Feb 4, 2014Shriez posted a message on Launch Giveaway! My favorite card out of every card in this game would have to be Thundermare. It may not be among the best or the strongest cards, but it was the first card I ever pulled from a booster pack of Portal all the way back in 1998. I still have that same Thundermare to this day.Posted in: Announcements

1. Squadron Hawk
2. Night's Whisper
3. Bitterblossom
4. Tidehollow Sculler
5. Manamorphose
6. Smuggler's Copter
7. Nether Traitor
8. Harsh Mentor
9. Pain Seer
I wish someone would try out the set of Squadron Hawk so I can see if my results are a fluke or if it's really something to consider maindeck worthy. If we're already trying out everything under the sun is it that big a stretch to try out Hawks?
I've been giving more thought about Bitterblossom and I'm thinking of swapping them to try out Mirran Crusader. I saw someone mention that card either this page or last, I'll be trying it next FNM. I could also use help building the side deck if anyone feels like helping out. This is the list I'm taking next time.
2 Arid Mesa
2 Marsh Flats
1 Godless Shrine
1 Blood Crypt
1 Sacred Foundry
2 Canyon Slough
2 Plains
2 Swamp
1 Mountain
2 Blackcleave Cliffs

4 Lingering Souls
2 Stony Silence
2 Crackling Doom
2 Anger of the Gods
2 Ethersworn Canonist
2 Slaughter Games
1 Engineered Explosives
1 Wrath of God
Main deck I'm thinking about swapping a Lightning Bolt for a Fatal Push, Grim Lavamancer for something like Night's Whisper or Painful Truths, and a Blackcleave Cliffs for a different land. Side deck I need some work because too often I'm going against decks and only finding 1-3 cards at a time that are helpful. The decks that pop up the most are Grixis Death's Shadow, Infect, Boggles, Mardu Tokens/Control. Sometimes a deck like Saheeli Cat, Lantern Control, and Elves will pop up. The side I listed is what I'm thinking for next week, anybody got advice what to switch out?
I'm also shelving the Blade aspect of my deck. It's fun but I've been siding them out more and more frequently that I might as well not have Swords in the main and either have them in the side or out entirely. I'm thinking of going more Midrange with this for a creature lineup
4 Squadron Hawk
3 Butcher of the Horde
2 Thunderbreak Regent
1 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
1 Stormbreath Dragon
I'm debating whether I want to go for 2 Nahiri, the Harbinger and 1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn or if I want to try out something in the 3 drop to accompany Lingering Souls. I'm debating dropping Bitterblossom for Night's Whisper or removal.
Once again Squadron Hawk put in work and win me several games. Nether Traitor was a letdown, his impact just wasn't enough to justify keeping the set in the deck so they're being cut for something else.

Man what I'd give for Stoneforge Mystic to be legal again.
Overall I ended up 2-2, lost to Spike Feeder Combo in round 3 and Elves in round 4. Round 3 I got stuck on 2 lands with Sword, Souls, and Ajani in hand. Round 4 he comboed off on turn 2 and I didn't find any mass removal. I'll post a decklist and details about matches in the morning, I have to sleep for now. I can definitely say I'm digging this Caw Blade style version.

ROUND 1
Assault Formation (2-0)
Game 1 went fast thanks to turn 2 Hawk, turn 3 Sword, turn 4 Sword, turn 5 double equip and swing. Game 2 I didn't get double Sword and he was able to build a defense. Eventually he went down to Spirits and Butcher.
ROUND 2
Grixis Death's Shadow (2-0)
Game 1 turned into a race between Spirits and Hawks against his Shadow and Snapcasters. He Countersqualled my attempt to double Lightning Bolt for the win and it came down to a top decked Butcher sacrificing my last Spirit for haste and taking out his last 3 life. Game 2 Hawk put in work alongside Crackling Doom and Fatal Push for a quick win.
ROUND 3
Spike Feeder Combo (1-2)
Game 1 I kept a 1 land hand with Path, Push, and Inquisition. I didn't draw another land for 5 turns and lost. Game 1 Crackling Doom put in work and he fell to a Hawk and Spirit swarm. Game 2 I opened with 2 lands and didnt draw another for the entire game while I drew Lingering Souls, Swords, and Ajani.
ROUND 4
Elves (1-2)
Game 1 he was able to out pace my lifelink and bled me to death. Game 2 I opened Wrath of God and Anger of the Gods while he opened with 1 Forest and 1 mana dork that immediately ate a Lightning Bolt. Game 3 he comboed off on turn 2 and 3 and I didn't topdeck Anger or Wrath to save myself.
Overall I'm very satisfied with how Squadron Hawk performed and I'd say it was the MVP of the night. Harsh Mentor had the least impact of all the cards I played, Swiftspear never showed up in any of the games I played. Bad luck I guess to not see a 4 of even once. To take Harsh Mentor's spot I'm deciding whether I want a better Sword carrier in Nether Traitor or a creature that can actually block like Tidehollow Sculler.
2 Arid Mesa

3 Shambling Vent
2 Canyon Slough
2 Plains
1 Swamp
1 Mountain
1 Sacred Foundry
1 Godless Shrine
1 Blood Crypt
1 Inspiring Vantage
1 Concealed Courtyard
1 Blackcleave Clifs
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Squadron Hawk
3 Gideon of the Trials
2 Ajani Vengeant
1 Sword of Light and Shadow
1 Batterskull
4 Inquisition of Kozilek
4 Lightning Bolt
3 Path to Exile
2 Fatal Push
4 Manamorphose
4 Lingering Souls
1 Kolaghan's Command
It's an idea I've been kicking around in my head for a while, the card I'm least sure of right now is Batterskull because of Fatal Push and the 5 mana cost, we'll see how it performs though. If it doesn't perform I'll look to replace it with another Sword or Basilisk Collar or something.
EDIT
Deciding between Gideon and Batterskull or 4 Nether Traitor. Anybody got any thoughts on that?
3 Scattered Groves
4 Ghost Quarter
3 Temple Garden
3 Razorverge Thicket
2 Stirring Wildwood
2 Plains
2 Forest
4 Leonin Arbiter
3 Scavenging Ooze
3 Voice of Resurgence
2 Qasali Pridemage
4 Loxodon Smiter
2 Kitchen Finks
2 Rhonas the Indomitable
3 Wilt-Leaf Liege
1 Surrak, the Hunt Caller
3 Dromoka's Command
2 Collected Company
Comes down to 23 lands, 9 non-creature spells, and 28 creatures. I'd love to find room for another Qasali Pridemage, thinking that either a Rhonas or a Liege is most likely to get the axe. Or find room for a playset of Gideon of the Trials, I'd have to cut the Company's and 2 other spells for that. Thanks for the input.
EDIT:
Here's what I'd take out for Gideons. I'd take out 2 Collected Company, 1 Wilt-Leaf Liege, and 1 Rhonas the Indomitable.
2 Arid Mesa
2 Marsh Flats
1 Blood Crypt
1 Sacred Foundry
1 Godless Shrine
3 Shambling Vent
1 Inspiring Vantage
1 Concealed Courtyard
1 Blackcleave Cliffs
4 Gideon of the Trials
4 Inquisition of Kozilek
4 Lingering Souls
These are the cards I have available to me and quantities.
Planeswalkers: 2 Ajani Vengeant, 2 Nahiri the Harbinger, 3 Chandra Torch of Defiance
Instant/Sorcery: 4 Lightning Bolt, 4 Path to Exile, 2 Fatal Push, 2 Terminate, 4 Crackling Doom, 2 Blessed Alliance, 2 Wrath of God, 1 Collective Brutality, 1 Lightning Helix, 1 Anguished Unmaking, 1 Kolaghan's Command
Creatures: 1 Emrakul the Aeons Torn, 1 Grim Lavamancer, 3 Young Pyromancer, 4 Tidehollow Sculler
I was trying out the card to see how it felt. I like it as a 1 of, 2 showed up in my opening hand too often. I tried Young Pyromancer and the other cards and didn't like it so much. Neither did I like a 4th Bitterblossom. Intangible Virtue never felt like a dead draw, have to play more games to see if that changes.
I only have 2 copies of Nahiri and 1 copy each of Push and Terminate. If I had more Fatal Push I'd definitely run them.
Yes it is. Bogles alone has 3 people playing them and they all side multiple Leyline of Sanctity so a full set of Crackling Doom is the best thing I have against them. Blessed Alliance doesnt get around Leyline, Crackling Doom does. It also works against Infect when they're packing 4 Vines of Vastwood and 4 Blossoming Defense like the local Infect player does.
The cards I'm definitely cutting from the list are 1 Entreat the Angels and Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet. a 4th Gideon and some kind of removal like Path/Push/Lightning Helix are going in.

Biggest performers were Gideon, Intangible Virture, and Crackling Doom. Sword came in huge against Mono W Flyers and Infect. Gideon's emblem won me the match against Mono W Flyers.
I'm thinking I need to cut Entreat the Angels to 1 copy and cut Kalitas since he hasn't performed at all. I'm thinking either 2 Harsh Mentor or 1 Gideon and 1 Lightning Helix.
