2-2 overall result tonight. Tombstalker was fun but it's not good enough with my list. Ajani is going to get axed for a Night's Whisper most likely while Tombstalker is probably going to be a land of some kind.
He comboed the turn before I could Slaughter Games his Lightning Storm, lame.
Squadron Hawk and Tombstalker were the MVP's this match, forced out the buff spells by going for kills on my turn.
Grixis Death's Shadow
Honestly this feels like the best matchup for me, Rest In Peace and Mirran Crusader put in work.
I had the most abysmal luck this match, didn't see any creatures in any games except for Squadron Hawk, 1 Thunderbreak Regent, and an Emrakul thanks to Nahiri. No Lingering Souls, no Butcher, no Nahiri post game 1, nothing.

Jun 22, 2017No Emrakul, The Aeons Torn to go with Nahiri? Personally I'd cut a Liliana for Emrakul if only to have a secondary win condition besides Resto-Kiki loop. Would love to see how it performs, give us a report on your matches?Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
This is the Flying Midrange list I'm taking tomorrow, I'll write up how it does each round:
Jun 19, 2017If Eternal Scourge was a 2 drop I'd honestly try it. Problem is it's a 3 drop and it'd be competing with Lingering Souls, KCommand, and Crusader for that spot.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
As for Squadron Hawk, I'm not advocating for it based on 1 FNM performance, I'm advocating for it based off a month of repeated testing against every deck I can find and every option I have for the 1-2 drop slot. I have yet to find a matchup where I wished Hawk was something else.
Jun 19, 2017I disagree with you on Squadron Hawk being unplayable. It's been a fantastic performer ever since I put it in the deck, I've never been disappointed to draw into it, and it's multifunctional as both a pseudo-draw 3 spell and a stream of threats/chump blockers depending on the situation. You can even pitch it for the escalate on Collective Brutality if you want. Out of all the cards I've tried out in the 1-2 drop slot Squadron Hawk has been so consistent it isn't even funny. If I had to rank them based on my experiences it'd be like this:Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
1. Squadron Hawk
2. Night's Whisper
4. Tidehollow Sculler
6. Smuggler's Copter
7. Nether Traitor
8. Harsh Mentor
9. Pain Seer
I wish someone would try out the set of Squadron Hawk so I can see if my results are a fluke or if it's really something to consider maindeck worthy. If we're already trying out everything under the sun is it that big a stretch to try out Hawks?

In my case I simply don't own any copies of Thoughtseize, I'd run it if I had it.Quote from Aegraen »I don't understand lists that aren't playing 4 Thoughtseize's and are instead playing 4 Inquisitions.
I've been giving more thought about Bitterblossom and I'm thinking of swapping them to try out Mirran Crusader. I saw someone mention that card either this page or last, I'll be trying it next FNM. I could also use help building the side deck if anyone feels like helping out. This is the list I'm taking next time.
Main deck I'm thinking about swapping a Lightning Bolt for a Fatal Push, Grim Lavamancer for something like Night's Whisper or Painful Truths, and a Blackcleave Cliffs for a different land. Side deck I need some work because too often I'm going against decks and only finding 1-3 cards at a time that are helpful. The decks that pop up the most are Grixis Death's Shadow, Infect, Boggles, Mardu Tokens/Control. Sometimes a deck like Saheeli Cat, Lantern Control, and Elves will pop up. The side I listed is what I'm thinking for next week, anybody got advice what to switch out?
Jun 17, 2017Personally I'd find room for another Butcher of the Horde and 2-3 copies of Fatal Push.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
I'm also shelving the Blade aspect of my deck. It's fun but I've been siding them out more and more frequently that I might as well not have Swords in the main and either have them in the side or out entirely. I'm thinking of going more Midrange with this for a creature lineup
DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards 1 Grim Lavamancer
4 Squadron Hawk
3 Butcher of the Horde
2 Thunderbreak Regent
1 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
1 Stormbreath Dragon
I'm debating whether I want to go for 2 Nahiri, the Harbinger and 1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn or if I want to try out something in the 3 drop to accompany Lingering Souls. I'm debating dropping Bitterblossom for Night's Whisper or removal.
Jun 10, 2017Went 3-1 last night. Lost to Ad Nauseum (0-2) round 1 due to having never played against the deck before and naming the wrong card with Slaughter Games. Won the following rounds against Mardu Control (2-0), Abzan Delirium (2-0), and Living End (2-1).Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Once again Squadron Hawk put in work and win me several games. Nether Traitor was a letdown, his impact just wasn't enough to justify keeping the set in the deck so they're being cut for something else.
May 30, 2017Made some changes to my Caw Blade build. Monastery Swiftspear wasn't impactful enough often enough so they've been cut. Anguished Unmaking has also been cut to put Collective Brutality back in the list. I want to find room for another Grim Lavamancer but not entirely sure what to cut. Batterskull is back in the lineup as well for some much needed lifelink and big body.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Man what I'd give for Stoneforge Mystic to be legal again.
May 23, 2017Gideon felt decent when I played him, he just doesn't feel like he fits into my list. Never got to play him against Eldrazi but against other decks it felt best to play him turn 4 after a turn 3 Souls and preferably with Bolt/Path/Push in hand, and depending on board state go for his +1 first to neutralize a threat then next turn stick the emblem.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
May 20, 2017So the list I ran had to be changed from the one I posted earlier. I cut Gideon and Manamorphose for 3 Butcher of the Horde and 4 Harsh Mentor and switched out Batterskull for Sword of Fire and Ice, and Collective Brutality for Anguished Unmaking. Harsh Mentor once again felt like a let down and not worth it every time I played him so he's going probably going to be cut for a set of Nether Traitor or Tidehollow Sculler. Squadron Hawk was the creature MVP tonight, the only time he let me down was game 3 of final round when I started with a Squadron Hawk in my hand and my first and second turn draws were both Squadron Hawk.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Overall I ended up 2-2, lost to Spike Feeder Combo in round 3 and Elves in round 4. Round 3 I got stuck on 2 lands with Sword, Souls, and Ajani in hand. Round 4 he comboed off on turn 2 and I didn't find any mass removal. I'll post a decklist and details about matches in the morning, I have to sleep for now. I can definitely say I'm digging this Caw Blade style version.
Assault Formation (2-0)
Game 1 went fast thanks to turn 2 Hawk, turn 3 Sword, turn 4 Sword, turn 5 double equip and swing. Game 2 I didn't get double Sword and he was able to build a defense. Eventually he went down to Spirits and Butcher.
Grixis Death's Shadow (2-0)
Game 1 turned into a race between Spirits and Hawks against his Shadow and Snapcasters. He Countersqualled my attempt to double Lightning Bolt for the win and it came down to a top decked Butcher sacrificing my last Spirit for haste and taking out his last 3 life. Game 2 Hawk put in work alongside Crackling Doom and Fatal Push for a quick win.
Spike Feeder Combo (1-2)
Game 1 I kept a 1 land hand with Path, Push, and Inquisition. I didn't draw another land for 5 turns and lost. Game 1 Crackling Doom put in work and he fell to a Hawk and Spirit swarm. Game 2 I opened with 2 lands and didnt draw another for the entire game while I drew Lingering Souls, Swords, and Ajani.
Game 1 he was able to out pace my lifelink and bled me to death. Game 2 I opened Wrath of God and Anger of the Gods while he opened with 1 Forest and 1 mana dork that immediately ate a Lightning Bolt. Game 3 he comboed off on turn 2 and 3 and I didn't topdeck Anger or Wrath to save myself.
Overall I'm very satisfied with how Squadron Hawk performed and I'd say it was the MVP of the night. Harsh Mentor had the least impact of all the cards I played, Swiftspear never showed up in any of the games I played. Bad luck I guess to not see a 4 of even once. To take Harsh Mentor's spot I'm deciding whether I want a better Sword carrier in Nether Traitor or a creature that can actually block like Tidehollow Sculler.
May 17, 2017If people are trying out Manamorphose might as well jump on board and try out some other cards as well like Canyon Slough. Found some cards in my collection I used to use a lot and figure I'd try them out this FNM to see how they do. Inspired by old school Caw Blade.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
It's an idea I've been kicking around in my head for a while, the card I'm least sure of right now is Batterskull because of Fatal Push and the 5 mana cost, we'll see how it performs though. If it doesn't perform I'll look to replace it with another Sword or Basilisk Collar or something.
Deciding between Gideon and Batterskull or 4 Nether Traitor. Anybody got any thoughts on that?
May 11, 2017Going to take Hatebears to FNM tomorrow, could use some feedback on the list. I'm going to be trying out Scattered Groves and Rhonas the Indomitable in a more aggro oriented strategy, suggestions are more than welcome to try and get that 4-0 win.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Comes down to 23 lands, 9 non-creature spells, and 28 creatures. I'd love to find room for another Qasali Pridemage, thinking that either a Rhonas or a Liege is most likely to get the axe. Or find room for a playset of Gideon of the Trials, I'd have to cut the Company's and 2 other spells for that. Thanks for the input.
Here's what I'd take out for Gideons. I'd take out 2 Collected Company, 1 Wilt-Leaf Liege, and 1 Rhonas the Indomitable.
May 9, 2017I'm trying to rework my deck for FNM this week. I'm abandoning personal techs for efficiency, I want to go 4-0 this week. This is what I'd like to build around as a skeleton and I could use some help in fleshing it out. I don't have access to Liliana or Thoughtseize at all.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
These are the cards I have available to me and quantities.
Planeswalkers: 2 Ajani Vengeant, 2 Nahiri the Harbinger, 3 Chandra Torch of Defiance
Instant/Sorcery: 4 Lightning Bolt, 4 Path to Exile, 2 Fatal Push, 2 Terminate, 4 Crackling Doom, 2 Blessed Alliance, 2 Wrath of God, 1 Collective Brutality, 1 Lightning Helix, 1 Anguished Unmaking, 1 Kolaghan's Command
Creatures: 1 Emrakul the Aeons Torn, 1 Grim Lavamancer, 3 Young Pyromancer, 4 Tidehollow Sculler
Apr 29, 2017Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)Why even play Entreat the Angels ?
I was trying out the card to see how it felt. I like it as a 1 of, 2 showed up in my opening hand too often. I tried Young Pyromancer and the other cards and didn't like it so much. Neither did I like a 4th Bitterblossom. Intangible Virtue never felt like a dead draw, have to play more games to see if that changes.
why only 2x Nahiri and not the full playset ?
Your list seems rather light on removal
I only have 2 copies of Nahiri and 1 copy each of Push and Terminate. If I had more Fatal Push I'd definitely run them.
4x Crackling Doom seems really odd in the SB, why choose it over Path to Exile/Terminate (or even Blessed Alliance) ?
Is "Bogles" a major player in your meta ?
Yes it is. Bogles alone has 3 people playing them and they all side multiple Leyline of Sanctity so a full set of Crackling Doom is the best thing I have against them. Blessed Alliance doesnt get around Leyline, Crackling Doom does. It also works against Infect when they're packing 4 Vines of Vastwood and 4 Blossoming Defense like the local Infect player does.
The cards I'm definitely cutting from the list are 1 Entreat the Angels and Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet. a 4th Gideon and some kind of removal like Path/Push/Lightning Helix are going in.
Apr 29, 2017Got to try out Gideon of the Trials today thanks to a friend loaning me his copies. It was beastly and I'm going to try and get a playset of him as soon as possible because I feel he did so well. He's definitely replacing Mardu Strike Leader in my list. Played against mono white flyers (2-1), Tribal Flames Zoo (2-0), Elves (0-2), and Infect (2-0). Here's what I ran:Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Biggest performers were Gideon, Intangible Virture, and Crackling Doom. Sword came in huge against Mono W Flyers and Infect. Gideon's emblem won me the match against Mono W Flyers.
I'm thinking I need to cut Entreat the Angels to 1 copy and cut Kalitas since he hasn't performed at all. I'm thinking either 2 Harsh Mentor or 1 Gideon and 1 Lightning Helix.

Feb 4, 2014My favorite card out of every card in this game would have to be Thundermare. It may not be among the best or the strongest cards, but it was the first card I ever pulled from a booster pack of Portal all the way back in 1998. I still have that same Thundermare to this day.Posted in: Announcements
