I never noticed this before, but did they change the actual effect of the card? The original printing says to bury the tokens (with "bury" being an old simplification of "destroy + cannot be regenerated"). While tokens that die are exiled, wouldn't the original wording trigger cards that say "when a creature you control dies" while the new wording would not? Are the old ones considered to have errata text?

6th Edition errated it to exile apparently

I don't know where this mentality that DC is constantly rebooting comes from. DC has had only reboots in it's entire run. Crisis on Infinite Earths (85-86). Flashpoint (2011). And now Rebirth and Rebirth IS NOT a reboot. It is taking parts of the New 52 and remerging them with the "real" DC Universe.

Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis were just arcing events, but not reboots.

I always thought the whole "do something with this one specific card" was cute design in moderation. For example, the Peer through Depths, Sift through Sands, Reach through Mists interaction in Kamigawa was fun and interesting.

The problem doing these enmasse is that it is about as parasitic as you can get.

Linvala is one of the biggest Trump for the mirror. You want your own Linvala plus ways to deal with your opponent's Linvala.

Pontiff kills dorks. It's great in the mirror.

Voices tend to be poor. They don't help you combo nor do they help you maintain momentum like Witness does. Cut both of those. Spellskite is okay, since you have two you could stand to cut one. I personally think you want 1 available to tutor up so you can protect your combo/Linala. Pridemage is bad in the mirror. Even though Witness is not terrible, you can trim one if you still need to cut.

posted a message on February CCL: Final Poll!
This months theme was designing cards that inspire some sort of synergy, symbiosis, ect ect.

For the finals, each player had to time to design a Commander product! They had to design each of the following cards:

-A general with a allied-pair color identity that clearly exemplifies the theme of your commander product.
-Another that can be used as a substitute general (so it plays into the same gameplan as the deck, but in a different way).
-A support card for your commander product
-A card that contains a new, multiplayer friendly mechanic
-A land card that fits into your new product.
-A card that can fit in ANY commander deck

    And onto the submissions:

Whenever Neferak of Unx is dealt damage, put that many cards from the top of your library into your graveyard.

    2/6

    Substitute General:
    Ghoulstitcher Gunter UB
Legendary Creature - Human Wizard (R)
As an additional cost to cast Zombie creature spells, you may exile a creature card from your graveyard. If you do, that creature enters the battlefield with a number of +1/+1 counters on it equal to the power of the exiled creature card.

    Support Card:

I can't possibly imagine that a standard with a 5/5 haste for 3 that dodges removal is one that I'd want to play in - especially if it's open to anyone who just needs to put forests into their deck. Yikes.

Legend is not suggesting that these should be printed, but rather OP doesn't understand what kind of cards make an impact in Modern. Modern, for the most part, is a synergy driven format and cards with a ton of raw power don't regularly find homes.

For example, Kitchen Finks is a strong card but it's not breaking any ceilings, however the deck it sees most play in utilizes it because it synergizes with the decks gameplan (and combo) better than something more objectively powerful like Knight of the Reliquary.

For the final round of February I understood that my "product" is one commander deck, so all parts of that product go into one deck.
However "-A card that contains a new, multiplayer friendly mechanic" doesn't explicitly state that it has to be part of the product.
Is it still supposed to go into that one deck?

Sorry for splitting hairs, but this is rather important for what I can do and the task is hard enough for me to check all options. :p

No, because there's been a lot of dropouts.

And I'm going to go ahead and design a card, then decide it's one of the enemy color cards and THEN make the 'chosen color' card. Because **** da rulez!!1one

Edit: Green is primary. But did I design it first? You'll never know!

    Willowglen Archmage 3GG
    Creature - Elf Wizard (R)
If you would put a creature or land card from your library into your hand, you may put it onto the battlefield instead.
    3/4

    Bogknoll Archmage 2BB
    Creature - Human Wizard (R)
If a creature card would be returned from your graveyard to your hand, you may put it onto the battlefield instead.
    3/2

    Mistbank Archmage 1UU
    Creature - Merfolk Wizard (R)
If a creature would be returned from the battlefield to a player's hand, you may put it on the bottom of its owner's library instead.
    2/3

I wish Mistbank would put the creature back into play to mirror the other two. It may seem strange, for you to bounce creature only to have them put back, but it could make interesting interactions with stuff like Peel from Reality. Still, very cool.

    Quote from Ink-Treader »
    Primary color: White

    Keeper of the Pale 1WW
    Creature - Spirit Cleric (R)
    Flying
XWW: Exile X target creatures you control. Return those creatures to the battlefield under your control at the beginning of the next end step.
    2/3

    Enemy Colors

    Netherdelve 2BB
    Enchantment (R)
2B, Sacrifice a creature: Choose target creature card in your graveyard. At the beginning of your next upkeep, put that creature card on top of your library and return the sacrificed card to the battlefield under your control.
"The dead are always willing to lend a hand to the living. It's getting the living to lend a hand to the dead that's challenging."
    -Mavos, psychopomp

    Soulfire Channeler 4RR
    Creature - Elemental Shaman (R)
    Haste, menace
2RR: Put a token that's a copy of target creature you control onto the battlefield. That token has haste. Sacrifice it at the beginning of the next end step.
    4/3

These cards are very interesting and have a loose mechanical tie but I do think the tie is a little too loose. The black one is also needlessly complex for what could have been a very simple ability.

Still, an interesting take on the challenge.

    Quote from IcariiFA »
    Necrotic Atlas 5BB
    Creature - Zombie Giant (M)
At the beginning of your upkeep, if you have fewer then seven cards in your graveyard, put cards from the top of your library into your graveyard equal to the difference.
B, Exile a card from your graveyard: Target creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn.
    7/7

    Sower Atlas 5GG
    Creature - Plant Giant (M)
At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control fewer than seven creatures, put 1/1 green Saporling creature tokens onto the battlefield equal to the difference.
G, Sacrifice a creature: Target creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.
    7/7

    Immortal Atlas 5WW
    Creature - Spirit Giant (M)
At the beginning of your upkeep, if you have less than seven life, gain life equal to the difference.
W, Pay 1 life: Target permanent gains indestructible until end of turn.
    7/7

I love these. I would have prefereed they be a little less cycle-ish, as you could easily fit in the other colors here, but the designs are so refreshing that it honestly doesn't matter. These are the kind of cards that are awesome Mythics and would be so much for at and EDH table. Great job.

I did a similar idea before

    Dawn of the Righteous 4W
    Sorcery (U)
Put two 2/2 white Knight creature tokens with vigilance onto the battlefield.
Purity - If only white mana is spent to cast Dawn of the Righteous, put two 4/4 white Angel creature tokens with flying onto the battlefield instead.

    Objective Thinking 3U
    Instant (C)
    Draw 2 cards.
Purity - If only blue mana was spent to cast Objective Thinking, draw 4 cards instead.

    Inject Madness 4B
    Sorcery (R)
Look at target player's hand and choose up to two cards from it. That player discards those cards.
Purity - If only black mana was spent to cast Inject Madness, that player discards their hand instead.

    Wave of Sparks 2R
    Sorcery (U)
Wave of Sparks deals 3 damage to target creature or player.
Purity - If only red mana was spent to cast Wave of Sparks, it deals 3 damage to each creature or player instead.

    Gigantisize 1G
    Instant (C)
Target creature gets +3/+3 until end of turn.
Purity - If only green mana was spent to cast Gigantisize, target creature gets +5/+5 until end of turn instead.

    ------------------

The designs are very rough but you get the idea. Making it an ability work this effect more flexible as well.

Each round will tackle a different kind of relationship; ranging from other cards to other players.

For the third round, you will be designing a card that isn't looking to help you win the game, but help others. In 4-Man EDH, there is a deck archetype called "Group Hug". For those who are unaware, the Group Hug deck is one that does not seek to win, but rather be support for the other players so they will beat up each other and leave you alone while you further set up to maybe win the game once they have slaughtered each other. Examples of these kinds of cards are Temple Bell, Tempting Wurm, and Phelddagrif.

Challenge: Create a card that will fit into the "Group Hug" archetype.

If someone has not posted a card by midnight EST tonight, skip them and move to the next name, flipping back to bottom of the list if necessary. Round 3 will be up shortly as well. Crits are due when Round 3 is over (February 17th).

    Updated list:

    Changes from my initial list:
-Added the 4th Advocate. Card is bonkers. Basically Tarmogoyf in this deck.
-Cut Kozilek. Didn't want three 10 drops in the deck and Ula is better.
-Cut 2 Return. Too many X/3's in the format, plus I got some new board wipes in...
-Added 2 Chandra. I don't have much experience with her yet but having a six mana card to ramp into is nice and she provides nice pressure, filtering, and the stabilization.

    And then in the SB
-Cut Desolation Twin because he was only in there for his devilish good looks.
-Added the 2 Kozi Return for Atarka Red and other weenie decks
-Cut some other chaff like Winds.
-Added a Warping Wail because idk it is less chaffy then Winds? It's still the uncertain spot in the SB.

At 4 Wastes and 4 Evolving Wilds you hit a little over 70% of the time. I am okay with that percentage given that Sylvan Scrying isn't an UNPLAYABlE card and sometimes you will still be able to cash this in on Turn 4+ as a Rampant Growth. Plus, with Oath of Nissa making more of an appearance, you are only helping the percentages.

Oh I guess I don't understand the scoring. I was under the impression that since the crits ended up like this:

    A: B, C
    B: C, A
    C: A, B

It would end as a tie.

No, like I said if your card interacts with other, previously exciting cards, that's fine. However, it should do something special with your other card beyond how it would interact with other cards.

    Welcome to the February CCL!

This months theme, in respect to this month's holiday, will be love or at least designing cards that inspire some sort of synergy, symbiosis, ect ect.
Each round will tackle a different kind of relationship; ranging from other cards to other players.

For the second round, we will be tackling cards that work together to form a unique synergy. There have been countless time where cards have been designed that have synergized with other cards to create interesting interactions. Your goal will be to do the same.

Challenge: Create TWO cards that form synergy with each other in a unique way between your two cards. Your cards cannot form an "infinite" combo.

Feel free to ask questions if your unsure about anything in the Discussion Thread

An infinite combo being something like Splinter Twin + Pestermite

The flavor of the cards are great. Jalai, is very pushed. Being able to power out multiple tokens is very strong. I don't like First Strike on creatures with greater toughness than power, but that's a minor nitpick. Mejer, however, is completely bonkers. Hordling Outburst was already a strong card and this card is SO much better.

Whereas Solestico's flavor is better, I think your cards have better design. Rin is very interesting, but focusing on Instants and Lands is a weird combination, especially since red focuses on sorceries more than instants. Also, the ultimate is a little lackluster, I can't imagine ever wanting to activate it. Garathar, on the other hand, is amazing. I love the design and I love how it dips into the "basic land matters" theme.

    2) Solestico
    It was very close...

Probably the worst UR I have read so far. Not only was it so poorly written, but it just a waste of time. I also would have thought the Oath would have come AFTER they defeated the Titans, not before. *shrugs* I am going to go reread the Tazri UR again to get the bad taste out of my mouth.

Each round will tackle a different kind of relationship; ranging from other cards to other players.

For the first round we will be designing a card that works with a teammate. Recently, Oath of the Gatewatch has given us the Surge mechanic which does just this and in Future Sight, we were blessed with the interesting Imperial Mask. I want to see what other kind of "teammate interaction" you can come up with!

Challenge: Create a card that works with a teammate, can still be useful in a 1v1 match, and does not use Surge.

Feel free to ask questions if your unsure about anything in the Discussion Thread

The card does not have to specifically say the word "teammate" but must be recognizable as a card designed of "team play".
    Deadline: February 5th.

Both of my character originate from the plane of Ezeti, a desert-like plane steeped in Egyptian mythology. Pyramids, hieroglyphs, sphinx, and most importantly, slaves, are present on this plane. While this plane has a firm birth from the lore of ancient Egypt, my characters are drawn from the biblical story of Moses and Ramses.

    Rymas, Tyrant King 2UBR
    Legendary Creature - Human (MR)
    You control all Slaves.
4, T: Rymas deals 1 damage to target creature. That creature becomes a Slave in addition to it's other creature types.
Tap five untapped Slaves you control: Search your library for a permanent and put it onto the battlefield.
    2/4

Rymas rules over all Slaves. Using his whip (and the whips of his slave drivers) he conscripts more and more people into his slave army. After has amassed enough man power, he can use his army to build whatever he wants.

    Masos, Breaker of Chains 1WU
    Planeswalker - Masos (MR)
+1: Exile target creature, then return it to the battlefield under its owner's control.
+1: Each player gains control of all creatures he or she owns. Until the beginning of your next turn, spells and permanents cannot leave their owner's control.
-7: Exile all creatures you don't control. Then return them to the battlefield under your control.
    [3]

Masos is Rymas's brother who sees the wrong and fault of slavery. He has taken up the mantle to free every slave. As he becomes more renown for his slave freeing, he unsuspectingly becomes a king himself.

posted a message on January 2016 Top 8 - The Bleeding Edge

    Quote from Flatline »

    Bleed:

Swath of Pain 2 mana B/R mana B/R mana
    Sorcery (R)
Wither (This deals damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters.)
Swath of Pain deals 3 damage to each creature.
A moment of pain, a lifetime of anguish.

Red does not generally spam out -1/-1 counters, and black doesn't often deal damage to creatures. But there have been several instances of red dealing with -1/-1 counters when the block calls for it, such as wither (Puncture Blast, Kulrath Knight, Puncture Bolt), and more recently cards like Razor Swine and Ogre Menial, and black does occasionally deal direct damage to creatures (Douse in Gloom, Sorin's Thirst, Wail of the Nim). Also, Wizards sometimes lets hybrid cards give colors access to things they wouldn't usually have, such as Judge's Familiar giving white access to counterspells.

    Break:

Norn’s Judgement 1 mana white mana
    Instant (U)
    Choose one —
    • Target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn.
    • Target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn.
"Those that follow the ways of the Father shall be rewarded. Those that do not will suffer another fate."

Outside of Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, white does not decrease a creature's P/T. Although if we revisit New Phyrexia at some point, I could totally see a card like this being printed because of the way it mirrors the original Elesh Norn.

Swath is a solid bleed for both red and black but I do think the card is a little too efficient, given it's hybrid nature.
Norn's Judgement is for sure a break but, like Swath, is too efficient. Still, an interesting break.

    Quote from Asrama »

    Bleed:
    Melovarn the Vindictive 5RB
    Legendary Creature - Vampire (R)
    Flying, flash
Whenever a creature dealt damage by Melovarn the Vindictive this turn dies, put a +1/+1 counter on Melovarn.
Whenever a creature deals damage to you or a planeswalker you control, Melovarn deals 5 damage to it.
    5/4
Since Time Spiral, Flash has been almost exclusive to white, green and blue, but lately cards like Dictate of Erebos, Dictate of the Twin Gods and even Dragon Grip had shown that flash can be added to cards that would benefit mechanically from having a surprise element. Melovarn is such a card, so Flash should be an acceptable bend.
    Break:
    Immolate the Æther 2RRR
    Enchantment (R)
Whenever a player casts a spell, counter it. Immolate the Æther deals damage equal to that spell's converted mana cost to target creature or player of that spell's controller choice.
Raya could feel the rage bubbling within her. "What will we do now?", asked Attama. "Burn it", came the answer. "Burn it all".

It should be pretty obvious: Red does not get to counter spells. Much like other red pie-breaking cards like Final Fortune, and Form of the Dragon, the flavor allows it do something that it otherwise wouldn't. Countering here isn't about control or preventing your opponent from achieving their goals, but rather turning the spells into pure energy that fans greater and greater flames.

Putting flash on a creature doesn't seem like a bleed to me. Even if black or red don't get flash, it doesn't really fit with the spirit of the challenged.
Immolate on the other hand is an awesome break. That said, it is not without its faults. I don't like how it just locks the game out into a slugfest. It should either narrow on which spells it counters or cost more or something.

    Bend:
    Mind Needle U
    Sorcery
Target opponent reveals his or her hand. You choose an instant or sorcery card from it. That player discards that card.

Blue has dabbled in discarding, like Dismal Failure, Serum Raker and Trapfinder's Trick, and blue is the colour of mental games, it would make sense that blue would get the ability to make opponents discard.

    Break:
    Relic Transmutation 2U
    Sorcery (R)
Exile target artifact an opponent controls. That player reveals cards from the top of his or her library until an artifact card is revealed. The player puts that card onto the battlefield, then shuffles the rest into his or her library.
Artifact removal is usually seen in white, red and green. But if blue can exile creatures with cards like Blessed Reincarnation and Reality Shift (both of which are currently Standard-legal,) why can't it do with artifacts? Flavour-wise, it makes sense, since morphing is a blue thing.

It's funny because I feel these should be flipped. Transmutation feels like a combination of Polymorph and Transmute Artifact and the fact that blue is the artifact and shapeshifting color makes this almost feel like a card that is IN color. Mind Needle, on the other hand, seems like a break more than a bleed. Yes, blue has had discarding, but never in a selective sort of way.

    Quote from Solesticio »

Arachnus Web more recently, but other similar effects (Lignify, Utopia Vow) show how green can deal with creatures other than fighting - which is now the acceptable way to do it. These are strongly justified through flavor and have a drawback (Spider webs only work in small creatures, turning into a tree leaves a defender creature, and turning a creature into a mana dork by an Utopia Tree reference).

    Trap with Branches 2G
    Enchantment - Aura (C)
    Enchant creature
Enchanted creature can't attack or block, and its activated abilities can't be activated.
Tap two untapped creatures with power 4 or greater: Trap with Branches' controller sacrifices it. Only any opponent may activate this ability.
Unlike herds, lone travelers can be snared forever in a forest.

    Burning Fervor 1R
    Enchantment (R)
All creatures have haste and attack each turn if able.
Whenever a creature enters the battlefield, it gains "At the beginning of the end step, sacrifice this creature" unless its controller pays 1.
A bloodlust so intense that consumes from within.

White is known for taxing cards, namely increasing costs. However, red is known for crazy enchantments and, in some alternative ways, for taxing on lands. This is a red version of taxing creatures, embedded in the reckless red spirit.

Trap with Branches is a solid bleed. Green has had these Pacifism effects before with good flavor and this fits.
Burning Fervor feels like a red card without the the taxing and the taxing doesn't make it feel like a break, but rather just a weaker version of a interesting red card.

    Quote from RaikouRider »

    Bleed:
    Giant Adephage

This is mythic rare for Limited. This card ruins drafts.

    Invasive Ooze 2GG
    Creature - Ooze {M}
When Invasive Ooze dies, if it wasn't sacrificed, put two tokens onto the battlefield that are copies of it at the beginning of the next end step.
Cutting it in half only doubles your troubles.
    1/1

    Break:

    Sequester W
    Instant {U}
Counter target spell. If that spell is countered this way, put that card into its owner's hand instead of that player's graveyard. Cards with the same name as that spell can't be cast this turn.

White doesn't get to counter spells. White is, however, good at setting temporary or permanent rules (precedent: Nevermore) as well as imprisonment effects (cf. Oblivion Ring). White has also gotten temporary banishment effects flavored as repentence before (cf. Excommunicate, Lapse of Certainty). White is good at finding temporary answers while looking for the few permanent ones it has. This card is a temporary answer. I could see this card being printed in a set with a faction like the Azorius.

Invasive Ooze seems in color. Green has gotten plenty of these self-clone effects and this is just a splashier version.
Sequester is a solid design and a slice of whites pie that I wish would be explored more often. I feel this might be slightly more of a bleed than a break but it's close.

    Quote from IcariiFA »
    Bleed:
Treasure Cruise, Icy Blast, Skaab Ruinator

Blue doesn't normally use the graveyard as a resource (often a black thing), but every delve card in Khans makes it seem ok.
Likewise, blue caring about creatures make the card seem more green, but ferocious shows that sometimes those bleeds happen when enforcing a tri (or multi) color scheme.
Also, Inistrad blue zombies are on point.

    Forensic Analysis XU
    Sorcery (R)
Exile up to X target creature cards from any number of graveyards. Draw cards equal to the number of cards exiled this way.
"The body is still relatively untouched. Come, let us secure it. There is still much I want to know."
    -Faldrick, Dimir Necrosurgeon

    Break:
    Retributive Volley 2WW
    Instant (U)
Retributive Volley deals 4 damage to each creature that dealt damage to you this turn.
    Pain inspires vengeance.

White can sometimes deal damage directly to attacking and blocking creatures. There are even things like avenging arrow which shows retributive effects are normal for white. But something as potentially oneside and massive like this? Without targeting even? This would be a break, but in an environment where there are lots of tokens/easy summons or where there will little other mass removal options, this could fit. That and environment based around ,any creatures that have more that 4 toughness

Analysis fits the bleed challenge well enough. It feels a little too blue to be honest, but interacting with the graveyard is just subtle enough.
While has had plenty of "kill after damamge" spells and has even had Retaliate. I could see this being a bleed, but not a break.

    Quote from Hemlock »

    Bleed

    Angelic Intervention WW
    Instant (R)
Counter target spell unless its controller has you to put a 4/4 white Angel creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
    "Heaven always has an answer"

Considering countermagic in white as a "big break" rather than a bleed is not probably the most accurate. Chancellor of the Annex is the precedent of choice here, but cards like Mana Tithe, Lapse of certainty and even rebuff the wicked and dawn charm made countermagic find its way into white (Older precedents include Unyaro Griffin and Presence of the Master). Bleeding countermagic into the other colors was tried several times, but it was only achieved in white with a respectable degree of mechanical and philosophical sense. No colors should other than blue are meant to have hard counters, but with the right limitations white is the color where it feels more natural.

    Break

    Grip of the Censor B
    Enchantment (R)
When Grip of the Censor enters the battlefield, each opponent reveals his or her hand. Choose a nonland card from each of them.
Cards with the same name as the chosen cards can't be cast.
    "I said no"

Preventing cards from being played is a white ability, but I feel this can serve a purpose in black. Discard was once a more powerful effect, as the only color that could benefit from the graveyard in the other side of the table was black. The main purpose of discarding your opponent's cards was preventing them from being cast, but now that the graveyard has become quite resourceful (Delve, Flashback, madness, Dredge, Unearth, Recover, etc) discard has lost a bit of efficiency. Grip of the Censor does what it is meant to do: preventing stuff from being played, and to achive that a bit more of control on what your opponent can do is needed. It's not a big break, but I think this white ability can be used to benefit black intentions pretty clearly

Whereas Raikou had a white counter that really felt white, this one has a counter that is similar to Dash Hopes but painted white. I don't know if I like this kind of effect in white as punisher cards have been in red and black for the most part. This is closer to a break than a bleed.
Grip feels like a weird combination of an exiling discard spell and Lobotomy. Either way, this card feels mechanically more like a bleed than a break.

posted a message on Color Breaks and Bleeds
So for the January CCL Top 8 Doombringer has presented us with easily one of the most difficult challenges I have encountered. Designing a color bleed and a color break. So, with the design period now over, I would like to see what the community can come up with. Post your bleeds and breaks and comment and critique others!

    Here was my submission:

    Bleed:

    Demonic Possession 3BBB
    Enchantment - Aura (R)
    Enchant creature
    You control enchanted creature.
When enchanted creature dies, put a 5/5 black Demon creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
    MOmMy?

    Break:

    Whiptail Scorpion 2G
    Creature - Scorpion (R)
    Deathtouch
2G, T: Whiptail Scorpion deals damage equal to it's power to another target creature.
I don't think even Zegana could manufacture a more efficient killing machine.

Enslave, Olivia Voldaren, and Captivating Vampire all prove that black has access to creature stealing in a very limited and flavorful way.

One-sided fight has recently been moved to green. This card takes green's new fight and combines it with greens ability to have deathtouch and combining them into one, turning this into basically a black card.

"What was once yours, I will turn upon you."

Dark Ophidian seems very blue and black. A nice breath of fresh air from what easily could have been "generic mill effect". EDIT: This a rare and does not qualify.

This feels black and green. I would have appreciated some flavor text.

Amphin Spearhunter has first strike as long as you control a Mountain.
Amphin Spearhunter has prowess as long as you control an Island.

About as vanilla as it can be. This would be a boring uncommon, I would rather it be a 3/3 or cost six mana and be a common or something. Still, good hybrid.
