5x Mountain
11x Plains
4x Ricochet Trap
3x Kor Firewalker
4x Revoke Existence
4x Brittle Effigy
Play around it. Like someone said, Ratchet Bomb is always good, or trying to counter their creatures to the point where they only have one creature on the board and then bolting it in response to them sacrificing the quest. If they have more than one creature that doesn't work, but I also don't run into a lot of quest decks. I would imagine that a lot of decks have issue with a turn 1 quest if they have a good hand.
I agree with you and that's why my list splashes red to deal with aggro better so it has a better average match-up against the whole field. I've yet to lose more than one match at an FNM or TNM when playing my U/r deck. My biggest problems are actually with Eldrazi Green.
Oops. I actually already run tec edges. I don't know why I forgot to put them in. I run 3, and I'm also running 4x Scalding Tarn and 4x Mountain. I was just throwing my list out there quick. I also like the idea of Spreading Seas sideboard, but it seems almost too slow for Valakut, no?
Also I posted it here because it's pretty much MUC with a slight red splash. I updated the list.
2x Wurmcoil Engine
3x Sphinx of Jwar Isle
Spells
4x Preordain
4x Lightning Bolt
4x Mana Leak
4x Stoic Rebuttal
2x Cancel
2x Deprive
2x Mindbreak Trap
3x Jace's Ingenuity
2x Volition Reins
2x Ratchet Bomb
1x Elixir of Immortality
Land
4x Scalding Tarn
4x Mountain
1x Halimar Depths
1x Mystifying Maze
3x Tectonic Edge
2x Dread Statuary
10x Island
4x Pyroclasm
4x Ricochet Trap
2x Mindbreak Trap
2x Ratchet Bomb
3x Brittle Effigy
Honestly it works well; my toughest match-ups are the usual for control, but even then I find that as long as I am extremely patient I can pull them out often enough.
I've been considering doing away with Volition Reins/Wurmcoil Engine to bring in more counters or something.
Thoughts?
Funny, because Brazilians tend to whip Americans, and everyone else, pretty nicely.
