So you think Jar of Eyeballs is a sleeper card? I kind of stayed away from it because I thought it was too slow, just looking at it. However, being able to sift through your whole deck in one fell swoop, especially when you're on the defense with a mill sub-strategy seems big. What's your experience with it?
And... I did not expect you to run green over white. Did you hate the removal spells, human subtheme and evasion creatures of white?
My eyes kind of stayed away from white mainly because of the mana fixing abilities of green, as well as the synergies of the werewolves. Tunnel vision. :/
When it worked, though.. it worked.
I feel like your build is a lot more solid, though.
Top 8'd a competitive sealed, only to be knocked out of the first round of finals. I showed some of the guys my pool afterward and they all gave me the same answer: The pool was rough - very hard to choose a correct build. So I ask of all of you: How would you have built this deck?
I wanted to fit the two undying vampires in, but I felt they would be too slow... who knows. I lost to green/white travel preps with all kinds of craziness.
So, here's another game of "how would you build it?" I went undefeated at a 3-round pre-release sealed (weird format, I know). Anyway, here's the pool.
When I opened the sealed pool I was pretty disappointed that I didn't get any money cards, of course. With my best rares being in red, I got double-disappointment when I saw that my red pool was pretty much unplayable thanks to it being so shallow.
.. But then I laid my cards out and saw the blue-white skies deck that is so consistent.
So the strategy was pretty much an air-raid beatdown with a mill sub-theme, which saved me in a few games. Avacyn's Collar is pretty much the nuts when you have humans to feed it. getting two spirits out of a Doomed Traveler while trading up is nice if I do say so myself.
So, the shop I go to just opened up an Innistrad league, and I slapped a deck together with the jank I drafted/opened from packs I won from drafting. After having a bad run, I think it's time for some critique of the modifications I made to the deck. Any suggestions as far as budget cards is welcome, as I think I already figure on running Jund if I could EVER afford the cards. Anyway, here's the list, and it's pretty bad.
Pack 1 pick 5: Voiceless Spirit over Markov Patrician
Pack 2 pick 3: Spectral Rider over Rebuke
All in a a fairly nice draft. You ended up in the right colours I think.
I definitely see the Voiceless Spirit over patrician point. If I'm gonna have an x/1, I may as well have the flier with first strike.
However, I feel like Rebuke saved me in too many situations. Though I do see the aggression to be best in a deck like this, the double victim of night made me want to stay away from early double white drops.
What did you think of disciple? I have yet to play 1 or see 1 on the table against me.
It's definitely not very strong unless you're running lots of morbid or death effects and possibly recursion. Without these, you're only really likely to use the disciple when you're backed into a corner and by then you're already losing.
Though, it is a nice side against decks that run enchantment control on your creatures if you're running colors that don't have that kind of removal.

Curse of the Pierced Heart I would have taken Into the Maw of Hell here, but I've been reading a lot about butcher's cleaver. I have a priest, not sure if I'm going humans, but I've seen a lot of people valuing this over some other things I'd take over it. So I thought I'd give it a try.

Boneyard Wurm We like our artifacts
Match 1 was against Mono-blue junk. Needless to say, easy win.
Match 2 W/U weenies
He drafted Mentor of the meek and a bunch of evasive fliers.
It came down to a flooded board with my priest, monk, and creatures vs 2 fliers of his and ground clogging. Systematic tapping and selective attacking grinded him out.
Second game was the aggro draw for me, instant pressure with unruly mob, elder cathar, markov patrician and butcher's cleaver. I drew into unburial rites and banshee. His last ditch effort to put a blocker out resulted in him blocking a 5/2 lifellink elder cathar, then having his goliath drained out with the banshee. He gg'd out.
Match 3 W/R Aggro
These games were pretty close. He had a whole suite of bombs including Manor Gargoyle, Instigator Gang, Rage Thrower. Game one was pretty down to the wire. He had all three bombs on the board to my Geist-Honored Monk and a bunch of creatures. A few well-placed victims of night, rebukes, smite and attacks cleared his board of said bombs, making the subsequent attacks that much easier. Second game he drew lands to my aggro draw.
Seeing as I have no real experience with competitive drafting, I gave a $10 draft a whirl. This was 3-round, single-elimination with no real time limit. I really wish I had a camera on me, but alas, you will have to settle with my main deck and sideboard (what I can remember of them, anyway). Any commentary is appreciated.
Round 1 vs. W/U humans/zombies
No much to say about this. Basically stalled the board while I brought my bombs out. The 13/13 trampler came out both games after he tapped out to bring something out.
I remember returning Stitched Drake and Makeshift Mauler to his hand enough that he couldn't re-cast them for a while without giving me a huge advantage in board position, so needless to say, it was awesome sauce when I plopped down my Skaab Goliath and finished the round the next turn.
Round 2 vs. U/R werewolves/aggro
Game one was a total smash to my face. Turn 1 Waif -> flip. Turn 2, bash for 3, Darkthicket Wolf. I had nothing early enough in my hand to make a difference. Sided in: 1 Silent Departure, 1 Sensory Deprivation, 1 Frightful Delusion.
Games two and three were really close. I managed to stall him out to draw my bombs, but he had burn for these. Late game flashbacks are a house.
Round 3 vs. W/G/b stuffs
I had an easy enough time winning game 1. During that game he shows me Elder of Laurels and Spider Spawning/Mulch. I Severed his spiders' bloodline too early (it was in the graveyard), so he flashed it back the next turn. The game came down to an attack with a flipped test subject, a Falkenrath Noble, a Ghoulraiser and a Fortress Crab after I return his Elder to his hand, into a spider token pumped for six, three more un-pumped ones and a Bell-Ringer. No matter how he blocked, the Noble would have drained him because of the trades.
Side in: 2 Night Terrors, 1 Silent Departure, 1 Stitcher's Apprentice.
Game 2 saw him win. Slow hand with only 2 creatures. He dropped Hamlet Captain, Villagers of Estwald (then flipped because I couldn't play anything), Slayer of the Wicked when I put my Flakenrath Noble out.
Game 3 was total domination by my deck. I wouldn't let him keep a creature on the board for the first six turns (two silent departures opening hand + forbidden alchemy and land draws). Murder of Crows, Falkenrath Noble, Stitcher's Apprentice ftw.
Wish I had more information for people to comment on. All I remember is...
p1p1 took Sever the Bloodline over Mayor of Avabruck. I decided I would rather win than take a card I need for a janky deck I'm making.
p1p2 Ludevic's Test Subject. (The guy across me was trying to force me to play blue and hey, I love blue, so kudos.)
...
p2p1 Bloodgift Demon.
p2p2 Grasp of Phantoms, passing Blasphemous Act and Silent Departure. The Silent Departure tabled. lol
Had an opportunity to try out Laboratory Maniac (I got passed 2 Curse of the Bloody Tome), but the Maniac didn't table. The only Dead Weight I saw came in a pack with Murder of Crows. So I took the Crows.
Technically it's not really anything because it has a combination of cards that are only good in Aggro (e.g. Feeling of Dread) with cards that are only good in Control (e.g. Rebuke, Into the Maw of Hell).
You can't count Silent Departure as an Aggro card because it's being splashed off 2 sources of Blue.
I've found Doomed Traveler to be more effective as a blocker your opponent doesn't want to attack into, rather than an attacker your opponent doesn't want to block.
Abbey Griffin and Skirsdag Cultist definitely aren't Aggro.
I guess you can call it a "mid range" deck as a cop out, but in my opinion any deck that is not focused on Aggro becomes a Control deck. Limited as a default is won with card advantage and game-ending threats, except for the focused Aggro deck which breaks the rules, but you have to be entirely Aggro for it to work.
The first point..."it stops attacks" basically means it's a lifegain card which is generally not great in Limited. Also you'll notice I said the Waifs are fine, for just the reasons you mention...they're just not as good in this deck as in a more focused Aggro deck.
Cards don't have absolute values. Their values can change considerably based on the kind of deck they're in.
Now that you've explained it to me, I feel like I am closer to understanding your point.
As for controlling the focus of the deck with my picks, is there any wisdom that you could impart on me? I'm of the old-school thought that removal is removal, evasion is good, two-for-ones are houses, etc. I'd be grateful for some of your wisdom when it comes to fine-tuning picks.
Why is Feeling of Dread in your deck? Especially two copies?! This is not an Aggro deck. I guess the Waifs are fine because they're cheap and trade up, but this is a control deck. You're starting the game with 2 blank cards in your library.
I think you're forgetting that Feeling of Dread also stops attacks.
Also, what's wrong with having a one-drop that trades up?
It gums up the ground and presents a threat that they have to a) trade a bigger dude for, or b) use removal on.
Deck seems okay, not amazing. Double Slayer of the Wicked and Geist Honored Monk are very good, and you've got a pretty good amount of removal, but you lack really good finishers outside of the Monk, and the deck's aggro plan is a bit weak due to the inconsistency of a splash coupled with a somewhat low density of really solid creatures (that density isn't terrible, but it's not unusually strong, either). Certainly seems capable of winning a draft with good play and draws, but I wouldn't get tilted if it didn't get there.
As far as draft advice, Geistflame over Mikaeus isn't defensible. Mikaeus is just absurd, and he and the Grasp of Phantoms were the only two genuine first-pick quality cards p1p1. Geistflame is fine, but you really don't want to be first-picking it.
I guess what I was on tilt about was the misplay during game 1 of the second round that cost me the win. Seeing the final round, even if I lost then, would have been nice.
Thanks for the advice, I believe yours has been the most constructive here.
Well, you certainly gave the guy next to you some mixed signals. Like others said, Geistflame over Mikaeus is a really odd choice. Especially as you then move into white due to Rebuke, which is decent but not a bomb.
Yeah, probably lots of don't-do's for me happened here, I realized that very rarely do people actually attack with him; I saw the person who got him just sit there and buff all his other guys. Definitely not going to pass him up p1p1 next time around. If I didn't pass him, I feel like white would have seen a stronger second pack as well.

Round one was a bit of a fluke. Something happened and he conceded the first game before it even started, so I feel as if it wasn't fair.
Game 2 he laid the beats with Invisible Stalker + Furor of the Bitten, but I managed to pull out of it. I was at 6 life, Rage Thrower made a flipped Waif trade for two flipped Delvers into 6 damage to my opponent's face, putting him at 5. He returns my Rage Thrower to my hand, but I still have 3 power on the board and he only has his Stalker which is Bitten. He puts me to three, I attack with Abbey Griffin and a Sensory Deprived Scourge, then sac the Scourge to Cultist ftw.
Round 2
game 1 I could have won, he was tapped out with 4 creatures and 8 life. I have Monk at 5 power with 2 spirits, Abbey Griffin, Avacynian Priest and a freshly-drawn Feeling of Dread. I suck. Game two, I pulled out a quick start and beat him down. Game three gives him a Juggernaut, Sturmgeist, and a lot of dudes. I manage to hold him off at 4 life for a few turns, but draw dead when I needed it most.
Overall, this was a great draft. Play mistakes galore, but now I feel enriched for it. Suggestions for future draft-picking are appreciated.
So you think Jar of Eyeballs is a sleeper card? I kind of stayed away from it because I thought it was too slow, just looking at it. However, being able to sift through your whole deck in one fell swoop, especially when you're on the defense with a mill sub-strategy seems big. What's your experience with it?
My eyes kind of stayed away from white mainly because of the mana fixing abilities of green, as well as the synergies of the werewolves. Tunnel vision. :/
When it worked, though.. it worked.
I feel like your build is a lot more solid, though.
Here's the deck.
1 Young Wolf
1 Avacyn's Pilgrim
1 Reckless Waif
2 Scorned Villager
1 Hinterland Hermit
1 Immerwolf
1 Hanweir Watchkeep
1 Lumberknot

1 Sever the Bloodline
1 Make a Wish
1 Into the Maw of Hell
Land
7 Forest

I wanted to fit the two undying vampires in, but I felt they would be too slow... who knows. I lost to green/white travel preps with all kinds of craziness.
Any critique is welcome.

When someone finally got out a flier to defend against an attack, Niblis of the Urn and Niblis of the Mist/Saving Grasp forced lots of damage through.
When fighting against big creatures without trample, Selhoff Occultist and my token generators Avacyn's Collar/Stitcher's Apprentice and the Crows' digging helped me hold out to deck them.
All in all, I'd say it was pretty fun.
Any critique is more than welcome.

I've thought of replacing the two Moans in the MD with either Evil Twins or Army of the Damned. I've also thought of splashing red for Devil's Play with Sulfur Falls.
I do know that the rich-guy version of this deck would run Snapcaster Mages and a set of Lilianas.
Any thoughts?
I definitely see the Voiceless Spirit over patrician point. If I'm gonna have an x/1, I may as well have the flier with first strike.
However, I feel like Rebuke saved me in too many situations. Though I do see the aggression to be best in a deck like this, the double victim of night made me want to stay away from early double white drops.
All in all, it was a bit underwhelming.

I would have taken Into the Maw of Hell here, but I've been reading a lot about butcher's cleaver. I have a priest, not sure if I'm going humans, but I've seen a lot of people valuing this over some other things I'd take over it. So I thought I'd give it a try.

Any critiques are welcome.
Yeah, I would have taken the Banshee here. But awesome beats, mate. That decks looks pretty beastly.

I think you're forgetting that Feeling of Dread also stops attacks.
Also, what's wrong with having a one-drop that trades up?
It gums up the ground and presents a threat that they have to a) trade a bigger dude for, or b) use removal on.
I guess what I was on tilt about was the misplay during game 1 of the second round that cost me the win. Seeing the final round, even if I lost then, would have been nice.
Thanks for the advice, I believe yours has been the most constructive here.
Live and learn. Thanks.
