That actually sounds like needless fiddling to me, but to each their own, I guess.
Looks like contraptions are going to be cards that start the game either in play or in some other zone, waiting to be assembled by moving/adding tokens to sprockets? Sounds weird and fun.
In order for cards to be modular like that, the effect on the cards would have do be incredibly dull for the naming, templating and even aesthetics to match up at all. The splits on the card we have pieces of also aren't laid out in a way that supports that idea at all.
The card is being spoiled like this so that the community can Assemble the Contraption. Its a neat idea for a spoiler, I think you're reading far too much into it.
The pieces revealed so far very clearly fit together to make one card with two sides. It looks like a card that starts the game in play and has to be activated after the fact. It also doesn't look like they are modular, the text doesn't break off in nice clean places that mix and matching would work with.
I don't for a second believe that WotC greenlit a third UnSet and thought it would be good idea to make cards that are only useful if you collect half a dozen of them in order to have one usable card.
As you may have been able to guess by my not doing more than popping my head in, I'll probably not be continuing with things as is.
EW has always been a balance of enjoyable interactions with my characters and other characters I like and obligation to deal with characters I have little to no investment in. That balance has been off for a good while and hasn't been helped by the general stall.
I will come back in a heartbeat if I think the overall group dynamic is going to be better for me. I'll keep checking in every now and then. Wish everyone the best.
Apologies one and all, for my extended absence. I've had about two weeks solid of pretty much constantly filling in for people on incredible understaffed shifts, so had no energy to spare for much of anything else.
And now I'm going away to the beach for a week! Minimal posting/chatting might occur but I'll be another week before I get back to it regular. Everyone play nice and feel free to nudge-mod my characters to keep things moving.
Vivian- Some wretched rival of mine arranged for us to be entertained in a cell, made a point of having his goons tell me exactly why I was imprisoned. You can have puppy relax now, Waire, I'm fairly sure Kage won't attack us.
Waire- He doesn't look much like Kitty Man, but okay.
The heads of the subersu switched almost immediately from threatening to doe eyed and floppy tongued.
Carter focused on his blade, hoping to give the machete a veneer of magical light, as he did so he imagined an extra layer of toughen silks around himself, hoping those too would manifest.
Carter- I don't like that trail he's leaving, Yack, you're a summoner, can you think of any creature that could trail behind him and mop that up?
Upturning the trough revealed a burlap bag which seemed to be full of a young woman's clothes, there were numerous styles of dress among them. Sylvan delicacy, elexian ruffles, epicrin utility and even greevan chic. Kherren, eyes closed, tilted his head to one side and furrowed his brow.
Kherren- There's a basement... door is in that stall you were checking... doesn't feel like there's anything in it.
At this point a third figure appeared from the tunnel, dressed in a three-button navy suit with no collar. His hair, gloves and boots were all a shade of silver turned blue. As he stepped into the light Kage immediately recognised him as the Sylvan enchanter who had helped him with his malevolent genie, Vivian deBourgh.
Vivian- The other brutes we've come across all attacked on sight.
Carter quickly brought to mind a passage he'd read about the fishing techniques of the saaur, they would net their catch before spearing it. He quickly imagined a pair of spear floating around each net, commanding them to stab through the webbing to destroy the bound shadows.
A greel dressed in a silver shirt, navy waistcoat and dark trousers and other accouterments rounded the corner. He took one look at the group before yelling down the tunnel.
Greel- Looks like more of those ugly guys who put us in that cage, master!
Master- Then why are you yelling instead of fighting?
The subersu stopped when it drew close to the tampered bridge, evidently not wanting to take the unsteady path. It lowered its front legs and barked again.
Subersu- Dad! Dad! Food?
Dad?- Have you found something boys?
A voice echoed from down the same tunnel the subersu had emerged from.

Looks like the text is coming together on both sides. Still missing probably four pieces?

Another piece. This looks like one card that starts face down and has conditions to assemble the contraption.
At the beginning of your upkeep if you control a Rigger move your something counter to the next sprocket.
Looks like they come into play with their counter on a certain sprocket. Hopefully its nice and intuitive as a whole card.

Damit pulled out a stick of charcoal and frowned as he crossed out a line in his book, which appeared to be titled 'Dusklight'.
Damit- About many things, yes. Are you and your sister close?
Waire- He doesn't look much like Kitty Man, but okay.

Carter- That thing looks scary.
Greel- Looks like more of those ugly guys who put us in that cage, master!

Greel- They're on a bridge!
