All sanctioned tournaments count. Now retailers can run casual events with a 0k event rating than are more just keeping track of players that play at a store, and those 0k casual events do not count towards MPR

You cannot use Harm's Way to hurt enemy planeswalkers.

This is true, unless your redirecting a source you control Harm's Way is worthless against walkers.

    Quote from Leonyrd
You can redirect damage to the enemy player, and then assign that damage to a planeswalker.

You don't control the damage so you cannot choose to redirect it to the planeswalker.

considering from the pics of the uncut sheets given out at gencon, each FTV uncut has 8 complete sets on one sheet, so I would expect if you could find a buyer that those would go quite a pretty penny.

As far as I know almost all sealed product is worth more than whats in it, especially with older sets where there is only a few chase cards per set. Unless you open some amazing packs I would think it would be better to keep them sealed.

Can you make it so there is an option to not have foils? That small percentage actually makes a large difference sometimes when the foil is a bomb. This would make testing the set much more the way it was designed to play IMHO

The foundry over sureblade was a pick thought about for a long time. I was very happy with the foundry in the end because of the picks that came after (thresher and hulk). Also the deck seemed very tempo based which is why I took knight over mask.

Edit: I beat the esper mirror first round

    From the DCI Floor Rules:

    14. Spectator and Press Responsibilities
Spectators are expected to remain silent during matches and are not permitted to communicate with players in any way while matches are in progress. Players may request that a spectator not observe their matches. All such requests must be made through a Judge.

Spectators and members of the press who believe they have observed rules violations should inform a Judge, but must not interfere with the match.

posted a message on Swiss System Flaw
At the PTQs I get to attend, and also most of the larger events run by that organizer, they make it so that Swiss standings at the end of the final round determine prizes and the playoff is for the PT invite or trophy. At PTQs you don't really notice a difference because if your going your generally playing for the invite, but at States etc. it almost always leads to less IDs because the prize is worth more to the players than the pride of winning the event. Even with last years State Champ getting free constructed PTQs there were less draws. Why don't you try that as a solution locally and see if it works for you. At FNMs you can Top 8 for the FNM cards only and do packs based on Swiss.

    Edit:

Also on the case of bribery, the reason they do that is because it hurts the integrity of the event. You can argue that IDs also hurt the integrity, but bribery is a bigger problem because there is a possibility someone could simply buy their way to winning a tournament.

posted a message on Got ripped off by the card shop owner
The new prerelease system is in place to do exactly what you said it is doing, and that is getting more business to local shop owners. Shop owners for years complained about the fact that they lost business to larger prereleases and then sold less product during their own release tournaments, this was made to help them. Yes, it has had some negative consequences because of a few shop owners who make bad decisions, but players who report those to the DCI will help clean up the program to make it more enjoyable for everyone.

    Quote from mondu_the_fat
It isn't totally random. There is a fixed pattern regarding rares, so yes it is quite possible (with some margin of error) to tell the other contents of a box just from opening a couple of packs.

Some sites used to carry a "rare-run" list (MTGNews, for example). I don't know about who does it these days.

The rares are printed and cut on sheets, with certain cards in certain places on the sheets, and because the process is automated, all the cards get put into boosters in the same order. The boosters then get mixed as far as I know, although how thoroughly I'm not sure, so its hard to tell exactly what will come in a box, but it is usually pretty random. Also, the rare-run used to be able to be compiled from opening starters, because they were packaged with 3 rares from the same section off the printed sheet, Wizards has been differing how they package cards to make it harder to tell what the print run on certain rarities is.

    Quote from mondu_the_fat
According to SCG, rares are always equal in number (that is, there are as many steamflogger boss as there are tarmogoyf and whetwheel).

And yes, because they are printed in sheets, with the same number of each card on the sheet, there will be an equal number of all rares, with a caveat on the pre-con rares, because they are printed exclusively for the pre-cons as well as on the normal sheet.

    Quote from Jester"s Tear
Yeah, it was an Southern Hobbies direct deal.

However, that deal is one SET of Dragons per case ordered. I was under the impression that the 2/4/6 allocation to premier stores is cases of sets, meaning stores can get 12/24/36 boxes.

Of course I can't see how a store would want to be Gold level. The crap you are forced to carry and promote is ridiculous. Maplestory? Eye of Judgment? Sounds like WotC tells you that if you want to be a gold level store, you have to enter a contract that guarantees you will lose money.

My store has told customers that they can order 2/4/6 sets, thats 1 set of 15 dragons, based on their tier level. Also, Wizards tiers, when first announced anyway, was based upon the amount of product order from 3 categories, cards, minis, and books (such as D&D guides, etc.) If thats still the way it works your story doesn't have to carry Maplestory or EoJ if they don't want to.

posted a message on 2hg payout at prerelease opinions please
I know that at my prerelease they treat it as a casual event and the payouts reflect that. they are very flat with teams with perfect records getting 10 packs each (20 for 2HG perfect records) and 5 packs until they run out of product (10 packs per team for 2HG). Almost all the pods are 5 rounds, it means that for the most part you get packs if you have a winning record, and with pack rounds, you can win something even if you win only that one round, albeit only one pack.

A lot of the time the inspectors stop you because they think you look suspicious rather than anything else. If you look different than what they consider normal, and happen to have something that shows up as a blob of something in your bag, they may stop you just for that. My ex-girlfriend had blue hair, and traveled all the time, and almost every time they stopped her for inspection, just because she looked different.

Hope you come back to playing paper magic, it really is much funner than MODO.

I think that Timetwister was included in the original list because it was the only card of its kind. It had both the effect of recycling every card you had used so far and drawing you a new hand, and it was also in blue, the color that could make the most of having more answers in its hand.

For anyone interested I have been messing around with all the suggestions in this thread. I've found that I like removing the ink with acetone and then using Yare's method of making the card on MSE and then copying the picture to Word. You can then reduce the size to 2.5x3.5 in and print to a piece of paper. Then use double sided tape to tape the card to the paper on the edges and run the card through, it may take a while to dry, but the results are great.

I've had problems with DACW in the past also, whether them taking a long time to ship or sending the wrong items. The store I work for has a wholesale account with them and never has a problem, though they order sports cards instead of MTG from DA. I guess the only thing you can do is start placing orders with someone else.

Well, if you got second you should have received a card. FNM promos are supposed to go to First, Second and two random door prizes. Also, as far as rounds are concerned, you don't have to play more rounds with more people, it is just a suggested number. The TO and HJ are the final say for how long the tournament lasts, and they can cut a round if they need to due to time constraints.

At the last prerelease I went to we were allowed to change our decks after every round, which led to a lot of people changing their decks with friends help after deckbuilding. They only did this on Saturday though, Sunday was the normal registration, only change when sideboarding rules. When I asked the HJ he said they were trying it out to see if it made it funner for newer players. So definitely ask your TO or HJ about it first.

Its hard to find boxes for less than 80 anymore, I know that many distriburtors don't even sell boxes for less than 70, and although I don't know what wizards charges direct, its probably close to that for premier stores.

posted a message on Picking foils out in boosters
When foils were first introduced in Urza Block and Masques block, you used to be able to weigh the boosters to figure out if there was a foil in it, a lot of shops would do this to get foils to sell as singles to thier customers. Nowdays its a little harder, but I suspect there is a way to do it somehow.

posted a message on MTGO 8 mans payout changed (sorry, my fault)
Actually I think you can still do that, you will just accumulate tix a little bit slower. 32 tix to enter and they give out 8 boosters, at 5 tix, its still a profit of 8 tix per tourney. But Wizards also has a set up to ensure that computers using the same gateway or similiar IPs are not included in the same 8-man if they are extra players. I think they did this more to encourage more people to play the 8-mans instead of waiting to play in PEs.

Well you probably won't be able to run FNMs, because Wizards requires that to become a Premier Store, and thus recieve eligability for FNMs and other Premier events, you actually have a store. I think this may include running Prereleases, PTQs and GPTs. But they may not care for those, just that you be a Premier TO.

I think that traditional LD with Vore and Wildfire are great in standard. The best part of this is the fact that you no longer have to deal with cranial and erradicate getting your Vores. Plus you have the new Totems as alternate win conditions and acceleration.

posted a message on No more cards from MagicCorp - Wizards pulling plug
I don't see why people are so angry over this suspension of MagicCorp. When you become a premier store you sign a contract that lets your run Premier Events and buy product directly from Wizards with certain restrictions tied to those priveleges. One of those restrictions is that you not open product before the release dates. There are special circumstances, like Prereleases where some vendors get to open a predetermined amout of product early. And MagicCorp violated this agreement, whether it was explicitly for profit or not, it was still against the terms of thier contract and they are being punished like any other store that does this and has WotC find out.

posted a message on spectators noticing illegal plays in games
According to the DCI floor rules, if a spectator notices an incorrect play, he should stop the game and call a judge or other tournament official. If you are one of the players, you should also call the judge, regardless of whether it was your mistake or not. Also, if a judge is present but doesn't notice you should still point it out to him/her and let them make a ruling.

I think that the judge was completely fair in this situation. This was an error on the part of both Olivier, his opponent, and somewhat the staff. Because of this mixup, the judge probably thought 1 game was enough of a penalty for Olivier and simply gave him a downgraded warning.

I dont see why a 1/1 flyer in the guild would be bad, as Jeremy said, is WW really going to play 12 1/1 flyers? The only reason to play this would be if Frazzle starts to get played a lot, because it lets your late game 1/1 flyer through the counterspells.....or maybe its not any better at all. And what does WW cut for another 4 1/1 flyers anyway? I think that the new flying men/falcon is perfectly plausible.

Rosewater, I totally agree with you that O-Nag is some savage beats but I think right now you are either running 4x jitte yourself alongside manriki gusari or some wear away/terashi's grasp md. You only need to hit home with it a couple times to make it count but Im not sure if it is worth its vulnerability. Jitte is reaching clamp-esque numbers but in no way should it be banned or even restricted especially in block, there are just so many answers.

Don'tyou remember all the answers that were available for the clamp too? In standard there were innumerable answers to equipment and artifacts and that didn't stop them from banning clamp, so why would all the answers available for Jitte in block be any different.

I don't think they will ban the Jitte, but their decision will not be based upon the number of answers available.

I think MTGO has had an effect on the price of physical cards. Well, I got into judging after hearing the great deals you get for judging, even FNMs. But before that, I had a tough time paying for cards, and the best way for me to get them was to play in drafts where we picked rares at the end, we got a bulk discount from the store owner when we did this too, and that helped. But Magic really is expensive, and a lot of our JSS age kids have a tough time getting cards to play with.

@Locojin Why not play FoF, its a great card for control decks like wake, my version runs 4 md.

I've been working on 3Color Wake since it was legal in standard for Post Rotation Extended and I think I have an optimal build, with the cards out now, and this is my advice.

In general what about playing STE and Reach? These are both excellent card for thinning the lands from the deck and for powering out all the expensive threats. Maybe drop dragon for these? Also, Witness is wonderful for the deck, giving it the recursion of FoF, Wrath, or whatever else. And Jens is great too, providing even more thinning, and advantage when he dies. And a single Mobilization gives it an answer in the mirror, or against anything else designed to stop mass amounts of creatures once or twice.

This is from a Wizards press release issued on May 9th.

Don't know if it has been posted or not.

    Nine Is The Number!

Magic: The Gathering Now Featured In Nine Editions, Nine Languages

MAY 9, 2005 (Renton, Wash.) -- Nine is the number! Seattle-based hobby game leader Wizards of the Coast (NYSE: HAS) today announced it will celebrate the summer release of the much-anticipated Ninth Edition of its iconic Magic: The Gathering® Trading Card Game (TCG) by expanding the range of languages in which the game is published to include a ninth: Russian. Ninth Edition is scheduled for a July 27 release in English with the premier Russian-language release scheduled to hit retail shelves in late September in the Russian Federation. This release will be supported by an official launch event to be held in Moscow, as well as nationwide in-store tournaments.

Magic: The Gathering has over six million active players worldwide and that number is growing daily,” said Wendy Wallace, Brand Manager for Magic at Wizards of the Coast. “With the international popularity of Magic at an all time high, it's appropriate we expand the range of languages in which the game is offered.”

Magic: The Gathering is a game inseparably tangled with the creative independence synonymous with global youth culture. Developed by American mathematician Dr. Richard Garfield in 1993, it counts itself the first trading card game ever created - a fact recognized in 1997 when Wizards of the Coast was granted an exclusive patent on trading card games and their method of play. Featured in film, television and art, Magic has been a voice of postmodern culture for over a decade; its fantastical, otherworld settings have spawned the creative energies of a whole generation. In 2003 the Toy Industry Association ranked Magic: The Gathering among its “Top 100 Games of All Time”.

The international flavor of Magic was on hand at the 2004 Magic World Championship in San Francisco as players from over fifty countries gathered to witness 15-year old Julien Nuijten of the Netherlands win top billing. This year's World Championship, scheduled for December in Yokohama, promises to be better than ever with qualifying national championship tournaments scheduled in 29 countries from Australia to Uruguay. The ninth annual Magic Invitational, to be held at the E3 Convention in Los Angeles beginning May 17, brings together sixteen of the top Magic: The Gathering players' from nine nations with the two top contenders winning the opportunity to design a Magic card in their likeness. In addition to English and the newly added Russian language, Magic is currently produced in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese (simplified).

Ninth Edition is a 350-card Core Set for Magic: The Gathering. The set features the return of several surprising cards from Magic's rich history and sensational new artwork on many traditional fan favorites. Ideal for the beginning player and expert alike, Ninth Edition includes some of Magic's Greatest Hits.

Scrye's price guides are all based on what stores buy and sell at and beckett handles prices differently, looking at supply and demand, and what the cards are truly worth. Would you really pay $1 in Scrye for a junk rare? I thought not!
