I think that oath of jace is a shoe in for my build. I might consider cutting mull drifter for it because 3> 5 Cmc and the game is usually decided by turn 4 or 5 in my playgroup. I could see oath of Gideon doing ok in more casual playgroups but it doesn't do Enough in my list. I like the new manowar as well as an answer to an early wanderer or other such troublesome commander.
Any thoughts on including idllic tutor ? It fetches two of the most powerful spells in my deck in stasis and treachery. I'm worried that fetching either of these early is risky but I can't help but feeling that having access to a statis lock at 5+mana with idyllic tutor is useful. It's foil too
So I did a pretty big overhaul on my Brago after some testing. I had won a number of the 4 player FFA games but I realized there were a lot of dead cards in my deck. I'm shifting the focus of my deck to be almost entirely on Brago so every card that is included must either be extremely powerful on its own or have innate synergy with Brago. Would love some feedback. Noteable exclusions are paralex wave, tide, and act of authority because I can't seem to get my hands on either one.
I'm seriously wondering how people are building their decks if they can't consistently get the right colours of mana in their 2/3 colour decks without a swathe of fetchlands. I mean, seriously, even in non-green decks (Thus cutting off access to cards like Farseek, Kodama's Reach et al) there's still a LOT of mana fixing available (Wayfarer's Bauble, Solemn Simulacrum, Burnished Hart) and so many dual/tri-lands, I really can't see how one ever ends up with inconsistent mana bases even without fetches. Most of my decks are fetch-less (Rasputin only plays on-color fetches and they actually seem to HURT the deck due to it's focus on Snow mana, and Omnath plays whatever he can) and I very rarely run into mana issues. Heck, I don't even have original duals save for a Taiga. Literally the only things Fetches make better are topdeck rearrangers, Landfall triggers (but it doesn't make unplayable ones playable, it simply makes already great ones even better) and a few specific cards (Titania & Crucible, most notably). I'm seriously not buying into the argument that it'd hurt 2/3-color EDH decks. At least not on any sizeable scale.
You mention Wayfarer's Bauble, Solemn Simulacrum, Burnished Hart as examples of cards that you use to help fix mana in a multicoloured deck. I do not have a single commander deck that runs any of these cards due to how slow and inefficient they are. Its debatable whether fetches are better than the original dual lands (as they are made better themselves by each other's existence) but its not debatable that they are the best tools in multicoloured deck's arsenal of manafixing. This si also discounting the insane synergy they have with EDH allstars such as Deathrite shaman, life from the loam, crucible of worlds and the various library manipulation cards.
I build my decks with an efficient curve in mind that want access to any of their respective colors of mana on each turn. The easiest way to do this is through the use of all of the available fetchlands and the the ABU Duals and Shocks which I specifically sought out singleton copies of each so that I would always have a solid mana base for whatever commander deck I wanted to play.
This change unfairly targets the more so called "Competitive" players which I would consider myself to be in so far as I like to build the most optimized lists that I possibly can. Sometimes, choice of a Commander based on their ability can be secondary to the color identity by which they provide which is an occurrence that was much more common before Wizard's started printing cards specifically targeted to the format. Many old school edh players will remember running Rubinia Soulsinger etc. just to have access to the bant color pie. Ironically, this change would likely cause myself and many other player's to simply pick up a 5C commander so that we would have access to better mana than if we were to run a 3C commander while allowing us to also cherry pick some of the best cards of each colour. This would be a bad change to the format as it would eliminate both meaningful decisions for commander choice and commander diversity in more competitive playgroups.
The fact that the moderators are so in favor of these changes is a worrying trend as it leads me to believe that this decision has already been made behind closed doors and it will only be a matter of time before it will become public.
I'm confused by your reply. Shouldn't gameplay experiences be the single most important factor to consider when making rule changes to a trading card game? Maybe I'm missing something.
I wouldn't talk about biases (glasses houses and all of that) but would have to commend you for not removing my comments as I can see how they would be inflammatory.
Safe to say myself and my playgroup would completely ignore this idiotic rule change if it were to be made. Rule changes based on "aesthetics" just shows how far from reality the rule committee members truly are. Do they even play EDH or have any inkling to how the format works? To ignore the many pros that the fetchlands bring to deck building in terms of mana fixing and synergies with cards such as Lotus Cobra, Oracle of Mul Daya, etc.. its absurd.
Do you realize just how many players intentionally won't run off-color fetches in their EDH decks because they clash with the flavor? You can call the rule change idiotic (should it happen), you can say that the gameplay reasons for such a change are all negative, but you can't call the Rules Committee out of touch with the players. And saying "Do they even play EDH or have any inkling to how the format works?" undermines your entire post.
Maybe I don't because my playgroup which consists of about 20 people at our local LGS all run fetchlands regardless of whether they align with the color pie perfectly or to Sheldon's liking. If we are going to make a balance change based on aesthetics we should have an argument in defense of being able to run off colour fetches. For example, one of the primary reasons I even play EDH is because of nostalgia and a personal connection to my cards. I'm super busy with non-magic related things so I dont really have time to keep up with other formats. Honestly it would make sense for me to just sell my cards and walk away from it from a time perspective but I have an attachment to the collection that I've been creating since I was ten years old.
Now, because of Sheldon's aesthetic tastes I won't be able to run my signed Polluted Delta in my Brago deck. Every time I play the signed delta I think of waiting in line at GP San Jose to get the chance to meet my favorite artist. The signed Delta then fetches a tundra which is a card that holds a lot of value for me as it was involved in a trade where I parted ways with two of my favorite cards (korean bribery and misdirection).

On the value of aesthetics:

What on earth could Sheldon possibly gain from this other than being able to enforce his particular brand of aesthetics on the world?
That's all that matters to him. He is the king of a small Kingdom, and he never leaves the palace to walk amongst the peasants. He sits all day long at his gilded table talking with the others in the royal family, none of whom have so much as seen another human's face if it wasn't employed or living at the castle. When he sees that copper plates clash with the color of his table, he decrees that nobody in his kingdom ever use plates that are not colored silver or gold, and his advisors helpfully add that wooden plates cannot simply be painted. If he spots a church mouse running along the floor, he asks the servants "what is this nasty thing?" in a fit of fear and rage. When they reply "a church mouse, sire" he demands that all churches be burned to the ground, and his nepotistic advisors say "you should execute all the priests, too!".
The worst feeling I get when I play Brago is having a bunch of permanents with ETB/LTB effects, casting Brago, and having to wait a turn to activate them. Lightning Greaves and Hall of the Bandit Lord are your friends. You run more equipment than me, but I'd guess that the downside of the shroud is outweighed by the power of connecting with Brago more frequently.
Those two cards are on the top of my "want" list. I've realized that connecting with Brago early and often is the best way to play this deck and I want to includes that allow me to do so. I recently swapped out coalition relic for azorius signet for this very reason. What do you run to protect Brago?
Elesh Norn is on the chopping block but small creature decks are fairly popular in my meta. Elesh Norn hoses these decks and interacts favorably with some of my token producers. I would be open to removing her.
I'm not too sold on archaeomancer as it costs 4 mana but I might try it out and switch snapcaster out for it.
Top is an interesting one that might be ok. I don't have a ton of shuffle effects but I guess it works well with strionic resonator. If i can get my hands on my copy I'll consider adding it to my deck.
I've found 4 equipments to be plenty for stoneforge mystic especially since 3 are incredibly powerful.
I'd like to submit my list to get some feedback. I've attempted to cut down on most cards that do not directly benefit from flickering with Brago unless they are obscenely powerful. Treachery has been an all star for me and I wouldn't think of playing brago without it. Between treachery and the Mana Rocks I feel that I am essentially taking three turns in one once I get to midgame. I'm heavily considering cutting the opposition in favor of a stasis
The goal of this deck is to play permanents that interact favorably with Brago.
Creatures: Stoneforge Mystic: Fetches 3 great equipments and comes down early. Great when blinked and can turn any of the small creatures in this deck into a threat. Snapcaster Mage: Efficient creature that can flashback a key spell such as enlightened tutor or time walk. While this is a blue staple, this one is on the chopping block due to to how few instants/sorceries I run. Wall of Omens: Can prevent a small amount of damage but more importantly draws a card with Brago. This will be a common theme. Heliod's Pilgrim: Included after I realized just how insane treachery is with Brago. Can also fetch Reality Acid for removal or Pentarch Ward for Card Draw. Trinket Mage: This deck relies on the broken 1cmc mana rocks and this will tutor them for you. Aven Mindcensor: Can be useful to shut down tutoring but I have considering cutting this card as it doesn't have much synergy with the rest of the deck. Sea Gate Oracle: Great early game card filtering and works great with Brago. Phyrexian Metamorph: Utility card that can ramp or copy any useful creature or artifact. Excellent with Brago to always copy what I want to after Brago triggers. Solemn Simulacrum: U/W lacks access to land ramp so I included this as a way to decrease the reliance on mana rocks. Clever Impersonator: Same idea as Phyrexian Metamorph. More costly but more versatile. Venser, Shaper Savant: Overall Utility and a combo piece which can bounce every permanent with brago and Strionic Resonator. This deck is light on counterspells and Venser can act as one in a pinch. Restoration Angel: Protection for Brago and an efficient body with flash. Can work to double our ETB triggers when we get a Brago Trigger. Glen Elendra Archmage: This deck is light on countermagic and this shores up this weakness nicely. Mulldrifter: card advantage engine with Brago Master of Waves: Elementals survive if we blink Master of Waves with Brago. Army in a can and works well with opposition. Reveillark: Great card but on the chopping block as its effect is a bit expensive and I haven't found it to be too necessary. Still provides tremendous advantage because of the number of creatures that it can return from the graveyard. Karmic Guide: Same idea as Reveillark but I'm considering cutting it as well due to how expensive it is. Sun Titan: Great recursion engine that can most importantly return all of our crucial mana rocks and utility enchantments. Frost Titan Duplicant Angel of Serenity Myr Battlesphere Elesh Norn, Grandcenobite Sphinx of Uthuun
Hi everyone. I'm working on this maelstrom deck to try and get it as streamlined and competitive as possible. This is the first real commander deck that I've built with the intention of fine tuning and actually considering each card choice. Budget isn't too much of a restriction. This deck seeks to win through ramping and then assembling one of the numerous combos.
I am so jealous.. this tourney sounds awesome! Like jack stated I think the best decks will be vault decks since it is a cheap 2 card combo that is easy to both tutor and recur if its disrupted.
I imagine u/b will be the best combination as it gives you access to the most tutors as well as targeted discard and counterspells. I actually see thoughtseize and duress being extremely playable in this format as all the cards are so game breaking.
I don't think generals will be relevant at all as most games will be close to ending before standard generals can even be cast. Maybe you could try rofellos, erayo or braids out? Rofellos is extremely powerful as he guarantees you 6 mana on turn 3. Green also gives you access to the best artifact hate, and you get to play prime time which will be fetching you strip mines and wastelands to take care of workshops and academies. I'm not sure how good braids or erayo would be but I feel like people will not be packing much creature hate as they will expect more artifact based combo decks to show up.
I dont really spend money because I construct decks out of my collection/cube. That being said I've probably spent a couple of thousand dollars in order to have my collection..
