Apr 19, 2017I pulled 2 copies of Entreat The Angels recently and I'm going to give them a try at FNM this week. Best case I get to miracle cast for a lethal or close to lethal strike the turn after, worst case I either pitch it for Nahiri or hard cast for an angel. Going to be using the same list as before but subtracting 1 Ash Zealot, 1 Crackling Doom, and the Aether Hub for 2 Entreat The Angels and a Plains.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Apr 15, 2017I don't have Brimaz or Garrison or I'd run them. Ash Zealot and Crackling Doom are due to decks I play against frequently here. I needed another land for FNM and the first card I pulled from my box was Aether Hub. Plan for the deck is replace it with Hanweir Battlements and add a Garrison to the deck, I'll test Brimaz and see how he does compared to Strike LeaderPosted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Apr 15, 2017Tried a list without Vehicles in it and running stronger combat creatures instead. I think it worked pretty well, ended up going 2-1 in rounds. I haven't had any problems running Ash Zealot yet and Strike Leader again came up crucial in winning a match.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Apr 6, 2017I'm going to be cutting Emrakul from my list because of performance issues. My current list runs 2 Nahiri and 2 Ajani, Removing Emrakul gives me 3 open slots, should I remove a Nahiri or Ajani to make a 4th slot for a set of Tidehollow Sculler?Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Apr 1, 2017I'm going back to a Butcher variant after playing an Indomitable Creativity build. I tried out Pain Seer, Smuggler's Copter, and Mardu Strike Leader at FNM last night. Smuggler's Copter and Mardu Strike Leader performed very well, Pain Seer was a spectacular flop and cost me the match win in the last round by revealing Emrakul. The plan now is replace the Pain Seers with more Copters, could use some feedback on my list. I'd love to keep the Mardu Strike Leaders in if at all possible.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Mar 6, 2017I got to play Ajani in round 3. He actually won me the game since we were in a top deck war. I was alternating between his +2 and his -2. I had to -2 him from the get go to get rid of a Tarmogoyf, then next turn I drew the second Ajani and his + gave me a Voice and a Smiter. In that situation he was great but I haven't been able to draw him in any other games. The only card I didn't get to try out was Rustic Clachan and it might get the boot for a different land.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Mar 3, 2017POST FNM UPDATEPosted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
I decided before FNM that the 4 Mana Tithe wouldn't be good enough so I swapped them and 1 Scavenging Ooze out for 2 Ajani Unyielding, 1 Last Breath, and 2 Qasali Pridemage
I went 4-0 at FNM, playing against a budget GB Elves, Infect, some kind of GB aggro deck, and Thopter Sword Combo.
Mar 1, 2017This is what I'm going to try out at FNM. I'm abandoning Vial, Company, and high creature counts in favor of a more control approach. Really wish G/W had more removal but I'll make do with whats available.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Side deck will have the usual suspects of stuff like Rest in Peace, Grafdigger's Cage, Thalia, etc. I tried to fit in the most effective creatures with what I have, still debating whether I want to use Liege or Sigarda or Thrun for the 4/5 mana slot or if I want to use planeswalkers.
Feb 23, 2017I would try to put in one more Thalia Guardian, 2 if you have them. Maybe try Thrun.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Working on making a less creature heavy deck and more on a control aspect. Thinking of cards like Mana Tithe and the Saffi Rallier combo.
Feb 11, 2017Got to try out Indomitable Creativity at the Modern FNM last night. I ran 2 copies and I was pleased with how it performed. Now I just need to work on figuring out when its ideal to go for the combo or to hold off another turn in favor of other spells. This is the list I ran:Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
I ended up going 3-1 in matches due to misplays on my part with Kolaghan's Command and going for the risky Indomitable Creativity play instead of a safer play in one game. I played against Junk (2-0), Puresteel Storm (2-1), Mono Black (2-0), and Scapeshift (0-2). I feel that if I'm going to side in Kambal or Canonist then I'm going to side out Indomitable Creativity. Something that came up that I didn't think of before was how Indomitable Creativity interacted with Grafdigger's Cage, it was ruled that IC would get around Cage because the creature was entering from exile instead of the library.
Puresteel was an interesting matchup, it came down to do I have removal in hand for when Puresteel or Sram showed up on the field. Scapeshift I was always within 1 turn of killing him and he was always down to 5 or less life when he fired off. Highlight of the night was getting to play Creativity on turn 4 for Emrakul. Lowlight of the night was walking into a Cryptic Command before combat and losing because of it.
Jan 30, 2017Has anyone given Indomitable Creativity a look to see if we can make it work? It's a bit heavy on the red but I think it could work in a tokens build with big finishers in the deck like Emrakul. Question then is would I run just the one Emrakul or would I add in other threats like Griselbrand or Blightsteel Colossus to have a backup plan in case I lose EmrakulPosted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Jan 5, 2017I look at Bitterblossom and Mogg War Marshal and I see a 2 mana 3 life investment to get three 1/1 flying creatures compared to a 2 mana investment for two 1/1 creatures on the ground, 4 mana if I want MWM to stick around.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Concealed Courtyard and Inspiring Vantage made their way into my deck pretty easily. I cut down the number of Blackcleave Cliffs to make room for the other fast lands, running 2 of each feels good. Fatal Push I might try over Terminate or Bolt, depends on what the decks I expect to see at the local meta.
Jan 3, 2017Tried a list inspired by immapwner's build, really liking how the deck plays with Bitterblossom and Butcher of the Horde. Was only 3 rounds but I expected as many at this time of year. I played against RUW Nahiri, Merfolk, and some kind of RU Burn deck. The list I ran was this.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Round 1 (2-0)
Game 1 Nahiri loaded the grave with Lingering Souls while Ajani Vengeant held down the threats until I was able to flying spaghetti monster him. Game 2 he Surgical Extractioned my Lingering Souls and it turned into a race of Nahiri's and my low life against my own Bitterblossom.
Round 2 (2-1)
Game 1 I got mana flooded while he stormed the field with a 8 devotion Master of Waves. Game 2 was a turn 1 Inquisition to take away his Aether Vial from a 1 mana hand and another my life against Bitterblossom after I was forced to Anger the field to stop him from killing me which cost me 5 flyers (hate Islandwalk). Game 3 was him playing a Merfolk and me killing it instantly. Game ended with a race of 2 spirits, 2 Wall of Omens, and a Shambling Vent against his 3 Mutavaults and a Harbinger of the Tides.
Rounds 3 (2-1)
RU Burn (store owner)
Game 1 I kept a hand with 5 land, Butcher, and a Painful Truths. He got all the burn in the world and killed me super fast. Game 2 I was able to slow him down with Kambal until I landed Emrakul through Nahiri. Game 3 was the only game the entire night I saw Mana Clash. I know the card is terrible but I think it's hilarious and on turn 5 I cast it. We both started at 10 life, 9 coin flip rounds later it ended leaving both of us with 3 life left. I had Kambal and spirits on the field so I knew he couldnt kill me with a Bolt or Lava Spike. Got him down to 2 life and was stalled until I drew another Lingering Souls. Highlight of the match was the 9 round Mana Clash and being told afterwards that while the owner has nothing against me personally, he was going to ban Mana Clash from all future Modern tournaments because of the damage potential. I don't really care if he does or doesn't ban Mana Clash, I finally got to play it for more than 2 rounds.
Mana Clash is going to be switched for Timely Reinforcements.
Dec 13, 2016Picking up the deck after a long time away, quite the work reobtaining the cards I used to have. I don't like playing Tokens and don't have enough of the cards to go pure Midrange, so I'm going for more Control style. Land wise I think I'm ok with what I have, but I really wish I had the funds to purchase Bobs or more walkers but I'm working with what I have.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Ajani Vengeant is a placeholder until I can get 2 more Nahiri. I'd like to find room for a Terminate/Dreadbore/Anger of the Gods but I'm not sure what spells to cut for them, though I am leaning towards cutting Liliana as there's only 1 of her. Also dont have Bob so Sin Prodder is my budget replacement.
Nov 27, 2016The Nahiri + Emrakul combo has been showing up a lot more where I play so I've changed my lineup to better deal with it. New list has been doing pretty good, only problem matchups I've had lately are Tron and Blood Moon.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Oct 18, 2016Just getting back into Modern after a break shortly after the release of Shadows Over Innistrad, haven't played any magic since then. Added some new cards to my deck, going with a more mid-rangey build because of the cards I have available. Using Collected Company since I don't have Aether Vial and cannot afford to get them at the moment. How's this list look for going to weekly Modern?Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Some notes about the list: Den Protector is there as a place holder until I get something better to replace him, maybe a Gisela? I don't know the meta now so I'm using my old side board. My budget for adding to the deck is limited, so I can't get anything more than $10.
Played at local store and went 3-0 against RWU control. Voice, Smiter, and Sigarda put in the work to secure the win.
Apr 16, 2016Don't have Copperline Gorge anymore or I'd have tried them, did remind me that I didn't try Jungle Shrine or any of the Vivid lands. EWit does have the same grave recursion, but Den Protector is a lower mana cost (ignoring facedown into Megamorph) and has the psuedo "unblockable" ability that makes it pair very nicely with Exalted triggers and Liege/Arlinn buffs. Also I can now afford to replace my set of Birds with Hierarchs so that will be a nice boost.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
As for labor unions there are in the US but Domino's doesn't have one. Night manager ignored instructions left by general manager to let me leave at a certain time because she doesn't like me and I don't like her. Don't think I'm long for the job but its not MTG related so I won't speak further on it.
Apr 16, 2016It came down to Sacred Foundry, Stomping Ground, or Game Trail. I wanted something that wouldn't burn me on entering play or over time like Horizon Canopy. The only purpose of the R/G land is to provide a way to cast Arlinn and Ajani without relying on having Oath on field.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Apr 15, 2016I finally get to play at FNM tonight for the first time in over a month, feeling like rebuilding my deck and trying out some cards from the newer sets. Got to play a few casual games with this list last night.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
In the games I played, Tireless Tracker put in a bunch of work putting out Clues so I could draw. Den Protector let me recycle Path/Quarter/planeswalkers. The biggest use I got out of Arlinn was her transformed +1/+1 and trample buff, Ajani's was his -2. If I had a Nahiri I'd remove an Arlinn for her to see how she does. Overall I personally like Tracker and Protector over Finks and Thalia.
EDIT: Didn't get to play after all because work decided my 4 hour shift was going to suddenly become a 12 hour shift. **** Domino's.
Mar 1, 2016How important is it to run discard in Mardu? I only have 2 discard cards in my deck (Inquisition of Kozilek) and I'm looking to find something else to run in their place. I don't have the funds to get more Inquisitions or Thoughtseize so I'm thinking of replacing the 2 in my deck with Plunge Into Darkness. Inquisition has been less than stellar for me because of how few I have.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Feb 19, 2016Tried playing at a different store last night, ended up going 3-0 because not enough people showed up for 4 rounds. Played against Infect, Naya Zoo, and Goblin Burn. Several of the cards I ran I'm going to replace because they didn't have enough of an impact on the game to warrant keeping them. This is the list I ran:Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
I wanted World Queller to work but he doesn't get to impact the board as much as I hoped he would. He's going to get axed in favour of more P and K, Butcher of the Horde, or Young Pyromancer. I want to find room for Path to Exile main, the cards I'm thinking of cutting is Boom // Bust despite how much I like it.
Feb 16, 2016Looked through my collection, no Arid Mesa or Marsh Flats to be found. Just 4 Bloodstained Mire and plenty of Windswept Heath and Flooded Strand. So until I get a Mesa or a Flats I've only got the 4 Mires. This is about the best mana base I can make with what I have, still deciding what else is going to make it in.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards 4 Bloodstained Mire
2 Sacred Foundry
2 Godless Shrine
1 Blood Crypt
3 Blackcleave Cliffs
2 Flagstones of Trokair (thinking these or windswept/flooded)
1 Magus of the Moon
4 Fulminator Mage
2 Blood Moon
3 Boom // Bust (only if Flagstones stay)
4 Lightning Bolt
1 Crackling Doom
1 Ajani Vengeant
I'm hoping to get my hands on KCommand and Helix at next FNM.
Feb 9, 2016Recently picked up playing Dega again after a while, been wanting to run a more land destruction based build. I want to find room in this list for 2 Bitterblossom but I'm not sure where they'd fit. List I want to run is this:Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
A lot of people here are running very nonbasic intensive decks, so I figure maindecking the Magus would be good. Is the mana destruction strategy viable or would I be better off focusing on tokens?
Jan 24, 2016True I can't do both but I won't always have Leonin Arbiter to take advantage of Ghost Quarter so I might as well give them a secondary use beyond sniping Urza lands or manlands. Plus 4 Oath of Nissa makes it easier to find the land needed for Wreckage/Displacer or those cards themselves.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Jan 23, 2016Also counters Kolaghan's Command.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Also thinking of trying out Eldrazi Displacer in place of Aven Mindcensor to see how it performs. Has anyone else been able to give it a try and if so how did it perform?
Jan 23, 2016My original plan was I thought it would be able to counter Oblivion Sower but I was wrong. Kept it in anyway as sort of a catch-all against whatever new decks people decided to run now that Twin is gone. Didn't see it in any of the games I sided it in (Deaths Shadow, Tokens, and Burn). In the past it's been best against Tokens and Infect when I didn't have a Melira. The modes I've used most are the damage prevention and the counter.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Jan 22, 2016Just got back from FNM, ran the list above but with the 4th Oath of Nissa and 2 Dawn Charm in the side instead of Crucibles. Ended up going 3-1. Definitely going to make changes to the side deck, but the additions of Oath and Wreckage are here to stay in my deck.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Round 1 (2-0)
VS Death's Shadow
First time I've seen this deck in action. Game 1 he didn't get any Shadow, game 2 topped a Path to Exile so I could swing for game.
Round 2 (0-2)
VS Mardu Tokens
I got wrecked. Lousy draws did me in.
Round 3 (2-0)
VS Kiki Resto
First game I had to mulligan down to 6, had a Smiter in hand, scryed a Smiter, and first turn Oathed a Smiter. He couldn't handle triple Smiter. Second game is where Oath of Nissa and Sea Gate Wreckage put in a ton of work, I probably drew 6 cards off SGW through the game and went through all 4 Oaths because it turned into a grind fest. Eventually I was able to draw and land a Sigarda and Gaddock Teeg thanks to Sea Gate Wreckage.
Round 4 (2-0)
Game 1 he keeps a 1 land hand and I stick a Thalia. Game 2 he needed to draw a burn spell to kill me, he didn't draw it.
Oath of Nissa is without a doubt in my mind an upgrade over Collected Company and Aether Vial, it adds so much consistency. I went down to 3 Temple Garden to make room for Sea Gate Wreckage and for the most part I didn't have a problem getting colourless mana to use it. I think for the future I'm going to cut the Kataki's and add Terminus and Dromoka's Command to better deal with creature spam and burn decks.
Jan 22, 2016Was only able to find 3 copies of Oath of Nissa so I hope someone at my local FNM has one for trade when I get there. This is the list I'm going to be using, expecting to see Tokens and Affinity for sure.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
If I can get a 4th Oath it will replace the Collected Company. If I can't I'm either going to keep Company or switch it for a Dromoka's Command
Jan 16, 2016Good riddance is my first thought, especially towards Splinter Twin.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
My second thoughts are to retool side deck for the other decks I see in my meta like Affinity, Soul Sisters, Chord, and Eldrazi.
Jan 13, 2016I need help with playing against Chord decks. I do reasonably well against most players at my local meta except for the Chord player. I even got one of the best starting hands possible last time, but he got one of his too and it beat mine. It's an Abzan Chord deck with his main win cons being growing huge with Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit/Gavony Township, infinite life with Finks, or infinite burn with Redcap. At this point I'm thinking of making my entire side deck dedicated to beating him just once.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
This is the side I'm using at the moment:
DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards 2 Rest In Peace
2 Gaddock Teeg
2 Ethersworn Canonist
2 Hushwing Gryff
1 Kataki, War's Wage
1 Fracturing Gust
1 Stony Silence
1 Engineered Explosives
I'm 0-5 against this guy, I gotta make it 1-5 this FNM.
Jan 4, 2016http://www.mtgsalvation.com/cards/oath-of-the-gatewatch/26290-eldrazi-displacerPosted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
This was just revealed, is it another contender for the 3 drop slot? I don't think getting colourless mana is going to be difficult for us since most of us are running 5 or more lands that make it, and I really like the blink effect. Save one of our creatures or effectively tap down one of theirs.
Jan 3, 2016Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
I think I'm going to get 4 of them as fast as I can. It's a slightly weaker Green version of Anticipate and I can't think of a reason to not run it.
Dec 19, 2015Normally the Dryad Arbor is a Forest, just switched it out last FNM to see how it performed (wasn't anything special). As for Aether Vial as a 2 of, I only have 2 copies so I thought a 2-2 split of Vial and Company would be the best option. Honestly I'm really liking it better than a full set of Company or Vial. Another deck that has started showing up again is Scapeshift. Sidedeck I've got what I ran last week and what I'm going to run next time.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
and this is what I'm thinking of taking next time:
Dec 18, 2015Lately I've been seeing a rise in Affinity, Twin, Soul Sisters, and Hatebears at my local shop and a decrease in the grave oriented decks. This is the list I'm going to try next week to try and be prepared for this meta shift.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Dec 8, 2015It really depends on what deck you're up against. Normally it only sticks around for one spell, usually Lightning Bolt/Path to Exile, before it dies. Or it just gets beaten down by beefier creatures.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Dec 7, 2015I saw the list a few pages back that had a focus on land destruction and it inspired me to make my own version of the deck. I'm still figuring out what works and what doesn't, I do need to work on improving my land base especially in the fetch category. This is the list I ran last time:Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
I would like to increase the Inquisition count and find room for Ajani Vengeant in the future. I only have the 1 Mire and no other on colour fetches.
Dec 2, 2015I think Vial and Company comes down to personal preference (and maybe budget). Vial is uncounterable but Company picks up to 2 creatures from the deck. I myself prefer Company for the more creatures.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Nov 22, 2015If you're insistent on having a creature that blows up land what about Fulminator Mage or Avalanche Riders? Have you considered Pia and Kiran Nalaar as an option? Does die to Bolt but gives you 4 power worth of creatures, 2 of which is flying, for 4 mana. Can also use P&KN to snipe out creatures or fling those tokens for damage.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Nov 19, 2015Just found out the local store is having a store credit tournament today where 4-0 gets $70 in credit, so I'm not going to be trying out new cards that I haven't used before. I'm going with a more traditional list this time, stuck on what to run in the side. Affinity used to be rampant but I haven't seen it in months. I have seen Dredge, Knightfall, Scapeshift, and UW Control as the most common decks with an occasional Lantern Control, Burn, and Soul Sisters.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Nov 15, 2015I think you might be referring to me as the guy exploring 4 drops unless someone else recently went on a thing about 4 drops. I had been running 3 Lieges but thought lowering to 2 and exploring a 3rd singleton might make the deck better and wanted to see how viable alternatives to Liege are. This is what I've found after playtesting during and after FNM.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Master of the Wild Hunt: Didn't have a lot of faith but thought I'd try him out anyway on the off chance he did better than expected. He didn't. The issues are that his toughness is only 3 so he's a magnet for Lightning Bolt/Helix, he either attacks or uses his ability in a turn, and he isn't an immediate threat when he lands. The fact you have to wait a turn to get the 2/2 wolf token and then decide whether to snipe out a creature or attack for the 5 damage they combined have is not something I want to have again in Hatebears.
Restoration Angel: This is actually the card I was running before Collected Company was released. I always felt that G was easier to make in the deck and weighed if I wanted Restoration as a single creature save or if I wanted Company as a swarm card. I haven't tried both in a deck but when Company replaced Restoration I never looked back. Restoration was good but I think its better in a Death and Taxes build instead of Hatebears.
Thrun, the Last Troll: It seems like this guy is always the bridesmaid never the bride when it came down to main deck choices. In a Blue heavy meta he's good but in my local meta he's never been good enough to make the 60. He's always the first card I bring in when I run into those Blue heavy decks though and unless my meta shifts to primarily Blue he's going to sit in the side deck as one of the cards that rotates in and out depending on what the deck of the week is.
Archangel of Tithes: I wanted this card to work so much but it has a few things holding it back. The biggest issue is the mana cost. When 3 of the required 4 mana is WWW that can be difficult to get with all the colourless and mono green sources we run in general. If we look at the non-white producing lands I used (4 Ghost Quarter, 1 Tectonic Edge, 1 Gavony Township, 2 Forest), we see that 8 of the 22 lands I run do not produce White mana, 36%. That greatly reduces the likelihood of being able to play her on turn 3, 4, or even 5. The effect while cool didn't feel like anything other than a "win more" effect. Being a 3/5 means she also isn't going to be going head to head with the beefy creatures that something like Smiter or Finks or Crusader or Baneslayer/Sigarda and even hope to come out ahead.
Sigarda, Host of Herons: Yes this is a 5 drop instead of a 4, but I had one in the side and figured it'd be worth trying her out in place of Master. If you can get her onto the field, she will end the game very quickly if you have any semblance of board control. Especially if you have Exalt triggers, or a Liege, or a Township on the field the clock becomes as fast as 3 turns solely from Sigarda damage. Her abilities making an enemy Liliana of the Veil more of a liability to your opponent instead of a help is huge on top of her having hexproof. Her mana cost can be a little difficult to reach and she isn't a Company target but I feel she's earned her place for consideration in the main deck.
Baneslayer Angel: Similar to Sigarda, Baneslayer will end the game very quickly if your opponent doesn't deal with her fast. Not many creatures can go toe to toe and survive against Baneslayer. The issue with Baneslayer comes down to not having built in protection via hexproof or colour protection. Can be used as an alternative to Sigarda, also main deck worthy.
Thats all the cards I got to test, I plan to test out Elspeth, Knight-Errant, Ajani Goldmane, and Hero of Bladehold next time to see how they compare to the others.
Nov 14, 2015Tried out Master of the Wild Hunt at FNM tonight, he was about as useful as a wet paper bag. There was only one time he was useful and was when my opponent had Worship and a 2/2 on the field. So the Master is going to be replaced by an Aven Mindcensor.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Nov 9, 2015I could cut a Gavony for a 4th Razorverge. As for Sigarda I've been trying to figure out what the best card for her spot is. List of cards to test so far is Elspeth, 3rd Liege, Hero of Bladehold, and Master of the Wild Hunt. Problem with Master is he dies to Bolt.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Nov 9, 2015Decided to come back to Hatebears after messing around with other decks and getting my ass handed to me repeatedly at FNM. This is the list I'm thinking of trying this Friday, anyone got any ideas of how to make it better? I only have the 2 copies of Noble Hierarch or I'd run more of them.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Oct 15, 2015Going to be running this list at FNM tomorrow if it fires off. I want to try out Canopy Vista as a replacement for Temple Garden to see how it performs.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Oct 4, 2015I want to try out Canopy Vista as a replacement for Temple Garden and possible Razorverge Thicket. Wanderer does look cool but I'd want to try and add a blue mana from Birds of Paradise or Noble Hierarch so he hits as a 5/5 for 4 mana. If I were to add blue to the deck and go Bant, I'd add Lumbering Falls in a heartbeat. 3/3 Hexproof that becomes even bigger when we have exalt triggers and/or a Liege on the field? Yes please.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Oct 3, 2015Skyhunter and Holy Nimbus I think comes down to personal preference. If there's a lot of black and red decks in your meta then Paladin en-Vec might be maindeck worthy. If Honor of the Pure isn't cutting it for you you could try Light From Within. Its more expensive but with your double and triple white mana symbols its a huge boost.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Sep 11, 2015If I was going to run a card to take advantage of what utility lands we have for Hatebears I wouldn't go for KOTR, I'd instead go for Crucible of Worlds. I've wanted to run it for a long time but it's hard making it fit when there's Path and Company to consider. I've been thinking of trying out this package at FNM to see how it fares:Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
4 Path to Exile
2 Collected Company
2 Crucible of Worlds
As for lands, I'd be running the full set of Ghost Quarter, full set of Horizon Canopy, and either 2 or 3 Tectonic Edge for the lands I want to replay with Crucible.
EDIT: I don't know if Company would be better at 2 or 3 with double Crucible, so I'm going to test with 2 first and then move up to 3 to see which runs better. Also has anybody tested out Heartwood Storyteller as a 1 of?
Sep 10, 2015So given the reveal of March from the Tomb maybe Abzan Allies is going to be the way to go. First thing I thought was comboing with Bala Ged Thief and maybe Agadeem Occultist to strip the hand and revive one of their creatures to your side.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Sep 10, 2015I think there's potential with Munda, Ambush Leader. The 4 cmc puts him in contention with the new Gideon and Talus Paladin for any 4cmc slots, and the fact that he has haste and is outside Bolt range is a huge plus. Sure he doesn't get counters but his tutoring combined with Collected Company means we should be able to find just about any Ally we need.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Sep 3, 2015I run 2 Wear // Tear, Creeping Corrosion, Fracturing Gust, 2 Dromoka's Command, and an Ancient Grudge in the side that can deal with artifacts/enchantments. People in my meta really love their artifacts and enchantments.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Aug 29, 2015I think if I were to run Champion of the Parish I'd only do it in a Hardened Scales build to make Champion more of a threat and draw removal that would otherwise go at something like Kabira Evangel or Akoum Battlesinger.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Aug 24, 2015The store I play at is giving a From The Vault Angels to whoever goes undefeated at FNM this week. Figured I'd take Allies because even if I don't win they're fun to play. This is the list I'm going to try running.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Aug 18, 2015So it turns out that the store I play at is giving anybody who goes undefeated at FNM this week or next a From The Vault: Angels. I haven't been able to get Noble Hierarch, but I've been working on a new list without any Infect cards like my last deck used in case I decide to go that route. These are my options for FNM this week.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Aug 18, 2015This is the list I've got so far. I only have 2 Aether Vial so I dont have them in my list.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
I dont know how worth it would be to run the 2 Vials I do have since they're pretty much dead draws later on. I've also been thinking of trying to make room for Ghost Quarter and Horizon Canopy but I'm not sure what I'd cut for them.
Aug 17, 2015Shriez posted a message on Allies, Hardened Scales, and multiple creatures entering the field at onceIf I have an Ally creature like Hada Freeblade and Hardened Scales in play, and I get 2 more Allies off of Collected Company, would Hada Freeblade get three +1/+1 counters or would he get four? My understanding is he'd get three counters, I want to make sure that I'm not shortchanging myself.Posted in: Magic Rulings Archives
Aug 8, 2015If I go with the Hand of the Praetors I'm thinking it'd help to try out Glistener Elf as well since Hand would make each Elf become "G: target player gets a poison counter". I'm definitely going to maxing out on Pridemage and see if I can get Hierarch. Birds are there until I can get Hierarchs in the future.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Aug 8, 2015Tried out a GWB list at FNM last night and went 3-1. Had to make some cuts to fit in the Black cards, but I like how they performed. From a normal GW build I removed Leonin Arbiter, Aven Mindcensor, Thalia, Hushwing Gryff, and cut down on Collected Company to make room for Tidehollow Sculler, Abrupt Decay, Liliana of the Veil, Phyrexian Crusader, and Skithiryx the Blight Dragon. Also had to make changes to the land numbers to fit in Windswept Heath, Godless Shrine, Overgrown Tomb, Vault of the Archangel, and a Swamp. Feels like White and Red are becoming more popular where I play, so I figured a creature with protection from those colours would do good, hence the Phyrexian Crusader pick.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
While Skithiryx was a last second addition to have another source of Infect, he put in work combined with Phyrexian Crusader and they won me multiple games by themselves. Those two were easily the MVP's of the night. This is the list I was running:
I played against UB Days Undoing combo (2-0, 1 win each by Infect and Damage), UW Control with 4 Supreme Verdict, 4 Cryptic, and 2 Wrath of God (0-2), UW Standard Control who signed up so FNM would fire (2-1, 1 win eacy by Infect and Damage), and Jeskai Tokens (2-0, 1 win each by Infect and Damage). The 2nd round matchup was the most difficult due to the aforementioned board sweepers and Cryptics. I got him to 8 poison counters both games but couldn't land that last hit to win. He also had just enough mana after double Colonnade activation to stop a miracled Terminus when he went for game. I do wish I'd ran a 4th Phyrexian Crusader and I'm going to give it another try next week to see how it performs then.
Jul 8, 2015The next time I get to play at the store I'm going to try out replacing 1 Mirran Crusader, 1 Kitchen Finks, and 1 Horizon Canopy with 2 Meddling Mage and 1 Island. The Finks and Crusader haven't been fitting very well in my local meta, and I've been wanting to give the Mages a try. I figure 1 Island is enough land wise when I have 3 Company and 4 Birds to produce mana, as well as Ghost Quarter if I absolutely need to get that Island from my deck.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Jun 25, 2015Archangel of TithesPosted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
So this card was revealed to be in Magic Origins, does it have potential to be effective in a more white oriented list? I like that can stand up to a Seige Rhino or Tasigur in combat even if it can't kill them, and 4 cmc looks appealing to me. The big problem I see is the triple white cost.
Jun 18, 2015So my store just posted that they are going to have a Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier Modern format this Sunday, I want to make sure I have as strong a deck as I can with the cards I have available. This is what my main and side boards look like right nowPosted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
I don't know exactly what I'll be fighting against, but I do have access to cards to play full sets of Pridemage, Restoration Angel, Mindcensor, Mirran Crusader, Company, Liege, and Creeping Corrosion. I do not have access to Worship, Grafdigger's Cage, Noble Hierarch, or Engineered Explosives.
Jun 9, 2015Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
I've considered it but I haven't gotten a chance to test it yet. I'd remove my single Avacyn's Pilgrim for Beast Within and see how it performs. The draw I have towards Beast Within is that it can hit lands as well, and I love me some land destruction.
Jun 5, 2015I don't think its worth completely cutting out 4 cmc creatures to run Collected Company, but you definitely have to cut down how many of them you use. I'm running 3 Collected Company and 3 Wilt-Leaf Liege and haven't had any issues with them interferring with each other. It felt like I was getting too many Collected Company in my hand at a time when i was running 4, so I dropped down to 3.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Jun 2, 2015I feel that Collected Company and Dromoka's Command solved my problems with power levels. A well timed Company and Liege are usually enough to swing past most anything the opponent has on the field. Command is a great catch-all for decks like Twin, Burn, Infect, and Tokens.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
May 30, 2015As far as basics go I would run 3 of each, 2 at the minimum. I think Sunpetal would work better than Brushland concerning life costs, but if you aren't running 4 Temple Garden then it might not be as useful as Brushland because of Brushland coming in untapped guaranteed.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
May 29, 2015FNM Modern tonight, first time I've been there in a while because of injuries. The only decks I know for sure I will see are Infect, Affinity, and Splinter Twin. This is what I've got for my list:Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
I cut down to 3 Collected Company because it felt that I was always getting clogged with multiple copies, so I switched one for a Dromoka's Command. I'm not sure if Gaddock Teeg is going to stay in the sideboard, if he doesn't stay he'll get switched for a Thalia. I don't have access to Noble Hierarch or the funds to obtain them, so I'm going with Birds and Pilgrim until I can get some.
Post FNM EDIT
ended up going 3-0, however I did not face the previously mentioned decks. Instead I faced Dragons (standard player signed up for Modern so it would fire off. 2-0), Jund (2-0), and BW Tokens (2-0). The Dragons matchup I didnt really get to see much because of some awful luck on his part. Jund ended up in a stalemate for a few turns in game 1 where he had Liliana of the Veil with 1 counter and no creatures on field and I had Wilt-Leaf Liege in hand but no third G/W mana to cast him. It eventually broke when he gambled on a Dark Confidant and died to revealing Huntmaster of the Fells. Game 2 he couldnt get a second B/R mana due to Leonin Arbiter and Ghost Quarter and he eventually died to a Liege empowered swing. BW Tokens game 1 was a continuous one-up contest that ended with double Wilt-Leaf Liege pumped creatures swinging for lethal. Game 2 he got an early lead thanks to a timely Tidehollow Sculler and Lingering Souls, but once again Wilt-Leaf Liege was the power boost I needed to take him down.
Apr 15, 2015Creature wise you're probably looking at Steward of Valeron, Wilt-Leaf Liege, Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers as the best green coloured Knights excluding Knight of the Reliquary. Personally I've been a fan of running 1-2 Beast Within for its ability to take out anything at instant speed, but they do get the 3/3 token as a replacement which can be a problem if you don't have an on board Exemplar or Mirran Crusader. Land wise if you can get them or have them already Horizon Canopy is a good choice as is Gavony Township.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Apr 12, 2015The problem I see with Pentarch Paladin is his toughness doesn't put him out of Bolt range and he's very mana intensive for an ability that needs an extra turn to fire off. He does get to destroy a permanent though, so that does make me curious to how he'd work.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Paladin aside, what are people's thought on running Collected Company in place of Aether Vial? Had to sell my Vials a while back and won't be able to get them again for a good while.
Mar 28, 2015Going to be trying a new store for Modern next Friday, thinking its as good a time as any to see how running a set of Collected Company works out with Hatebears. This is the list I've got so far, I keep feeling there's a way to make it better though.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
That list gives me 25/60 cards that are fetchable with Collected Company. I've been thinking of adding in black so I can run things like Tidehollow Sculler, but I don't have the lands to make it possible and I would have to remove the land destruction component of the deck.
Mar 12, 2015Shriez posted a message on LoadingReadyRun Spoiler(s) - Vial of Dragonfire and Wandering TombshellAll this and they still haven't revealed Dromoka's Command...Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Mar 9, 2015Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
What cards did you decide to cut for the 4 Collected Company? Do you mind showing the list you used?Quote from Varandune »Just saw Collected Company and I decided to throw 4 copies into Hatebears and do some test hands just to see how it would do. This card is the real deal. Not only do we get card advantage in a green shell, but we also are able to choose the best 2 hatebears out of 6 cards and deploy them onto the battlefield. This card is insane for us, and the card affects the design of the deck as well. Now you can run less copies of certain silver bullet hatebears because you can more consistently get them. This also improves our sideboard plans, allowing us to get our backbreaking creatures much more easily in the appropriate matchups.
Feb 22, 2015Used this build to go 3-1 at FNM. Would've been 4-0 except for a misplay in the last match.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
What works: Sigarda puts in work when I get her on the field, especially when combined with a Liege. Restoration Angel has been good to nullify enemy removal, also gives me another flying threat or defense against Lingering Souls. Avacyn's Pilgrim has been a good budget alternative to Noble Hierarch because I don't have $200 to get them.
What doesn't work: Aven Mindcensor has been lacking in the results department, and I'm thinking of either moving them to the side or cutting them from the 75 entirely. If they do move to the side I will replace them with either 2 Mirran Crusaders or a 3rd Liege and the second Sigarda.
Feb 6, 2015Just ran Hatebears for the first time at local store, I'm sold on it as the deck I should play for this format. Ended up going 2-1 with this list.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Once my Voices arrive they will replace the Gaddock Teeg and Sigarda. There were only 3 matches this time but it was good to get a feel for how to play the deck.
Round 1 (2-0)
I didnt get to see much of what his deck did but I did see Lotus Cobra, Dragonmaster Outcast, and Thundermaw Hellkite come out on his side.
Round 2 (Twin, 2-0)
He burns and Snapcasters my Thalias and Pridemage, but I manage to stick Scooze on the field and feed every creature in the graves to him and Path his Pestermite before he can cast Twin. 2nd game he gets down an early Blood Moon but cant draw a Pestermite or Exarch and I eventually take him down.
Round 3 (Jund, 0-2)
I got really unlucky with draws the entire first game. Decent opening hand, then drew every 4 cost card in my deck while he went triple Goyf and made me discard any playable cards I had. Second game I side in 3 Mirran Crusaders but fail to see a single one or Path to Exile to deal with his Olivia and he ends up stealing every creature I have.
Jan 24, 2015Not sure if my deck counts as aggro or midrange but it does the job. I want to try and find room for Flamewake Phoenix but I'm not sure what I'd cut for them. This is what I'm running so far.Posted in: Standard Archives
My hardest matchup so far is Abzan Whip simply because of the Hornet Queen tokens. I'm thinking of putting in Anger of the Gods or Bile Blight into the main deck, likely removing Harness By Force and Hordling Outburst.
Nov 30, 2014Yet again the weekly Modern events around my area didnt fire off. I'm thinking I need to cut down on the 3 cost Knights, so I'm going to cut Cavaliers and Reliquay to 3 each and either go +1 Meddling Mage and +1 Gaddock Teeg or +2 Gaddock Teeg. Mage has been good when I can figure out what my opponent is playing and what threats they could have that haven't been played yet, but Gaddock Teeg is a better catch-all against the other decks. Havent drawn Hindering Light or Deft Duelist in a game yet so I cant give a verdict on how they play. It always seems they're on the bottom of my deck or they're the next card after the game is over.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Nov 25, 2014Was not able to play last time Modern fired, hoping it fires today so I can give the verdict on Deft Duelist and Hindering Light. This is what I've got so far, still need to figure out the creature lineup:Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
The single copies of Flooded Strand and Windswept Heath are the only ones I own. I'm thinking of trying out Kira, Great Glass-Spinner if I can trade for a copy. I'm also going to try and get more Meddling Mages.
Nov 23, 2014It might work with Thalia, I'll find out tomorrow if someone else shows up for Modern. Land base is what I'm having the toughest time getting right, not having as many fetches as I would like not helping. Right now I'm thinking 4 Hallowed Fountain (would run 2 HF and 2 Seachrome Coast if I had them) and a Cavern of Souls (calling Human) for my non-basic blue sources and either 1 or 2 Islands so a Blood Moon doesn't shut me out of blue.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
I also found another card from Shards of Alara I will be testing: Hindering Light. It's not as good as Brave the Elements for saving creatures, but it also can be used on myself or non-creature permanents, and it replaces itself when I cast it. I'm thinking of trying out 3 copies to see how it fares, then either cut to 2 or up to 4.
Nov 20, 2014Do you think its to the point where we would need to maindeck Rest In Peace or should it stay in the sideboard? What I'm thinking so creature wise in a Bant build is cutting the Knights down to Knight of the Reliquary and Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers (since they're out of Bolt range) and giving Deft Duelist a shot. He may not be a Knight but I think there's potential with him.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Nov 19, 2014With what you said about changing your game to more control oriented, do you think there's potential for a straight up control oriented Knight deck? I think if there is it'd have to be W/U or Bant colors.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Oct 13, 2014I like playing this deck, but I keep running into problems with the life cost from lands and dealing with the mirror match. I do not have access to Goblin Rabblemaster, so I have to make do without it. This is the decklist I am running currently:Posted in: Standard Archives
I feel like the Sorin, Jeering Instigator, Master of the Feast, and End Hostilities are putting in the least amount of work. I'm not sure what to replace them with except to max out the Mardu Charms to 4. Since I don't have any way to get Goblin Rabblemaster, what could I possibly use in his place?
Oct 3, 2014I just got back from FNM taking my version of Mardu despite missing a few pieces, ended up going 2-2. This is what I was running:Posted in: Standard Archives
While I was at FNM I managed to pick up 2 Caves of Koilos, 1 Butcher of the Horde, 3 Crackling Doom so what I'm thinking of changing is:
-1 Tormented Hero (this guy did absolutely nothing every game), -1 Reprisal, -1 Master of the Feast, -2 Magma Jet, -3 Mardu Skullhunter, +3 Crackling Doom, +4 Soldier of the Pantheon, +1 Butcher of the Horde. Still need to figure out how I'm going to fit in the 2 Caves of Koilos, I might cut down on fetchlands to make room for them.
Aug 26, 2014Built a Commander deck so I'd be able to play with friends. The games are usually 4 people, sometimes as many as 6 at once. Kaalia of the Vast was the one card I went out of my way to purchase, any other expensive card I either have had for a long time or I got lucky with a booster pack. This is what I've got so far.Posted in: Multiplayer Commander Decklists
Aug 1, 2014I'm not sure it'd quite fit so well with Knights. If you were to run an Ajani, I'd say Ajani Goldmane would be the better option because of his -1 ability giving a permanent buff and temporary vigilance. Though I'd say Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is a better choice than running a planeswalker due to Thalia increasing the cost of Bolt, Path, Twin, etc and drawing removal away from Knight Exemplar.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Jul 2, 2014Crib Swap doesn't make a flying token, it makes a changeling token.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
For GW builds, would it be worth running a single Forest in case of a Blood Moon or Magus of the Moon, or should we just run no Forest and hope for the best?
Jul 2, 2014Have you thought of running Smallpox instead of Zombie Infestation? Seems like it'd combo pretty well with Athreos plus the only thing you'd really lose would be a land and a life, and if they don't want your creature back in your hand thats 4 life you've taken from them for 2 black mana.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Jul 1, 2014Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Even the power 4 is still too difficult, I'd rather pay the extra 1 mana for Beast Within since it hits any permanent. The problem with Beast Within is the fact that its a green card.
Jun 30, 2014For me when I tried Selesnya Charm it was a matter of there was never a 5 power creature I could cast it on. For GW builds I would highly recommend giving Beast Within a try as extra removal. The fact that it hits anything is phenomenal, and I'd much rather give my opponent a 3/3 Beast than let them have something like a planeswalker, a full Urza-tron, or any other number of potentially game winning cards that Path to Exile can't deal with.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Jun 19, 2014We'd still have to deal with a Restoration-esque card in the form of Quickling though. Sure its not as good as Restoration Angel, but it still sets up abusing the enter/leave play effects. I'd be happy if Thragtusk never came back in any shape or form.Posted in: Speculation
Jun 18, 2014Can't believe I forgot to write down my decklist. Hopefully the deck tag works this time.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Here's what I remember from each match:
Round 1 VS Scapeshift (2-0) sided out 3 Path to Exile, 1 Knight Exemplar, 1 Mirran Crusader. Sided in 2 Gaddock Teeg and 3 Aven Mindcensor.
Game 1 Knight of Meadowgrain and Rancor put me out of normal burn range pretty quick, he couldn't draw removal in time. Game 2 an early Gaddock Teeg stopped him from a turn 5 Scapeshift + Prismatic Omen combo, Wilt-Leaf Liege kept Teeg safe from his removal.
Round 2 VS GW Death and Taxes (2-0) Sided out nothing
I honestly should have lost this except for him making a mistake in tracking how much life I had left. Survived an attack with 1 left then swung with the team for game. Game 2 his own Leonin Arbiter kept him from getting a replacement land on turn 3 from my Ghost Quarter, then he couldn't deal with double Steward of Valeron, Wilt-Leaf Liege, and Knight Exemplar.
Round 3 VS UWR Control (1-2) Sided out 3 Mirran Crusader, 3 Knight Exemplar, 2 Knight of the Reliquary, 2 Rancor, 1 Knight of the Reliquary, sided in 2 Gaddock Teeg, 2 Thalia, 3 Aven Mindcensor, 2 Ethersworn Canonist, 2 Rest In Peace
Game 1 I get a hand with Vial and 4 Knights, he has a hand full of Lightning Bolt, Lightning Helix, and Electrolyze. I get 5 land draws in a row and he kills me with Snapcasters and flashing back the burn spells.
Game 2 Took most of the time left in round, Rest In Peace and Gaddock Teeg keep him from his planeswalkers, Sphinx's Revelation, and Snapcaster nonsense. Ghost Quarters and Tectonic Edge keep his Celestial Colonnade's from swinging. Comes down to both of us at 1 life and no cards in hand, I draw a creature first.
Game 3 I manage to get him down to 4 with a leveled Student of Warfare, but I don't draw anything to back him up and I die on his last turn.
Jun 17, 2014I just got back from weekly Modern with GW Vial Knights, ended up 2-1 (We usually only get enough for 3 rounds, rarely we'll get 4). Played against Scapeshift (2-0), GW Death and Taxes (2-0), and UWR Control (1-2). UWR is always the hardest match up for me, they just have so much removal. What can we do to deal with so much removal? Right now my current strategy is side out Mirran Crusaders, some Knight Exemplars, and my Knight of the Reliquary's for Thalia, Ethersworn Canonist, and Gaddock Teeg.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
May 28, 2014If Horizon Canopy and Mutavault aren't useful targets, what about Gavony Township? It's worked for me when I drew it (wasn't running Knight of the Reliquary at the time), and gave me something I could put mana into aside from Student of Warfare.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
May 22, 2014I can try dropping 1 Mirran Crusader, 2 Wilt-Leat Cavaliers for a 2 drop creature and 2 Knight of the Reliquary. I want to try more games with Cavalers before I decide if they make the cut or get replaced with Reliquary. If budget wasn't an issue I'd run 4 fetchlands and 3 or 4 Horizon Canopy.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
May 21, 2014I saw a post a few pages back about someone talking about a Knight list that ran Steward of Valeron, so I thought I'd make a GW Vial knight deck that has him and try it at the bi-weekly local Modern tournament. It was only 3 rounds, but it gave me some important feedback on mistakes I'd made in making the deck like too many 3 cost cards. The decks I played against were a GB Dredge deck and two Affinity decks. The GB deck I beat 2-0 because of fast Mirran Crusaders, Rest in Peace, and no Liliana's showed up. Both Affinity decks opened crazy and beat me in 6 turns.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
This is the list I was running
I'm thinking of cutting the Cavaliers and Crusaders to 3 and adding 2 Knight of Meadowgrain or Qasali Pridemage to deal with all the artifacts.
edit: I can't get the deck tag to work
May 1, 2014Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
I saw this video (http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?ID=11734) that was posted a while ago and noticed that he was running Squadron Hawk, so I thought I'd give it a shot. It has worked wonders in pretty much every game I get to cast it, it's won me over. It thins the deck, fills the hand with more creatures, and gives me more ways to go over their creatures or defend against token swarms.
Squadron Hawk on the field is also something I can sacrifice to a Liliana of the Veil and not feel too much pain, or discard him from hand from the same Liliana. Better to ditch a Hawk than a Knight.
Apr 30, 2014I just started going to a new store to play Modern at, previous place stopped doing Modern. This is the deck I've been running lately, I feel the main or side could use some work, anyone able to give input?Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
x1 Cavern of Souls
x4 Knight Exemplar
x4 Mirran Crusader
x4 Squadron Hawk
x4 Leonin Skyhunter
x3 Knight of Meadowgrain
x3 Knight of the White Orchid
x4 Student of Warfare
x4 Path to Exile
x3 Brave the Elements
x4 Honor of the Pure
x4 Aether Vial
x4 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
x4 Aven Mindcensor
x2 Rest In Peace
x1 Stony Silence
x1 Knight of Meadowgrain
x1 Surgical Extraction
A lot of the decks I go against are black/green dredge, black/white tokens, and blue/white/red control. The most difficult matchup is the blue/white/red, they always have an answer for anything I try.
Apr 10, 2014So there's going to be a GW planeswalker in Journey Into Nyx.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Has anyone given thought to a GW Knight deck that runs 3 or 4 of him to help us pseudo tutor to set up better or give a boost so we can swing for game easier?
Feb 20, 2014I've thought about running a RW Knight deck, never had the cards to do it though and I'm curious to how it would run. Do you think it works better with or without Aether Vial, and how feasible would you say it is without access to Arid Mesa?Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Nov 7, 2013I finally found a group that plays Legacy tournaments at a local store and managed to eek out a win at the weekly tourney, but it showed that I need a lot of work with making a good side deck. The most notable decks I saw people play/talk about what they have are Stax, Rakdos Pit Dragon, High Tide, Charbelcher, and Maverick. I have not faced the Maverick, Charbelcher, or High Tide decks yet, so I don't know how my current deck would fare against them. There were 3 rounds in the tournament, I ended up 3-0 at the end.Posted in: Midrange
This is the build I used, had no idea what I was going to face. Lack of staples made me use cheaper alternatives.
x4 Temple Garden
x4 Sunpetal Grove
x2 Arid Mesa
x1 Verdant Catacombs
x1 Marsh Flats
x1 Horizon Canopy
x1 Gaea's Cradle
x1 Dryad Arbor
x4 Knight of the Reliquary
x4 Mother of Runes
x2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
x2 Aven Mindcensor
x2 Qasali Pridemage
x1 Scavenging Ooze
x1 Wilt-Leaf Liege
x1 Noble Hierarch
x1 Birds of Paradise
x1 Captain Sisay
x2 Gaddock Teeg
x1 Linvala, Keeper of Silence
x1 Sigarda, Host of Herons
x1 Mangara of Corondor
x4 Aether Vial
x1 Umezawa's Jitte
x4 Swords to Plowshares
x4 Green Sun's Zenith
x1 Garruk Wildspeaker
x3 Wilt-Leaf Liege
x2 Aven Mindcensor
x2 Relic of Progenitus
x1 Cold-Eyed Selkie
x1 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
x1 Qasali Pridemage
x1 Surgical Extraction
x1 Bojuka Bog
x1 Stony Silence
x1 Rest In Peace
I don't know what sort of changes I should make to adjust for the decks I know are in my meta, does anyone have any suggestions on changes I should make?
Aug 24, 2013From cards I already have, would this be an acceptable semi-budget loadout? 1 Horizon Canopy, 2 Temple Garden, 2 Sunpetal Grove, 1 Arid Mesa, 1 Verdant Catacombs, 1 Marsh FlatsPosted in: Midrange
Other than land the only things I don't have are a full set of Noble Heirarch (1), Stoneforge Mystic (1), Tarmogoyf (0).
Aug 24, 2013How would someone go about playing this deck if they don't have original dual lands? I'm interested in playing this deck, but I don't have Savvanah or the old school fetch lands, so I wanted to know what alternatives are available to me.Posted in: Midrange
Jul 7, 2013I just got back from my first local Modern tournament, managed to place 2nd. Won the first round against Birthing Pod after losing game 1, god handed game 2 by turn 5 thanks to Mirran Crusader and Sword of Fire and Ice, and game 3 he didn't draw any Pods.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Second round was against Zombies, White Knight and Mirran Crusader didn't care much about his creatures, especially when backed up by triple Knight Exemplar.
Final round was against another Pod deck, this time I didn't draw any Path to Exile and both games ate one million copies of Pestermite to the face thanks to Kiki-Jiki.
This is the list I ran:
x4 Student of Warfare
x4 Knight Exemplar
x4 Leonin Skyhunter
x4 Hero of Bladehold
x3 Accorder Paladin
x2 Mirran Crusader
x2 Stillmoon Cavalier
x2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
x1 White Knight
x1 Knight of Meadowgrain
x1 Knight of the White Orchid
x4 Path to Exile
x4 Brave the Elements
x2 Elspeth, Knight Errant
x1 Oblivion Ring
x1 Sword of Fire and Ice
Mar 9, 2013Might help if I noted what decks I usually go against. These are the different decks I could face at any time:Posted in: Multiplayer Commander Decklists
Damia, Sage of Stone
Karador, Ghost Chieftan
Animar, Soul of Elements
Lazav, Dimir Mastermind
Momir Vig, Simic Visionary
Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief
Sheoldred, Whispering One
Gisela, Blade of Goldnight
Rhys the Redeemed
I'll definitely look into getting some of those cards mentioned earlier, some of them I never knew about.
Mar 8, 2013In my group that plays EDH, we have anywhere from 4 to 6 people in a single game. We play free for all, and it usually boils down to negotiating temporary alliances and working to bring down the biggest threat at the time while keeping a low profile and appearing unthreatening.Posted in: Multiplayer Commander Decklists

I'm on a budget, so I can't afford a lot of expensive cards like Windswept Heath, Umezawa's Jitte, Savannah, etc, so I'm working with what I have. Cards I'd like to get for the deck are Yosei the Morning Star, Genesis, Gaddock Teeg, and Akroma Angel of Wrath.
I welcome comments and criticism, so please let me know.

I'm trying to make a fast and effective GW deck while using a Knight base. I have 3 Student of Warfare incoming, not really sure what else to add to make it better. I'm on a budget, so I can't afford awesome expensive cards such as Sword of Fire and Ice or classic dual lands. I'm open to all suggestions though, so fire away!

Feb 4, 2014My favorite card out of every card in this game would have to be Thundermare. It may not be among the best or the strongest cards, but it was the first card I ever pulled from a booster pack of Portal all the way back in 1998. I still have that same Thundermare to this day.Posted in: Announcements
