This is obviously a reference to Brine Seer, because, well, just look at this guy! he sure is confident with inspiration! 'Dark' means that card is black. The part about pain and gain is an easily recognized reference to the flavor text of Fruition. So the card is:
3B
Creature
2B, T: You gain 1 life for each Swamp on the battlefield.
1/1
The others were playable independent of anything else. This thing requires you to have boosters and that makes it unplayable in most games - even casual.
I may be wrong, but they never put cards that valuable into Duel Decks.
Is there any precedent for that? Jace alone makes up most of the price of the decks, and I think WotC is wary of printing a Legacy card in a casual product, since people will just snap it up and sell it on eBay or whatever, keeping it away from the intended audience.
Force of Will hasn't seen print for that reason, I imagine.
Avenger remains the best, to be honest. Especially for the Hydra fight, since it'd let you easily kill any of the heads.
Edit: Wait, you have to win an entire premier event just to participate? What the ****?
So only five people even get to do this? Wow. That takes underwhelming to an impressive new level.
You just have to enter one of the events to get the award.
"That's where the seventh, and final, Theros Hero Avatar will be given out. All participants in a Face the Hydra premier event will receive a copy of The Slayer"
I know from Deadpool, and I cannot see a similarity.
They should have just reprinted or made a functional reprint of Paladin en-Vec. It is a good creature that is not going to break any metagame.
"Protection from X (color)" is actually a very bad gameplay mechanic, that does not make for interesting games where anyone makes any decisions.
It completely takes combat off the table, and takes 95% of spell interactions off the table too. (Wrath effects aside)
I would be pretty happy if they printed a lot less "Protection from X Color" creatures.
Also, Protection is VERY hard for new players to understand and play with properly, it's not intuitive at all that a Protection from White creature dies to a Wrath.
I wouldn't be surprised if Springjack Pasture was reprinted over Trading Post. Standard currently doesn't even have any artifacts worthy of playing alongside Post for great profit anyhow. I doubt Theros, a non-artifact heavy block, will profit any crazy options either.
I'm betting a new Goat card.
"Springjack" is a world-specific word, (Shadowmoor) they want to avoid that in Core sets, and tend to want generic fantasy names. See Elvish Mystic Vs Llanowar Elves.
It's obviously not that powerful but I think completely unplayable outside of limited is a gross understatement. Counter-burn decks will certainly give this kid a go in standard considering they've already got a fair amount of tools
I thought it only triggered on your spells dealing them damage...being able to get 1/1s from chaining some cheap card draw spells could be sweet.
...except instead of being amazing, revered, format-defining and absurdly powerful, it'll be (*edit, read the card wrong) completely unplayable outside of Limited a mediocre to fine 2-drop?
Seems reasonable.
This isn't on the same planet as Snapcaster/Goyf/Stoneforge/Confidant.
Is that from Champions of Kanagawa?
I wasn't ready for that Brine Seer artwork.
Not if you're playing Cube!
(you use a Cube booster, then)
Why?

That said, I love the card. Simple, elegant, good stuff.
You just have to enter one of the events to get the award.

"Mirrodin," "Time Spiral" etc.
Gonna bet this is NOT a Magic set.

Country =//= Race.
Nice try though.

This guy LOVES Burn at the Stake.
