The End of an Era

Its a new game, its going to take time to grow. My area started when the game first came out and now we have usually 16-20 players at the main store I go to, and other shops have decent turnouts too. The problem is (in my area) that not everyone wants too travel too far, and some of the other stores are pretty far apart. If all the turnouts were combined (adding the ppl that go to other stores to the ppl that go to my main store) We would have around 30-35, and we still get a new player or 2 every week.

Personally I think Koh, the Face Stealer is connected to Amon. I understand their are problems with this but the mask and the whole "Took my face from me" plus the ability to take away a person's bending (which is only known it seems by Avatar's and knowledgeable spirits/creatures), and that Spirits spoke to him.

I think its a "Deal with The Devil"-ish situation. Koh stole Amon's face and told him that he could only have it back if he removed the power of the Avatar (since he has hated the Avatar's due to a particual one of the preivous ones).

Might be a bit off but you never know. Very interesting show so far.

They have that mindset that CFV is going to fail in the U.S. like Duel Masters and
Battle Spirits did here in the U.S. because of how bad the Anime/Manga for those series were I suppose. I feel the TCG/CCG Industry needs a new franchise to replace Yu-Gi-Oh! but is CFV really it? The big reason why franchises like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon were successful in the U.S. was because they used the Anime/Manga and other merchandise based on it to market it out to kids to get into the TCG/CCG itself. Also because TV was more dominant than the Internet back then it was easier to expose to boost their franchise's markets.

Duel Masters failed because the Anime in the US was actually so bad that it had a incredibly negative impact on the view of the game, not to mention all it is for the most part is a watered down MTG with a cpl extra rules.

Vanguard is very new mechanically, hence why it gains attention so easily.

The Anime/Manga Industry in the U.S. has changed drastically over the course of a decade to the point where instead of being able to watch your Anime mainstream on Television the Internet made it much much harder to appeal to the target audience that the franchise is targeting towards because of how we have more control of what we are exposed of nowadays instead of just going with what's on Television nowadays. In some ways it's kind of a shame but that's how society has changed whether for better or worse I suppose.

The anime/manga industry has not changed all that much, we just wont watch trashy versions of shows anymore. Most people do enjoy a good English dub, but those are few and far between. But it makes a very positive impact when their is one. They could also just promote the Japanese version with subs like Naruto and other shows have.

Has there actually been any confirmation that we're getting Awakening of Twin Blades before Demonic Lord Invasion?

I wants mah Pale Moon. =(

Its not Awakening of Twin Blades, its Breaker of Limits, and yes we are. From set 6 and beyond, sets are getting simultaneous releases in English and Japanese, just like magic. They will still keep printing older sets in English at the same rate at the same time tho.

Basically they are rushing old sets while simultaneously printing new sets so in a short while we will be caught up to Japan and can have a global meta, just like Magic.

So you will get Demonic Lord Invasion on the same planned release date as before, but before that they will print Breaker of Limits.

I am excited that the game is being localized, but at the same time sad since it means the anime will also be localized and watching the subs on You Tube will be harder.

Crunchyroll has all episodes. If you don't pay to be a member you have to wait a week for newest episode but if you are a member you get new episodes same day as japan, high quality.

My play testing team fooled around with this game and fan translations of the entire card pool. We wanted to see if it was something the group might be interested in.

Initially the decision trees available seemed complex and strategic but as we gained familiarity with the game and became better and better the lines of play all became clear, and the game play core felt lacking. Lots of options and complicated interactions dont mean anything when the decision is so clear.

It carries some of the worst aspects of yug over with it pet peeves include the needlessly large numbers and a non resetting board state which means more things to keep track of which just is annoying and clunky. The trigger system is frankly just stupid and turns alot of peoples least favorite thing about tcgs such as when you are reliant on top decking into a core mechanic.

At the time of testing they had already started upon the poor choice of non intuitive rulings that just plagues yug. The fact that they didnt man up and ban or restrict a card but instead added the "you cant play this card as your starting vanguard clause" really irked me, thats totally not intuitive at all if its not printed on the damn card. If its one of the only arbitrary card specific rules you need to remember its not the end of the world but these things quickly add up and lead us all to completely write off the game.

There really is alot going on in the cards to be honest. In a game where a ton of "socially unique people" are going to play Japanese versions (if legal cant recall dont think it was decided on at the time we tested) of cards its a huge detriment to the game.

There will be an initial interest and it will vary from a whimper to a bang depending on if the anime/manga get localized and how they are distributed, but it takes all of the bad parts of magic such as not that fulfilling need for top decking, and the "turn dudes sidewise" simplicity the core gameplay isnt there at all. It will probably fail to permanently draw people from yug and most magic players will not be interested in this at all. There is a scene in japan for competitive play but it really pales in comparison to the rewards quality and prizes of magic and even yug.

Not to mention there is already a huge over-saturation for ccg and constructable card games right now we went from not that many options early on 90s era into just this huge and disgusting glut and so many failed to take off efforts. I mean I can think of versus, the raddidikiiaoun thing, and quite a few others that have alot more merit then what I feel is this knock off yug that had real short successful runs.

Everyone has the right to their own opinion, but I personally disagree with the majority of your points. The decisions are not always very clear, and a lot of times you have to decide between conserving resources and losing card advantage to guarantee a block/going all in to win or conserving cards in hand to try and wait another turn.

While the "Large Numbers" pet peeve is true, its not a big deal. The math is no different really, you just remove the zeros and its the same small numbers as we are used to. The point of them is to express how powerful something is. If DBZ said "His Power Level is over 9" we would not have been very impressed lol. Its all part of wooing players (specifically kids).

As for the "non resetting board state", I'm not really 100% sure what you mean, so If you could please elaborate.

The triggers are just an additional thing to plan around, + it adds a bit of surprise and luck. Standard Top Decking doesn't really matter as much in this game, as every card is a potential attacker that can seal the deal with the last damage, and you actually draw 2 cards per turn minimum.

The main points are learning how to evaluate the situations properly, know when to take damage, know when to block, how to conserve resources, and knowing the likelihood of triggers/debating to block anticipating one/knowing when to use a "Null Guard". And their is also Deck Construction which is totally separate from game-play skills.

Also the competitive scene isn't 100% established yet because the game is fairly new. Its fairly big in japan tho and it is growing fast here (at least in my area.). And we have pulled a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh players already because their meta is CRAP right now, and the new ban list looks bad. Lots of people are unhappy with it, so its the right time. Plus the prices are fairly cheep currently.

I still feel positive about the outlook of the game.

I followed the link to the fansite. ALL of the rules appear to fit on one double sided insert, presumably about half the size of a sheet of paper. Basically, if you can understand Magic, it shouldn't take long to pick up on this.

The basic rules are simple, once playing a game or two with the rule sheet as reference you should be good. Also it helps that unlike yugioh and similar to magic, effect types ae clearly labled (even more so than magic) and costs are well defined.

Just because.the basic rules are easy tho, doesnt mean the game itself is super easy. The thought processes and decision making, combined with the fast pace, makes the game very enjoyable. Also the different clans/tribes have (so far) been fairly balanced. Basicly each set wil give primary focus to 4 or 5 tribes, while most of the remaining tribes get atleast 4 new cards (one of each grade).

I was surprised to learn that this game got localized. Weiβ Schwarz seemed to have more interest from what I'd seen at conventions last year.

We'll getting Weiβ Schwarz localized would probably require getting the "ok" from each liscense, plus it is far older then Cardfight!! Vanguard, and took longer to hit that fanbase. They would also have alot of sets to print to catchup.

Cardfight!! Vanguard is a lot newer, already has a large fanbase (here and in japan), doesn't require as much paperwork to localize, and has an anime to promote it, which I bet will get released in the US and will be announced at "AnimeCentral".

Fairly new TCG from Japan that is just now hitting the states. Designed by the creators of both Yu-gi-oh and Duel Masters. Very interesting game a lot of different mechanics from other games to set it apart from the rest of the crowd. It has a very fast pace to it, but is still fun to play.

Here is some more info on the game:

http://cf-vanguard.com/en/ (English Main Site, Fairly New)

http://bushiroad.fm/ (Bushiroad Main Site, English Version.)

http://cardfight.wikia.com/wiki/Cardfight!!_Vanguard_Wiki (Wiki, Includes Japanese Cards and English)

http://www.heartofthecards.com/cf/ (A fan-site that was established before an English translation of the game was even made. A lot of the hype for the game started here)

http://www.facebook.com/groups/274051755989093/ (North American CFV Facebook Group. Useful for talking to players and getting info/trades/selling/buying)

Booster Set One just came out English a few months ago, and Booster Set Two will be out March. They are producing English sets fairly fast to catch us up to the Japanese sets, which are currently on Booster Set Five.

Hopefully I'm not the only one on here who knows of this game! It is a blast to play, and I'm sure in a few months it will gain a foothold in the states, especially if the Anime is brought over here.

The best decks in the format run like 9-14 red hosers. Red is essentially tier 2 now until rotation it seems unless it lucks out on it's rounds.

I would like for you to check those numbers, because it was no where near that high. The highest number of red hate was in the UW Puresteel deck, and that was 8 if I am correct. Also tempered steel did so well because not enough people had enough hate, which will cause people to change sideboards accordingly. With no rdw in top 16 pepple will likely lighten the hate for it to shore up matchups with decks that did top.

Lastly, since we saw no top 16 rdw, we have no idea what the red lists looled like. With so many options in red, and no defined meta to optimize against, the red lists could have just been lackluster.

I would not count red out after a single large scale tournament ... that is far too early. People said twin and valakut would be the format, and look how that turned out. You know what they say about assumptions...

since when a "potencially" 3/3 attacking on t3 is better than a "potencially" "x/2 attacking on t3"

stormblood will be killed the same amount of times that kiln fiend, but kiln fiend will be always be "potencially" more explosive and game winner than any other 2 drop

Stormblood Berserker: one time activation that only requires you to deal damage to your opponent, and has a unique form of evasion. He is more relyable to hit your opponent through troublesome blockers, and his buff is perminant. Also does not put you into situations where you will want to overextend. Also much harder to chump block.

Kiln Fiend: can be very explosive, but can also be a dud. Required constant atention, has no evasion of any sort, and puts you into a situation where he will only be good if you over extend. Can be chump blocked or removed after large investment of cards to pump.

Stormblood has my vote. I think he is even good in a classic rdw, but so is emberhauler and they both occupy the same slot idealy. I would still test the berserker as he is great vs obliterator, thrun, spellskite and valaluts walls/baloth. If you keep them down to one creature he is unblockable, and if you swing with multiple creatures into a low number of of blockers they have to decide between the horde or the berserker. He is also great with a turn 3 teetering peaks.

have you ever actually played Obliterator? I doubt it because if you had, you'd understand just how powerful it is on the attack. I dont think I've ever blocked with an Obliterator since I bought my set, they always hit and almost always force bad decisions on the defending player's part.

Think about this: This thing is so ridiculous that they had to print a silver bullet that ANY deck could use just so it wouldnt be stupidly overpowered, Dismember in the same set.

As for Bloodgift, i'll say again, I think it's the biggest insult to mono black since Phylactery Lich, and even more so, because we (my brother and sister true believers) have been dying for a functional Arena reprint since the last 1 rotated. tutelage is meant for cheap aggro and is a lame attempt.
Bloodgift HAS the Arena ability, but its way over priced and on an easily removed 4/4 body.

I could have a Batterskull or freakin Imhotep (Vengeful Pharaoh) on turn 5 but no I'm guna drop a craptacular 4/4 that does nothing and gets blasted by Flame Slash? Are you serious?

How can you even put Obliterator in the same paragraph as Bloodfail Demon?

I think bloodgift is fine, a 4/4 body is not small at all. He is also superb with a lash, and flame slash sees no play. With spellskite, obliterator, blood gift and grave titam, you have a good amount of must deal with threats and a card who protects them. Combine that with early hand disruption and removsl, you have a fine deck.

For people who say having a high curve without mana excel is impossible, you are confusing tempo with control. You should try things out before discrediting them. As I said I have had good success with my current mbc in testing and will hopefuly have the same results in the comming post ban fnms and ptqs.

Bloodgift Demon and Phyrexian Obliterator both say "HAI THAR GRAVE TITAN, wish u didn't exist :'("

Bloodgift is way way better than obliterator for any MBC list, and grave titan flattens them both, and theres no real reason to run anything but titan right now. So long as the titans keep getting reprinted, all other finishers are showing up sucktacular. Even consecrated sphinx style bonkers have a hard time.

So apparently grave titan has the relentless rats ability? You can only run 4, not to mention he is a six drop. I am by no means saying he is bad, but you do have to run some other creatures. Also they curve fairly nice together. I'm so tired of people saying no other creatures are worth runing vs the titans. Apparantly we know Chapin's next song. Titans, better then all.
