I'm dying. "This deck doesn't exist, but I think it's Tier 1" "This deck is on the downswing, but I still think it's head and shoulders above everything else". I LOVE it. Zero mention of Eldrazi Tron or Affinity, which have both put up more numbers than DSJ or DSE.

On that note: This mardu list keeps popping up piloted by the same individual. Is this person onto something, or just really good, or both? Does Young Peezy need a ban? Kappa

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. For the past 3-4 months, I have been ready to try to smash with Grishoalbrand, but the past week I haven't been so sure. It still has given me my highest win percentage of any Modern deck, except Eye of Ugin Eldrazi (but I have been close to matching it with a few decks), but I just am not so sure anymore. It would be tough to only fall short of my goal, despite playing at a high level, simply because of the deck. But I also know that this is Modern and anything can happen on any given day.

Did you take a look at the BR reanimator that got tp 32 in the GP this weekend?

Quite a few people in this thread wont be happy unless Miracles, or a modern equivalent, is dominant in Modern. They dismiss UW, Esper, and Jeskai control as complete flukes, which seems very insulting to both the players that pilot those decks to great finishes and those that actively work to tune decks based on said finishes.

I got to see so many varieties of lists on camera both at Copenhagen and on SCG Balt. Looking at the results from both GP's and SCG, the only strong statement I can make is if you want to play anything, you can play it. If you want to play Draw-Go control, you can play it, prison, aggro-control, combo-control, ramp-combo, straight up aggro, whatever you want. If you're good enough, you will be rewarded.
I am all about that DS zoo list.

Storm has had so many cards banned from it, yet it's still a powerful deck.

Maybe it's time to just bite the bullet and ban Grapeshot. Let's just all admit the mechanic is awful and completely unfun for the person on the other side of the table...

Can we also ban Ensnaring Bridge, Cryptic Command, Snapcaster Mage, Eidolon of Great Revel, and Liliana of the Veil? These are completely unfun for the person on the otherside of the table and we should bite the bullet and ban them.

hey everyone! just picked this deck up a few days ago and i'm really enjoying it. i did have a few questions about card choices and about the deck itself.

    1) what's the consensus on the amount of cost reducers? i see lists run either 7-8 and i'm not sure what is better
    2) what's the verdict on peer through depths and merchant scroll? is peer through depths better than merchant scroll? i'm currently playing 2 merchant scroll in my build and they've underperformed tbh. should i cut a remand and go down to two remand and cut the two scrolls for 3 peers?
    3) i noticed people are playing the madcap experiment package in the board, is this any good?

    thanks!

    1) From what I have seen, it depends on whether you run Blessing or not. Run ways to protect your electromancers=less electromancers
2)I started with scroll and have since moved over to peer. Sometimes I need another ritual, not a gifts.
    3) No idea, havent seen it in any of the 5-0 lists

This just highlights how awful and useless the FFL "testing" is.

Or how much difference there is between what Wotc wants out of the format and what the player base wants.

Wotc wants players to buy packs and boxes, LGS want players to buy singles, most players only want to buy into one deck and ride that baby for years.

    Something has to give...

There would be a pretty good middle ground in there. Players only pick a deck and ride because the expense of the format puts a hamper on picking up multiple decks. This leads to these players picking up fewer singles at an LGS, because their deck may not gain anything from the new set, which in turn has the LGS crack less product for singles.

Is this deck enough overpowered to get something banned?

I don't think so, but I feel that Wizards is likely to ban at least one piece if not 2 if they feel it's getting too much meta share. (which is much less meta share than a "fair" deck would get before a hit) I would not be surprised if there's a piece that's hit by this time next year, though if preordain gets unbanned I expect at least one of grapeshot or empty the warrens to be banned.

Someone on reddit the other day mentioned that his friend splashes black for discard effects (e.g. some number of collective brutalities and thoughtseizes). What do you all think about this? I think it allows us to play a grindier game and ensures that our "going off" turn isn't disrupted. I haven't seen a lot talked about a black splash, but it does seem interesting. I guess the sideboard could look like:

    3-4x Thoughtseize
    2-3x Collective Brutality
    2x Empty The Warrens
    2x Blood Moon
    2x Shattering Spree
    1x Shatterstorm
    1x Echoing Truth
    1x Repeal

I've been playing 2 Collective Brutality in my board to pretty good effect, but adding thoughtseize seems really greedy. I'm only playing 2 black sources (1 watery grave, 1 basic swamp) and while I cant fetch them, I'm not always sure it's correct unless I'm planning to fire it off that turn.

Am I correct in guessing that the correct times to play a mancer are only when I'm preparing to gifts that turn or next, or when I have another in hand? What are proper other times to play one?

Been jamming for a little on MTGO, and I feel like the lines are highly dependent on what your opponent is on/ what their board is/what you have. Sometimes I just jam that ***** turn 2, against like Elves or something, knowing there is little they are going to do about it and threaten the turn 3. On the flip side, I will wait until I have enough mana to have counter back up and go off against UW or skred.

The way I see it, there are more or less two variations of combo that are viable in modern: Storm based and non storm based. The ones that are not storm based at least have to make an attempt at interaction and playing a fair game. Twin was an example of this as was pod and is Company decks. The mechanic of storm removes a lot of the necessary interaction in a deck. It does its thing and wins or loses based on what the opponent is able to do (if they can interact, they can counteract the combo a likely have a win if they cannot, they lose.) I'm not a combo fan but I have always viewed storm as a problematic mechanic if for no other reason than it has a tendency to break good blue spells. Storm is a legacy mechanic that needs cards like FoW and Daze to keep it in check. Modern doesn't have those kinds of cards and likely never will.

How fair is Dredge? Affinity? Ad Nauseum? Elves? KCI? These are non-storm mechanic combo decks that feature about as much interaction as Storm does.

I am really happy where Modern is right now, where the most dominant deck is <9% of the meta, and it feels like any type of deck can do well, if piloted right.

@cmr, that is some of the most condescending garbage I have read on here, which says a lot. You start with your assumption that the only players who disagree with you are control haters who just want to ***** on your good time. Then you define your good time as a control deck that is less fun to sit across than lantern and miracles combined.

Control puts up numbers, regardless of whether it's the kind of control you want. Skred regularly top 8s large tournaments, but you would complain because it's not your exact flavor of control. Ok, UW bounces between tier 1 & 2, with variations on how aggressive it's built. Oh, but it doesn't line up with your exact wish list of an unstoppable format topping juggernaut that has most games go to time? Unfortunately for you, and fortunately for everyone else, WOTC found your vision of a great format to be an unfun one, most people don't want to sit across from someone for an hour because they have all the answers for everything and all the ways to find their answers.

WotC has shown it doesn't want 2 players staring at each other until time, you can sleeve up control as long as you have a reasonable way to close out the game. Lancaster mage, Celestial, V. Clique are all threats that can close out games. And, no one is saying you can't sleeve up some single serra avenger deck, but why is WotC obligated to ensure your pet deck is tier 1? Why shouldn't goblin players feel entitled to a tier 1 goblin deck? What about telling time? Mono blue, takes forever to close the game out, and has a sense of inevitable after a certain point.

Again, you don't just want your draw go to be playable (which it is), you want it to be strong enough that you dominate the table no matter what you come up against, but that isn't the way modern works. All decks have good and bad match ups. If they didn't, they would need to be banned, otherwise they would dominate the metashare ala miracles.

so, any opinions about my current SB?

    - 2x Empty the warrens
    - 3x Blood Moon
    - 4x Lightning Bolt
    - 1x Shatterstorm
    - 1x Shattering Spree
    - 1x Defense Grid
    - 1x Dispel
    - 1x Negate
    - 1x Echoing Truth

I was just looking through some lists and almost everybody runs 2 bounce efects. so should i cut 1 bolt and add 1 repeal? I'm just really concerned about white eidolon. I never liked the white splash so no wear/tears for me. But what do you think? I'm just really used to 4 bolts, i think it's just so good.

I am going to go on and on about swan song, particularly because Eidolon of Rhetoric has been seeing more play because company decks have been seeing more play. The 1/4 body dodges bolt, and sometimes waiting on an echoing truth isn't good enough. Plus it can slot into more MU's than dispel, able to hit both TS and IOK, as well as all the counters dispel would normally hit. The 2/2 is pretty negligible as well.

Been testing swan song in place of dispel. Its taking the slots. Being able to hit any turn 1 discard on the play, or RIP or either of the Eidolons. Its just so good.

Hey Everyone, Just bought into Storm on MTGO and jammed some matches. I played probably 20 matches, half of which being 2 man queues to up my points to enter leagues. Just finished two leagues, both 3-2

    League 1
    Revolt Zoo W 2-1
Game 1 He blew me out. Game 2 I managed to combo out turn 3 and make a ton of goblin tokens, which did double dudty in attacking and clogging up the board until I built up for the grapeshot. Game 3 saw him go T1 Evolution, T2 Hidden Herb, BTE, Rally (I bolted The Evolution in response to the HH) and bashed me for 8. I had kept a hand that was a bit slow to put together the combo, but gave me access to ritual > anger. After the board reset he rebuilt, but I was able to PIF the anger and make a ton of goblins.

    Elves W 2-0
Game 1 came a bit close with me on the draw, he went off and had me dead on board with 2 3/3 elvsih mystics and a 5/4 Shaman of the pack against my baral which I needed to go off next turn, but he got greedy and tapped one of the mytics for a CoCo, I think he was trying to shaman ftw, but ended up with a mytic and an elite. I went down to 3, untapped and killed him.
Game 2 saw the return of anger, with his board being decimated and me going off.

    Dredge W 2-0
Game 1 was an easy, quick game. Game 2 took a little more time, but I angered after he went off then I went off.

    UW Control L1-2
Game 1 was pretty easy. My understanding of playing against the control MU is that we can force force too much on them and kill their resources. Worked pretty well G1. I boarded in some echoing truths, but got completely shut out with a RIP. I tried going off with both remanding the grapeshot and echoing the RIP, but the slog took 29 minutes and it felt like they had the answer for everything. G3 I actually was able to go off with goblins, and the next turn he slams Jace, Architect of Thought. Downhill from there.

    UW Control L 1-2
I thought I was playing against the same person, but I wasn't I just got unlucky. G1 again, super easy. G2&3 not so much. I boarded in the blood moons for this match, hoping to cut them off white mana, but I think that was poor boarding. This list seemed to have more threats available, with clique and snapcaster making an appearance. Jace and Elspeth also showed up, but I didn't see RIP at all.

    League 2
    RW Soul Sisters W 2-0
Both games were super easy. The player felt really salty game 2, since he had both leyline and RIP in play when I went off. The problem was he mulliganed and ended up pathing his own t1 sister in order to get a land to play RIP. I echooed both of them and went off. He said BS.

    UW Control W2-0
Game 1 went the same way as all the other game 1's against UW control. Game 2 went very differently, where I just piled on him with resources and it seemed he didn't have all the answers this time. I didn't board in moons in this match. I am not even sure if I just played this better or if I got incredibly lucky.

    RB Control W 2-0
Game 1 was rough, I think I got IOK, Brutalitied, then double TS'd into double demigod. I played to my outs and pulled the game completely out of my ass. Game 2 He slammed a Leyline of the Void, but it seems da leylines, dey do nothing! Echo into combo, ez pz

    Abzan Vizer L 0-2
Game 1 I was on the draw, he had the infinite mana combo on turn 3 after t1 thoughtseize with the ballista in hand. Game 2 I kept some bolts, which bolted a vizir, but he hit a t3 eidolon and I had no way to get rid of it. He got me with the finks infinite life.

    Burn 0-2
No idea how the hell I am supposed to win this. Game 1 he just burned me out on turn 4. Game 2 he slammed a t2 eidolon. It didn't even feel close.

    Moving forward:
There is a bunch of stuff I want to try. Apostles Blessing out of the board might be good, letting me slam my Baral t2 and hold up protection. I was considering a splash of white, which would give me access to wear//tear. My burn MU is already atrocious, but I figured maybe the wear//tear would balance out the life loss of the shockland. Speaking of white, I was considering adding in some leylines of my own. They didn't work very well for my opponents, but I see some lists spiking the 5-0 in leagues with them. I could also go a completely different direction and attempt the transformational madcap board. Swan Song is another one that answers some of the most problematic cards, but not sure.

There was an old tweet (of Helene Bergeot I think?) that said WOTC are considering to completely cut the 5-0 daily lists from the leagues. Could someone please link it for me here if he remembers it?
    Thanks.
I am asking because today's results only contain 5 lists.

Do you think the lack of results for today may be a reflection of the maintenance downtime?
