everyone is up in arms about it costing 1. guess what? no graveyard based deck in standard really abuses flashback till turn 3 or so anyways, so what does it matter? if anything, it gives you time to plan and play around it. plus, with all the maindeckable artifact hate, it wont be a problem at all to play around.
Now recently a few of us have looked over the comp rules after some of the updates, and we noticed something. Suspend is as follows:
702.59a Suspend is a keyword that represents three abilities. The first is a static ability that functions while the card with suspend is in a player’s hand. The second and third are triggered abilities that function in the exile zone. “Suspend N—[cost]” means “If you could begin to cast this card by putting it onto the stack from your hand, you may pay [cost] and exile it with N time counters on it. This action doesn’t use the stack,” and “At the beginning of your upkeep, if this card is suspended, remove a time counter from it,” and “When the last time counter is removed from this card, if it’s exiled, play it without paying its mana cost if able. If you can’t, it remains exiled. If you cast a creature spell this way, it gains haste until you lose control of the spell or the permanent it becomes.”
my question here is this... since the time counters get removed at the beginning of the upkeep, the spell is going to try to be cast during your upkeep. Above I have bolded the part IF ABLE in the text... now you cant normally cast creatures and the like during your upkeep without flash, so it almost seems like this is telling us that these creatures and sorcery cards cant actually be used as like we think with regards to suspend.
This is a bit of a debate we have had, and i for one think it is more of a wording error on wizards part, but who knows, what do the powers that be see it as?
my friend played a deck with this card in it and i called it terrible. come fnm time, he didnt lose a single game, which made me look at it again. this card has some great potential, and might shine in this deck. it comes online even faster now as well since the appearance of stagger shock, making for some good turn 4 wins....
turn 1, this.
turn 2, hellspark (or other creature, or burn spell)
turn 3, stagger shock
turn 4, staggershock rebound, cast a burn spell, dev summons and bushwhacker, pop the quest swing for 24.
yes, this isnt the fastest this deck works, but it does give options. my friend really liked stuff like earthquake with this card, as it was absolutely brutal.
rebounding cards are great for the fiend, so up it to 4 stagger shock. virulent swipe is a cool card taht will pump the fiend more and will make your geopede even better. you could run demonic dread to keep a creature from blocking and cascade into more removal, making your attacks with the fiend even more deadly. i was thinking on building a deck in this fashion myself actually.
oh, and blightning. its good, you are on color, any questions?
Esper Charm: Simply the best card in format that, for whatever reasons, hasn't been played since its haydays in Five Color Control. Instant speed draw/discard gives you superior card advantage to nearly every other control deck in standard. You can continue to tap out during your main phase for powerful planeswalkers while drawing cards during your opponent's end step. Instant speed draw is an overwhelmingly powerful ability, and after a few games with Charm you'll realize why WotC rarely prints stuff like this anymore. Oh, and did I mention it can blow up Eldrazi Conscription during your opponents' attack phase? Do I even need to?
i would have to agree with the card type reference like blood oath.
however, it could also be that the card name for gideon contains the word planeswalker in its name, but does not self reference itself later in the card. since typically most cards that self reference themselves will use the full name only once.
1. No, I think they will be messing with this for awhile.
2. Depends on the reprinted cards. Will Phyrexian Negator cause an uproar? Probably not. After all, Tombstalker is already considered a good if not better alternative. If they printed P9, then yes, some prices would probably drop. Though they might increase for, say, Beta versions because they are still old and collectible.
3. Gain, WotC has been pretty good at getting new players into standard at least for awhile. Older formats its hard to say, but old formats will likely stay expensive no matter what reprints they make, sans FtV: All the Reserves List for $20.
i agree taht wizards has gone a long way towards making standard accessible for new players. however, i am a veteran of magic for over 10 years and the older formats are still too expensive for me lol
treasure hunt is a great card, as it always draws you into something relevant. but there is still something to be said for a spell with 3 different modes, all at instant speed.
instant speed discard is powerful, and there is a reason why it isnt printed all that often. instant speed draw is obviously strong. the enchantment hate....well i wouldnt run a card devouted to enchantment hate that was sorcery speed
why would we care what chapin says anyways? a pros opinion is still just an opinion. honestly i have seen him get beaten down by garbage cards. more options means more versatility. if you can support running the charm, do it. people often say that discard sucks, but how often are you happy that your opponent played a blightning over any other 3cc card?
since there are no mana fixing lands in m14, its probable that we get all sorts of goodies in theros.

Sorcery
Reveal any number of black cards from your hand. For each card revealed this way, each player sacrifices a creature.
Next up: Blightsoil Druid

maybe an enchantment that cost 5 or 6 and let you put a creature into play at the beginning of your upkeep?
it might give the creature haste, trample, some buffs, or a combination, it may give all your creatures the buffs and abilities.
it could also be a sorcery that let you put as many creatures from your hand into play.
it was in chandras duel deck. the pacifists damage is typically zero. it has firebreathing. sherlock holmes got into fights... seems to fit
Divination
Twincast
Shivan Dragon
Essence Scatter
Planar Cleansing
why do you think these cards got cut? heres my two cents...
divination is being replaced by something at a similar cost and effect, but at instant speed. could also require some discard. maybe sift or catalog
twincast may just not be seeing the play that they want it to. they may reprint something similar to it, or wait till SOM. either seems probable
shivan dragon: judging by the pic underneath, its being replaced by something more badass
essence scatter: why have a 2 mana creature only counter when you can have... COUNTERSPELL?! who knows!
planar cleansing: well... lets just reprint day and be done wiht it

wow, esper charm cost 0 mana? since when!?
This post adds nothing to the thread.
