I frequent WotC's Booster Draft Simulator about once every couple weeks. This weeks sim has an interesting choice in (I believe) the third pack. Blaze and Whispersilk Cloak.
Now, these are both bombs in draft. So I find myself in a strange position. No matter what colors I'm playing, I think Whispersilk Cloak is the better choice, yet I pick Blaze every time.
Whispersilk affords shroud (which is awesome) and unblockable (also amazing). In draft, evasion is the biggest asset.
While several fat red picks come your way (like a shivan dragon) the white and green cards that come your way are strong (specifically referencing this week’s draft sim still). So, again, the fatties in green would benefit highly from the cloak - can't be burned by it, get through a fatty.
Yet, I still pick the Blaze. Is it the subconscious fear of burn to the face? I think it might be more than that, though I may be wrong. Slapping a few mountains into a draft deck for a Shivan Dragon and a Blaze is definitely a possibility.
I would like clarification on other people’s opinion of this particular choice. It might help if you used the draft sim, as well. Link provided.
SO, I've been a magic player for a long time. I've worked in and managed a game store for several years. But nowadays it seems that at every turn WotC are taking my favorite game into a bad direction. perhaps I'm overreactiong a bit, but I put up with alot of crappy things.
1 - The power level of the game is off the charts. It's becoming less and less a game of finnesse and skill and more of a game like YuGiOh. Sad but true. Whoever has the most disposable income will probably win with retarded combos that take no skill to pull off. Case and point, Dramtic Entrance and Progenitus. With excel it can happen at the end of fourth turn. Unless yo uhave a *** in hand, its over. The only reason I won is becuase the kid Legend Bombed his own Progenitus. RETARDED.
2 - Multicolored symbols. Something to nit-pick. Not horrible, just my own pet peeve. I hate this. I think it makes the skill nessicary to pull off multicolored decks meaningless. Takes skill away from the game.
3 - The lack of meaningful storyline. Previous sets had a rich background for storylines behind them. It started going downhil iwth Mirrodin block, Kamigawa was just ok, but after that the stroies were drivel. I'd rater read Daniell Steele. Ugh.
4 - The new borders on the futuresighted cards. That was just too much. The white lettering of Planar Chaos and the purple symbols for timeshifted is understandable though overly complicated. But the new borders on the future sighted cards made me want to puke. At least that is over.
5 - Overly tacky and rushed art. Is it the new style in art for it to be a digital piece of crap? Seriously, I'm tired of this "speeedpain" style ********. This is probably the thing that irritates me the most of all the previous mentions. There is no detail. It looks like it has only 4 layers and that the artists only took five minutes to do it on a 30$ tablet from Wallmart. Where are my origional watercolors and arcrylic masterpieces? Lost. Apparently when something is new and shiny it is automatically better.
There are so many more problems with the new changes, but I looked the other way. Thought it for the better. I can still play my game. But now, with the unveiling of this "into the battlefield" ****. That is the straw the broke the camel's back. Thats too much. What the **** (excuse the language) is Wizards thinking? What happened to my parallel to chess where the person with the greater strategy, intellect, and understanding of the rules was supposted to win? That time is gone. Who needs power nine? We have the Lorwin and Alara blocks. I'm sure M10 will be worse. Filled with ****** "Epic" rares what everyone wants because they take no effort to play. Lands are suposed to limit your resources and now they're emaningless. LAME
