I used to play Eva Green extensively 2-3 years ago, back when Zoo and Merfolk were dominant decks. Sinkhole sucked in that era. Maybe it's better now, who knows. Then I switched over to Rock and never looked back
If I took it to a tournament today, it would probably be close to your list. Maybe -Thoughtseize for another Tombstalker.
One removal to consider is definitely that BB removal from Innistrad (I think), that doesn't target Vampires, Werewolves and... something.
Feb 18, 2013Yeah, from my play yesterday, it seemed most of my power came through 2-drops. Aside from Burning-Tree Emissary, I also had Greenside Watcher, couple of Disciple of Old Ways and some 2/1 goblin. More than enough to put extreme early pressure on my opponent.Posted in: Limited Archives
Mugging, Arrows of Justice and Massive Raid to clear the way. 5/4 swines to finish the job. I also had 2 creatures at 6 and 7 cmc slots, but those were usually overkill.
I was hoping to play Dimir, but R/G commons and uncommons seemed too good to pass up, whereas Dimir seems to have much stricter card needs.
Feb 17, 2013Ok, I won the draft playing Gruul. Seems like Burning-Tree Emissary + Madcap Skills on turn 2 when on play is extremely hard to defend from. Add Zhur-Taa Swine and small amount of removal and Dimir / Orzhov players are dead on turn 4.Posted in: Limited Archives
Feb 17, 2013Just wondering what are some of key cards for these guilds, at common and uncommon slots: Gruul, SimicPosted in: Limited Archives
I haven't had a chance to play these guilds yet. It always seems like red creatures get taken by Boros, making it unable to build into Gruul and it also seems as if there's very little good green creatures to be found.
Also, a quick insight into main strategies would be greatly appreciated.
Jan 28, 2013I went to prerelease after choosing Dimir because it seemed fun guild to play, what with Cipher and unblockable creatures. I ended up opening absolute junk. My guild rare was Whissering Madness and only other cipher spell was mill 3. I had two unblockable dudes - Keymaster Rogue, which is probably the worst of the bunch. With no mill spells, my promo card was pretty weak most of the time. I couldn't splash anything but W and even that was really weak cards.Posted in: Limited Archives
I went 3-2 but entire event was a huge letdown. My deck wasn't fun to play and from what I could see, other decks were no better. There wasn't any clutch plays / misplays. You just play your creatures and engage in combat. Huge disappointment.
Jan 28, 2013Dutiful Thrull was best card in my deck. Blocking Boros and Gruul all day long. Everything else was junk.Posted in: Limited Archives
I wish I had more than 1 copy. Still, I had it in my hand in EVERY SINGLE MATCH. Gotta love variance.
Jan 25, 2013I was gonna open a Dimir thread last night. Nice to see people's thoughts on it.Posted in: Limited Archives
To me it seems Dimir is going to be most fun to play, which is why I chose it. I'm usually more of a G/B player (Rock ftw), but I dislike Golgari's graveyard theme.
I think for Dimir, choice of 3rd color is going to be very important. I think W might be the best, seeing as it has some fliers.
And I'd think I would play promo whether I go for mill-heavy strategy or not.
Apr 30, 2012How long have you been playing for?Posted in: Limited Archives
Since Zen/WWK, but I haven't been to that many prereleases and I rarely draft.
What was your Win/Loss/Draw record(s)?
2-3-0, one win was a by. I lose R1 G1 drawing nothing but Islands while having Red cards in hand and lose R1 G2 drawing nothing but Mountains while having Blue cards in hand. R4 and R5 I had no chance. Decks I played against were simply better. My only hope for winning would be heavy screw by opponent.
What color/archetype(s) did you play?
Which card(s) was your MvP?
Which card(s) was your unsung hero?
Fleeting Distraction FOIL
What was the most powerful card in your deck?
Burn at the Stake
What was the most valuable card in your sealed pool?
Burn at the Stake FOIL
What was your biggest play?
Play Kessig Malcontents and deal 4 damage to opponent. Bounce them with Mist Raven and replay them next turn to finish him.
Which card(s) exceeded your expectations?
Definitely Kessig Malcontents. They'd deal at least 3-4 damage just upon entering battlefield.
Which card(s) fell short of your expectations?
Burn at the Stake - Even though I played plenty of humans, there was never any situation where I could safely tap out all my creatures to deal 9-12 damage. Card won me only 1 game, but it would have won me game vs. Wolfir Silverheart on board had I not started the game with 3 Islands in hand and no Mountains. Despite playing 9 mountains.
In your opinion, order the colors from best-to-worst for AVR Limited:
White is clearly the best. It has fliers, some solid form of single target and mass removal and combat tricks and it's much easier to get bombs in this color. And it has really good soulbound creatures.
Green and Red are tied for second best. Excellent soulbound mechanics, great, aggressive creatures.
Blue and Black are clearly the worst.
What are your general overall impressions of AVR?
I feel disappointed for opening nothing but crap rares. I'll be lucky if I can get 5 bucks out of cards I opened.
In hindsight, I probably should have opted for Green instead of Blue, despite having only 6-7 Green cretures. At least I opened some hate for fliers in Green which would have been useful. Top 4 at our event consisted of nothing but WRG variations and 3 of them had Moonsilver Spear. At future drafts, I'll make sure to draft at least 2 of those colors.
Apr 19, 2012Elminister posted a message on Do you prefer killing the table all at once, or one at a time?If I'm having a fun and engaging game, I will try to keep enemy life totals at equal in hopes of killing them all in one turn.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
But, if someone stepped on my toe or is playing cheesy combo / land destroy, I won't hesitate to rush them down.
Apr 16, 2012Most annoying, in following order:Posted in: Commander (EDH)
1.Mindslaver - because it comes down when people have plenty of lands in play, turns are long and then somebody hits you with this. Not only do they ruin your entire board position, but you also have to wait 15 mins for your next turn.
2. Time Stretch - might as well go home when someone plays this for same reason as Mindslaver. In 4-player game, when someone has 12 mana, turns are very long. And then someone takes 2 extra turns. I came here to play cards, not watch someone durdle around for 15 mins, recurring Time Stretch for 5 times.
3. Tutor generals - not only do they provide tutors (and CA) every turn, they make every game feel the same.
4. Land destruction - I have no problem if you destroy everyone's lands and win in next couple of turns; it's when there's nothing on board and a player casts Armageddon. It's absolutely pointless and just keeps the game going forever.

Apr 6, 2012I had a 5-2 score at PTQ. Jund Charms were in sideboard and I pretty much boarded them in for 4-5 match-ups (2 x Affinity, 2 x Boros and maybe I boarded 1-2 for Faeries). Liliana was so-so in almost every game. She was only good one game against Affinity, but that's because I already had board under control.Posted in: Modern Archives - Proven
I didn't play Fulminator mage, but I lost 2nd game in mirror because my opponent blew one of my lands and that left me with Swamp and Forest. Every other loss came from having to mulligan 2 times when on play and starting with just 1 land. If I went to another event similar to this one, I would strongly reconsider Fulminator in my 75.
This was my first Modern event (I'm a Legacy player) and it feels like Jund is a fine-tuned machine that just plays by itself. Most of decision making seems to come from fetching and tapping correct lands.
I played a singleton Faithless Looting in my 60 and it worked great! It was a total blowout in prolonged game vs. Faeries where I played Looting and exchanged my 2 lands for Tarmogoyf and Bloodbraid.
Mar 28, 2012I'm hoping for Ooze in Avacyn Restored. But Goyf definitely needs to be reprinted, along with a plethora of other cards. I bought mine for less than 40$ a piece 2 years ago, but still I wouldn't mind seeing them drop to less than that due to reprint.Posted in: Modern
Mar 10, 2012I'll reconsider Viridian Emissary, but I really liked him in one small event I've been to. That ramp really helped against some fast decks and he would usually do 2-6 dmg to decks that hesitate to remove him.Posted in: Modern Archives - Proven
What are most popular sideboard option for Twin, UR Storm, Melira and UW Tron ?
Mar 9, 2012I'm preparing for PTQ in 2 weeks and since I have all the expensive stuff, I was thinking of going Jund.Posted in: Modern Archives - Proven
Here's my, mostly untested, list:
DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards Creatures:
4 Dark Confidant
4 Bloodbraid Elf
3 Kitchen Finks
4 Viridian Emissary
4 Lightning Bolt
Sorcery and PW:
4 Inquisition of Kozilek
2 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Liliana of the Veil
1 Overgrown Tomb
1 Stomping Grounds
1 Blood Crypt
4 Verdant Catacombs
1 Marsh Flats
2 Dragonskull Summit
1 Rootbound Crag
2 Woodland Cemetery
1 Treetop Village
2 slots are still open (was thinking Blightning, Jund Charm or Faithless Looting). Sideboard is work in progress.
Just for reference, here's some of the decks I might be up against:
Feb 23, 2012Elminister posted a message on Statistical Analysis of Highly played Legacy CardsTime to get rid of my Confidants while they still hold valuePosted in: Legacy (Type 1.5)
Feb 22, 2012I used to punish players who played Sundering Titan with Gruesome Encore. Considering I almost always have Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth on the field, I would take out at least 4 of their lands, slap them for 7 damage and get rid of that thing for good.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
That card was also good vs. various other creatures people like to recur: Titans, Revelliarks and other stuff.
Unfortunately, now I don't play Black anymore
Feb 22, 2012Posted in: Rumor Mill ArchiveQuote from Shed
Tarmo is good, but not that good,I can block it all day with anything,he does not have any evasion, and I can deal with it using Doom Blade,Path to Exile,Lightning Bolt,Unsummon,Beast Within...
This is exactly the reason why this card hasn't been banned. Dealing with 3/4 or 4/5 on turn 2 is a lot easier than dealing with 3/3 on turn 1.
Feb 13, 2012Elminister posted a message on [M13] Magic 2013 Baseless Reprint Speculation ThreadI'm betting on Dark Confidant. He seems fairly balanced for T2, seeing as even Modern and Legacy decks don't use him much any more.Posted in: Baseless Speculation
Dec 2, 2011If I played Liliana, I would board her out vs. Zoo. 3 mana for edict effect, that is most likely going to hit Noble Hierarch, doesn't seem good. Her other abilities are irrelevant in this match-up, unless you for some reason enjoying discarding cards from your hand.Posted in: Modern Archives - Proven

5. Vendillion Clique

1. Pernicious Deed
3. Onslaught Fetchlands
4. Accumulated Knowledge
5. Some form of non-basic land hate (Wasteland works too)
Oh, and Force of Will and Hymn to Tourach, but that's never gonna happen.
Nov 20, 2011It's the same reason why no-one likes being Mindslavered - these type of cards are cast in late game where turns can take a long time and when someone casts Time Stretch or Mindslaves you, it seems like it takes 30 mins to get to your turn.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
Nov 8, 2011I think one, however improbable, solution would be to print Brainstorm for every color, but restrict it to 4 copies per deck. I realize this is highly unlikely to happen, but I like Brainstorm and appreciate it as a card that reduces luck and rewards good decisions, even though I don't play blue. It's a really powerful card and perhaps all colors should have access to it.Posted in: Legacy (Type 1.5)
Nov 2, 2011Stupid3494, that's a nice list. What would you play in place of Punishing Fire if not playing combo with Grove ?Posted in: Modern Archives - Proven
I've been playing Rock in Legacy for ages and I'm thinking of making something slightly more aggressive for Modern. Jund seemed like obvious choice. What are it's good and what are it's bad match-ups ? How does it fare vs. Zoo and Affinity ?
Also, do you think it's possible to make a mana base with fetches, only couple of shock duals and rest with basics and Core set duals? I've been working on a mana base with this mix and it seemed fine for the most part.
Sep 20, 2011I really don't know what you're talking about. Have you even played Legacy before Mental Misstep?Posted in: Legacy (Type 1.5)
Go to http://www.thecouncil.es/tcdecks/metagame.php?format=Legacy and check if combo dominated in any given month.
And then check last 3 months and tell me what 4 decks you see showing up everywhere.
I hate combo just as much as you, but there's no evidence that combo is going to rule with MM's ban.
Sep 8, 2011That's what happens when there is no Wasteland or Force of Will. Even if certain combo pieces get banned, people will find new card interactions and new combos. Is Modern going to need a 2-page long banlist ? If so, something else is the root of the problem...Posted in: Modern Archives
Aug 21, 2011Even if, say shock duals, were reprinted in future set, how would that lower their price? Any of the modern "staples" would be heavily played in Standard and that would just further increase demand (and price) for those cards.Posted in: Modern Archives
Format is already becoming as expensive as Legacy was when I first started playing it (1,5 years ago).

Jul 14, 2011One card to consider when building Nath is Triumph of the Hordes. After you've discarded everyone's hand, this card will most likely kill them in next turn (and spare them the misery of being at mercy of a top deck for many next turns).Posted in: Multiplayer Commander Decklists
Jul 12, 2011I have a bad habit of letting people live with few points of life. It always backfires. Last game (4 players), my friend was at 3 life and I could've finished him off with Treetop Village. Well, on his turn, he cast Acquire, took my Lord of Extinction and used Swords to Plowshares on it. Eventually, he won that game.Posted in: Commander (EDH)
At least it was damn funny. I don't care much for winning in EDH, but I've been merciful to someone countless times only to have that person win.
Jul 12, 2011Elminister posted a message on [[Primer]] Riku of Two Reflections - Born of the Gods Edition (post #1595)I tested this general for a bit with incomplete list and it seems that at 5 mana, he is a bit overpriced for what he does.Posted in: Multiplayer Commander Decklists
Also, what are good red choices for this type of deck anyway? I've only played B/G generals so far and just glancing at top 50 red cards list, it seems like Red hasn't got anything going for it...

I played G/U (new Garruk) with mini red splash for 2 Incinerates as creature removal since I didn't get any Ice Cages. I got stomped by Grave Titan equipped to new haste boots, but other then that, deck performed nicely.

What cards are generally considered good? Of course, if I open a crazy mythic, I'll build a deck around him, but usually I'm not that lucky.
I'm guessing fliers are good and creatures with hexproof?
Jul 7, 2011Here is deck I've been playing last couple of months. I've been to 3 "bigger" Legacy tournaments (for my country, it's considered quite big) sporting 55, 36 and 34 players. First 2 tournies, I ended just out of Top 8, with maybe 1 point missing. This weekend, I finally managed to place 3rd and win a Tundra.Posted in: Legacy Archives
I won versus BW Deadguy Ale, UW Stoneblade, Merfolk, 4-color CounterTop, Rock (Top 8). Round 6 was ID with Maverick player (a friend of mine) who eventually placed 1st. I lost to Goblins in 2nd round and Merfolk in Top 4. All wins and losses were 2:0 (heh).
It's also the list I take to weekly local Legacy tournaments (10-15 players, most with full competetive lists)
DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards Lands: 23
1 x Swamp
1 x Plains
1 x Forest
1 x Bojuka Bog
1 x Horizon Canopy
1 x Maze of Ith
4 x Marsh Flats
4 x Verdant Catacombs
4 x Wasteland
3 x Scrubland
2 x Bayou
4 x Dark Confidant
4 x Tarmogoyf
4 x Knight of the Reliquary
4 x Swords to Plowshares
4 x Vindicate
4 x Thoughtseize
4 x Hymn to Tourach
2 x Gerrard's Verdict
Artifact / Enchantment: 7
3 x Mox Diamond
3 x Sensei's Divining Top
1 x Pernicious Deed
2 x Duress
1 x Pernicious Deed
1 x Maelstrom Pulse
1 x Nihil Spellbomb
2 x Diabolic Edict
2 x Krosan Grip
3 x Engineered Plague
3 x Extirpate
Bojuka Bog in mainboard is great for KotR decks. It didn't do much this weekend, but generally it's been really good for me.
I tried various other cards in mainboard - Elspeth, Green Sun's Zenith and some other. GSZ in particular didn't do much for me and I didn't notice much of a difference with other cards either. GSZ's power lies in getting those silver bullet cards and we don't have enough open slots to run those. If you like GSZ, Maverick is better choice (that deck won this tournament).
Sideboard was designed to be as flexible as possible. This is why there's cards with more than 1 use. For example, Diabolic Edict serves as standard creature removal and is always boarded in place of Gerrard's Verdict versus creature based decks, but it's also priceless against Emrakul and Progenitus. Maelstrom Pulse replaces Vindicate in most creature match-ups and serves as another solution to Jace, etc.
Extirpate is a card I've played for long time in my sideboard. It's a mediocre card at best. Reason I use it is same as above - unlike Tormod's Crypt or Leyline of the Void, Extirpate can be used to fight combo and control decks. For control, idea is to get rid of Jace, as it's one card that can turn over game.
Jul 5, 2011Here's how I would board, though my sideboard is very different:Posted in: Legacy Archives
UW Stoneforge/Batterskull Landstill : -3 Mox, -2 Deed; +3 Extirpate, +2 Krosan Grip
Bant NO / NO RUG - Gaddock is ok I guess; -2 Qasali Pridemage
BUGstill - -3 Mox, -1 StP, -2 Deed, -2 Qasali, -Maze of Ith; +3 Extirpate, +2 Thrun, +2 Krosan Grip, +2 Gaddock Teeg
Junk - perhaps Thrun in place of Deed and Extirpate instead of Mox; usually more creature removal is better in this match-up
Merfolk – only more creature removal helps here, Thrun is too slow imo
Goblins – only card worth a sb slot for Goblins is Plague
Dredge - you have plenty of dead cards here; Extirpate and Gaddock could go in; Hymns out; Vindicate is usually too slow, but can kill your own creatures to remove Bridges
Zoo - 3 Leyline of sanctity seems lackluster vs. Zoo, especially Big Zoo which is popular now-a-days and runs less burn; again, more creature removal helps here
Burn - -2 Deed, -1 Dark Confidant, -2 Vindicate; +2 Gaddock (though not all that needed), +3 Leyline
TES - -3 Swords to Plowshares, -4 Vindicate; +2 Cannonist, +2 Gaddock; +3 Leyline or Extirpate
Specific help needed on my sideboard and if there are other cards I should consider putting in my main or board.
Personally, I wouldn't run white Leyline. It's just not needed. Only match-up where it's good is Burn and we can already win that. Diabolic Edict has served me well so far. It's good vs. mirrors and various other creature decks and it can even help vs. Progenitus / Emrakul.
Also in your experience with UW Batterskull landstill and NO decks whats my best play against it?
I tested thoroughly vs. UW SFM decks. Mystic and equipment weren't much of a problem, it was always a resolved Jace that turned the game around. Perhaps Thrun makes a difference, but I am yet to playtest that card.
For Natural Order decks, your best hope is to prevent NO by hand disruption and remove any green creatures. Of course, it's no easy task.
Should I play 2-3 GSZ instead and run pridemages in board?
I'm not a huge fan of GSZ in Rock. I tested it a bit and didn't notice any difference. Certain match-ups got better while others got worse with GSZ. We can't afford to run silver bullet cards like Maverick since Rock lists are tight as it is. I don't play Qasali and I never missed him. Vindicate and Deed is more than enough to take care of any permanent.
Jul 2, 2011Tommorow I'm going to a big Legacy tournament with Rock deck. This is 3rd such tournament in my country and on first 2 I barely slipped out of Top 8.Posted in: Legacy Archives
Meta is very diverse (last time I played vs. Lands.dec for example), so I need to tune my sideboard as best as possible. There's always some tribal (last tourney I played vs. combo elves twice). From my regular playgroup, there's BUG Landstill, Maverick, Burn, Faeries, Rock / Junk variants. Dredge and Merfolk are always to be expected. I doubt there's gonna be much combo, perhaps a single TES / ANT. Plenty of people are packing Rock decks and there's even Enchantress deck. I expect at least 3 Landstill variants.
My mainboard is the one from primer, except for Bojuka main in place of Karakas. I was thinking of following sideboard:
DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards 2 x Duress
3 x Extirpate
3 x Engineered Plague
1 x Pernicious Deed
2 x Krosan Grip
1 x Maelstrom Pulse
2 x Diabolic Edict
1 x Nihil Spellbomb
I would like at least 2 Chokes in my 75.
Any ideas ?

Basically same thing that is done if an opponent targets something with Eternal Witness and you remove it with Withered Wretch in response.
