I'm pretty happy that Ruric Thar is getting a card. Even all the way back during Guildpact, I felt it was a shame that, of all the different Gruul clans, only the Burning Tree clan got their leader in card form.

Good point. This would also be a good opportunity to make an uncounterable planeswalker with a really good ETB and LTB bonuses. ETB could be be one sided wheel of fortune and LTB could be Gamble without the discard.

I'm really hoping they'll print something like this. I feel that Magic needs this really bad.

Yes, that is precisely what Magic needs: a planeswalker card that is almost completely unrecognizable as such because all its EtB and LtB abilities only leave room for, like, one actual loyalty ability.

BTW, Gamble without the discard is just Diabolic Tutor.

Also, seriously? A one-sided Wheel of Fortune and a Diabolic Tutor on the same card? That thing would have to cost at least eight mana in order to be fair.

Forgive me for interpreting a fictional character differently than you.

That's what happens when other people read most or all of the works of fiction featuring a given character and you don't. Your interpretation of said character differs from theirs, because you've based your interpretation on incomplete data, and they haven't.

I just realized that WotC missed a golden opportunity to put Rackling in Tibalt's deck instead of, or along with, Lavaborn Muse. A creature version of a classic torture device isn't merely right up Tibalt's alley, it practically is Tibalt's alley.

Although that Jace quote seems pretty spot on considering Jace and Garruk aren't exactly friendly to one another and I can see Jace taking any opportunity to make a few jabs at Garruk.

Jace really isn't the sort of person to "take any opportunity to make a few jabs" at someone he dislikes. And if someone is pissing him off, Jace isn't likely to waste his breath on clever insults or pithy banter; he'd be much more inclined to do whatever he could to bring his interactions with the person to a rapid conclusion so that he doesn't have to deal with them any more. Not to mention the fact that Redirect's flavor text is more mean-spirited and confrontational than I think Jace is capable of being.

    That's the vertical cycle.

Note how Graven cairns has already received it's horizontal cycle. Don't just rule it out because it was printed as part of one cycle.

That's not a vertical cycle. A vertical cycle is all the same color identity, but different rarities. For example, Bloodfire Dwarf, Bloodfire Kavu, and Bloodfire Colossus are a vertical cycle.

You are correct, however, in stating that a card can be part of two separate cycles. In addition to Graven Cairns, there's also, off the top of my head, Leyline of the Void.

If you're going to have a Goblin planeswalker it has to be Squee, Goblin Nabob And honestly since he's an immortal he can't be to overpowered because he technically can't die. I would give him a plus ability that brings him back from your graveyard. Also he was regarded as a genious, so give him an ultimate tutor ability. As for a second ability I'm not really sure. So far then I have this.

    Squee, Goblin Planeswalker R
    Planeswalker - Squee

+3: If Squee, Goblin Planeswalker is in your graveyard return Squee, Goblin Planeswalker to the battlefield under your control.

    -?: Some other ability.

-3: Search your library for a card and put it into your hand. Then shuffle your library.

I think this could be a well balanced planeswalker. Not only can you use his ability only once every other turn, you have to keep him alive the turn he comes into play to use his ultimate ability. Now given he would probably be in a creature heavy deck, (Rakdos, Naya, Jund) that wouldn't be too hard, but with all of these new cards targeting planeswalkers it might trickier than you think.

Another thing. Wouldn't Sorin Markov, a vampire, also be immortal? Because you know vampires are kind of cursed with immortality.

    So many continuity errors.

If I'm way off base someone get me back on track.

When a planeswalker is put into a graveyard, they're not actually dying. They've simply become too injured to continue helping you, and have retreated to recuperate. (That's why they get loyalty counters, not health counters.)

    Mortify:
Many who cross Sorin's path come down with a sudden and fatal case of being-in-the-way-of-a-millennia-old-vampire.

Even though I already own five copies of Vindicate, I'm still tempted to run Mortify in something, just for that flavor text.

Now that I think about it, what I really want is an Elspeth emblem. She's the only planeswalker who can produce an emblem, but doesn't have one in card form. She's one of only two planeswalkers that I use who can produce an emblem, so half the emblems that I actually want, don't exist.

Dimir House Guard would be awesome to tutor for your death barons.

Dimir House Guard can't transmute for Death Baron. The converted mana costs have to be equal.

What I hope for (but secretly know won't happen) -
    Name - Chandra, Lightning Manipulator
    Cost - One red mana
+1 - Chandra, Lightning Manipulator deals three damage divided as you choose among any number of targets
-2 - Gain control of target creature until end of turn, it gains haste. Put +1/+1 counters on it equal to each loyalty counter on Chandra, Lightning Manipulator. Remove those counters at the end of your turn (+1/+1's counters are equal to after this ability has been activated)
-9 - Exile all permanents, each players life total becomes one.
    Artwork -
    :mad:___d
    Don't fail me M14

Lightning manipulator? That's Ral Zarek's shtick. Chandra's is fire. I didn't think anyone could miss that, considering the fact that her head is on fire.

Kamigawa Spirit tokens would be awesome as would Adephage tokens. Frown

When a card makes a token that's a copy of something, WotC doesn't make tokens for that, because you already have a representation of the token readily available; the copied card itself. Just put some dice on that ****, man.

Also, how could they possibly make a token for, say, Cackling Counterpart?

Jesus, why are all of you so freaking combative over this?

I think the problem was that it sounded like you were saying that the cards in this duel deck weren't worth enough money, which is something that people in this thread had already proven to be objectively false. If you had made it clear that the cards weren't valuable enough to you, personally, then I doubt anyone would have given you grief.

First, I'm surprised Tibalt didn't get Tainted Peaks as well to help fill out reprinting of that cycle.

Tainted Peak works best when black is your primary color, or when there's an even split between black and red. Tibalt's deck is only splashing black, so Tainted Peak would have been a poor choice, actually; he doesn't have enough swamps for it to "turn on" most of the time.

    what issue?...

Allow me to enumerate my grievances:

1 - MtG goes out of its way to not bring back dead characters. Bringing back dead characters is a slippery slope. At first you're only bringing back a single character. Next thing you know, things are just as bad as they are in the Marvel and DC universes, where death is meaningless, and characters only stay dead for a couple years.
2 - Nicol Bolas, as far as we are aware, has never been to Innistrad, and has no idea who Griselbrand is.
3 - Even if the previous point isn't true, why would Bolas bother bringing back Griselbrand, when he could instead simply recruit a demon who is, y'know, not dead? The only reason he bothered fixing Tezzeret's brain thing was because Bolas felt that Tezz could discover for him the secret recipe for making etherium.
4 - Griselbrand doesn't have a planeswalker spark. (If he did, it would have ignited during his fight with Liliana, and it would have flung him into the blind eternities before Liliana dealt the killing blow.) You also can't just make someone a planeswalker; they have to be born with it. And before you try citing Karn's re-ascension, let me point out the fact that that plot point was stupid, contrived, and flew in the face of previously established canon.
5 - Again, even if the previous point wasn't true, why would Bolas bother? There's an entire multiverse of people out there of people who are already planeswalkers who Bolas could recruit instead.
6 - Black/red? We didn't get to see much of Griselbrand's character, but what little we did see would indicate that he is not emotional or impulsive, but rather cold, cruel, calculating, and willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals. If anything, he's black/blue. Or, more realistically, monoblack. Like his card.
7 - Creating a bunch of demon tokens for his ultimate is the thing I take least issue with, but Griselbrand really doesn't strike me as the kind of guy to summon minions to do his bidding. The fact that he felt the need to deal with Avacyn personally would indicate that Griselbrand prefers to get his hands dirty, rather than trust someone else to get the job done right.
8 - Why is this hypothetical Griselbrand planeswalker card of yours animating land? Did you somehow miss what Griselbrand's shtick was? He exchanges life for cards, then hits people to gain life so you can draw more cards. That right there is enough material for two, possibly all three, planeswalker abilities. So why dip into this out-of-flavor animate land nonsense?
9 - Making massive defenders. That's totally what black/red does. Yes, truly, black/red is the most defensive color combination of them all.
10 - Why does a ten toughness creature need regeneration? Also, it'll only last one turn anyway; if your opponent actually wastes a kill spell on your animated land, not only will it be tapped from regenerating, (meaning that it still won't be able to block, despite surviving,) there's also the fact that you'll just be able to animate a different land next turn. So even if the land doesn't regenerate, your opponent still isn't going to permanently deal with your defender by aiming a kill spell at it.
11 - this is a minor nitpick, I'll admit, but it should be "until your next turn", not "until the end of your opponent's turn". That way, it functions as intended in multiplayer.

he was a big name and was crushed...i have his card and anytime i play him i think "i hope they drop lily and she kills you"...would be cool to have a little revenge.

If you're feeling down about Griselbrand's lack of screen time, just remind yourself that it could be worse. He could be Vhati.
