  • posted a message on Three Things To Keep In Mind When Playing Commander
    Hello fellow Commanders!

My name is Levelten a.k.a LVXAlters and I have played EDH since 2009. Since then, I've been a huge fan of the format and I played so many games of EDH. I've faced many fellow Commanders with their own unique strategy and play style, from straightforward aggro and voltron decks to complicated combo decks and absurd chaotic decks. (Looking at you Warp World, Great Aurora, Confusion in the Ranks and Timesifter players!!!)
Despite the many kinds of commander decks and play styles, I found that the heart of commander games is the same. Unlike a 1v1 game when the goal is to win, the goal of EDH is to have a good time with your fellow Commander players!

    Wait, what?

Yep, that's right, Commander is a social format, it feels great when the table is having fun! Sure, you can win as soon as turn 4 or earlier, but I personally think there's no point doing that. There's no prize to be won, so why kill the table on turn 4? You can keep the glory to yourself, but you will leave a bad taste for the rest of the table. If you want to win on turn 4 or earlier, maybe you should check other format like Modern or Legacy ;D

    //////////

So after 8 years(!!!) of playing EDH, here are three things that I found important so you AND your fellow Commander can have a great time playing the best format of Magic The Gathering!

/// 1. Your Words Are Your Greatest Weapon ///
Unlike 1v1 competitive game when the match is usually silent with only card flicking, staring and analyzing gestures, in EDH, you should talk a lot! You can make dealings, bluffs, make someone attack other player, working together to break free from the prison deck, anything!
I found that too many Commander players keep the board state problem to themselves and getting frustrated when their deck cannot handle the problem. I always say to these kind of people, "You're not playing alone. If you can't handle the problem, why don't you ask the others? Maybe they have the answer or help you find one!"
So, once again, talk a lot! State who's dangerous, who's winning, what needs to be handled, who to take out first, if you can sweep the board etc etc. This will make the game much more dynamic and fun Smile

    /// 2. Adapt To The Metagame ///
Yes yes, even Commander have a metagame, not in general though, it's according to where and whom you play with. Each store have their own Commander play groups with their own metagame. So getting to know what your fellow Commander is playing is an advantage since you can adjust your deck to the meta.
This is probably just me but sadly, I found that many Commander players doesn't want to adapt to the meta. They just want to focus on their deck without acknowledging what their opponents are playing. Their stubbornness results in a frustration since they believed that their deck is already perfect and doesn't need change.
There was a time when the deck to beat is mana ramp deck, putting crazy amount of lands into play in just a few turns. Many people despise it, calling it unfair. Well, instead of whining, why don't you adapt? Change some card in your deck to beat the ramp strategy! You can put Ankh of Mishra, Stranglehold, Zo-Zu, Aven Mindcensor, Manabarbs and many other hate card to the strategy! For every strategy, there's always counter for that, so once again, adapt.
** On a side note I remembered back then when Azami is dominating (she probably still), people putting Choke and Boil on their deck! It was crazy but it's a good example of adapting to the meta Grin **

/// 3. Fun Of The Table > Fun Of Yourself ///
This is probably most important one. Don't be greedy and keeping the fun for yourself. Share it with the table. If you already had that infinite combo, you probably better to save it if you see the table is currently having fun and interactive game going on. Don't be a party pooper by dropping the infinite combo and end the game right away! I'm not saying that you can't do it, but it's much more rewarding to having fun games with your fellow Commander. I personally think that the only way to play out the infinite combo is when the game is already dragged for a long time or the majority of the table wants to end the game and moving on to the next one.
Winning feels great, but in Commander there's more than winning the game. Of course someone has to be the winner, but when everyone's having fun, every single person on the table is a winner Smile

    //////////

And that's it! I've always wanted to share these thoughts with other Commander players out there Grin
So, what do you think? Do you agree with my points? Do you have other perspective about it?
Please kindly leave a comment and feel free to share it with other Commander players!

inb4 Magus of the Tutor ...

Anyways, this seems like a slow and one time Wheel effect. Jace's Archivist is repeatable Windfall and barely seeing any play.
But this is nice for Red CMDR Decks that don't have access to blue!

Today I heard from one of store that their pre order from sole distributor for Fat Pack Battle for Zendikar got cut by 60% due to limited stock.

What? You "heard"? What the hell "one of store" means? And what the heck is a "sole distributor"?

Is there any confirmation from any other country ?

Well, I can answer that, if you tell us first where country are you writing from.

Troll. You are a troll. You are no giving any useful info, this is your first post (and very likely the last one). Moderators, warning me for flaming, do whatever you want, but I will report this as spam, I'm so sick of trolls here in my favorite Magic forum.

PS. And if you answer my post, you are still a troll. You will try to maintain attention to your post, troll.

This news is from Indonesia. One of my local game store announced this earlier today.

Soooo ... Any news from another countries? Especially the closest, Singapore or Malaysia maybe?

What about pre-spark walkers as the commanders? (Or maybe legends that flips into planeswalkers a-la Magic Origins? This is unlikely tho)

I mean, Wizards has been toying around planeswalkers and I think people likes it. Last commander product we get planeswalkers cards as commanders and in Magic Origins, we got legendaries that transforms into planeswalker.

I think there's a chance for this at 2015 Commander product. Either pre-spark planeswalker legends only or the transforming ones.

UW we got Sorin, UR Dack or Ral, UG Kiora ... and so on.

What do you guys think about Torpor Orb?
I've been using it for so long and it's been an important card to stop many things from happening.
I mainly use it to protect the artifacts and enchantments from Acidic Slime, Aura Shard etc
But apparently it kinda stops the opponent's wincon such as Purphoros + Avenger of Zendikar and stifles Eternal Witness from bringing back card.
And there are a lot more moments that Torpor Orb devastate opponent's gameplay since EDH has become Magic: the ETB. (Or it's just my meta?)

I also run it because I don't bring any creature with ETB effect (well, there's one Snapcaster Mage, but that's it.)
It can be tutored by Tezzeret, the Seeker too.

So yeah, it's been a great inclusion for me. What do you think?

    Hello, fellow Nekusar player here!
I've been reading this thread for a long time and really enjoyed the discussion here

I want to put my decklist up but haven't got the time yet.

For now, I'd like to know how you guys think about Havoc Festival? It's been there since I build my Nek deck and it's been amazing and fun card to play.
It negates life gain effect which this deck might be struggling against and speeds up your win.
When you're behind, it helps you to catch up or simply bring the pain to the table.

I also find on the most decklist here that bring countermagics are so few ! I'm so surprised because I think some countermagic helps you to protect your board from Austere Command etc, and can hinder your opponent's from casting their winning card like Tooth and Nail etc.

To the best of my knowledge:

    1) Yes you can set up a commander casual event but you only gain 1 point for the event so I doubt its worth it.

    2) No. FNMs can only be modern, standard, or draft if I recall correctly.

    Thanks!

So how can we set up a Casual Commander event on the event reporter? Where do we enter the participant's DCI number?

Hello MTGS! I want to ask several question about Commander and PWP.

    1. Can you increase your PWP by playing Commander? If yes, how?

    2. Can you sanction a Duel Commander event as an FNM?

Thank you in advance for the replies!

This Sliver PW idea is pretty cool IMO, imagine that Sliver PW travels across the Multiverse, learning new abilities to be shared with other Slivers.
Imagine if the Sliver PW goes to Zendikar, learned Annihilator and share that ability to other Slivers ...

Maybe someday Slivers will become a threat to the Multiverse.
