    @mr shwiggy Us burn players won't bite, you might erupt in flames though (horrible pun intended). I for one like your idea and I have been fiddling around with the Sports Car Burn deck the past few weeks and I've actually dropped the current crits that are used in Burn in favor of Goblin Guide, Kiln Fiend, and Grim Lavamancer. I've heard all the arguments about Sligh and progressing from that to Goyf sligh to Zoo and the whole VCA thing that Burn does bring to the table, which I love, but I am enjoying the build I have right now. More testing needs to be done before I post any lists or the rest of my ideas, but I am leaning towards a more creature encouraged build as of now. To all the other major Burn thread posters in here, please test Kiln Fiend with me...it has done wonders in testing...I am currently in love with the card.

    I don't know why everyone is hating on Barbarian Ring these days. It's colorless, uncounterable damage. Yes it is a viable option for Wasteland and Stifle. But when it pops its soo satisfyingly good. The synergy with Shard Volley is fine, because you are able to sac the Ring to Volley if you need to or you can sac a mountain and get two cards in the graveyard to get closer to threshold. The self damage is negligible with Vortex. I see no problems with running two Rings with multiple Hellsparks, Volleys, Vortexs and even multiple self damaging sweepers. I wouldn't run more than two Rings though, and my deck uses 2 Rings, 3 Volleys, 3 Fireblast, 3 Hellspark, and usually 2-3 Vortex.

    Currently testing with FotBH, Im still leaning towards Vortex. Nothing major has come up yet, but I will continue to test with it.

    Don't MD Macabre, unless your meta is got a bunch of Reanimator. Just like if there is a bunch of artifacts in your meta you can MD StS...

    Looks interesting Smile Two questions:

    1) How has 3x Hellspark Elemental been together with 2x Barbarian Ring? I've lately started to consider a split between them, and I've nevery actually tested a list with both. I just dismissed it as suboptimal by inspection since you wouldn't want to unearth HE when trying to build threshold for BR, and they both fill pretty similar roles as "reach" against counter/discard. Do you find yourself passing on good opportunities to unearth HE because you want to BR first - has it ever been a problem?

    2) Have you tried Flames of the Blood Hand instead of Sulfuric Vortex at all? Lately I'm finding that Vortex isn't really negating life gain that effectively. D&T can Flickerwisp/ORing it and then just use their Jitte counters anyway. Survival can tutor for Pridemage and then attack with RWM anyway. Landstill can remove it and then end the game with a massive Zuran Orb.

    This is not to say that this will always happen, but in all these examples, a more unexpected FotBH could have been better. FotBH has a few more subtle advantages too. It makes it easier to leave Fallout mana open on turn 3 - useful for example against Merfolk where you don't know if a t4 Jitte or t4 lord#2 is going to hit the board. It's better with Barbarian Ring obviously, and also a better top deck than Vortex when you want to finish the opponent.

    I still think Sulfuric Vortex is a stellar card in the deck. I'm just wondering how FotBH really compares tactically. Vortex looks so much better on paper though.

    1.) I don't mind using both at all. They both provide reach and I like having the Rings there when I side out HE on occasion. Ive had the problem happen once where I needed to do both to win but only had enough mana available to do one or the other. This same situation was discussed when using both Grim Lavamancer and Barbarian Ring in RDW/Sligh. I don't usually have a problem with it. I still think the risk is spread evenly enough that they don't ever interact that inconsistent with each other.

    2.) I have not test FotBH...but now that you mention it I will. I've always been fond of Vortex, but both should work. I just hate getting beat by stupid lifegain, but is there enough consistent lifegain to warrant Vortex? FotBH isn't a permanent so it increases our VCA and it shuts of the various one shot life gainers in an unexpected fashion...however you have to be able to play it when they try to lifegain, so its definitely a metagame call. It all depends on what will be there. I would like to go through and discuss all the lifegaining options in Legacy play and see whether Vortex or FotBH are better options for each one.

    I am going to be testing it on MWS and in my playgroup soon.

    urdjur excellent primer bud! Sorry I didn't help with compiling any info or even posting lately, but I've been extremely busy. I'm just glad us burn players have someone like you to take the helm and set up a shiny new thread for us! I'm still testing for GP Columbus and made some minor tweaks to my Sports Car Burn. Here is my current list for those interested;

    Macabre is the correct GY hate spell to use in the SB. Just like Pithing Needle is the correct catch-all card to use in the SB. As is REB vs. Blue, those 9 spots are now staples IMO. I am still not sold on Keg (sometimes it becomes situational, being able to take out only one or two things, and its sometimes slow when u need 3-4 turns to build up counters...) and Disk (which I have always thought to be too slow, and I've never used a 4 cost card in my competitive burn...ever...so i tend to shy away from it). I have come back to Bridge as my answer to Zoo, although I dropped Flamebreak (5 Sweep MD is a bit much) from the main, I like the bridge surprise and versatility better. They never expect it and usually don't have the Pridemage or O-Ring to deal with it post board because they don't believe I play any artifacts. I am also completely sold with SS as the answer to artifacts and although more specific than Keg or Disk, I like the job it does. Still don't need combo hate imo either, not until Wizards gives us a better combo hating card than Pillar. Shusher was the last card I cut from the SB, it is just too narrow, FUN but narrow.

    I have decided that I am going to go to my first GP in Columbus at the end of July. I have my burn deck that could easily be finished with a playset of Chains and some PoP's. However in a higher level event I'm not sure how well Burn will work. I am just afraid I will get blown out of the water and that I'd be better off dropping some cash on a new deck. What is everyones thought?

    I will see ya there, and I will be taking my Sports Car Burn. I took Burn to GP Chicago (legacy) last year and went 6-3 with it. I lost to Merfolk (who had sided in Chill), WhiteStax (pffft..auto loss), and the mirror (with Spark Elementals and Hellspark Elementals). Beat everything else in the face (Goblins, Faerie Stompy, JankyPOS, Boros, Elves, Merfolk). I had my decklist and results posted many pages back.

    Id stick with Burn. Its easy to pilot in an open meta and if your good at talking/reading your opponent you can easily win games you shouldn't have. Many players are inexperienced at GP's and its fun to smash them in the face with Burn...brightens my day a bit.

    Yug: What's your experience with the Fallout/Flamebreak split? Do you ever find yourself boarding all five out?

    It depends on the matchup obviously, but if its control with blue, I still keep in the Fallouts. I don't think I've ever taken all 5 out though, with my lack of SB options against combo (which I don't see very often, and I still would prefer to race ANT anyday...) I find that I have to keep a few in. Plus the fact that they cost 3 helps against Chalice. I do find myself siding out Flamebreak alot more than I'd like to, but my meta is still in flux. I may even go back to testing StS main... I will be playing tons more in June/July on MWS...right now I truly like the MD build of Sports Car Burn, I want to wait on tweaking the board until I see what the meta looks like closer to GP Columbus.

    Also, I run Yug's build with a different SB (2 Everlasting Torment over 1 PoP and 1 Pithing Needle), so I wondered if that's the final name he went with. I definitely don't want any credit since I originally shunned it so much.

    Don't give me all the credit either, this was a combination of all our discussions in this board...(specifically include Urdjur and Eseph). I did go with Sports Car Burn as the name of the deck and here is the list I am continually playing on MWS and in my playgroup (GP Columbus is sooo far away though);

    Shattering spree vs. Smash to Smithereens? Discuss.

    I think shattering spree takes the cake vs. Dreadstill and chalice and trinishere. But often you are already siding out stuff for needles and whatever else you need and you start to lose critical burn spells.

    Also, does anyone have a better replacement for incinerate. I currently run 4 and I think that is too many? Perhaps split the spot between two incinerate and two StS?

    Suggestions?

    Like 40 pages behind on this discussion...but thats ok I like killing artifacts.

    Both StS and SS are great options. I used to run 2 StS maindeck, but thats when Affinity was floating around in my meta. Both make excellent sideboard cards. Smash is an instant and does damage, Spree can get around counters, multiple locks and hit multiple pests. Spree is generally accepted as the best of the two for the SB, but if you have a meta heavy with artifacts go ahead and run 2 StS main.

    I don't run any Incinerates in my legacy burn and haven't for about 3-4 years. That extra one mana is just too much imo. I'd rather have 2x Hellspark Elemental or 2x Fork (especially if you run 4x Fireblast and some Flame Rift MD) in that slot instead. However, if you take a look at this sports car burn list that the most active readers/posters of this board use (Eseph, urdjur...etc...) we run 3x Fireblast and 4x Shard Volley, just so we can have 20 Bolts. I highly recommend testing out this deck, pure speed and still has all the consistency you're used to.

    Just as a refresher, so nobody has to go back 10 pages, here's the basic shell of Sports Car Burn;

    To be honest I don't see enough combo in my meta to warrant the Pillar's so my SB has been looking like this;

    Not quite, actually - somebody did an in-depth statistical analysis a few pages back, and found that the fetches actually do very little to stop us drawing lands, while lowering aggro's clock against us.

    Not to mention they get shut down by Stifle... If you use fetches run sligh and use Grim Lavamancer too. but that's another thread.

    Keep the Jet's but I do only run 3. Jitte is the only card that truly worries me when I drop Vortex from main. Which is why I used to toy around with the 2x Smash to Smithereens MD

    @MRdown2urth,

    what 3/2 spilt of sweepers are you running 3/2 Fallout to Flamebreak? or the other way around? Which works better in your meta? To be honest, I'd suggest Incinerate over Flame Rift if you really want to drop Vortex. Or even 3x Hellspark...

    OMG that's the new deck name we've been looking for: "sports car burn"

    LOL! I like it! maybe we can narrow it down to an actual sports car like; Camaro Burn, or Miata Burn or Benz Burn or Mustang Burn or Lamborghini Burn or Ferrari Burn or GT Burn or Viper Burn...

    It seems kind of pointless to run SDT without shuffle effects. I thought about using SDT in a burn deck. It requires a continual mana investment to stay 3 deep into your deck. Without a way to shuffle away unwanted cards (like extra lands for instance) then you just have to keep spending 1 every turn to keep the unwanted cards off the top of the deck. It seems like it would be better just to use magma jet to improve card quality. Otherwise add fetchlands.
    Also magus of the moon makes many of your lands useless. I'm guessing the pillage is there to destroy basic lands after magus comes down, but I still think its not a good card here. Maybe more burn would be better.

    That last list I posted wasn't meant to be critiqued or challenged, so stop, just an idea deck for those clamoring for Brdige/Ankh/Blast. Magus turns my nonbasic into mountains, that doesnt hurt at all (helps Figure fot that matter) and what idiot would play Magus when it hurts them to play it (like I have 3 Factory and a few Ports owning the board, It's Moon time yaaay...). The deck requires a Bridge or Ankh to hit play, hence the SDT. But it was just an idea, so is Pillage. I've tested it a bunch on MWS...thats what I do (test lots of Red decks in my meta and on MWS), its fun to play but not seriously competitive. And never run fetches with Ankh...ever, its quite painful. Remember I've been using Red and playing Burn/Sligh/RDW decks competitvely since I began playing Magic in the mid 90's...don't critique me if I don't ask for it (which is why I wrote that disclaimer before I posted the decklist). Take it and run with it if you like, but this isn't the board to post about it... This is a board to talk about Burn and Burn alone. Contact me through PM if you are actually interested in working on it or any other decklist that is red...

    @Tzunamii

    Decklist looks solid bro (exactly like urdjur's). I too enjoy the Shard Volleys, it does transform this deck into a sports car. What does your sideboard look like?

    Not trying to stray too far from Burn...but for all of you looking for a Legacy Burning Bridges or Shrapnel Blast idea, here is a quick list I threw together. I've been trying to make this deck work FOREVER, and in today's meta I haven't been successful with it...but feel free to try it out.

    Pillage vs. Dwarven Blastminer was my main concern in this deck when testing. Also Scroll and Port feel a tad old in todays meta. Plays like a control deck, plays slow, must land an Ankh and Bridge to beat aggro though...unless you can control their lands early and for long enough. Most good control decks can wriggle free of your hold, and most combo will be too fast, but in a casual meta, this deck is a ton of fun to play, very annoying for your opponent.

    Are you playing pillar against combo? And if so do you think 2 is worth it as you cannot mull to it game 2? Either dedicate 4 of something against combo to improve that MU or forget it and go with something that solidifies one of your MU's that is currently a close call but that you are more certain you could see a lot of. I know you mentioned you see a lot of artifacts, maybe a 4th Shattering Spree would be better.

    To be honest, I always feel as if I can race the Storm/ANT combos better than relying on Pillar. I've considered also 2x Smash to Simthereens in that spot too. I just posted this version of my SB as an option for someone going into an unknown meta. so that way you have everything.

    @urdjur

    Your argument is sound on the Crypt vs. Relic...however I think the speed factor still wins out for me. Lets say its turn three and your holding the relic, and they have the graveyard in prime postion. However you also have a few burn spells left to point at their dome. I'd rather have the Crypt come down and still hit them with multiple burn spells than waste the mana on a relic and have to slow my clock down by one turn waiting to use my burn next turn. I also really love my Barbed Rings...lol. I really think its a moot point, it really comes down to playstyle, both work for what we need them to do. Who knows, I havent seen combo in my meta in awhile anyway, I may just drop the Pillars and add 2x Relic so I have the 2/2 split also...

    @urdjur

    I made some minor tweaks to my deck...and I finally have my working sideboard too. This is the first time I have ever (years man, years) left Ensnaring Bridge out of my sideboard...my decks name used to be BurnSideBridge...now I don't know what Im gonna name it...

    Since I dropped E. Bridge I felt like I had to put more sweepers MD, hence the 3/2 split of Fallout/Flamebreak. I like both, but prefer Fallout cause of instant speed and the uncounterability and hits flyers, Flamebreak is best against pumped elves and zoo. I think a split is needed. I only run 2 Vortex because its not something I want to see every game, it really is only a static Flame Rift with a LifegainOFF or a visual clock to my speedy virtual clock. I also dropped Magma Jet to 3, I have been wanting to do this for awhile now, multiple Jets in a game can be detrimental to the gameplan. I have never been a fan of Disk or Keg, they just are too slow in my opinion. I believe Needle is a better catch all card anyway. I have more artifact decks in my meta, hence the 3 Needles and 3 Sprees. I also run with 2 Shusher and a 1/1 split of Pyroblast/REB, these 4 are the best answers against blue + they can get around Meddling Mage if need be. I almost did the same for 1/1 with Crypt and Relic, but I have always liked Crypt over Relic for the following reasons; Relic is slower (by 2 mana and if you need to hit their grave you usually want to hit it immediately, and you dont have to play the crypt out of hand until u need to), Relics first ability doesn't target a card it targets a player (meaning they select the card, so you're not going to hit any important things like Bridge from Below, and against Tarmo their going to take out something they have multiples of). Also the Crypt keeps my Threshold for my barbarian rings while Relic makes em dead cards... Those 3 reasons are why I have Crypt>Relic...if you really like the cantrip then go with Relic, or go with a 1/1, 2/2 split if you see Meddling Mages in your meta. Just my 2cents. I will be testing with this deck a bunch on MWS during the next few weeks. Does anyone know when the next major Legacy tournament is?
