Back on the topic, I'm sorry to see KERS coming back this year. FOM go on and on about wanting to keep costs down, and then screw around with things like this. I don't feel like it adds much of anything to the sport. We'll see.

I hope to see Schumi do well. I'd like to think he's got at least one win left in him.

You don't need an anti-Day of Judgment card. You just need to control yourself when playing out your creatures. After you've played out a couple of threats, look at the board and ask yourself, "If he has a Wrath, would he use it next turn?" If the answer is "yes", you may want to hold back on other creatures. Play out just enough so that he needs to Wrath, and no more.

Real anti-Wrath cards are things like Squadron Hawks and Hero of Bladehold when you play them smartly. Playing things like Silence just makes your deck worse.

Winston drafting is what you're looking for. Here's an article that tells you how to do it.

The last race of the F1 season is November 27. Formula 1 races also take place all over the world, which is a little bit harder to coordinate. If the police and military in Las Vegas were shooting protesting civilians, there's probably a good chance that their race would get postponed, too. Nascar races get canceled for RAIN, for crying out loud. In F1 you just change your tires.

And it isn't possible to have one of these lap-long side by side battles that you're so enamored with. In F1, you see, the courses have turns. You won't be familiar with those, but they make completing a lap rather more complicated than driving around the inside of a bowl for 400 miles.

Nascar only has so much overtaking and side-by-side racing because they have constant cautions that bunch the field back up, never letting them spread out the way they do in F1. If F1 races had full course cautions every 5 laps, it would look a lot more like Nascar. It would not be an improvement, however, in my opinion.

Personally, I like seeing a little more bleed between blue and black. It's just my own opinion, but it's always seemed to me that blue and black have much less in common than other allied color pairs.

And, as has been said, these cards are all pretty terrible apart from the tapper/pinger in limited. It's not like they're printing a blue Lightning Bolt or Naturalize. I think it's fine to give the boundaries a little push once in a while. Magic evolves. This isn't anything too drastic.

I figured with Infect decks causing problems in Standard and other formats...

Citation needed. Where are infect decks causing problems? Infect is far from overpowered in standard right now. It's barely even playable.

If it's a problem in EDH, then that's a problem for the EDH designers to figure out. Magic wasn't designed to be played that way, and some things that work fine in real Magic are obviously going to behave differently in casual, player-invented formats. That's not a problem to be solved by printing cards.

  • posted a message on why did people hate Coldsnap?
The only thing I hated about Coldsnap was that it cut short the time that we could have been drafting more Ravnica/Guildpact/Dissension. From the time the whole color pair "guild" system was announced I couldn't wait until the third set to come out so we could draft the whole thing. Then stinking Coldsnap came out in July stole away two months that we could have been drafting full Ravnica block. One of the best limited formats ever, if not the very best, and it gets prematurely replaced by a pretty poor one.

It depends what you want it for. The "semi-random" cards contain a number of staple commons and uncommons like Lightning Bolt, Divination, Doom Blade, Mind Control, and the like. If you already have that stuff covered in your collection, you may not be getting much out of this.

The toolkit is great, in my opinion, for someone who is coming back to the game after being away for a while. With just the contents of this box a person could make one or two decent standard decks that you can play at an FNM or around the kitchen table. Obviously they're not going to be tier-1 competitive decks, but what you can make from this box is going to be stronger and far more focused than a typical pre-con. A good foundation to build on.

Ok. The reason I asked is because I ran it for a while in a white control deck, and it was great to stall a T4 BBE, or a T1 steppe lynx. It allowed me to get defenders online in time so I didn't have to worry about dying until then. I did have it SB, not MD because it was specific, but I thought it had a lot of possibilty in a control setting. Thanks for the info Smile

To expand on your example, if you use Silence to stall their Bloodbraid Elf by one turn, what have you gained? You're now a card down, while their card is still in their hand ready to go next turn, and you still have to answer it. Wouldn't you have been better off if that Silence had just been an actual answer to BBE in the first place? Especially against a deck like Jund where practically every card has inherent card advantage, you can't afford to use cards that don't actually counteract theirs.

Stopping them from playing their cards for one turn doesn't accomplish anything for this deck in the long run. You're still going to have to answer whatever card you delayed, but now you have one fewer card with which to do that.

If you're making a deck full of creatures with +1/+1 counters, Cytoplast Root-Kin is pretty good. Plaxcaster Frogling might also be worth a look depending on what colors you're in.

  • posted a message on Combo vs. Synergy
I disagree with the requirement that it win you the game right then and there. I'd call the Reveillark deck that existed in Time Spiral / Lorwyn-Shadowmoor Standard a combo deck. Reveillark, Body Double, and Greater Gargadon comboed with Venser to bounce all permanents in play, with Aven Riftwatcher to gain an arbitrarily large amount of life, or with Mulldrifter to draw as much of your deck as you wanted. You could also of course deal an arbitrarily large amount of damage with something like Mogg Fanatic, but most people bothered with it since the other conditions were usually sufficient. These are cards that combine to perform actions that can be repeated an arbitrary number of times, and I'd call them combos, even if you don't actually win right then.

I also think saying it's "wrong" for someone to say two cards with synergy "combo well" is being unnecessarily picky. Words can be used in more than one way. The meaning is sufficiently clear.

Could it be A Wrinkle in Time? I don't remember it too well, having read it like 25 years ago, but it definitely has a brother and sister who travel to another world.

  • posted a message on What would card backs look like if they were printed today?
I'd expect them to have the good sense to use a design that doesn't have a "top" or "bottom" so you couldn't mark cards simply by their orientation.
