Ertai, Wizard Adept master of smugness?

This is one of the first ones I thought of. Maybe my brain has made an unholy combination of Ertai and Chandler?

I just saw this hearthstone card from the upcoming expansion:

I swear this art reminds me of a magic card, with some kind of mage sitting smugly. (It's not dark confidant or teferi) Maybe an old blue card?
Can anyone help me or am I just going crazy?

I quit standard back at the end of scars block, mostly because I was tired of the increasingly competitive atmosphere. I always played budget decks so the cost wasn't a big thing. I was also getting into EDH at the time, and I figured that magic twice a week was too much. If you've never tried EDH or cube, I'd say give it a shot. It's a lot cheaper (especially if your group is relaxed about proxies) and you can still play magic without investing constant time into deckbuilding and metagaming.

Here are some suggestions for your Riku deck:

Misguided Rage - Single out an opponent (probably the one with fewest permanents) and make them sac a permanent, probably a land. Copy it with Riku for extra spite.

Tears of Rage - With the right token generators, this card can become a win condition. Watch as your opponents are covered in wet, salty burns. Again, copiable by Riku for extra value.

Screaming Fury - Only have Riku out? Attack for 12 general damage.

Blind with Anger - Okay, I know what you're thinking: "This is just threaten for one more mana!". Yes, but it's instant speed, so it can be used defensively. And with the proper splice onto arcane support, combined with Riku copies makes for loads of value!

Yeah, it really depends on what purpose you're destroying lands for. If your goal is to stick a big creature/planeswalker and prevent your opponents from interacting long enough to get ahead, Global Ruin is not a good option because your opponents will still be able to play most of their removal/counterspells. In this scenario, Cataclysm might be better. I don't run global ruin in Avacyn because I need to hit all of the lands.

But if your goal is to simply put the game back to 1-5 lands to stop people from going off and to set yourself up to bounce back faster, then Global Ruin makes sense, particularly in a mono-colored meta.

You have infinite mana? If it's blue, Filigree Sages does it alone.

You can replace the second half of this combo with Voltaic Construct if you have infinite mana already.

The problem is that a once-sentence post that's "just a fan" is indistinguishable from someone who is soliciting a youtube channel on random boards just to get views. Either way it doesn't really bode well if a fan of the channel can only bring themselves to call it "fairly good".

Maybe you could make a thread asking people to post their favourite youtube channels, actually creating some discussion?

And how do you know she didn't try? Did she actually say she didn't try, or just that she didn't stir up the courage to tell the interviewer?

That's the same thing, isn't it?

She said there was no good time to mention it, even though they discussion starting date and days of availability. Did she get nervous about it? Possibly. But even if she did get nervous about it, that's still not trying.

The result is the same, indeed. But the intent does matter- with intent, in a less stressful situation, she may have succeeded. Without intent, she would fail regardless of the situation. I think as this relationship continues you'll be able to determine her intentions more clearly. Just remember, people make mistakes and sometimes they fail to meet your expectations. Part of being in love is having the grace to forgive them when this happens.

I'm glad you two are still in contact and I hope you can make things work in the future. Smile

I've been following this thread and I just want to pose some neutral questions to the TC to clear up some ambiguities:

    1. When you refer to the "promise" that was broken, are you referring to the generic promise to "try to make this long distance thing work", or did she make a specific promise to mention the start time during the interview? Did she use the word "promise"?

    2. How much time would she need to take off in order to see you? Could she just take a friday off and come down for the weekend or is the ticket expensive enough that it needs to be longer?

    3. Did she ever give a reason for not mentioning it in the interview? Did you ask?

    Some resources for you:

Top 50 Cards of Each Color - By no means should you take all of your choices from this list, but if you're looking to add a bit of power to your deck, these cards are likely to help.

Manabase Crafter - This website is excellent for figuring out which lands to run for fixing your colors, as well as various utility lands.

As far as deckbuilding goes, assuming you want to play immediately, just grab 99 (minus lands) of your best cards for the strategy you're going for, and then learn what works and what doesn't work as you play. It'll quickly become apparent which cards help you win, and which ones are dead weight.

But there are also many that if you cut sol ring for smth else it just becomes better. You won't miss it! i didn't .

This is the point I disagree with- there are not "many" decks that are made worse for having sol ring. There are "a few". Even a lot of aggro decks will still benefit from a sol ring.

dondee, for the Edric example, it isn't that it won't need the colorless mana at some point- it's just that an Edric deck would much rather play a Llanowar Elves turn one and a Trygon Predator turn 2. It needs creatures on the board early, so sol ring wouldn't be played until much later in the game, where it loses its explosiveness. It isn't just about color, it's about tempo.

I agree with most of TC's arguments except...

    SOL RING ISNT VITAL!

Sol Ring is the number one most popular card in EDH for a reason. It's in 74% of recorded decks in the statistics thread. As far as I'm concerned, the only decks that might not want sol ring are low-curve aggro decks where their cards have almost no colorless cost (Like some Edric decks). As for not being able to depend on one card, many people play with the partial paris mulligan rules in EDH. On your first 7-card draw, there is a 7.07% chance of drawing your sol ring. If you send all 7 back and draw six, there is a 6.52% chance of drawing it on the mulligan. So approximately one in every 7 games, you will naturally start with sol ring. Then, people tend to play Trinket Mage, Enlightened Tutor, Demonic Tutor, and Vampiric Tutor, and if they get these in their opening hand, will search for sol ring because a turn 1-5 sol ring is just that powerful.

That being said, I have built decks that have excluded sol ring for thematic purposes- for example, an epic experiment deck that is all instants/sorceries. But I admit the deck could run faster if it contained a sol ring.

If you're building Hazezon, here are the all-star cards from my experiences playing against my friend's Hazezon deck for the past few years:

    Shared Animosity
    Vicious Shadows
    Tears of Rage
    Warp World
    Craterhoof Behemoth
    Avenger of Zendikar
    Storm Herd
    Insurrection
    Coat of Arms
    Aura Shards
    Skullclamp
    Gaea's Cradle
    Academy Rector
    Mirari's Wake / Mana Reflection
    Goblin Bombardment

If your goal is to win by attacking with loads of sand warriors or occasionally other creatures, all of these are worth serious consideration.

    Quote from Partick

the majority here seems to think I shouldn't run it so I guess that's my answer.

I've read all of the posts above this one, and none of them are telling you not to run your real alt-art Kozilek. Some of them disagree with proxies, but none of these posts have classified alt-art as a proxy.

I think it's a little overboard not allowing you to use a real card with altered art. Is it still obvious that it's a Kozilek? Is the text on the card intact?

If they don't allow alters, do they allow signed cards? Stamped draft cards? Extremely damaged cards (in sleeves)? I'd like to know the exact logic behind this rule of theirs.

I also find their rule on staples, and their definition of staple a little suspect. According to this thread, out of 907 recorded decks (all of which are able to run Kozilek), only 78 run him. Eight percent. Compare that to sol ring, a real staple, which is found in 74% of decks. Even if Kozilek is a staple, why allow proxies of non-staples, but forbid proxies of staples? This decision seems completely arbitrary to me. If you have a rule for what can be proxied and what cannot, it should be measured by one metric, such as cost (like the $5 rule you posted).

Edit: ^^Ah, so the truth comes out. They're just babies that don't know how to run bribery in their deck.

I feel like the biggest challenge for this deck is to reliably find the build-around card in a color that typically does not tutor for sorceries or draw a lot of cards. Here are your tutor options:

    Mangara's Tome
    Planar Portal
    Ring of Three Wishes
    Skyship Weatherlight

Luckily, white has a few artifact tutors to help you find these. Based on my experience with Eternal Dominion, the next problem is that you only get 1 enchantment per turn, which is not going to let you keep up with your opponents. I think you could use Strionic Resonator to copy the epic trigger. Other than that make sure you have a lot of enchantments that you can sink mana into (like Luminarch Ascension)

For control, sweepers and spot removal are plentiful in white. For card draw, you can take slow stuff like Mind's Eye and all the other artifact tomes, or you can run some tokens and Skullclamp.
