Build Coco, random stranger. Tron is not super prevalent in the wider world and Scapeshift is probably nonexistent outside of your local meta.

Ha, true. I'd still like to hear options though, especially since most of my games will be local.

For other posters: Eldrazi are also mostly nonexistent locally.

So I wanted to build Abzan Coco, but I realized that my local meta has both Tron and Scapeshift, two horrible matchups for the deck.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a different deck, preferably with a decent matchup against Tron and Scapeshift? I'd prefer it to not be straight up aggro, heck I would greatly enjoy control but it doesn't seem very viable. Well, Jund seems good, but I don't want to spend over 1k on a deck.

Hi everyone, I'm slowly working on building this deck as my introduction to modern. I borrowed a friend's pod deck for several rounds a while ago, and it was a ton of fun. Luckily, this deck seems to be similar to pod in a lot of ways.

One thing that I don't understand, though, is the choice between 2-4 Noble Hierarchs. Is there a major drawback to running 4? Is 2 not enough? I'm curious to hear the reasoning behind the choice.

The same goes for Viscera Seer and running 3 versus 4. I had always assumed that maxing on combo pieces was the correct choice; why is that different here?

Also, has the Archangel + spike feeder combo fallen out of favor as a backup?

Ahhhh, ok. Thank you two for the terrific, in-depth answers. They explained it perfectly.

In edh, how does Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet interact with opposing generals being killed? My assumption was that his effect triggers and that I get a token no matter where the general goes thanks to "exile that card" and "put a... Battlefield" being seperate clauses that happen from the same trigger. Is this correct? If not, how so?

Hi, I'm looking to get into legacy on around an 800ish budget. I already own a Force of Will and the Khans fetches, but not too much else. Mostly just edh cards here and there.

Which decks should I be looking at? I plan to use this deck as mostly a stepping stone to slowly building a more expensive deck, but I also want something playable as is. Merfolk was my first guess, but I worry about matchups; my local meta has elves as a prominent deck, although the other two main decks (show and tell + miracles) seem to be a solid matchup for merfolk.

I typically enjoy playing control and tempo, but aggro with control elements is fine too. Dredge doesn't seem to be my cup of tea, too.

What's funny to me is that I already started this process right before eternal masters got announced, heh. So that's obviously a factor; wastelands will be cheaper for sure when the set drops.

When your deck is mostly artifacts, why would you run Compulsive Research over Fabricate? It lets you get exactly the card you need at that given moment. Compulsive is also a sorcery, unlike Thirst for Knowledge. Fabricate is also one, but still.

You're at the point now where the cheap mass card draw only gets less optimal than what you already have.

Doomsday combo is exactly the type of deck that the EDH rules should not care about. If you want to play it, and people want to play against it, thats all cool. Those sorts of games should not be driving any rules, especially the mulligan rules that deal with how fast games start.

And apparently some think we should all have to switch back to broken PP for them. No thanks.

I agree that Doomsday is the type of deck the RC should not care about (that's a different topic), but I used it as an example of a deck that "abused" the PP while being mostly unchanged when the mulligan swapped over.

My local meta has used the standard mulligan for about two years and added the scry when Vancouver became official for the other formats. This started when the local lgs owner was starting an EDH league and believed pp to be stupid busted and so league house rules were the same mulls as standard or modern tournaments with the first mull free. Having to adjust decks to no longer need pp is difficult to embrace at first but after years with 37-40+ lands depending on curve and ramp options, looking at lists running 30-35 make me cringe. I love that this is official so some of the regulars at league can quit whining when they get a sol ring opener with no lands or gas and have to pitch it all.

I feel that Vancouver leads to better deck building, as resources need to be balanced from the get go. When we played with pp, I never need to start with a 6+ drop in hand and could therefore run more high-end cards without as much risk as I'd just pp them back.

Isn't part of the fun of edh big, flashy spells? Every casual player I've met loves to jam tons of fun, high-costed spells into their decks. PP helps enable that behavior, and it also helps ensure people have early game plays despite having big spells.

I agree 100% with the statements in the op. Removing the ability to paris for answers has only strengthened my newish Doomsday Zur deck, not weakened it. There is enough redundancy and mass card draw to completely disregard the drawbacks of the vancouver.

Overall, in my meta the vancouver has only made the opening hands more swingy, especially regarding colors. Sure you can run more cipt lands if you're in 3 colors, but you shouldn't be forced into choosing between slow lands or a thousand dollar investment for a good manabase.

Yup, good point. How is the manabase working out for you right now with the mulligan change? Mine is... ok, but I miss being able to partial away reanimation targets.

So I put Zur in the same kind of sleeves as Tasigur, which means that I can quickly swap decks when I get bored of one or the other. It kinda rocks, heh.

Anyway, yeah I enjoyed Toxic Deluge when I ran it; it's a less mana and color-intensive Damnation that costs life. However, I had the same issue with Deluge that I had with Delver: life being limited in the long run. It was even worse for me since I run Necropotence.

Obviously for clearing out small creatures, life's not a problem.

As for Bring to Light, I don't personally think we have enough 5-color sources to make it consistently hit 5.

So far it's been pretty solid. It's pretty much another demonic tutor with spell mastery.
Getting entomb, buried alive, victimize, or whatever off of it and casting it for free has been pretty good so far

What did I tell ya? :p

@kvothe: Not too many good decks, from what I could tell. Saw a neat Ally deck that had an infinite mana engine, that was impressive. Other than that, no real challenge.

Tasigur dominated nearly every pod he touched. It was nasty.

So it's not a gp, but it's an open. Still should be fun, wrecking side events with Tasigur.

Fair enough on careful study, lol. And nice win!

By the way, I'll likely be taking Tasigur to the gp this weekend. Should be fun. Afterwards I'll be taking a break from the deck and building Zur, but I'll be back testing Tasigur eventually. Plus I'll keep posting here.
