I know Critical Hit has a Thursday night legacy league (sadly Thursday doesn't work for me), but other then that I know of nowhere else to play in the state.

I am desperate to play some Legacy (or Vintage) and would gladly drive to any part of the state, or to the closer parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin or Illinois for anything on the weekend. On weekdays it would probably have to be within a couple hours drive from Cedar Falls.

A friend told me that they were reprinting Fact or Fiction with a red in its mana cost. I was extremely excited until I actually read the card, and now I am pretty sad.

While this may be decent enough to play in standard, and maybe even modern (though I doubt it) this spell is nowhere near the power level of FoF. FoF is so much better then this spell it is insane. Anybody who thinks this is as good as Fact, or not that much worse has clearly never played with Fact, and has no idea what they are talking about.

This card just makes me sad. I like creatures, I like aggro decks, but magic should be about more then just casting and attacking with creatures. They keep printing stuff like this and Thragtusk, where the only good answers are counterspells, then print terrible counters.

Hey man! Great to see you around here. Zoo still has legs, more so then in legacy right now, it just takes the proper metagaming and what not. It's still my pet deck I kick around, with a rdw on the side when I really need to "Be serious"

If your looking for small zoo feel however, your going to want to go with u/w/r delver. Its currently burn heavy tempo, and a little under the weather due to jund, but thats probbaly the feel your going for.

Cool, thank you. I will look into the deck. Man I miss legacy zoo, the look on the control player's face when you pay 8 life on sylvan library is priceless. Or turn 1 nacatl, turn 2 goblin guide, goblin guide.

Modern has the same problem as legacy (and vintage too really), people don't actually play it before judging it. They see one combo deck that can goldfish really fast and they assume the whole format is like that. Or they get fixated on one card that is legal in the format being "op" so they don't want to play vs it, without realizing that the format holds plenty of answers. Its just like people think all that happens in legacy is you get all of your cards force of will'd non-stop.

If people would actually play, they would see that games can be interactive, interesting and go on quite long sometimes, with many different strategies being viable.

Favorite Playstyle: Aggro, Control or Tempo, I don't really like linear combo (although I like decks with lots of synergy and interactions) and I've never been able to find success with midrange decks like Jund. Decks I've had the most success with have been legacy zoo, legacy RUG Delver and standard RDW (alara/zen to zen/mirrodin).

How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP): Local Tournaments and PTQs, I don't want to just compete, but win. If I lose I want it to be my fault for misplaying, not my decks fault for being a bad choice.

Favorite Colors: Typically Blue and Red, but I will play wherever the power is and will play any color if the deck is good.

Favorite cards: Lightning Bolt, Force of Will, Brainstorm, Tarmogoyf, Goblin Guide, Elspeth, Knight-Errant, Dark Confidant, Fact or Fiction, Jace TMS, anything that clocks fast or gives great card or tempo advantage really.

Budget/Staples Owned: I own most relevant cards in modern, and any I don't I can trade for or borrow. Any decklist recommended I can acquire.

It seems cute in goblins, but with it and thalia how good are ringleaders still hitting? I could see that being a problem.

Other then that, you gotta ask yourself, if you are using 4 mana, why is it not for Jace?

Bob is a great card, but I'm not really surprised by his decline. He is great, but I feel like black doesn't offer that much besides him these days outside of course in combo situations. Sinkhole sees no play these days and hymn is pretty down there too, why go in black when there is better removal options elsewhere and plenty of CA with snapcaster to make up for losing bob.

Everything in magic should be a trade off. You run cheap efficient creatures, you run the risk of losing late game, you run big late game guys, you run the risk of being overrun early by cheap efficient creatures. That is how it should be with lands, the more colors you run you gain more access to powerful options, but the more you should open yourself up to hate.
Right now there are also really strong utility lands in standard without a good way of dealing with them.
Personally I think stone rain would be a great reprint, or fulminator mage if you only think it should hit non-basics. But apparently 3 cost LD is "op" even though it is to slow to work in any format except standard.

  • posted a message on The Counterspelling Problem (yet again)
Standard has really bad counterspells in it, so if you don't like them, why don't you play standard? I would argue the main problem with blue decks recently was Delver, a card that breaks the color pie horrendously and should never have happened (this coming from a guy who plays it in several formats).

Counters are great, but if you can't cast one the moment your opponent casts a threat, they don't work. That is why many control decks are not mono blue, they run other colors for answers to resolved permanents, and many run 1cc black discard to disrupt the opponent's hand. They all have their advantages and disadvantages.

They also just printed a cycle of uncounterable cards, 2 of which are VERY powerful.

Also, just look at decks like legacy Maverick. That deck has no problem beating blue decks in the format of brainstorm and force of will. If you want to beat counters, load up on efficient threats, don't overcommit into any board wipes the opponent may be playing and it is very possible.

I am extremely glad about this ban. Primeval Titan was easily the most OP card in EDH, and pretty much every game I've played recently has come down to who casts him first, or can get the most out of him. The amount of resources he generates was just to good.

To all the people complaining he is banned when lots of 2 card win combos are still around, if those bother you that much, house ban them. My playgroup has house banned plenty of times. As well we have discouraged people from playing generals that kept leading to unfun games. I used to play Staxx with Arcum Dagsson or Sharumm until I realized games were a lot more fun for everybody, including myself, when I played other decks.

Prospectors seem like I good idea, I like that they defuse bridge like fanatic does as well as being able to add to the mana count if needed. I almost then want to run a one of Lightning Crafter and Kiki-Jikki, Mirror Breaker for the infinite damage loop, but that is probably way to cute.

When MM was legal, I saw some discussions about Instigator + Chrome Mox. Didn't really try as I abandoned Gobs for a while. Think i messed around with it on Cockatrice... Problems included your opponent could essentially 3-for-1 you if they StPed your instigator. (losing: imprinted card, Instigator, and wasting a slot for mox). When it worked, it worked... but otherwise, it was a flash in the pan, hit or miss. Good news was, you were able to cast warchiefs T2, Ringleaders on 3 though.

Your First Cabal Therapy is hit or miss. One time vs. Belcher I named Simian Spirit Guide on a blind therapy. My opponent was like: "LOL WTF", i got 3 of them :D... I would probably look at what kind of mana they can make, then name Dark Ritual or Rite of Flame.

TES is always a tough call.

I hear you on the potential 3 for 1, I just always feel extremely slow if I don't have lackey or vial, should I be mulling more aggressively? I'm probably crazy and wrong (I don't have very much experience playing this deck) I just really feel like I want another 1 drop. Maybe mogg fanatic...

After playing counter cat in modern, I've kind of fallen in love with GSZ, so probably 3 isn't too many Grin
I am worried that a turn 3 GSZ for a Gaddok Teeg is going to be to slow against most combos, I'll have to get my storm playing friend to play a lot with me coming up.

The only thing I really want the green splash for right now is I'm worried about people playing engineered plague again. I suppose I could run more lords, but I like having the md warren wierding and the toolbox of dudes.

Also, what is the verdict these days on a few mana accelerators and warren instigators?

(Edit): Also, when playing against a deck like TES what would I generally want to name first for cabal therapy?
