(Also, Let It Go (from Frozen) is not technically a Christmas song, but I tend to associate it with the season as well. I suppose the same can be said for several other songs from Frozen as well.)

I must confess, Frozen is actually one of my favourite movies. Top 20, for sure.

Also, I like the hippo song.

That is a strategy, but it doesn't always work out. If each other player competes against you once, then continues to compete against you (as you compete against them), they get the same amount of gold as you every time - except that one time they got 3 and you got 0. At the end of the day, there is no perfect strategy. It seems the most successful players are usually shifting alliances several times throughout the game. It's really way more fun than I ever thought possible.

I finished the first draft of my sell sheet for Merchant's Dilemma tonight. Looks pretty good! The idea with this is I send it to publishers (or hand it over in person), they read it, then decide if they want to ask for a copy of the game for playtesting. So what do you think? If you were a publisher, would you want to playtest Merchant's Dilemma based on this one page alone?

Happy to hear any feedback you fine folks have!

Not 5, no. Dominion is pretty well known to be a great game, but most haven't tried Quantum. Fantastic game. Very simple, but very deep, and plays almost like a puzzle at times.

Since there are only two left... I'm getting possession of my house next week, and it does have a large yard and is close to Nose Hill Park, the largest park in Calgary. I haven't even seen the inside personally yet! My parents and realtor took a lot of video and we just went for it blind.

And that leaves Kiku. The starry night alter is something I've had in mind for a long time, but I've never had the will to do it. Maybe that was too hard. Frown

    2) I bought a house here in Calgary with a large backyard and close to a large park.
    3) My new job at SAIT is replacing my father after his retirement, leading to accusations of nepotism.

Hello, Crafters. I'm back! Got a new job working as a welding and metallurgy instructor at SAIT, a technical college in Calgary. Glad to be back in Alberta, and I'm looking forward to the 10 weeks vacation! Point is, they don't have an internet filter. So, uh, hi!

My son is almost 5 now and loves to paint on Magic cards. I don't have any on hand that I can show off, but we've been having fun with that still.

My major crafting work recently has been on game design, actually. Like, board games. My primary project is called Merchant's Dilemma, a game inspired by the prisoner's dilemma where players choose to either cooperate or compete. Cooperation nets you 2 gold each, competition nets you 1 gold each, but if you compete while your opponent cooperates, you get 3 and they get 0. There are buildings and contract cards that change the game or give you abilities, but the core of the game is that negotiation. The game itself is way more fun than I'd thought it would be at the outset, and I'm pretty far along in it's design now after a few dozen play tests. Currently working on prettying everything up and creating a sell sheet so I can try to get this thing published.

How are you guys doing? I'm not going to go back and read the few hundred pages I missed, so you'll have to fill me in! Smile

Hill Giants are still okay in limited. Maybe 10th or 11th pick in the final pack. That might not be true for Cube though...

Also, I'm not first picking this guy if there's a JTMS alongside him, you know? You have to weigh the probability that one very good card is better than two later on. Being able to wait for signals makes him tough to pass up though...

Why wouldn't I just take the orginal card I wanted in the first place? Unless there are additional drating rules? Like could you force the person next to you to pick the card with the lowest cmc? Or they can only draft a certain color? That would jack people up. Maybe the conspiracy is in how you draft and not so much in how you play? This is getting stranger all the time.

Draft it, then later in the draft, take two cards instead of one. Doesn't have to be the same pick, or even the same pack. I'd be first-picking this guy every time.

Yeah, we've gotta get a solid foot of snow on the ground before they'll be talking about that. Mind you, that would have to be over a 24 hour period or something. We've got much more than a foot already.

That's okay though. I love the snow. We don't even get enough in this area to make good use of our snowshoes though, so I'd actually be good with even more. The wife and I took Oliver out almost-camping at a nearby provincial park a couple weeks ago. We didn't spend the night, but stayed long enough for a several hour hike on the lake (Oliver rode in a sled most of the way) and a campfire to cook our dinner and some mostly warm smores. The stars outside the city are so amazing.

Speaking of which, I actually just ordered a telescope online! Looking forward to checking out Jupiter or something. I'll have to look up when and where cool stuff is going on so I can make use of this thing.

Yeah, you don't even have to know the name in any language. So long as you can describe the card in enough detail that it uniquely identifies the card, you're good. A judge would always help you with this process.

"Meddling Mage naming that red instant that costs 1 red mana and deals three damage" is just as good as saying "Meddling Mage naming Lightning Bolt."

My Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker ran a ton of Threaten effects. Running a bunch of sac outlets gets more value from your tokens anyway, so sac'ing their guys after Threaten is just a bonus. Stealing your opponents' good EtB guys (Sylvan Primordial) lets you kill enchantments in mono-red too (by copying the Threatened guy with Kiki-Jiki).

posted a message on Defeating the Eldrazi
    Quote from BorgMan
The fact that the Eldrazi are bound to Zendikar is a Hedron thing. They can't be destroyed and resummoned because they can't leave the plane. An RFG effect would cause their whole being to desintigrate: not just their body, but their soul (as far as they have one) as well. Also, because of the Hedrons, Memnarch's soul traps probably can't fetch an Eldrazi soul (see above) either.

Okay, sure. Let's say I agree with all of the above. Do you think a simple spell like Disintegrate is going to be enough to beat them? I'm not saying that they can't be RFG'd, just that regular run-of-the-mill exile spells simply aren't going to be enough to deal with them. Three oldwalkers couldn't beat them. They surely tried a Swords to Plowshares...

    Quote from BorgMan
On a side note: what would happen if Karn would implant the powerstones into an Eldrazi? Would Glacian's essence kind of take over the body? Would it try to reason with the Eldrazi mind (as far as it has one)?

Probably they would suck the mana from the powerstones, thank Karn for the appetizer, then eat him as the main course. Not sure where you're getting the idea that the two stones have the ability to control someone's mind...

Bolas did release them, though we don't yet know why. Probably because he can dodge whatever plane they're on so long as they're running loose (so why should he care?). When he finally wants to use them, he ought to be a good enough blood mage (like Sorin) to lure them to whatever plane he wants to destroy (Kamigawa?).

Anyway, on removing from the game, the flavour is much different depending on the card. Mostly it's either because the body gets disintegrated so there's nothing left to go to the graveyard or they're sent into some kind of purgatory. I don't think RFG effects would be especially useful against the Eldrazi as far as the storyline is concerned.

It was ambiguous. I can't remember the wording (it was in the final act of the Eldrazi webcomic if you want to check), but I remember it being clear that if Ugin is alive, he's no longer imprisoned by Bolas.

EDIT: "Because I know where Ugin lays. I put him there myself, not so long ago."

Not as ambiguous as I remembered! He's probably dead. If not, imprisoned - but the way Bolas goes on to talk about Ugin's secrets implies he can't exctract more information from the spirit dragon.

Interesting question. I've never really been able to imagine an actual image. For example, I can't even bring up an image of my wife's face (whether in front of me or behind my eyes), though I could give you a detailed description. What nebulous "visual" imaginings I can bring up are clearly behind my eyes rather than in front of me, but it's always very abstract (though the thoughts surrounding the abstract visuals might be quite detailed).

Through training, I am able to "see" lines that I want to draw and imagine how they would look before putting them on paper. But I still can't just have my mind throw the entire image up for me. I have to go through the process of "drawing" those lines, one by one, and seeing how it'll look. This thread has given me insight into why I'm 100% able to reproduce an image or object that's in front of me, but completely unable to draw something from nothing. I think something's wrong with me. Storyline/game-play segregation, I guess. If I had to take a stab, the planeswalkers bring the artifacts with them and use mana to charge them, making them ready to use.

It's not that I don't think it could be done, just that we've never seen it. Dozens of references exist in MTG lore for summoning creatures. Dozens of references exist for building artifacts. None exist for summoning artifacts.

In any case, even if we did agree that artifacts are summoned, the info we've got on the Eldrazi makes it pretty explicit that they're different from anything we've ever seen. Artifacts use mana to operate (or to summon them, if you like). The Eldrazi exist outside the confines of normal mana. They're both colourless, but one is the absence of colour and the other is any colour. Does that make sense?

She screwed up. Then you screwed up. You should probably just call her and talk about why you're upset instead of turning her broken promise into something it's not. If the broken promise is the issue, talk about it. If the issue is her not contacting you first, talk about it. Maybe you should even ask her how she felt about your overreaction and talk about that too! Communication is always important, but now you're severing communication (or at least making it harder) at a time when communication is essential.

It doesn't matter who's right or wrong. Talking to a bunch of anonymous MTG players online is not going to save your relationship. Talking to your girlfriend might. Maybe you should do that if you value this girl.

Artifacts aren't the same as colourless magic. That I can recall, we've never actually seen anyone summon an artifact. They're built. To work in game they have to count as spells and use mana to cast them, but as far as the storyline goes, I don't think we can count them as colourless. At least, not colourless in the way that the Eldrazi or Ghostfire are.

Basically, I don't think artifacts would be any more effective at dealing with the Eldrazi than anything else. They're still powered by regular, run-of-the-mill mana.

Yeah, Standard is what I'm talking about. Won't see play anywhere else.

It might not see play immediately (lots and lots of removal is being played right now), but I think it'll be a heavy hitter at some point in its Standard life.

I'd been talking about how I'd thrown Homeward Path in my creature-heavy deck, which was good since my opponent was playing a deck with quite a few theft effects. Unfortunately, I hadn't drawn it yet and was bitching about that fact since I was having a hard time getting in for much damage considering he'd stolen a couple good blockers.

Finally the time came for my opponent to combo off, casting Turnabout a couple times and drawing into a Skyscribing. He didn't have enough to finish me off, but we both drew 50 some-odd cards. He mulled it over for a bit, then decided he couldn't win that turn (since I'd Krosan Gripped his Mind Over Matter), so he cast Eternal Dominion and copied it a couple times instead.

I, of course, had drawn into my Homeward Path. Whoops.

Tribute Phoenix seems decent. Vanilla 5/5 flying for 4 in red would see pretty heavy play in most metas. This is slightly worse, but I suspect still good enough. Unlike most "opponent chooses" cards, tribute is all upside. Fanatic of Xenagos will see heavy play too. He's super good.

I think you're right about Commander though, Sharpie. The ones we've seen so far are way too vanilla to make a real impact. Probably all of them will be.

Got Smash Up for Christmas. Have you played that one, Redwood? It's a pretty fun game. We must have played a couple dozen games over the few days I was at my parents' place. Picked up the expansion once we got back home and it's lots of fun too. Zombies vs. Pirates vs. Ninjas vs. Dinosaurs vs. Communist Bears! What's not to like!

So Koth is a kind of narrow-minded bigot? Using enemy's tech is something as old as warfare itself, especially if when makes sense.

It wasn't so much that Venser was using Phyrexian tech, but that he was using Phyrexian tech to create a vessel capable of spreading Phyrexian tech all over the multiverse. Koth was afraid of the potential of such a vessel, and what it would mean if his enemies got ahold of it.

I've really gotta finish that Chandra alter...

Hi Yomako! I might be around from time to time. Word on the street is the move to Curse might actually happen soon.

I miss you too, Abby! Speaking of knitting (:sneaky:), my wife also started crocheting recently, using the leftover bunch of yarn that I had lying around from when I used to knit years ago. Maybe she should join this clan instead of me. Uhh

Came in to say Happy New Year and I see we have a shiny new trophy! Congrats to everyone!

I haven't been crafting much lately. Did a bit more work on my Chandra-stealing-the-Scroll-of-Ugin alter that I've been working on since Innistrad came out. Almost done! I'll make sure to make a random appearance and show you guys when it's finished. Should be sometime late this year, I imagine. Tongue

My wife was busy crafting, though! She made a few dozen Christmas ornaments out of old toilet paper rolls last month. Sounds trashy, but they were actually really beautiful. She cut them up into 1" sections, then glued them together to make stars or snowflakes or something, then painted them a wide variety of colours and added a string to hang them. She made WUBRG ones for all our magic friends, white and blue ones for everyone else. Using full rolls she even made a 2 foot tall toilet paper Christmas tree for a friend of ours! Wish I had a picture now. The most common response was "That's really nice! What did you make it out of?" followed by incredulous looks at our response. Good times.

Yeah, the hedrons are definitely still binding them in physical form, but I wouldn't try to guess what else they're still capable of doing. Now that the Eldrazi have control of the hedrons, chances are good they're not performing their intended purpose anymore.

As for killing them, I agree that it seems impossible. Even from a storytelling perspective, a better victory would be binding them again, leaving some suspense as to whether or not they'll ever return.

It's more than just the manabonds. Chandra was extremely powerful and naturally gifted as a child, before she ascended even. Tezzeret was the same. Jace was the same. I can't think of a precise quote or anything, but it's definitely been implied (if not outright stated) that that natural talent is related to the spark.

Oldwalkers did use manabonds, but couldn't they pull mana directly from the Blind Eternities or something as well? I'm a little fuzzy on that one.

In other words, the only thing that makes a planeswalker different from a normal mage is the ability to enter the Blind Eternities and survive.

Basically true, but they are typically more naturally gifted than your average mage. Chandra's arrival on Regatha was noticed across the plane because she was so much more powerful than anyone they'd ever seen (at least, since Jaya Ballard, the oldwalker), even compared to fire mages who had studied their entire lives.

There are many others that paint a bullseye on you, but not quite to the same extent. These basically stop the game until they're dealt with. You can't say the same thing for a Mana Reflection (you'll certainly deal with it, but it's not always top top top priority).

Alot of these stories seem to be "we answered him asap and he wasn't that good." A card that says, "answer now or lose" seems pretty good to me.

Yeah, he's good. Lots of cards say "answer now or lose". It's just that most of them have a high CMC and do it on their own. Metalworker has a low CMC, but needs lots of help.

It's not quite like Rofellos. It's almost the inverse. Rofellos gets better and better later in the game, but isn't that good until at least turn 3. Metalworker is different in that early game (especially before turn 3) he's completely busted, but later in the game he's often just Palladium Myr.

I never played with him, but I did play against him before he was banned. He was never that great. He won a couple games early on, but just as often someone had an answer to the early game threat. More likely he was drawn later and made maybe 4 mana a turn on average. Still good, but I was pretty shocked when I saw the ban announcement.

What were you shooting for with these? All of them have tons of abilities, but there are a couple where one or two colours seem to be more or less left out. What is red about Ishzarule? Ackslah could be strait red/green. Why does Rivkei have Fear when he's not even black? I'm just not seeing the justification for 4 colours.

Otherwise, the power level is too ridiculous. Turn 3 Ackslah probably shuts your opponent out completely. Ishzarule goes infinite with any sac outlet. Overall, most of these are just way too potent and way too hard to kill. Removal needs to work sometimes since interaction is what makes this game fun.

posted a message on Do you think we will ever see an EDH grand prix as the main event format?
    Quote from Dresden
Probably not. Winner decided by table politics? No thanks Smile

This is the reason we'll never see a multiplayer (3+ teams) sanctioned format, ever. Tackling the collusion problem is not easy, and not something Wizards is ever going to take an interest in.

1v1 could work. Like, it's possible, but still very unlikely, especially on a GP scale, but who knows how things will change in the next few years? If EDH continues it's meteoric rise in popularity, it's not out of the question, but that's a big if. I love EDH, but there are plenty of people who don't. Of the people who love EDH, there are plenty of people who hate EDH duels, so... Unlikely.

It's funny because it obviously works best for aggro, but works the worst against aggro. Meaning your best chance to both abuse and fight against this card is to play aggro yourself. Depending on how many extra colours aggro decks can use effectively, this might shift your meta pretty heavily.

Make sure to give control something to fight it too. Faerie Conclave would work, for example.

    Now we're talkin'.

Only potential problem I see with this is that it's much better in a two-colour deck. I know you're trying to push 5-colour (or maybe 4) as an option, and this is less attractive to that deck. Good fix though.

Glissa doesn't have a snake body. It might look that way at first glance, but look closer and you'll realise that that copper coloured snake-thing is just a tube or something that Glissa is leaning up against.

These just break the colour pie way too much. Far too efficient for what you're getting in any colour other than black.

I'd be more excited by these if they each did something different. BU still shouldn't tutor, but I'd be okay with Ponder. BR could give a Shock, RG could give a Predator's Strike, that sort of thing. Basically, the Zendikar ETB lands (Teetering Peaks), but on artifacts which allow you to bend the colour pie a little further and make them a little more powerful. Could make them even more powerful if you made it conditional on already controlling a card of that colour (or maybe even on having Spectrum (right?) already).

On that note, I like what HammerandSickled was saying about having to sac them for an effect. If you make the sac effect conditional on having Spectrum, these artifacts gives you both incentive to get there and helps you manage it too!

Obviously all my examples should cost 3, which is a more reasonable price for ramping anyway.

    Quote from Guesswork
Is that a bad thing? These don't have to be high picks. They just need to be drafted and played by the players that can use them. I'd be happy if they averaged out as 6th-10th picks.

If only one deck maybe wants them (maybe no decks depending on what's being drafted), it's bad because they clog up the pack. A few cards like that is fine, but you're making a cycle of 5 commons. Opening two of these in one pack won't be uncommon and will hurt the draft environment, I think.

    Quote from Ultimoron
Could you have them similarly to the Invasion saclands? Those tap for one color, and you can then remove the counters to produce the other two colors, like this:

    Shivan Deposit
    Land - Mine
~ ETBT with two deposit counters.
:symtap:: add R to your mana pool.
:symtap:, remove a deposit counter from ~: add W or U to your mana pool.

I like this design a lot, especially considering what you've said about your set. This will be a very high pick for anyone playing the enemy triad, but a relatively low pick for anyone playing the allied pairs.

(It does ETBT, so it's not better than Mountain) Why do you need these to come in untapped?

They'd better be uncommon simply because this is not the type of card you want filling up your draft slots. Because of the sacrifice clause, these won't be highly picked except by players in at least those three colours.
