The problem with all of these (and most attempts at creating a "balanced" Lotus) is that they are either completely unplayable garbage until someone finds a way to break them and then they are just, in fact, broken. Just look at Lion's Eye Diamond. The card was laughed at and mocked until someone figured out how to use it as a Lotus, now it's arguably the best mana accelerent in the Storm deck.

It's nice to see so many ideas in this thread that I also had on my own. I just started tinkering with this shell. I have to say, I don't know how I feel about Evolution yet. Having the toolbox is nice but I feel part of this decks strength is playing the value game, and Eldritch doesn't really supplement that game super well outside of getting the combos with it.

Blake Belladona 2(U/B)(U/B)
Legendary Creature - Faunus Rogue (M)
Whenever Blake Belladona becomes the target of a spell or ability your opponents control, create a colorless Clone creature token with “This creature’s power is equal to Blake Belladona’s power and its toughness is equal to Blake Belladona’s toughness.”
Whenever a Clone enters the battlefield you may change the target of a spell or ability with a single target to Clone.
2/3

So basically this card has better hexproof but in a unique way. It would be simpler to just make 2/3 Clones instead of having to worry about tracking issues with remembering which Clones go to which Blake.

Rage Animist 2RR
Creature - Elemental Shaman [R]
At the beginning of combat on your turn, put a blaze counter on Rage Animist, then create a 1/0 red Elemental creature token for each blaze counter on Rage Animist. Exile them at the end of combat.
Elementals you control get +1/+1 and have haste.
Hatred grows and my fire burns brighter.
2/1[/b

This is a cool combination of Goblin Rabblemaster and Master of Waves. It's not typical for Lords to pump themselves but it's not unheard of however giving this guy Haste himself makes him VERY strong, maybe too strong.

Invoker of Souls 2RG
Creature - Human Shaman (R)
Other Shaman creatures you control get +1/+1.
RG, t: Put target Shaman creature card from you hand onto the battlefield. It gets +3/+3 and gains haste until end of turn. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step.
"My kindred souls burn with such power and vibrance. They must be unleashed so that they can express their full might."
3/3

Very cool lord. It's awkward that there is a double pump on here. I would have preferred that the Invoker has some other ability besides the general +1/+1 ability.

Generator Siphoner 1UR
Creature - Human Rogue (U)
Prowess
Whenever Generator Siphoner deals combat damage to a player, tap target land that player controls. It doesn’t untap during its controller’s next untap step. Then untap target land you control.
The Arcanotechs of Fordyna often hire saboteurs to redirect the power grids of their rivals.

Cool card. I like the take one red land denial by not actually destroying lands. No power/toughness make the card hard to judge.

Commander of Opal Order 1WW
Creature - Human Soldier (R)
First strike, Lifelink
At the beginning of each combat, choose target creature. You may have Commander of Opal Order power becomes equal to that creature until end of turn.
1/3

This card is very cool and the flavor resonates well. Well done.

At the beginning of your upkeep, create a 1/1 white Soldier creature token.
2/2

This is quite the lord. Being a double lord at 4 mana is already quite good but this guy ALSO bring a 3/3 with him. This card is quite pushed, perhaps too much so.

Yea I am certainly considering having some other effect on flashes. Tap target creature was the first idea but I wanted to see if a card pushed enough (permanent Control Magic) would be good enough when enabled to not feel bad when an actual blank.

As for Raki, you wouldn't be able to ambush attackers right? As they would have to be tapped to be attacking (obvious Vigilance aside). Also, Switcheroo is blue, is that not considered in blues color pie anymore?

I agree, two of these is too much for the same set. I'll probably push 1 design into the next set.

This reminds me of losing damage on the stack. Everyone complained about how it dumb downed the game because "What competitive player didn't understand the rules?" and "Now Mogg Fanatic is terrible.".

In reality, the card having a single CMC when not on the stack makes LOGICAL sense and removes unnecessary rules baggage to split cards.

posted a message on Supreme Court Justice Nominees Gorsuch and Garland

In less crazy times, Gorsuch would have been confirmed easily. (In 1986, Scalia was confirmed 98-0.) He is from everything I've seen an excellent judge and near-ideal candidate for the position in terms of qualifications, intelligence, and temperament -- honestly not the sort of person I expected Trump to nominate. Does he hold conservative political views? Yes. Of course. But that's how our democracy works. The American people decided that they wanted a conservative to be the guy picking the judges. So if the Democrats were trying to block Gorsuch simply on ideological grounds, I'd be... well, filled with a frustration of a weary and familiar sort, because it's the same thing that they tried to do to Roberts and Alito, and that the GOP tried to do to Sotomayor and Kagan, in this increasingly dysfunctional government of ours.

The stolen seat complicates matters, though. I have a lot more sympathy for Dems blocking a nominee who -- whatever his qualifications -- should never have been appointed. You never want to just let your opponent get away with a dirty trick like that. But on the other hand, that dirty trick represents yet another escalation in the dysfunction, and responding in kind makes it the new normal. I want that even less. And on practical grounds this does not seem like a smart battle to fight. What outcome do the Democrats expect here if they block Gorsuch? To see Trump re-nominate Garland, or nominate a pro-choice judge? That's never going to happen. It'd be hard for any plausible future nominee to be any better than Gorsuch, and they could easily be a lot worse. To keep the seat empty for another four years until a Democrat is in the White House? One year was outrageous enough; four would be a frank admission that the system is broken (and, of course, the Republicans could just do it back to them again). So in the end, galling as it is under the circumstances to give the Republicans what they wanted, I think the best move here is to confirm Gorsuch, take a baby step towards returning the judicial confirmation process to business as usual, and look for some less self-destructive way to make the GOP pay for their stunt.

This is exactly how I feel. It feels awful to just let the GOP get their way and try to be "the bigger man" but at the same time what are the Dems gaining by fighting besides becoming "the opposition party", something they besmirched the GOP for being for the past 8 years.

It could have been a common 23 years ago, before NWO was even a glink in MaRo's eye. If that's what you're going for, then it's fine as is. Otherwise, it should be uncommon due to complexity. Shrinking Touch is amazing. The lenticular design here is great. A+.

Concentrated Might gives me a headache. I understand what it's doing (basically turning -1/-1 counters into +1/+1 counters). I dont think this card is particularly worth the trouble it will inevitably bring.

posted a message on Supreme Court Justice Nominees Gorsuch and Garland
On March 16th 2016 President Obama nominated Merrick Garland to fill the vacant seat left my Justice Scalia. The GOP blocked Merrick Garland from a vote and refused to even meet with him citing that Supreme Court seats have never been filled on election years. However, this is not a rule and in the 20th century only twice has a president failed to nominate a justice and have that justice be confirmed and neither of those times has left a vacant seat on the Court. Now, over a year later, with the longest vacancy in nearly five decades, the seat is still open and President Trump has nominated Neil Gorsuch to fill the seat.

Did Republicans steal the nomination?
Should Democrats try to block Gorsuch?
Should there be a formal rule that Supreme Court seats NOT be filled on election years?

posted a message on RANDOM CARD DUMP Pt.1
Lots of fine cards here but here are a few I'll comment on:

Stoned Killer: Besides the hilarious name, this card is quite good. Goblin Guide is one of the best creatures ever and Stoned Killer is almost on par. It might be a bit too good.

Forest Dryads: This card just always makes two mana right? You can just activate precombat?

Killing Time: This card is VERY good in midrange mirrors. You get a free attack, a fog, and get to draw cards?! Feels close to a Cryptic Command.

posted a message on Time as a Resource
Assuming these cards work mechanically (like if you cast two of them you skip the next two turns) some of these are simply too busted.

Jubilee: This card is probably fine but pretty unfun. Either you completely bury your opponent by Reno-ing or the 20 life doesn't matter and you lose anyway.

Halt: This card is too good. It basically reads U: Counter target spell, that player draws a card and uptaps all of their permanents. I know it seems like that is fine, because you give your opponent gets a whole lot of room to play with, but that's only if the card is used reactively to be a control card and not a proactively as a combo card.

End of Days: Plague Wind is really stong card. I think this card is close on power level but is really unfun to play. Either you are straight slaughtering your opponent or your Plague Wind ends up getting YOU killed as your opponent gets a ton of time to unload on you.

Reckoning: Actually broken. It basically reads RR draw seven and in a format like vintage or legacy, you WILL win the game that turn.

Time for Planting: Literally a Scapeshift that doesn't require getting to 7 lands. You can cast this on Turn 3 off some ramp spells and just win. Losing a turn doesn't do anything here.

Lotus: As LED has taught me, no version of Lotus is safe and I feel the same here.

Yea Nenrir's second ability feels like a color bleed but black has done direct damage before, it just normally gains life with it.

The whole point of black direct damage is "it's different from red direct damage because it drains life. The only remotely modern counterexample I can think of is Corpse Lunge and it is clear to see where that one gets its black from.

It's certainly a bleed. I guess the question we have to ask is "Is the bleed worth the simplicity of the ability or should I make it more "black" but more complex?"

Quote from shinquickman »
Thadin: Four P/T worth of creatures is no joke, but I guess this is justifiable with how tame the starting loyalty and the other abilities are. I'm not wild about this kind of card design, though. Most planeswalkers are predisposed to using their plus abilities anyway. The interesting part comes with making their other abilities more attractive.

Nenrir: Every single repeatable source of 3 damage to creatures thus far has either been stuck on 6+ mana permanents (Inferno Titan, Ugin, the Spirit Dragon) or requires additional costs or setup (Raka Sanctuary, Ral Zarek). The card that probably comes closest is Skysovereign, Consul Flagship, but even that needs some set up. Thunderclapping every turn is very oppressive, so this card would have to get priority testing to make sure that it doesn't bully out too many other cards.

Nenrir is certainly pushed but several of the cards you mention can dome players. I agree he will have to be playtested.

Well +1/+1 counters and Hydra's are basically PB&J. The rate on this can get pretty absurd, especially for a white creature (green should have the biggest dudes). Still, the challenge demands this be a Hydra and I think you hit that on the head.

Whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, you may create a 2/2 black and white Zombie creature token with lifelink and deathtouch.
4/4

This card is certainly interesting but I feel misses the spirit of the challenge of creating the iconic creature in another color. Nothing about this card really speaks "Sphinx" to me.

Illusory Hydra enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.
When Illusory Hydra becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it.
UU: Return Illusory Hydra to its owner's hand.
0/0

This feels like such a cop-out for the challenge lol. The card does feel very Hydra-y in the same way that Phantasmal Bear feel like a green Bear and how Phantasmal Drake feels like a red Drake. The final ability feels kind of tacked on.

posted a message on [New Mechanic] Viability check: Elite
This is interesting. A couple issues are:

-Assuming there is even one of these that are Legacy playable, it feels automatic to just promote the first one you cast, as you certainly won't have multiple, different "Elite" creatures. This isn't necessarily bad, but there is basically no decision tree here and I have a distaste for cards and mechanics that offer a decision, but that decision is nearly always prechosen for you.

-I am a firm believer that adding a supertype needs to be a last resort when designing mechanics, as there is usually a better work somewhere else. For example, using a keyword here seems possible.

Promote (Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player you may promote this creature to a commander)

The above mechanic encourages proactive gameplay, makes you work a bit for the payoff, and most importantly doesn't carry the baggage of a supertype. Obviously, a combat damage trigger isn't the only route, this was simply the first thing that popped into my head.

Why not just give target creature deathtouch until end of turn?

posted a message on Polycounter
It could certainly still be mono-u, as I think they still share "Polymorphing". That said, I like this being multi-colored. I don't know how strong the card is, the fact that you have to cast a creature and this in the same turn means you are probably still spending 4 mana and you most likely aren't able to build your deck in a way to only hit stuff like Emrakul. It's certainly interesting, though probably not playable at a competitive level. However, EDH tables and casuals always love this effect.

Bad Tundra is just a strictly worse Hallowed Fountain or Prairie Stream. I would rather you design a cycle with some kind of ability to untap it.

The White Untapper cycle is interesting, though I don't know if there would ever be a reason to run them over a Basic Plains. I get that you could untap a Tundra and get a U or you could untap a land that produces multiple mana (through auras or other means), but the upside of that is not worth the downside of having a hand full of lands that don't add mana.

The Lotus creates the most swingy version of feel bad scenarios. If you win the flip, especially early in the game, your opponent feels robbed because you got lucky. If you lose the flip, then you feel bad because the game is over. The card just isn't fun.

The land is interesting but I do agree the downside isn't enough. Maybe have it ETBT?

I think a 6/6 for 5 at rare is perfectly acceptable and I do believe this should be rare, as the whole deals damage equal to its toughness ability is slightly complex and also having a legend at uncommon is just odd. (Yes, Kamigawa did it but that doesn't make it any less strange)

I never noticed this before, but did they change the actual effect of the card? The original printing says to bury the tokens (with "bury" being an old simplification of "destroy + cannot be regenerated"). While tokens that die are exiled, wouldn't the original wording trigger cards that say "when a creature you control dies" while the new wording would not? Are the old ones considered to have errata text?

6th Edition errated it to exile apparently

I don't know where this mentality that DC is constantly rebooting comes from. DC has had only reboots in it's entire run. Crisis on Infinite Earths (85-86). Flashpoint (2011). And now Rebirth and Rebirth IS NOT a reboot. It is taking parts of the New 52 and remerging them with the "real" DC Universe.

Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis were just arcing events, but not reboots.

I always thought the whole "do something with this one specific card" was cute design in moderation. For example, the Peer through Depths, Sift through Sands, Reach through Mists interaction in Kamigawa was fun and interesting.

The problem doing these enmasse is that it is about as parasitic as you can get.
