The original post's been updated with the final totals (not counting the replies from the commander homepage). I'll try to get some more detailed number crunching done in the next week or two.
If you are playing 5 color then it should be 10 shocks, 10 duals and 10 fetches. Check lands come into consideration when you are playing decks with less than 5 colors. The check lands help fill out the land roster in that case. However, in 5c, you have 10 fetches that can't grab check lands--they can grab shocks though.
For maximum efficiency I would advise 10 shocks.
I'm opposed to building mana bases this way.
Even in 5 color decks, it's unusual for the deck to need each color in equal amounts. So instead of jamming each card in the cycle, try to figure out how much of each color you need your mana sources to produce. The easiest way to do this is to count up the total number of mana symbols in your deck (including ability costs), figure out the ratio of W:U:B:R:G, and then make sure your mana sources line up with that ratio. You may need to tweak from there, based on when you need mana colors (for example, if you need green early to play ramp spells, then you need a higher proportion of green, even if it's not otherwise a common color in your deck).
@Dirty Filter: It's an interesting topic for sure... could you start a new thread with it? (It'll be a bit easier for me to get everyone's responses tallied if this thread is just generals.)

Basically, if your deck is heavy-Bant with a splash of BR, then it's possible you'd benefit more from having a Sunpetal Grove or Hinterland Harbor than a Blood Crypt.
Plus, if you're already loaded with duals + fetches, it greatly diminishes the drawbacks from the M10/Inn lands.
