Yes, these cards never leave your library until Forbidden Alchemy resolves. If you do not choose them, they go to your graveyard which will trigger their ability.

No, no one gains priority in an untap step.

or do i have to wait for the upkeep. and if i have to wait for the upkeep i assume its to late to do it since Emeria, the Sky Ruin says At the beginning of your upkeep, is that right?

    Correct.

    Quote from Opeth
at the beggining of your upkeep, emeria's ability goes to stack. with the ability on the stack, you tap unstable frontier and transform itself into a plains. When emeria's ability resolves you have 7 plains and you are able to return a creature from your grave.

That is incorrect. If you do not control 7 plains when your upkeep step begins the ability will not trigger. THe land has a conditional trigger that uses the intervening if clause. That additional condition must be true in order for the ability to trigger, and it must also be true when the ability resolves in order for anything to happen.

From here we just moved on, but one of my friends later commented that he believes that I would get a warning of some sort for this because my opponent clearly misunderstood what the Expedition/Hexmage did, and I allowed the game to continue. He says that I should have informed my opponent that my Hexmage didn't do what he thought it did. I argued that my opponent simply, although stupidly, sacrificed his expedition targeting nothing.

This is perfectly fine. If he had a question about how the interaction worked he should have either slowed down and thought about it or called a judge. It is legal to sac the Expedition with zero targets as it does say 'up to two' targets. So nothing illegal happened here. Being confused about how things works is not a problem, performing illegal actions is and that didn't happen.

Could someone who has definitive knowledge of how to handle a situation like this let me know if a penalty should have been assigned?

Assuming that your description is 100% accurate, then no.

Does anyone know any Yugi players who have taken up Wizards on their offer? I'm planning on writing an article on the subject...

Something like 60-80 expressed interest and did receive an invite, but only 14 showed up and played.

So technically, I can still do my Quirion Ranger trick before Combat Damage Step...

All right, its all clear now, thanks!

Yes, but in order to block this attacking gofy keep in mind that you will have to use the Ranger's ability and untap your other creature in the declaration of attackers step BEFORE blockers are declared.

    http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=events/magic/states

Wizards of the Coast has decided to revamp our Organized Play offerings in 2008 in order to make Magic available to the most players possible. We are redesigning the States/Champs programs for both the Two-Headed Giant and Standard formats. As such we will not be running the 2HG States/Champs event normally run in March or the Standard event that takes place in the fall. The 2HG events previously scheduled for the UK will still take place. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to having a new invigorated program for you later this year.

What matters is if your opponent responds by playing spells or abilities in any way. If they do no, you are stuck with what you choose when you announced the spell. If they do, they you can choose something different when it resolves.

    Quote from Condor
Which, I will point out, is also the official ruling for Sutured Ghoul:

That is from the Judgement FAQ (which is now five years old) and the rules have changed a bit since then, primarily the change in how CDAs work that was made last May. There were two rulings given in that FAQ about the Ghoul. A portion of that other ruling is still in Gatherer, this ruling does not appear in Gatherer at all.

Here is a more recent NetRep ruling from May of this year:

    > What happens if you Living Wish for the Nightmare after removing it for
    > Sutured Ghoul?

If you Living Wish for a card in the RFG zone, it is no longer the same
object it was before: "An object that moves from one zone to another is
treated as a new object." [CR 217.1c]

So in the example below, the Sutured Ghoul is referring to a P/T that
can't be determined, and is treated as zero: "If anything needs to use a
number that can’t be determined, either as a result or in a calculation,
it uses 0 instead." [CR 104.2]

The Sutured Ghoul's P/T will no longer include the variable "number of
Swamps you control" from that Nightmare. And if that Nightmare was the
only creature RFG'd for Sutured Ghoul? Then there's a State Based Effect
    looking for this Ghoul...

    Quote from Condor
Let me rephrase. Any logic that leads to the conclusion that "the removed cards" refers to the cards that got put into the RFG zone, can also be applied to the "the sacrificed creatures" to mean "the cretures that got put in the graveyard."

It ~can~ lead to that, but it does not have to.

    Quote from Condor
Do you want to draw that conclusion, and rule on what a Dracoplasm's p/t is accordingly?

    No.

    Quote from Condor
Or do you want to say that the situation is somewhere betweeen ambiguous and "both creatures' p/t are fixed in a similar manner?"

I do not believe that these two cards work the same. Dracoplasm refers to creatures, creatures can only exist in play, so it can only work using the P/T of these sacrificed creatures as they leave play. The Ghoul refers to cards, which can exist in zones other than play, so you can use the characteristics of those cards.

  • posted a message on Clutch the undercity and Rise Fall
Any time an effect looks at the characteristics of a split card it will get two answers. However there is a difference between effects that try to match a characteristic and those that use the characteristics. Transmute tries to match the converted mana cost of the Transmuted card. To Transmute for a split card you must match one of the sets of characteristics, not a combination of both sets. Other effects just use the info of a card, like Dark Confidant, and it uses both sets. So when you reveal Rise // Fall with Dark Confidant you lose 2 and 2 life, for a total of four.

    Quote from Condor
If Sutured Ghoul can vary that way, so can Dracoplasm. That means every Dracopalsm comes into play as a 0/0. Do you want that?

I have no want/need in this situation. As I understand the rules as they currently exist, the P/T of these creatures can vary. This may change, I have no preference either way.

Just to clarify here, as I understand it the P/T of this Sutured Ghoul can vary as the rules currently exist. However there is a discussion underway on changing this. Condor ~may~ be right, but it is up in the air right now.

If you removed a Maro for the Sutured Ghoul while you have 5 cards in hand, according to the rule quoted above, would the Sutured Ghoul be a 5/5 (assuming no other creatures were removed)? -Jack

Yes, and as the number of cards in your hand changed, the power and toughness of this Sutured Ghoul would also change.
